  1. Yup. Last year will probably be the best offensive year of his career. His rate stats from the first half of last year were only slightly better than his career line, but still well above average. It's not a knock of Christian at all, he was simply hitting at a level that can't be maintained by anyone. All the bandwagon fans that jumped on around September are going to be disappointed that he's not prime Barry Bonds for all 162 games every year.
  2. This 100%. It will be interesting to see how Yelich will be perceived next year when he's OPS'ing .825-.850 instead of 1.000. Still a very, very good player but not the HOF'er he was for half of 2018.
  3. Those uniforms are surprisingly bland for how flashy the logo is. I think the M with the fish is horrible and is basically a ripoff of the Brewers M with barley, which I also hate. I'm intrigued by the color scheme. The problem is, just like the Dbacks new scheme, it will look terribly out of place on the field with every other team being incredibly boring and conservative. I might be one of the only people that actually liked the previous Marlins scheme. The giant M wasn't great but the colors were lively and original.
  4. Brewers were predicted to win 77-86 (exceeding expectations by 10-19 games) Braves were predicted to win 72-80 (exceeding expectations by 10-18 games) Brewers division lived up to expectations and was very tough. Braves division fell apart, all teams other than the Braves would have finished 5 (or 6th) in the central. Voters just forgot about what teams were actually predicted to do, didn't consider the competition, and didn't know or pay attention to how games were actually managed. Maybe Baseball-Reference or Fangraphs can come up with a managerial WAR stat. Once again, not taking anything away from the Braves or Snitker but, the Brewers over-performed and won a highly competitive division (not to mention best record in NL) while the Braves over-performed and won a division where everyone else was "tanking", collapsed, or failed miserably while having the worst record among all the playoff teams. Based on what people generally expect from manager of the year, Snitker and Counsell are the only two who should have been considered. I'd say maybe Black but the Rockies only improved by 4 wins from 2017.
  5. MLB needs to do something newsworthy this time of year.
  6. Dickey's transaction in 2007 and 2008 are a little funny. Just kept getting bounced between the Twins and Mariners.
  7. Pretty much this. An average, at best, bat with horrible defense that grades out to a hair over 0 WAR player over his career outside of his career year. I really don't know why he would be considered by Milwaukee (or anyone for that matter) outside of a minor league.
  8. Not to take anything away from what the Braves did, but they won the division because the Nats totally flopped and the Phillies choked it away at the end. Also had two other teams in the division that were putting in little effort to win. In the NL Central, the Cubs and Cardinals played about as expected and only the Reds were in tank mode. The Braves have a very talented team and probably should have been a wild card contender this year but they basically had the division gifted to them while the Brewers led the league in wins while playing against the teams with 2nd and 6th most win in the NL. Heck, the Braves would have finished 3rd in every other division in baseball other than the AL Central.
  9. Heard Jordy retired after yesterday's game. Haven't seen it actually reported yet though.
  10. Not quite the same but I'm pretty sure he was the de facto bullpen coach for Colorado Springs last year and probably has been for a few years. Having said that, I think if he had any interest in coaching he would have stopped playing and started coaching by now.
  11. I feel like I'm probably the only person who thinks Le'Veon Bell and Dez Bryant aren't being greedy, stupid people with their holdouts. I think football players are becoming a lot more aware of what playing the game is doing to their body based on the number of players who are choosing to retiring after only a few seasons. Provided, they haven't been totally stupid with their money, they're both set for life and never have to work a day. Why put your body through an NFL season if you're not being paid what you want and if you don't have to? And in Bryant's case, why do it somewhere you might not want to be? I understand why fans feel the way they do about these guy's situations but I think it's something that's going to become more common in the coming years. Even in baseball there are guys who are at the end of their careers and they choose to sit out half a season because they would prefer to spend more time with their families and then sign with a contending team.
  12. I'll just throw out any pitching coaches from the Rays organization as candidates. There's the Matt Arnold connection and the Rays having a similar "pitcher use" philosophy. Kyle Snyder just finished his first season as pitching coach with the major league team and the Rays website lists 4 "pitching coordinators" on their staff. Rocco Baldelli just went from a non-dugout major league coach to a manager so that jump isn't totally unheard of. I think all the Brewers current minor league pitching coaches are holdovers from before Stearns and Counsell so I just don't see any of those guys being considered.
