  1. Have they opened it up for non-all stars? I feel cheated we never saw Russell the Muscle, Jack Cust, and others compete.
  2. Tigeruppercut, isn't 21 pretty normal for A+? Especially skipping A-ball.
  3. I miss the DFE. But I'd like to see it tweaked to include college as well. So that if a kid is drafted out of high school but goes to college, their first 3 years (or 2 for 21-yo sophs) they are still property of the organization that drafted them out of HS. However, if they do not sign by a date and choose to return to college for the final year, they then can re-enter the draft. It would give an MLB team a chance to nab a steal out of HS and pay him later, but it would also give that kid some leverage if he so chooses. the draft slotting stuff is stupid right now. If they want to slot, it needs to be hard slots. There need to be regional combines held, perhaps with the draft pushed back two weeks and Rookie ball extending into September. I like the idea of kids declaring for the draft. MLB's Scouting Bureau does a nice job, and could open up a branch that helps kids hear comments from MLB officials, agents, scouts, etc.
  4. I should add that what also contributed to my pondering of the issue is golf. I have--by no means--a textbook swing. But at my peak it allowed me to be a +1.8 handicapper and I can still average around 300-310 yards per drive. I move my left foot in my back swing, I sometimes step through the ball on follow through, I have a weak left hand and come absolutely nowhere close to parallel. Yet it works. When looking at it on video, it's easy to note that while it's unorthodox, I accomplish nearly all of the goals of "perfect mechanics" even though my swing does not look pretty. I wasn't trying to cherrypick with Sale, Bumgardner, or Kershaw. They all have uniqueness to their motion. But they all probably accomplish the goals of perfect mechanics at varying positions in their motions (with the golf analogy). An interesting thing you mention about how the baseball might be too light. Yes, it's about 35% of a football. That made me think about a softball. I never once had a sore arm as a kid playing baseball. But in college intramurals I would get severe pain from throwing a softball in the biceps region. I did have to alter my motion when throwing a softball--I wish I remembered what I did. Some guys are meant to get hurt. Two of the very best-pitched Brewers games I saw in person were thrown by Kyle Peterson. We'll never know if the mechanical changes caused the injuries. Stoutdude04 had a nice point...don't draft (at least early) guys with mechanics that you want to change. Also, semantics here, but didn't Mike Jones tear his UCL after he'd twice had shoulder surgery? Also, in the 90s it seems like we were constantly hearing "rotator cuff." For the last 15 years it's been UCL. For a while about 10 years ago labrums were always getting injured. Lately (since Sheets) we've been hearing about torn flexor tendons. Maybe diagnoses are just more precise, or maybe this is just perception. But it seems like the types of arm injuries have been parts of trends in the last 20 or so years. If there's something to my observation (no clue how to find evidence), then what does that tell us? Are teams more careful with shoulders now than they used to be? Is strength-training helping to prevent those injuries? Who were the last major star pitchers with rotator cuff surgery? I think Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Ramon Martinez, and Alex Fernandez all effectively had their careers end from it, but in all cases they were relatively old with lots of innings. Seems like in the 90s "rotator cuff" was much more of a common injury than UCL.
  5. Friday night I was watching games in a Vegas sports book and I had the joy of having Kershaw and Bumgarner often throwing on screens next to each other. With Sale, Scherzer and Jungmann also throwing today, I can't help but wonder something that's bothered me for a long time...why do organizations often tinker with the natural arm motion a kid has? I remember pondering this with Kyle Peterson and Mark Rogers as well. The three lefties I mentioned above all have some quirks in their deliveries. i know TH also alluded to this in his piece on the draft this weekend.
  6. It never hurts to take these guys. We've had some before that teams thought were unsignable (Scooter) and our scouts really did their homework.
  7. I knew Zach Taylor sounded REALLY familiar (besides seemingly 4 boys per class being Zach's and 2 girls AND 2 boys per class being Taylor's). Taught him in HS just a couple years ago...nice kid.
