  1. Totally agree with this. The vote shouldn't be "pick the best 10 or so." It should be "is this guy a HOF'er, yes or no?"
  2. I hear you, but you don't want to be the big lump on the couch who makes her handle all of the stress alone. You don't care about your wedding, as I didn't really care that much about mine, but your fiancé cares, so you need to be supportive and take the load off of her. The invitations, flowers, table centerpieces, her dress, her bridesmaids dresses, tuxedos, guest list, menu, music, the church and preacher, the reception site, the marriage license, transportation to and from, all of that and more. . .all that stuff needs to get done, and even if you don't care about it, she does. It's a huge event that she's been thinking about and hearing about since she was a kid, so keep that in mind. As for the wedding pictures, I never look at ours. She never looks at ours. But there are some shots on the walls and in albums at her parents' house, so even if you don't care about them, somebody will. Good luck on the wedding planning. It will get better.. Believe me I'm doing a lot. I booked the DJ, the caterer, and the church. And because I'm a graphic designer I did our Save The Date's and will be doing the invitations. I'll also be doing the decorating for the reception.
  3. . . . and there's my cue. Here is my yearly copy/paste of why guys like these get votes. And how, one time, it backfired. "Every year, a player is bound to get what is called a "courtesy vote" for the Hall of Fame. This courtesy vote is pretty much an "agreement" by a writer or broadcaster who got to be pretty good friends with a player over the years. When the player then retired, the two of them, knowing full well that the player was not Hall of Fame material but only Hall of Very Good Material, came to an agreement that the writer/broadcaster friend of his would cast a vote for the player so he'd be able to tell his grandchildren that yes, he was given a vote for the Baseball Hall of Fame. It happens all time. In fact, I could probably come to a pretty good guess of who voted for Luis Gonzalez, for example. Luckily, the voters in these cases do their homework now so they don't have a repeat of the Wes Ferrell induction of 1984. It was through the veteran's committee vote, but it still worked out in exactly the same way. Here's the story in case you don't know it: "Rick Ferrell was a pretty good catcher form 1929 through 1947, a pretty good farm system director and general manager for Detroit, and, by all accounts, a pretty good guy. Rick played eighteen years (admittedly in eight of these he didn't catch 100 games in a season). He hit .281 lifetime, with twenty-eight career homers. His brother Wes had hit .280 lifetime, with twenty-eight homer. Of course, Wes was a pitcher. While he was still eligible in the writers' balloting, Rick got one vote in 1956, another in 1958, and a third in 1960. For years, reporters covering the Committee on Veterans would tell tales of how its memeber, old sportswriters, players, and executives, would cast 'courtesy votes' for old buddies, knowing full well that these guys would never actually get elected. It was a nice, folksy touch. You know: Hey, Smiley, you didn't get in, but look, I voted for you, old pal, old sport. Everybody was happy but nobody got hurt. Then in 1984, it happened. Apparently everyone case a courtesy vote for Rick Ferrell. Bingo--he's a Hall of Famer." --from The Big Show. Olbermann and Patrick, 1997. So doing favors for old buddies makes it ok? Some of these guys shouldn't even be on the ballot.
  4. I can understand the heat that Dan is getting for what he did but there should be more heat placed on the guys who voted for Jacque Jones, Armando Benitez, etc. and the guy who only votes for Jack Morris every year.
  5. I've actually used that line many times. That doesn't seem to bother her because she doesn't want to spend a lot of money either but yet we still have to have all these things. Like with the photographer. I, of course, said we don't need a photographer because there will be plenty of people already taking pictures. But no, we need a photographer. So she finds a few and asks me what I think about them and I say whoever is the cheapest. We tried to book him but he was booked for that day. She asks me who we should try next and I say whoever is the next cheapest and that's who we got. That was probably about the least drama-filled thing we've done.
  6. Weeks could handle 3B. He has the arm and range really isn't all that important since everything gets hit at you pretty hard.
  7. You don't get out of market games though do you? That would only work in WI I believe. That's how DISH works. You only get Brewer and Bucks games even though other teams' games show up on the guide. When we first got DISH, 10ish years ago, you could watch Twins games and Brewers games.
  8. The team is probably not going to be very good so it might as well be entertaining. Maybe T-Plush will take it to Brian McCann when the Yankees are in town or just haul off and punch Adam Wainright in the face (since Carpenter is retired now).
