  1. Most in the Phoenix area would consider Maryvale a slum. It's a place where lots of the hispanic gangs (closely linked with cartels, coyotes, etc) have activity. During the day it's alright, but at night most people would rather drive elsewhere for food and entertainment. I've seen worse areas in the nation, but how you can tell Maryvale is rough is that seemingly half the storefronts are pawn shops, "buy gold" shops, tattoo parlors, and liquor stores. We know that these can be found in more affluent (thereby, safer) areas, but just not with the frequency.
  2. I've stayed out of this so far, but I find it amusing that some are giving up on the guy. I compare him to a similar MLB player (and former Brewer) who was also considered a long-time AAA/MLB player that crushed the minors and struggled in the big leagues. This will be Mat's age 25 season (til July), so he's still not old! Gamel's MLB totals through last year: 145 at bats 35 hits 63 K's 19 BB .241/.335/.414 Overbay's MLB totals before his age 27 season in Milwaukee when he became a full-time regular: 266 at bats 72 hits 73 K's 35 BB .271/.357/..391 Their numbers are similar, but more importantly their usage was similar as well. I think we all view Overbay as a very solid hitter, and wouldn't be disappointed if that were the worst-case-scenario for Mat.
  3. Stripes Animal House Fletch Blues Brothers Men at Work Hot Shots Real Men
  4. The best part of these moves is that while the Brewers will be winning in 2011, they also won't have to push players to the majors before they are ready. When we were awful, our prospects were often better than our big leaguers. It's nice to know that we can keep guys in AAA a while without absolutely needing them before they're ready
  5. If Betancourt has a bad year going, Counsell will play more. Last year he didn't play much, but that's okay. I'm trying to remember, but didn't we let Inglett go? So I think that as of now our only backup is Cruz, right? I really hope Josh Prince has a good year and becomes a prospect!
  6. To me the Brewers made some perfect moves. I think most of us were curious about the comments we'd been reading about Lawrie's work ethic and attitude being lax. Throw in that he has no position, and even the most sabermetric of teams have realized the importance of defense, and it made sense to move him. The Greinke move was perfect because it helped make this team a contender. Odorizzi will be missed, but he may never even thrive in MLB, let alone AA. Jeffress was a fun prospect, but he also had diminished value as a reliever. Throw in that he could always relapse into his addiction, and that was a concern. Escobar was good defensively, but didn't thrive with Sveum and MAcha. In fact, it sounded like Escobar was repeating Chuckie Carr lines about being good enough the way he was and not needing to change his ways. The big loss was Cain, who showed a ton of promise offensively AND defensively. At the same time, he's very raw and plays a position where we have at least 3 other solid prospects behind him that are all left-handed and more refined. The minor leagues exist for one reason--to make the big club better. In these cases, the minor leagues have clearly made the big club better. Hopefully all the others become big time players and we miss them. But at the same time, I really thought I would miss Garrison, Thatcher, and Inman, and that hasn't been a problem.
  7. If there were a competition for Frozen Custard eating, then I'd be world champion!
  8. CheezWhizHed, I think it would be interesting to have both Schafer and Komatsu in AAA. I doubt it would happen, but if both can pan out, I don't see why both can't play. While neither has shown much power, they have plenty of speed, OBP, and good defense. In 2012 we might need Hart at 1b with these two manning RF and CF. It would raise the offense's OBP (at the expense of Prince's SLG) and would improve our defense at two positions. The only trick is that Gamel might be competition for 3b, 1b, or RF.
  9. Good to see Fernando Perez is still in baseball. He's the best defensive CF I've ever seen in person, and also one of the smartest players (Ivy League). If Melvin's theory ever comes true for him and he learns how to use his speed, he could be a sleeper for the Cubs from this deal
  10. i remember Jorge Fabregas lost his case to the Dbacks, then the next day they ripped up the contract and gave him 2 years with a higher base salary than he would have had
  11. I would expect Betancourt to out-produce Escobar offensively this year, but defense will be the challenge. The good news is we aren't stuck with Betancourt after this year, so I really hope we at least try Farris at SS.
