  1. I get it and I understand it but it's still disappointing they couldn't at least find somewhere to trade him. Also disappointing that our organizational ineptitude at first base will continue. Carter at least offered something unlike the string of crap we've ran out there since Hart blew out his knee.
  2. Even if there is a trade of bullpen arms coming I'm not really sure why they're claiming these older relievers. Especially when it prevented protecting some young guys or risks losing a guy like Walker who offers the organization more than Parker or Geltz ever could. You can find guys of the same quality and better at the end of spring training as teams make cuts.
  3. Not that I'd be interested in him but Yonny Chirinos is the exact type of pitch that Stearns has acquired many of already in the he has a high strikeout-to-walk ratio.
  4. [sarcasm]I thought Jack Z got fired?[/sarcasm] Talent wise I'd say the Dbacks got the best of the deal but it was rather even. However, the Mariners trading young pitching for a guy who just had a career year with little control left seems rather stupid. Especially when you consider Segura is really a 2B now and they already have one of those who's not going anywhere anytime soon.
  5. Had our third (and what turned out to be final) guy come out. He seemed nice at first but turned into a total salesman once we started talking. Asked us a bunch of what I thought were incredibly stupid and pointless questions such as "How will you determine if this is a successful project?" There was a point where he stopped and said to my wife and me "You guys have been pretty quiet. Are you sure you don't have any questions?" I responded by saying, "I just want a price." He had this look like he was holding in extreme anger on his face and was silent for like a minute. He started packing up his things and I honestly thought he was just going to leave. Instead he pulled out a binder and started working on prices. Wound up going with him only because my wife was sick of this whole process. He wasn't who I would have picked though.
  6. Tying compensation picks to a player only limit a free agent's contract. Not sure why the players union would want to keep that part. They don't. The owners are willing to drop the compensation but want the international draft in exchange, but the union doesn't want the draft. Not sure why the union wouldn't want the draft either. Those don't represent those kids and keeping costs down on the superstar prospects would allow more money for their members.
  7. I guess I'll trust the brain trust on this one but a 31 year old reliever with sketchy numbers seems rather pointless.
  8. Tying compensation picks to a player only limit a free agent's contract. Not sure why the players union would want to keep that part.
  9. Spending massive amounts of money on your major league team is almost counterproductive in MLB. Eventually those highly paid players are going to be old and suck and prevent you from filling much needed holes on your roster. Any real competitive balance has to start by making sure all teams have an equal chance to acquire amateur talent. The last changes to the international free agent market helped a little bit but the big money teams can still throw boatloads of cash at latin american teenagers and outbid everyone else. A real international draft would do more to fix competitive balance than a salary cap could.
  10. He was posted last year and no one bid on him. So it's hard to gauge a price for him. Byung Ho Park signed with the Twins for $3M a year at the same age last offseason. I would think $5M per year would be the tops Hwang could get.
  11. Slightly off topic but still relevant. Last night the announcers were having a fit over Washington going for 2 after their second TD, which made sense to do given Gruden's concern about the wind. However, I can't believe that more teams aren't going for 2 almost every time. The last two years kickers are making extra points at a 94% clip. Teams are converting 2-points at a 50% rate, even higher this season at 53%. So your point expectancy when kicking is .94 point compared to 1 when going for 2. It would be even higher if you have a good offense. Pittsburgh has gone for it more than any other team the last 2 seasons and their converting at a 60+% clip. Obviously it makes sense to go for the kick late in a game if you're down by 1 and sometimes you're not going to convert but over time you should come out ahead.
  12. I agree. They could also have someone from the replay center relay the information to the press box.
  13. I would really be surprised if any changes involving the QO or roster sizes would be in effect immediately or this upcoming season.
  14. I thought he had pretty much given up catching and was a 1B now.
  15. I'm pretty sure the only people who have a problem with the whole having multiple logos/jerseys thing are posters here. There are very few teams in all of pro sports that strictly adhere to one jersey/logo and those are generally franchises with long history's like the Cubs, Yankees, Packers, and Lakers. If I'm going to watch the Brewers 150+ times a summer I'd like a little visual variety. I think the Brewers script and jersey variations with it are stale and only remind me of the 2000's teams that were some of the worst ever constructed. All of the branding since the switch to the current uniforms is just so blah and boring but I suppose that's also a reflection of the team's play in those jerseys.
  16. I disagree with just about everything you have said. Has Rodgers been special? Of course. Is it overblown in how bad his play has been the last 20 games? Absolutely. But there have been a lot of other good players for the Packers. This season is not the one you make a definitive statement on a guy like Ted Thompson. As much as I would like to see him step aside and let Wolf take over, you have to give him credit for building rosters each and every year that ARE good enough to win Super Bowls. This year, maybe not. But I would've liked to see what this team looked like had the injury bug not hit them. I think they'd be winning the division right now looking to gather steam towards the playoffs. Obviously injuries are derailing this season but the overall talent level has been average for quite a few years. It seems the O-Line is an issue every year. I'll give them credit for getting Jeff Saturday a few seasons ago which was a great move until he got hurt. TE has been a black hole since Jermichael Finley. Aside from the converging seasons of Woodson, Peppers, and Matthews the defense has been average to crap. I'm not calling for anyone's head. Thompson has done a good job of building a consistently competitive team, luckily they play in what is a lackluster division most years.
  17. During Rodgers first year as a starter he spent most of the time running for his life. The next couple of years he would lose shootouts. His whole tenure has been playing behind patchwork lines, not having a running game, and, aside from a year or two, having to score more points than his suspect defense gives up. He is literally the only reason the Packers have been relevant since he was drafted. It's amazing how little has been done to improve any position outside of QB under Thompson. I guess Lacy might work out eventually but there were a few quality free agent RB's last offseason that really could have helped this team.
  18. I do remember talk when Counsell was first signed to his front office job that he was being groomed for an exec gig. Then when he was hired to manage it was on a 3 year deal which tells me there weren't any temporary thoughts at the time. That was a different regime though and I feel Stearns will hire his own guy when this team is ready to be an actual contender.
  19. Walsh singed a minor league deal with the Braves. Kind of surprising that Stearns was willing to give up a 25 man roster spot for him last year but didn't get him on a minor league deal this year.
  20. Turner has a 136 OPS+ over the last three years. Last year was actually his worse year of the three mostly because he tanked hard for the first couple months. Has nothing to do with market. He's one of the best free agent hitters this year.
  21. That's just from the big league club. I remember the Brewers had a couple guys on team Canada that were minor league nobody's.
  22. Same as pitching anywhere: keep the ball down, work the corners, and change speeds.
  23. I'm pretty sure Turner and Castro will get more than that and that trade isn't even close for Quintana. Even if those things happen this team still has questionable starting pitching at best. That would probably be a .500 team.
  24. You expected the government to do something that makes sense?
  25. Yes. They'll have plenty of random minor leaguers playing for countries you had no idea they were connected to.
