  1. I'm there too. I really can't reconcile in my mind the idea that they're going to use a potentially brutal defensive combo of Vogelbach/Hiura as their 1B. I said this earlier in the thread as well. Getting Wong just feels like the first domino to fall for the Brewers to do something substantial via trade. Somone else said it, but Hiura feels like a square peg for the Brewers round hole now. I am holding to my belief it will be something unforeseen and for someone we didn't know was available (e.g. Matt Chapman, Matt Olson).
  2. Why are the Indians trying to move Ramirez again? He's under contract this year for $9.4m and has a team option in 2022 for $11m and 2023 for $13m or 3 years $33.4m for MVP level production in his prime (age 28-30 seasons). Sure they traded Lindor but that was only because they weren't giving him a $300m deal. They still have Bieber, Civale, Plesac and McKenzie in their rotation and Ramirez, Franmil Reyes and just signed Eddie Rosario in their lineup. They seem somewhat like contenders, maybe not for the division with the Twins and White Sox, but certainly the Wild Card with that pitching. What am I missing?
  3. Thinking more and more about this, I think Hiura is going to be dealt. I know Stearns gave some lip service to him going to 1B but I think it is just that. He's Prince Fielder's height at 1B and has never played there in his career. There is no DH in the NL this year. Wong and Hiura are both 2B-only in their career. I don't care what McCalvy just tweeted about Hiura to 1B. I will believe it when I see it.
  4. Would Hiura for Story make sense now? I think it would but I would make it contingent on the possibility of the Brewers being given a window to negotiate an extension with Story.
  5. I would prefer Matt Chapman in Oakland. Would seem to cost less in prospect capital and you arguably would be able to do Chapman (who is a FA after 2023) for Hiura (who isn't a FA until after 2025) + maybe someone like Tristen Lutz. The cost control of Hiura and additional 2 years of control might balance some of the prospect capital for Oakland. Has there been an actual indication that the A's are taking offers/interested in moving Chapman, or is it just a hypothetical? There has at least been chatter about Ramirez. Purely hypothetical on my part. Chapman fits the profile of a player the A's can't afford soon given the salary increases he will be due in arbitration. If the A's can get a hitter that profiles to be as good or better than Chapman like Hiura, plus the reduction in salary, plus the ability to put him at 2B or DH, AND the extra two years of control, I would think they would have some interest. Pure speculation on my part based on the history of how they have operated in the past.
  6. I would prefer Matt Chapman in Oakland. 7. Wong signing was one week late. I would have been all over a Hiura for Arenado trade.
  8. With Wong in the fold, let's get wild and revisit what I posted above. Would this deal get any traction with the A's: Keston Hiura, Josh Hader, Garrett Mitchell and Brice Turang for Matt Chapman and Matt Olson Without getting into analysis of the fairness of the deal for either side or long term implications of depleting the farm, a lineup of Cain-Yelich-Chapman-Olson-Garcia-Narvaez-Wong-Urias sure looks sexy on paper.
  9. If Arcia and Turang gets it done, you make this trade immediately and start negotiations on a long term deal with Story as soon as the trade is official. Unfortunately, I think Arcia has little trade value and it would take one of Urias, Small or Ashby + Turang + lottery ticket to get the trade done. In the above scenario, I am actually hoping to hang on to Urias, and deal Small or Ashby as Story at SS allows you to have a non-traditional corner 3B (no power) with Urias. Additionally, if you deal Urias, the Brewers are stuck with the same issue at 3B and 1B.
