  1. I had another tough one last week. I had Utah St -20.5. They pushed it to a 23 point lead with under 30 secs left. No shot-clock, coaches already practically shaking hands, and the opponent shoots (and makes) a 3. I’ve been burned by that far more than I’ve been saved by a miracle,
  2. I posted this in the “questions for 2020” thread to try to show reason for relaxing a bit.
  3. That means absolutely nothing. Sometimes in the past the team has requested a certain player. Sometimes they simply have said "we need an extra outfielder" with no deep meaning behind whomever the coordinators send over.
  4. I’m expecting Monday to be another blood bath. It seems that when the Dow was at all-time highs and coronavirus wasn’t a US concern, it was like Teflon to the news. Daily news updates slid off. But Monday’s we have been getting 3 days work of panic reflected in the market, hence why they’ve been bad for several weeks. Mid week last week I moved my Roth 403(b) and HSA mutual funds primarily into MMAs and Bond Funds. Crazy we gave up our 30% 2019 gains in a matter of 8 days.
  5. Always nice to see these stretches. He's young enough that he can turn into a positive offensively, like he was in the minors. I did a comparison earlier this offseason, and at this point in his career he has been better offensively than Carlos Gomez was. However, one issue is he probably hasn't been seeing a steady stream of breaking pitchers 8" off the plate yet, since most pitchers focus on fastballs early in camp
  6. Zero chance the opener happens. This weather system is non-stop and blanketing the valley
  7. I seriously doubt if the electronic umpire had anything to do with the Brewers' not committing long term to Grandal. They knew the money was just too much to handle long term. His defense was secondary to his offense. That's why they went and got Narvaez this year. The electornics will have little effect on the overall value of catchers. I agree with you but that's not perception. Framing is, in my opinion, the most wildly overrated metric for valuation of a player in all of pro sports. You take that metric away and certain catchers are going to look far less valuable on a number of measuring sticks. Any defensive value Grandal had came from framing. He dropped more clear strikes than any big league catcher that I’ve ever seen. He struggled to catch foul tips routinely caught by catchers in MLB. He wasn’t very good at blocking, and he doesn’t have a particularly strong or accurate arm. If MLB implements the automated strike zone, he goes from a slight positive defense catcher to a hack.
  8. I’d love Braun either leadoff or 2nd. The benefit to 2nd would be his tremendous ability to hit it up the middle could be used for hit-and-runs
  9. Or that they can outright him to the minors. His results have been pretty poor. His stuff is good. I don't think I've ever heard of Stearns having something against the prior regime's acquisitions.

  11. But who will throw BP? Taylor has great stuff, but he gets hit hard an awful lot.

  13. I'm thinking his arm should be fine since he gets lots of rest and only throws one pitch.

  17. They also have to pay clubhouse dues. How much are those? I can't imagine too crazy. It's good to see them get a pretty significant bump. More would be better of course, but $1,600 a month with housing covered and a food stipend is definitely a livable wage during the season. Also covered are medical(probably all insurance) and gym membership. This is a very significant majority of their basic spending needs that are covered before the $1,600 even comes into play. They certainly aren't getting rich off this, but it's a very livable wage(during the season) considering everything. Last I heard, dues were something like $8-12/day.

  19. I'd estimate that that statement is true for nearly every pitcher in MLB history. Saying shorter outings lead to better stats is like saying that teams that outscore their opponents will usually win.

  21. They don't realize it because it probably isn't true. He has a starters arsenal, his K rate and BB rate looked good deeper into games. He just gave up a couple more HR than you'd like which isn't a huge surprise when you are in the process of being stretched out. Nothing he has done suggests he is a RP at this point. You can make that case with Peralta if you ignore what he has done this offseason since Peralta actually has a RP arsenal, but Houser throws I think its 5 different pitches, no reason he can't be a starter. People have just latched onto he is a RP because of like a 10 IP sample while being stretched out having a bad ERA. His xFIP as a starter last year was 3.71 and it was a 3.31 as a RP. He also has a minor league career to look at. His numbers were no bueno down there and most likely will continue to be at the MLB level. I’d rather start the Anderson’s of the world and let Houser be an elite pen arm. Houser reached the majors at a young age and looked promising after we got him for Gomez. It's hard to evaluate anything in the injured-elbow years. I'm looking forward to him being a solid member of the rotation.
  22. Really? I thought it was assumed by everyone that Woodruff was the most ready for the rotation given what he showed in 2018. It really seemed like something clicked and he learned how to attack the zone out of the pen. To be honest, I think many fans thought Woodruff and Burnes were potential 1's or 2's in the making, the biggest difference in opinion was Peralta. Some saw him as a #3, some saw him as a 5, some as a reliever or AAA depth. Given that he's had success with one pitch, but rarely hits his spots, I need to see how good this new-found slider is. Last year's big shock was that Peralta went from 90-91 mph (in 2018) to 94-96 mph (in 2019).
  23. What makes him the next best after Woodruff? Burned has 4-5 pitches, Peralta currently one. Both throw hard. Both have something to prove.
  24. They also have to pay clubhouse dues.
  25. I'll say: Brewers 90-72 Cardinals 87-75 Reds 86-76 Cubs 77-85 Pirates 71-91
