  1. Gennett had an .834 OPS in the majors last year. He hasn't had an OPS that high in the minors since A ball. And, like has been pointed out many times, his OPS has gotten worse every time he advances a level. My point is that people really need to temper their expectations for Gennett based off of 1/3 of a season. Lots of people thought that Fiers was going to be good after his 2012 season too. There were posters that wanted Maldanado to play first after his 2012. His 2013 was disastrously bad with the bat. Do I think Gennett will outperform Weeks in 2014? It's very likely, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Gennett fall on his face and put up numbers like Weeks did last year as well. I also know that this is almost certainly Weeks last year with the team and Gennett will take over in 2015 regardless of how he does this season and I think he will be adequate until the team is ready to add someone much better or they develop a 2nd baseman.
  2. Actually, I think it is the opposite, I think it is more likely now than ever... I was thinking the same thing.
  3. Martin Maldonado 2012 - 256 PA, 93 OPS+ 2013 - 202 PA, 41 OPS+
  4. Sabres play hockey in Buffalo.
  5. Getting Butler would make this season a "go for it" season. He alone won't make this team a contender so other moves would need to be made and Milwaukee doesn't have the prospects or cash to do that so I see no reason to go and get him.
  6. well he had TJ in 2012, and a friend of mine who follows the buccos closely told me that the reason why he was in rookie ball this year was because he was in extended spring training recovering and supposedly should have been in A ball this year. he said the organization was high on this kid, but he wasnt with the team long enough to protect from this draft with a 40-man roster spot when they've got so many good/great prospects to protect as it is I was guessing based on his age and just having had Tommy John he was probably in rookie ball for rehab more so than that was the level he was supposed to be at.
  7. He's a lefty so the only other options are OF and those positions and kind of spoken for.
  8. I've been trying to find more information but did this kid play professionally overseas? His age makes me think he might have for at least a season or two but I don't see that he has. I would guess what happens to Wang Chung depends on what happens with Will Smith. If Smith is the loogy then Wang won't be making the team. If Smith is in the rotation then Wang probably stays as the loogy.
  9. Santana will get at least $8M for 1 year. Maybe as much as $10M if the Yankees really want him.
  10. How can Wang have been eligible? He's only played one minor league season? I really hope he sticks around. So many Wang Chung references to be had.
  11. This only makes sense if catchers can't block the plate AT ALL. No other defensive players can block a base so a catcher shouldn't be able to either, ball or not. Where it is going to get really annoying is that the rule is probably going to be any runner making "malicious" contact with a catcher is going to be out and possibly thrown out of the game while no catcher will ever be tossed for doing anything to prevent a runner from scoring. I can see the thugly Yadier just standing in front of the plate without the ball daring a runner to do run into him and then whining later about the "correct way to play the game". What really bothers me is the reason that they are doing this. They say it is about preventing concussions. I'm totally on board with that but then Buster Posey's injury is cited. He didn't get concussed. It was his inability to know how to block the plate that got him hurt in the first place.
  12. This is so true. If voters say they won't vote for Palmiero because he tested positive that's fine. If they won't vote for McGwire because he admitted taking steroids, fine. But to not vote for someone because they played in an era when most everyone was taking steroids without any shred of evidence that that player was taking something is shameful.
  13. Smoak, maybe. Montero, no. The only reason Montero was ever considered a good hitter is because he was a catcher. His offense at first would be very average-ish. Certainly an upgrade over last year but not worth it.
  14. It would be a nice gamble but we've seen plenty of times that very injured, very good pitchers get signed by the likes of Boston and New York just to spend the year rehabbing and making a handful of starts. The only way he ends up in Milwaukee is if he loves brats and beer more than money.
  15. I'd do it but there's no way the Phillies do. Weeks does nothing for them since they already have Utley and Lohse is no where near the pitcher Lee is.
  16. I hope they stick with what they got but that aint Doug and Mark's style. They will acquire someone, even if it means bringing back Yuni sadly. Why not trade for Justin Smoak? The Mariners don't need him now and I can't imagine it would take much to get him.
  17. Good idea. They should just put everyone who played from 1980 to whenever testing started on a ballot and have the voters vote yes or no to each and whoever gets say 75% yes votes gets in. Then move on.
  18. I don't get why players and clubs don't want contracts front loaded. $1M is worth more today than it will be 5 years from now which is a benefit for the player. But then at the end of the contact when the player isn't as good as he was at the beginning it allows the team more payroll flexibility to add better players or trade the player somewhere he wants to go. It seems like wins all around.
  19. The D-Backs got hosed. They gave up a top prospect and a potential useful major leaguer for a guy who can't play defense (who they will be playing at his worst position) and who can't get on base.
  20. Does anyone know how much they actually get paid for this day contract? I've always wondered this as I've seen many athletes do this. I believe Favre did this to retire but always wondered if it was in the thousands, a dollar, more, less? Seeing as retiring as a member of a team means diddly squat other than sentimental value I'm sure these contracts are just honorary and are not any sort of a legal contract. If they were the Phillies (or other teams) would have to clear roster space for them.
  21. Can't play defense and only skill is hitting homeruns. That's a Doug Melvin kind of player!
  22. I know it's been said here before but he drafted Weeks (2), Braun (5), and Fielder (7) with high first round picks. Picks that, in theory, shouldn't be hard to make. What did he do the rest of the draft? Not much. Corey Hart in the 11th, Lucroy in the 3rd, Gallardo in the 2nd. He hit on a few of his top 10 picks but nothing else really.
  23. I think they'll be getting Price or Kemp. Price will cost prospects but I think the Dodgers would take much lesser prospects if the Mariners just took the whole contract.
  24. Did the tour today. I was the only one on it so it was pretty fun. I was wearing my Brewer stocking cap so the guide asked me if I was a Brewer fan and I said yes. He then asked me if I was here to see some world series trophies. I wasn't lectured on playing the game the right way or how to be classy but I could've done without him mentioning Stan Musial at every opportunity. Because I was the only one on the tour he took me a couple places he usually doesn't. I got to see the scoreboard control room and walk on the field behind homeplate.
  25. Philly signed him last year and he still wound up in Milwaukee.
