  1. Fielder is among the worst 2 or 3 defenders at his position. David Ortiz, Adam Dunn, etc could all likely play a better first base. Fielder has tremendously regressed this year defensively, based on constant observation. In fact, it appears 2009 was his only decent year. He doesn't get to many balls, can't bend over, and has poor footwork/positioning at the bag. Richie Sexson's right knee routinely was dirty from burying it in the dirt to "get low" for fielding balls. Fielder bends at the waist.
  2. no, he's not from the US/Canada. Generally, players from Latin America will play in their nation, unless the nation doesn't have a Winter League. Escobar was an exception, since his winter league didn't want him as an A-ball kid at age 18.
  3. Mass, just an FYI, but this has been a weird 2-3 weeks in Arizona with temperatures lately ONLY in the 90-degree range at gametime, but the humidity (due to monsoons) has been 45-55%. Normally the dry heat is really easy to play in compared to midwest muggy heat, but in this case it's been pretty disgusting. So if guys like Roberts come out early (like last night), it's probably due to the abnormally high humidity wearing them out.
  4. 1e Corbeau, I remember they talked about having big reforms. But I believe they always allowed one player that had yet to play in AA. Others must have been AA, AAA, or MLB on August 1st, I think. I didn't mention him, but Lamontagne could make sense as a power reliever.
  5. Also interesting to note that in Rogers' Milb.com profile, his last 10 starts line is pretty nice. Yes, the average innings is under 5, but besides that the numbers are there 3.21 ERA 47.2 IP 28 H 28 BB (whip slightly over 1) 48 K's 2.14 GO/FO .166 avg against 0 HR
  6. Mass, what are Mark's 5 pitches? What wasn't he allowed to throw? I'm assuming 2 seamer, 4 seamer, curve, slider, changeup?
  7. JohnBriggs, as I stated, I agree with you. If there's any team Canada competition, Lawrie may do that. Otherwise, I would expect him to go. The trick will be that he'll only go to the AFL as a priority player. I originally assumed Schafer wouldn't be back in time, so I listed Komatsu/Gindl. Really, the Brewers can't go wrong with any of the three. Farris would also seem a lock as the rosters need utility/fringe-starter types. He could likely be a 6th IF and 5th OF, playing 1-2 times per week, although one year we only had three healthy/available IF's in the AFL. Most teams will have 4 catchers, so I included Zarraga as a DH/1b/C. The pitchers are hard to project this year. The Brewers used to love throwing relief prospects (Sarfate) and veterans (Wolfe, Bausher). I can't see Rogers going, since the barometer for success for him is making it through the year healthy. With a strong second half, I could see them tapping into Arnett. But most likely look for 1 starter, 1 starter/swingman, and 2 relievers to go. I think my last year working in the league, each team sent 7 guys. And as I mentioned, with the defunct Hawaiian League, I'm curious if the other Arizona League will be sort of a minor leagues for the AFL. Maybe AFL rosters get 6 players from each organization, with AFL2 getting 7 or 8 from each organization.
  8. I remember thinking it was funny when my high school went from Spring to Summer when WISAA disbanded. I don't get summer baseball, but then again I went to a school where you only usually played 1-2 sports. I could see it being useful in small towns where a person might play 4 sports.
  9. Villanueva's career has been marred by these stretches that are either dominant or pathetic. It's seemed that each season he's gone through 1-2 stretches in which he's surrendering runs each time out
  10. I thought about Schafer, but it will depend on his recovery.
  11. logan, you can! They're just known as a PTBNL
  12. nice homer! It's actually from the days they were the Grand Canyon Rafters playing out of Grand Canyon University's campus
  13. logic supports why protection exists. With stud hitters coming up, a pitcher is more likely to attack the zone against the previous hitters.
  14. What is shocking is their poor usage of the DL over the last 2-3 years. It always seems that when we wait for someone to get over a bruise or strain, it takes 7-10 days. At that point, why not use the DL? Seriously, this team has only Braun and Gomez as outfielders that can play. Last night we utilized two infielders in the outfield! If Macha would also let relievers (not named Axford) throw two innings, he wouldn't burn through 3-5 of them per game.
  15. I'm usually alright at guessing. My thoughts for this year: Taylor Green/Brett Lawrie, Eric Farris, Erik Komatsu/Caleb Gindl, Shawn Zarraga. If that's the case, the latter two will need to be in AA by Aug 1st, although I recall they wanted to change things. Also, there's the secondary AZ League this year, since the Hawaiian League is no more. For pitchers, Jeffress and Anundsen need to make up time. Maybe Ramlow and Willinsky. Probably 5 pitchers, so maybe Scarpetta or Lamontagne
  16. I know some have ragged on McLeary, but his numbers for Nashville aren't bad
  17. endaround, would it be fair to say that--through 2 months--his relief conversion could be similar to David Weathers' with the Crew?
  18. To me Casey is a very good mistake hitter. I'd keep him for now until he gets pricier
  19. At this point I'm not sure Gomez could hit .260 at any level of the minors. He's the righthanded Krynzel, only with less discipline!

    Inception

interesting about the audio issues, as I thought it was very clear and easy to understand the entire time. Neither my girlfriend nor I ever asked what was said.
  21. Capuano could be a solid guy to sign for the 5th spot in a traditional 5th role--20-30 starts, often being skipped on off days
  22. his setup seems a bit different, as I don't remember his bat pointing out infront of him until recently. He always held it high and did that Jenkins-esque wobble, but I always thought the bat started pointing over his shoulder, not pointing away from his body.

    Inception

I thought it was a cool adaptation of the themes from movies like the Matrix and the Thirteenth Floor. It took a little while to get past the lead actor being Leo, but he did a very good job. They did a good job with developing the plot and introducing characters. Perhaps I had a different understanding from most...I assumed the top was on the verge of falling at the end. But, like others said, it makes it interesting that they don't show what happens after the gun is used. Oh yeah, and mad props for using Jake Taylor in the flick
  24. Gomez is a waste of time right now. He needs to be like Scotty Po, but chooses to play like Vlad Guerrero. He reminds me of Alex Sanchez, except Gomez can play defense. But he's just as hard headed. If teammates won't call him out for his pathetic play, management needs to send him to AAA, AA, or A. He clearly needs to realize he has an elite set of tools that he isn't using.
  25. MAss, what's funny is that I remember hearing Bob Wickman used to run around MLB clubhouses referring to a certain appendage of his as "Bobo". Is Barzilla in it? I always liked that last name...could be huge in the Japanese leagues
