  1. Didn't we all agree going into this season that this team had too many holes to be a playoff team and that we should wait until 2010 when the next wave (Gamel, Escobar, Salome, etc) could start and enable us to improve offensively at some spots and trade some vets (Hardy/Hart) for pitching)? More than a half season done and this is obviously still the case, and yet people want to bottom out the system some to add Halladay who won't likely land us in the playoffs. That's pretty incredible to me. Stick to the plan that made sense guys.
  2. 1) Gotten a better starter than Looper going into the season 2) Sold higher on at least one of Hardy/Hart 3) Dealt Cameron for Melky (saving 8-9 million) if that was needed to get a better/more expensive starter That's about it though. Three is definitely debatable and I expect to be in the minority there. Two you don't know what was out there I guess. One, I think he could made a bigger splash but who knows. I don't think he's done a horrible job though. Probably a B/C range. But this grade will change in a hurry for me either way in the coming days. This is a huge moment for Doug. He can't overpay for something that imho won't get us to the playoffs. He needs to be smart and know when to back away unless a great deal comes up. That doesn't mean we have to throw in the towel. The bounces could go our way with the current squad. Who knows? But if he bottoms out the system more for a pitcher that probably won't even get us to the playoffs, he is not the GM to take this team any further imho.
  3. TLB - clearly you appreciate what Hardy is offering the team more than a lot of us, have some things to back it up that I don't agree with, and don't want to part with him and do want him signed long term. That happens to frighten me to death, but we'll just have to let time see what prevails.
  4. There would be a host of pitchers that might be available in the off-season that could be 1 or 2 starters. Impossible to say they won't be available. I don't think teams offer what they do today during the off-season though because they feel that their team's Suppan/Looper/Bushes are good enough to take their teams to the promise land.
  5. It will be a huge mistake if we pay him even 8-9 million dollars/year long term.
  6. Again, I'd like an example of what Hardy's worth now then. What team is looking forward to giving him 8+ million a year while watching his offensive show this season and complete lack of speed? Or is that team just wanting him for the bat he's showing this year and thus would certainly show next year before letting him go? It's not that the guy is horrible, but we have a cheaper alternative that is becoming harder and harder for the JJ supporters to say is inferior at the plate sitting in AAA with a .300 average, potential gold glove, bevy of speed, and very limited money coming his way any time soon.
  7. 2009 is more on par. 5 million would be about where I'd go per year, and I'd rather just move him if he could get us a decent starter and go with Escobar. ETA - any SS is worth value for their defense. Hardy is not showing he has a bat and is about to be due a bunch of money that he might not produce enough to earn. Again, the easy/safe thing to do would be to go with Escobar and get whatever pitching you can for JJ.
  8. How old was Hall when he started to regress? How about Lugo? Please, let's allow Escobar a chance to be the answer rather than give Hardy an obnoxious amount of money.
  9. Please Roy, tell Toronto that you won't accept a trade to Milwaukee or tell Milwaukee you'll demand a trade after this season.
  10. 8-9 million for Hardy per season is not something that would be too wise.
  11. I happen to feel that if Melvin is going to go after the big dog every year or even in any given year, he needs to have better timing in trading some of the current MLB crew for pitching or prospects. Hardy and Hart obviously stick out like a sore thumb to me. If he is smart enough to peddle them at the right time, we'd either have more prospects to be able to do a trade like this or we'd have the pitching to not need to do something like this. Until Melvin shows an ability to sell high on some of our MLB guys, it's really too costly to do a move like this each and every year.
  12. Hopefully, then, the total amount of series' to date this year will be enough for Melvin to avoid dealing a good chunk of our future for the slight shot at playoffs this season. And I say slight MAYBE putting us at 25% chance of winning the division.
  13. Do tell me/us what JJ will net us then Zzz?
  14. We have room for Escobar at SS right now, but we argue the same thing every thread.
  15. If Hardy had any value to acquire us pitching, we wouldn't have to even worry about what will be more painful.....watching Gamel or Escobar in a different cap in an MLB allstar uniform.
  16. Escobar is still getting better and is a .300 hitter and huge base stealing threat in AAA. Again, he's only going to get better. Hang on to a potential gold glove leadoff hitter that will be cheap for quite a few years.
  17. This is eerilly like last year when Melvin would not trade LaPorta/Gamel/Escobar in a CC trade and then gave in. Please don't do that for this year's underachieving team.
  18. But then your stuck grossly overpaying Hardy. Yet I do agree with you Brooklyn, which is why it's a no win situation to deal either in a Halladay swap.
  19. If you trade Escobar, you are looking at paying a ton for Hardy (probably 8-12 per) for production you might not get. If you trade Gamel, you get McGehee cheap for five years and have a potential "somewhat stud" in Taylor Green on his way in 2011. As much as I love the bat that Gamel would present, we simply can't pay JJ that much. I guess the bottom line is, you don't trade either when we are one of four teams that could finish fourth place very easily in our own division.
  20. Neither if we are smart at all.
  21. I echo everything you said brooklyn. Hopefully Doug reads these boards....
  22. I'd probably go Parra, Lawrie plus two more and just see what happens. I wouldn't "make sure" we leave the best offer on the table for the Jays. ETA... I'd also go Parra/Lawrie/Hardy for Halladay and see if that'd do it.
  23. It will be quite costly to be paying Hardy and Halladay after next year. We need Escobar to lessen the cost over Gamel (where we can go with McGehee or Green at third). This is if we want to be responsible with our money and make a legit effort to keeping Halladay.
  24. Hasn't there been a few times (maybe two at least) where Doug has made a mid-season deal as the Brewers GM with the team that we are currently playing? With Pittsburgh being willing to deal SO MANY people, you'd think he could get'er'dun with something this series.
  25. To add, unknown/unproven pitchers often have a LOT of success their first 5-10 starts before hitters catch up to them. Might be about the perfect time to give Cody a chance.