  12. depends on your wants. If you're college age, I'd stay near Tempe (ASU). If you're a night owl, I'd stay in Old Town. If you're looking for something inexpensive but near food, anything in Scottsdale, Glendale, or Peoria would work. I wouldn't stay in Phoenix though...especially the Maryvale area.
  13. I still have Brewers playoff tickets for 1998 (I think that was the year)....kind of a similar thing.
  14. I'm curious as to how the new manager will be towards Minor Leaguers. Yost always kept informed about minor leaguers and loved following their daily reports. He was the eternal optimist. Macha always seemed a pessimist and would talk about how far away from big league ready their nuances were. It could impact guys like Katin, since Yost seemed to like having him in big league spring training games while Macha didn't
  15. Invader, I would assume any wiggle room would go to adding a pitcher/bat at the trade deadline. We know from past comments that Melvin budgets for in-season acquisitions. Some team might beg us to take a $10-20 million per year player off their payroll midseason.
  16. I don't know why you'd want to destabilize the bullpen. At this point I see Parra as likely to close as Braddock in 2011...both might get two saves, but Axford is getting the bulk
  17. Flood Pants, thanks for the link...I know I've seen it before, but it is interesting to see the 2008 and 2009 lists and realize how our prospects haven't panned out. We've gotten little-to-no big league production from LaPorta, Bryson, Zack Jackson, Salome, Jeffress, Parra, Green, Gamel, Escobar, Lawrie, Frederickson, Adams, Lintz, Odorizzi, Gindl, Brantley, etc. Sure some of them have been used in trades, but it has hurt that all have not fulfilled their potential WITH the Brewers. And, of course, trading minor leaguers for big leaguers will weaken our system...so some of this is natural.
  18. also, was it ever confirmed that Zarraga was switch hitting in 2010? One user mentioned it, but I've seen most writeups only mention him as a RH hitter and reference his AZ league production as a righty
  19. Goldeneye is bringing back fond memories of college, so I recommend it
  20. my bet is that Cappy signs with his hometown team...the Dbacks. They need pitching and can promise a rotation spot
  21. If the Brewers are able to extend Marcum and Greinke for 3-5 more years, we're only need to develop a few pitchers. Starting pitching was a glaring problem when we had no budget AND no talent. Now we have big league talent, so we can hold back the prospects we do have. Assuming Prince walks after 2011, we'd have a rotation locked up and salary certainty at RF, LF, and possibly 2b (weeks), 1b (Hart/Gamel), McGehee (a candidate for a 3-4 year deal now),etc
  22. wow, that's a bold statement. When we were last about a decade ago, we had nowhere near the talent we have in the minors now. We don't have impact bats, but we have solid ones. And our 3 straight pitching heavy drafts will hopefully pay dividends this year with lots of potential 2-5 starters. However, it is also fair to say that if you evaluate Frederickson, Zarraga, Lintz, Wooten, Hall, Green, Prince, etc, we are hoping for lots of huge steps forward this year.
  23. Chris, I was at a spring training game in Peoria behind home plate. You were getting rocked and left the game. I joked with my friends that it was a phantom injury...boy did I feel dumb to hear it was the UCL. Best of luck to you, and if there are no other options, please consider being our 6th starter. You'd make our team stronger, and be in position to get to the post-season twice with the Brewers...few others can say that!
  24. twobrewers, Cody Adams isn't dragging down the system anymore. It would be nice if 2 of Arnett, Lintz, Frederickson, and Walla could become solid prospects again. I'm also hoping Periard, Anundsen, and Wooten give me reason for optimism again.
  25. what's weird for me is that Betancourt and Escobar are the same offensively, only Betancourt has more power. Who knows if Escy will ever be much better than he currently is. Drew is not and has not been available. I'd love his stats, potential improvement, and leadership.
