  1. Yeah, but that rises about 100 points when you include this season. A reasonable projection of Ransom has to be at least a .675-.700 given his success in AAA. His pre-season Zips projection was .225/.289/.405, so his updated projection has to be over .700 by now. Of course, we still don't know anything about his defense. If he's a butcher, he might be as bad as Maysonet.
  2. PKBadger, I'm not sure why you think we should expect a .577 from Ransom. His career OPS is in the ~.710 range. I'm guessing there's something about him that has nothing to do with his bat that explains why he hasn't had much of a chance in the majors. His MiLB lines from Reno, as Briggs pointed out, are highly inflated, but he still put up a wRC+ of about 120 in AAA when he played in the IL for Philly and NYA. It could be that he's a terrible defender, a nut, or just that nobody has given him much of a chance. That's something Doug Melvin has a much better knowledge of than anyone on this board!
  3. Paige is ~450. The problem is obviously that the MLB stats come up. I'm still surprised he doesn't crack the top 50 though, much less the top 100. You'd think the people filling these out would be knowledgeable enough to understand why Paige's numbers in MLB weren't incredible (though they were excellent for a 41-59 year old). His career rAVG in NgM is 3.22, so I'd guess that puts his ERA at 2.5-2.75. K/BB of nearly 5. Not to mention, he put up an ERA+ of 124 between his age 41-46 seasons.
  4. I just can't imagine almost anybody being worse at the plate than Izturis right now. Jeff Bianchi doesn't excite me very much, but he almost has to be better than Izturis. I can't believe we're watching a guy that projects to finish with a .250 wOBA start at SS. That's horrendous.
  5. Ransom, who plays SS, 2B, and 3B, had a line of .269/.354/.577 in just 58 PA's this season. He has a career .316 wOBA in ~450 PA's. Last season in AAA, he hit .317/.405/.629 (standard PCL grain of salt). He can't possibly be less productive than Izturis, can he? I have no clue if the guy can play worth a lick at short, but he has logged about half of his ML innings there. Mods, not sure if this should be in transaction rumors/proposals or here!
  6. Given the eight position players out there tonight, I won't complain about Gomez hitting 5th. Kottaras has a career .295 wOBA vs. LHP, just a shade lower than Gomez's .299. Weeks normally hits lefties very well, but he's had a brutal go of it lately (his K% is up to 31.2 this season!). Gomez has hit lefties hard the last two seasons in about 100 PA's, but he had just as strong of a reverse platoon line in 2010. Obviously the best option would be Lucroy catching and Gomez hitting behind Lucroy, but that ain't gonna happen.
  7. It's amazing that given how awful the first 1.5 months have been, the Brewers are still in this race. The Cardinals have struggled and they are really starting to get beat up, and Cincinnati hasn't exactly blown out of the gate either. Even with the injuries, the Brewers might be a .500 talent level team in a weak division (probably just short of that actually), so we certainly shouldn't give up the hope of postseason baseball just yet. The pitching staff on this team is still very solid. The bullpen still has two big time stoppers. Braun is a monster. What we really, desperately need is for Weeks to get things figured out. Plug a 2009-2011 Rickie Weeks into that batting order and the hole created by Izturis and (to a lesser extent) Ishikawa doesn't seem to gape quite so wide. Had the Cardinals gone 6-4 rather than 2-8, I might be throwing in the towel. As horrible as the Brewers have been, they haven't lost a ton of ground. There's still a chance, and it's not a Lloyd and Mary Swanson chance.
  8. He was. Conrad's feelings were hurt, and that's why he didn't produce. But, given that Conrad's feelings were hurt, he should have known he would have went 0-20 and never called him up. I'd still rather see them move towards Green at 1B, but Ishikawa has done a nice job so far this season.
  9. Even if Luc's Zips projection is what we get going forward, that would make him slightly above a league-average hitter while starting ~120-130 games behind the plate per season. If he can do that, his signing will look pretty good, as they'll be paying 2, 3, 4, 5.25 million from Arb-1 through FA-1. If he does become a .280/.350/.450 type of player, I'll be thrilled.
