  1. Does anybody notice that Kenpom's rankings have the Badgers at #1? I wonder what's up with that.
  2. Ooh, I think I can win this! My mother in law is here for the week, and my wife and I are caring for our newborn daughter. It's 10:00 eastern right now and we're struggling to stay awake. I've watched second tier bowl games all day, and I cashed a $3 bottle of sparkling wine.
  3. Wow, Cristiano Ronaldo went swimming with a dolphin! That guy's about as good of a read as this thread with the herpes rumors.
  4. Am I right that Fukudome and Matsui were international FA's, and hence, were not subject to posting fees? At first I thought $1.25 million was a blatant low ball, but maybe it's more of a moderate low ball. If all it takes to get this guy is 2 years, $6 million, I'm going to be annoyed if he goes back to Japan.
  5. That makes a lot of sense if true. Maybe the Yanks bid $55MM, but the Pork-Fighters found the holiday cheer and give it to the poor old Rangers.
  6. Yeah, in the three trades the only guys I think we'll really miss are Cain and Lawrie. For some reason I was thinking Cain struggled last season, but he put up a .312/.380/.497 line in AAA. I could see him being a solid .275/.325/.400 type of CF with plus defense. I'd take back Lawrie for Marcum in a snap, but I still don't think it was a bad deal. But man, would it look nice to have him at 3B and use the Ramirez money for something else.
  7. I don't think many of Yuni's detractors are really saying he has been the worst player in baseball. It's my opinion that he has to be a candidate for worst MLB full time starter over the past three years though. Using only players with 1500+ PA's in the last three seasons, Yuni is tied for last in WAR with Wiggington at -0.7 (next lowest is Delmon Young at 1.3), lowest in wOBA at .284 (Cabrera 2nd at .289), third lowest in Fangraphs' fielding value (-33.1), last in OBA (.277). If you include players who received between 500 and 1499, Yuni moves up to about 15th worst in WAR. He's not the worst player in baseball, but he is certainly in a small group of players that could be considered the worst players to receive a full time job over the past 3 seasons. But yeah, he's definitely become the whipping boy of the internet baseball community, and he isn't as bad as we often say he is. I think there are several guys that could probably be ripped on just as much as Yuni, but I guess it's just more fun when it's Yuni. There's something about the way "Yuni sucks" just rolls off the tongue.
  8. Total Zone is a pretty clunky way to calculate defense though. Their error rates look pretty similar, and I don't think there's much of an argument to be made to say that Yuni had more range in 2011 than Escobar in 2010. Escobar wasn't good in 2010 by any means, but he was nominally better than Betancourt in 2011.
  9. 7. I hadn't realized how good GioGonzo's ERA numbers are over the past two seasons. It'll certainly be interesting to see how he performs after leaving the Coliseum. Probably not unfair to peg him for somewhere around a 3.75 ERA next season.
  10. Although we have to wait to see the money in this deal, with only two guaranteed years, I'm betting this one is good for the Cards. He obviously has had trouble staying healthy, and I'm not sure that he can play CF next season. Regardless, dude can still hit, and definitely makes them a better team next year.
  11. Isn't $50 million what Dice-K got? I can't find Dice-K's numbers from NPB but as far as I remember, Darvish's seem to be quite a bit more impressive. It will be interesting to see how he does. It would be great to see the Japanese stud pitcher the Sawx didn't go after become a true ace, so long as he stays in the AL.
  12. Yost is gonna love this guy. http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQAz2iWQd8PZ51KlEpNsBrWkz8wcY09eVADRQzS0qW0Ye3VTrNhkg
  13. Never in my life did I imagine we would be discussing Ryan Braun's bowel movements.
  14. Oh, I don't think that was their goal. I was just saying that I could see that happening with a guy like Ichiro or Dice-K. I'm betting the Brewers just put in a bid in case nobody went higher, and it turns out they won. Hopefully they can sign the guy on the cheap, as these Japanese stars are often fun to have on your team with the little bit of media circus they tend to bring.
  15. So the winning bidder has no commitment? Is there anything which would prevent a team from making an outlandish bid with no plans on making a contract offer, solely to avoid having their rival sign a guy like Ichiro? I can just see the Yankees bidding $500 million for some guy to make sure the Red Sox don't sign him.
  16. I've been all for moving Braun to 1B for a couple of years now, and I think that if Aoki signs for 3 years or so this would be the perfect time to do it. From everything I've read, Aoki has pretty good range in the outfield, but just has a very weak arm. Aoki-Mormez-Hart in the outfield with Braun at 1B looks pretty good to me. I'm curious to know what some projections are for Aoki, but without thinking too hard I'd guess he profiles as something like a .285/.375/.400 type of guy (maybe that's generous), which would look really good in the 2-hole. If Aoki is as productive as Fukudome at the plate (probably less power) and can play a solid LF, a deal of something like 3 years/$10 million would be a bargain. I have absolutely no clue what Aoki will ask for in negotiations, or what he was getting paid in Japan. Does anybody have an idea about either of these things? Plush-Aoki-Braun-Hart-Weeks-Aram-Lucroy-Gonzalez-Gallardo looks pretty darn good to me.
  17. "NPB Tracker's Patrick Newman (writing for Fangraphs) said in August 2010 that Aoki was "the best pure hitter Japan has produced since Ichiro" and has good defensive range, though a weak throwing arm will probably limit Aoki to left field in the majors. " Stats through 2010: http://www.baseball-refer...ayer.cgi?id=aoki--001nor From 2007-2010, he put up an aggregate .339/.421/.497/.918. I think he struggled last year to the tune of .260/.350/.360 or so. I like this move, should be fun if he actually makes the trip over. Edit: Season dates.
  18. This seems like a trade that will benefit both sides. The Reds greatly improve their chances of making a run this year and San Diego gets some more long term help. I didn't realize Latos had been that good over these last two seasons. It'll be interesting to see how much he drops off when he goes from PetCo to Cincy.
  19. I think it would be far easier to explain to a child that Braun was just using some good ole' PED's than to explain what a venereal disease is. Just sayin'. That said, I think there's a part of all of us that is now hoping that Braun actually has a "condition" such as those mentioned earlier.
  20. Here's the way I see it: if we can construct about 10,000 mutually exclusive situations that have a probability of about .01% of being true, we'll have pretty much proved his innocence. So far we have herpes, viagra, and a couple others. Let's get to work, folks.
  21. Well that makes this whole thing so much more palatable.
  22. Starting at 1B, eh ESPN? Here's to wishing McGehee the best of luck. He was a great guy during his time in Milwaukee, and it's unfortunate that he struggled so badly last season. Veras looks like a pretty good high strikeout reliever. Penciling him in for a 3.50-3.75 ERA might not be unreasonable.
  23. Even if Braun is innocent, I just don't see how he'll be able to show that this was accidental, etc. We've heard that defense so many times before, and I don't think it has ever worked. Worst case scenario is that he sits 50 games and we don't move on from this. I'm not someone who tends to look up to athletes, nor am I someone who chastises athletes for using PED's. However, the media and fans tend to have long memories when it comes to this stuff. For me, I think the best case scenario is that he took something while rehabbing, and only while rehabbing, admits he took something, etc.