  13. The Yankees have shied away from the throw gobs of money at every problem philosophy for a while and I think that will continue, with Machado at least. I'm sure they'll try but ultimately I think he'll go to a team that just wants to "make a splash" and prove they're a contender. He's a Philly next year. They started out hot and then totally collapsed. Their SS's of the future (Crawford and Kingery) proved to be totally underwhelming and they haven't shied away from "win now" type moves like the Arrieta and Santana signings. I think they practically give Santana away, paying most of his contract but still saving some money (or maybe throw Crawford in if someone takes the whole thing), move Hoskins to 1B, and sign Machado to his megadeal.
  14. Can Eovaldi put up an .800 OPS? If not, then he really wouldn't have helped much.
  15. This exactly. It's a team full of flawed and bad hitters. We have absolutely no clue what Coles does behind the scenes, but unless he's telling the guys to take pitches over the plate and then flail at anything the pitcher throws with 2 strikes I'd give Coles 5-10% of the blame for the hitters sucking. A team full of flawed, bad hitters. Reeeeeally? Don't we have 2 hitters in the top 5 of the mvp voting? Who exactly are these bad, flawed hitters on the roster on this team that made the nlcs? Everyone other than Cain and Yelich.
  16. He had all 11 at second base, don't forget that. He had 10 errors at 3B, and just 1 at 2B. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/shawtr01.shtml Obvious knock on the MLB Network announce team who knew absolutely nothing about the Brewers when they broadcast their NLDS game against the Rockies.
  17. It's about half of what my wife makes in a year. I would think we could make it 6-12 months off of it with cutting some things we really don't need. If it's because my wife lost her job then it might be an issue as she has the insurance. Being T1 diabetic, my meds alone without health insurance would take up the vast majority of our monthly budget. And don't get me started on insurance, the medical industry, and the drug companies and their racket. I'd be banned in a heartbeat.
  18. Just a pot stirring writer trying to make something out of nothing. Following his logic, the Red Sox players should be out there striking with the workers. But they are not. And no one cares. Crossing a picket line isn't the same as not joining one. The players had zero say in where they were staying. What are they supposed to do, refuse to stay there and find another hotel with 50+ rooms available immediately for the next two nights? This is such a non-issue I can't believe the Globe wasted kilobytes hosting it on their website.
  19. I have put little to no thought into it as well, and I'm 31. My wife will have her student loans paid off next year and then our only debt will be our mortgage. We have a sizeable (I think) amount of savings and add to it every month, I have some investments my parents made for me when i was a little kid, my wife has a retirement plan, and we live well below our means because we have little interest in material things. I have no clue how that will translate into the financial aspects of retirement. I don't even know what I would do with myself in retirement. I've spent the last 3 years as part-time self employed and stay at home parent. I mean, my son takes up a lot of my time but when I do have time to myself I go crazy if I don't have something to work on. I can't imagine going back to having as much free time as I did before kids with nothing to do. I must get that from my mom. She "retired" about a year and a half ago but still works about 10 days a month at her old job. I have a couple of friends who have taken the "work my butt off and not have a life so I can retire by 50" path. To each their own and hopefully you make it to 50 and are healthy enough to enjoy it so that skipping those 30 years of your life is worth it.

  21. Why would any D1 talent come to Wisconsin to play in our crap weather? At least UW-M plays in Miller Park sometimes. Gophers have a program. They also play some games in the Twins stadium, which while also outside, is a lot nicer than playing next to Lake Michigan in the middle of March with a 20 MPH coming off the lake putting the wind chill around 15 degrees.

  23. I'll never understand the talking heads that say the shift should be banned. Essentially saying that there should be a rule to prevent a team from taking advantage of an opponent's weakness. With that same line of thinking pitcher's should be banned from throwing breaking balls to batters that struggle to hit them, teams should be outlawed from trying to steal against pitchers that are slow to the plate or catchers that have weak arms or taking extra bases against noddle armed outfielders, and teams should be required to pinch hit a LHB for a RHB if the LHP on the mound can't get righties out. If guys are sick of hitting outs into the shift, learn to hit the ball somewhere else. Just as in all other parts of every sport - if you're failing at something, work on it so you don't fail at anymore.

  25. Other than the Tweet that started this thread, Ray's name hasn't been mentioned at all for job openings. It doesn't mean that he hasn't been considered but if his name isn't even being floated I doubt he's in much demand.