  10. Because Turnblow SUXXORS!!! Greinke has been great this season. It's a bit too bad the team couldn't score its 16 in an Estrada start. If the Brewers continue to struggle, they will get a good haul for him. I think we have to accept that his performance will price him out of Milwaukee at this point. I'll miss watching him.
  11. Roenicke has done some annoying stuff lately, and I don't like the number of squeezes and contact plays, but I think he's done far fewer silly things so far this year. Compared to other MLB managers, he's probably at least average. Lucroy has been great this year. He could legitimately finish the season with a .290/.350/.450 line with this hot start. The last time the Brewers had a catcher with a >100 OPS+ was in 1999, when Nilsson had a huge year.
  12. I've never been more excited to get Carlos Gomez back. We missed you GoGo!
  13. I don't think Morgan is a great defender, but he is at worst average. I'd peg him as slightly above average right now. He takes some poor routes and looks like a complete fool 3-4 times per year, but he has the speed to make fairly difficult plays look routine. Also, over the past few years we're used to watching Carlos Gomez and Mike Cameron. Those are hard standards to live up to.
  14. What do people think of Aoki's defense? I feel like he's a bit sluggish for CF, though his routes look fine. I've also not been impressed by his arm very much. Of course, we're used to watching Gomez in CF so that might be part of why I haven't been overly impressed with his defense. I've really liked what he's been able to do at the plate. It's clear that he's going to hit with little power, but he strikes out so rarely that I wouldn't be surprised to see him carry a .290/.350/.400 line. At this point I almost wish they would have dealt Plush before the season, but I guess the additional depth can't hurt.
  15. Attendance of just 32,000 tonight. If this team can't turn around quickly, we're going to continue to see more empty seats...
  16. Your thread title remains misleading. Did Babe Ruth not pitch ~1,200 innings?
  17. He hit .268/.320/.394 with the Twins, along with playing solid defense at SS. That's in no way sucking. Hardy's 2010 was monumentally better than any Brewers' SS season since he left.
  18. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/rich-thompson-and-the-mlb-dream/ This is a great read, if you have the time. For those of you who haven't heard, Thompson last played in the majors with Kansas City in 2004. He notched one plate appearance and grounded into a double play. Now, after 7 years of toiling in the high minors, the Rays desperately needed an OF to start against the Red Sox. They called Philadelphia and traded for Thompson, and a few hours later he started, collected his first MLB hit, an RBI, a HBP, and 2SB's. I always wonder how some guys like Thompson don't get a chance as a 5th OF at some point in their career. His batting lines from AA and AAA are pretty much all slightly to moderately above average; he hits for a very high batting average and stole 48 bases to just 4 CS last season for the Phillies' AAA affiliate.
  19. this game sucks so much why subject us to Conrad? I watched the whole thing Edit: I can't count to 5.
  20. Them's fightin' words! http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSOCgDyeawR-RpwVdlunk5qPvCiHgacbAt6tenYoh3CobmT4qRi9g Oh, and sorry, I meant metres. The defence is really labouring today. Ugly stuff.
  21. I laughed, and then I thought about it. The 2002 infield would have outhit this one by a country mile. I don't really know how they were defensively though.
  22. I just realized this game thread has about as many digressions as Uecker's radio calls back in 2002-2004. Yeah, this team looks absolutely horrible.
  23. Today I played a good game of ball with my dog. He stands about ten meters from me and I bounce him balls to jump and catch in his mouth. It's kind of like basic infielder fielding practice. I wonder if a shepherd dog can hit as well as our SS's...
  24. Shaun Marcum was at the plate. He can't hit. Nice baserunning by Izturis and Aoki there. Gotta do something here Weeks...
  25. I have a little pipe dream of a team in Greensboro. The Greensboro metro is ~1 million, but Raleigh-Durham-CH is about 2 million and only 50 miles (50-55 minutes) East, while Charlotte is also ~2 million and about 90 miles (75-85 minutes) Southwest. Given that baseball starts and ends opposite college basketball, there isn't a lot to follow down here outside of MiLB during the summer.