  8. Perry is a hefty boy. I was going to compare him to Prince, except that's not fair. He's 3" taller than Prince and 40 lbs less. Seems like a kid that--if we signed--we'd want him to practically live with the weight training and dietary staffs for the entire off-season and he might look completely different next year. Probably a tough sign, but would be nice to get some left-handed power at 1b in the fold, especially from a HS kid
  9. MrTPlush, why would the Brewers release Lohse? He has quite a bit of value.
  10. Nice outing. Sitting 93-4 all night. flashed a curve and changeup. Wonder if he gets a second start or do they give it to Wagner.
  11. jericho...that's easy for us fans to say. But given the dancing around in the box that the stupid catcher was doing on a strike AND given that he's been the NL's hottest hitter for the last 6 weeks, a HBP is more efficient than a walk. Walking him would have been considered solid strategy with 1st base open and weak hitters Mercer and Liriano to follow.
  12. Didn't expect to see Jungmann consistently hitting 93-4. Not throwing the curve for strikes, but keeping it unhittable. Nice changeup for K in the 4th. I have to believe the HBP was on purpose given the antics on the first two pitches (a strike and barely a ball)
  13. MLB Network guys mentioned that he has a golf grip. As a scratch golfer, the only other player I've seen with a golf grip is JJ Hardy (how he has his thumbs straight down the bat instead of across it)
  14. the Brewers always have good reasons for these moves. We know Wagner and Cravy aren't eligible. Maybe with Thorny they want him to continue getting stretched out. Or maybe his velocity and command still isn't there. I can't really say anything negative with Jungmann as his 2014 was really good. It's worth giving him a look for a start or two
  15. AKCheesehead, Yes, we have purchased the contracts of Wagner and Cravy, but now that their 1st options have been used, let's send them back and forth as much as we want. So the next time we need a 5th starter is June 9th. Wagner pitched the 31st. So he won't be eligible to return. We'll likely turn to Jungmann or Thorny for our next outing, but then I could see Cravy back.
  16. speaking of Eric Fryer, he's had a nice minor league career. Too bad we only got Chase Wright for him
  17. I saw most of the Dbacks batted balls were weak grounders. I'm still baffled how Goldy hit that ball. Not even sure it was a strike.
  18. guessing Fiers likely goes tomorrow, with a minor leaguer on Tuesday. Garza likely pushed back to Thurs or Fri. Maybe pitching without any preparation helped Garza to stop overthinking.
  19. I can't think of a better place to spend my summer than Montana. Long days, rarely need lights, low humidity, small town feel, etc etc
  20. We had some nice depth for a bit. Minors had Salome, Lucroy, Fryer, Corporan, Maldonado...all of whom have been in MLB except the mysterious Salome. I'm still a believer that I'd rather not draft catchers early. I'd rather sign a journeyman or hope a 15-30th rounder pans out than waste a pick on a player that would be ranked much lower at any other position.
  21. Austin Tatious, I don't hear those critiques of Medeiros. He's what, 19? How can you expect him to go to A-Ball and dominate out of high school? Reading all kinds of articles and tracking box scores, it sounds like he's having an outstanding year. He's young, learning to be a pro, learning to throw every 5th day, and playing against quality competition. His strikeouts and groundouts are great. For people upset that the Brewers just set up down the middle, I think that it's a reminder that he's young. But realistically Jamey Wright and Derek Lowe were guys with heavy sinkers that needed catchers to set up down the middle. Give the kid time. I love having a mid-90s lefty that people seemingly can't hit or figure out. My concern about guys shooting up draft boards is Eric Arnett. I never got that pick, and I'm sorry to say I was right. I'd rather be wrong any time.
  22. like the move. Wagner should be something like 9-0 so far.
  23. I've always paid attention to Arcia's BB:K ratio. He's reminded me of Brantley. last season I was predicting he'd be our SS late this year. Seggy has really bounced back. But I could see us playing Seggy, Arcia, and Sardinas/Gennett in an IF together. Not a ton of power, but 3 decent potential bats. Plus we get plenty of power from other spots.
  24. I haven't heard Levering yet. Heck I probably won't all year since XM only plays home team feeds. But he can't be more boring than Joe Block.
  25. I say give the kid time. He's lacking experience. As he learns to harness his stuff, they can focus more on command. Reminds me a bit of the talk of Derek Lowe or Randy Johnson as youngsters. Set up down the middle and hope it's a strike.