  9. I'm getting married in June. My fiancee and I have pretty much everything planned out, only a few little things to take care of yet. I did not want a wedding of any kind but she did so we have to do it. With a lot of the planning I've honestly had absolutely no opinion because I don't want it anyway so I tell her that I'll be happy with whatever she chooses. She then gets upset because I don't have an opinion. However, on things that I do have an opinion on she usually disagrees with me. This experience has confirmed my stance on not having a wedding. Why would anyone want to put up with 9 months of drama for 12 very expensive and unnecessary hours of one day.
  10. When I was on unemployment in 2012 I just had to file online and check the box that said I did everything I was supposed to. I was legit for about the first 3 months and then not really till I was off of it about 3 months later. I also had to apply for only 2 jobs and everyone else I know only had to apply for 2 as well. I would say not to worry about it but I never had to meet with anyone in person.
  11. No way is their value even close. Butler has put up an OPS+ no lower than 116 in each of the past 5 seasons (116, 138, 125, 134, 125) with 158 games being the least he's played in that span. Davis has never played 158 games in a season, his high is 156 followed by 147 and outside of his 157 OPS+ he hasn't reached 116 in a season (115, 111, and 89). Butler is only 1 year older than Davis so their ages are basically the same. Team control is where they differ. Butler is signed through this year and then has a team option for 2015 while Davis is controlled through 2016. Even taking that into consideration Butler is still vastly more valuable than Davis. I wouldn't trade Thornburg for Davis and the Royals wouldn't trade Butler for just Thornburg.
  12. I think it will be Seattle or the Yankees. The Yankees have the money and will probably just give him a blank check. Seattle clearly wants to be competitive and they've had great success with previous Japanese players and they seem to like it there too. While their offense still won't be spectacular that would be a very solid rotation 1-3 with Hernandez, Iwakuma, and Tanaka and some great potential arms with Taijuan Walker and James Paxton and even Danny Hultzen if he can ever get healthy.
  13. This is how my exchange with my dentist went today: Dentist: Any problems since your last visit (in July)? Wisdom teeth sore or anything? Me: I don't have them anymore, so no. Dentist: Oh, well that's changed since last time. Got 'em all out now? Me: At least 4 years ago. Dentist: ... (goes on like nothing happened) I looked back and it was actually 6 years ago, 7 in March. I've only seen this guy at least 10 times since. He even was the one who told me to get them taken out.
  14. That won't mean anything. The Phillies signed him last offseason and look where he wound up.
  15. It does not make any sense that any GM could look at Yuni and think of him for a starting position.
  16. Johan isn't going to be looking for a contending team or the most money. He's going to be looking for the team he can most likely make the rotation of because he's looking to make his money next offseason. Having said that, the Brewers should be interested but I don't think our rotation is enough of a disaster to convince Johan he has a good chance to make it.
  17. That is just hiding the ball well that doesn't have anything to do with his delivery. All pitchers do this and there really isn't anything odd or deceptive in his delivery. There is quite a lot of oddity and deception in his delivery. He's not Dontrelle Willis but his delivery is unique. I can't think of any MLB pitcher that brings the glove as high or pushes the ball as low as he does. And he steps across his body a bit. It's like a combination of Lincecum and Jered Weaver.
  18. No small market should be signing Tanaka. There is way too much risk to be tying that amount of money into a player like him. He's going to be paid like a bonafide ace without having even thrown an MLB pitch. He's probably going to have a solid career but the odds of him performing to his contract are going to be quite small. The Yankees and Dodgers can afford to pay a #3 or #4 like a #1 but small market teams can't.
  19. I was thinking the same thing. It seems like every day a player who has spent significant time in MLB is signing with a Japanese or Korean team.
  20. Isn't there already one inside the stadium? Like between home and first.
  21. Just say no to Michael Young.
  22. Notice how quickly Kozma was replaced this offseason?
  23. Tucker almost won it for me. I had Tucker and Calvin Johnson, my opponent had no one, and I was down 40. I didn't watch the game, didn't check the internet, didn't do anything until Tuesday morning because I knew starting Eric Decker over DeSean Jackson had killed me. I heard the score was 18-16 and thought, great. Not enough TD's for Johnson but then realized Tucker might have had 6 FG's. He did and I lost by 10. I started the year 2-4 and won 7 in a row and missed the #1 seed by starting Ben Tate over Giovanni Bernard and losing by 5. If I would have not done that my team would have scored enough to beat the 4 seed with or without Monday night. I dominated after that 2-4 start and 1 stupid mistake cost me. I'm still kicking myself for it.
  24. Always go with a feature back over a tandem back. Plus, New Orleans loves to pass.