  10. If the Brewers rolled out a lineup of the following, would it be good enough with Burnes and Woodruff at the top of the rotation and Hader and Williams at the back end: Player 1: .288/.348/.761 Player 2: .296/.388/.870 Player 3: .266/.388/.843 Player 4: .271/.324/.746 Player 5: .267/.355/.753 Player 6: .206/.332/.741 Player 7: .226/.315/.635 Player 8: .244/.295/.660 Those are the career averages of every current projected starter for the Brewers. If the top five (Cain, Yelich, Hiura, Garcia, Narvaez) meet that and Player 7 (Urias) jumps that to around .250 and keeps the AVG-OBP in the 80-90 differential, the Brewers could be in relatively decent shape. Hearing Stearns all offseason, this has always been the plan. Assume 2020 was the aberration and each of the regulars will return to their career averages, with Urias ascending. Risky proposition but not out of the realm of possibility.
  11. Cron, yes. Miller, no. Miller is way too similar to Eric Sogard to me. Former Brewer coming off two years better than expected since he left, only to (likely) stink upon return. I'd rather have Robertson and Urias get 3B. While there are similarities, Miller has crushed RHP since leaving MKE. .939 vs RHP in 2019 and .828 in 2020. Between Miller and Robertson we would have 2 guys that complement each other very well as our 3B platoon, and both have a little positional flexibility on their bench days. Can disagree with statistics. Miller simply has no upside to me at age 31and the situation feels too familiar with Sogard. I guess it just comes down to I would rather give time to Robertson (age 26) and Urias (age 23) and see if they can reclaim their shine rather than go with Miller.
  12. Puig's 162 game average numbers are about what I expected from Avisail Garcia when he signed: .277/.348/.823, 25 HR, 78 RBI Garcia 162 game average: .271/.324/.746, 19 HR, 77 RBI When looked at in a vacuum, sure does seem like Garcia was an overpay given Puig can't find work.
  13. Cron, yes. Miller, no. Miller is way too similar to Eric Sogard to me. Former Brewer coming off two years better than expected since he left, only to (likely) stink upon return. I'd rather have Robertson and Urias get 3B.
  14. For discussion's sake, if the Brewers were to sign Mitch Moreland or CJ Cron for 1B and Travis Shaw or Jake Lamb for 3B, would that move the needle for you? Unfortunately, these are the type of moves left for the Brewers to add depth at the corner IF positions.
  15. At this point in time, I am ready to burn the system down again to fit pieces into the Brewers competitive window with Yelich in his prime. Call up the Oakland A's and offer them Josh Hader, Brice Turang, Garrett Mitchell and one other piece for Matt Chapman and Matt Olson. I don't care if that other piece is Ethan Small or Aaron Ashby either. The window with Yelich in his prime is small, the top of the rotation could be one of the best in Brewers history, and frankly, I am tired of Wisconsin teams blowing their MVPs windows for championships. Chapman and Olson are paid $6.5m and $5m in 2021 and are likely to be getting significant raises in 2022 assuming they play to form and the A's will eventually have to move them. With the Brewers sitting out FA, the only way they are going to fill holes at 1B and 3B is with a trade. If the A's are willing to entertain the notion of moving Chapman and/or Olson, they should be the main targets. Maybe this should have gone in the vent thread
  16. https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/mlb/brewers/2021/02/02/brewers-budget-limits-big-offseason-signings-deals/4352348001/ While Haudricourt has no scoops on any rumors, there is this. Perhaps I should put this on the 2021 Pessimism thread
  17. Glasnow, Meadows, Baz for not even a playoff spot. They have nothing to show for those three players. Add in the fact that Cole and Taillon are now fronting the Yankees rotation and it just has to be unbelievably frustrating to be a Pirate fan to think what could have been with Cole, Taillon and Glasnow.
  18. Is Renato Nunez a FA or are you proposing a trade? Everything I see says he’s still an under contract Oriole.
  19. While certainly extremely unlikely to happen, Kris Bryant really fits all the Brewers needs. He’s signed for 1 year at $19.5m. Understanding the extremely unlikely nature of a trade, what would be fair and what would you be willing to deal to acquire Bryant? In terms of fair, quite frankly I think if the Cubs weren’t in the Brewers division, a Avisail Garcia for Bryant deal might be fair with the Brewers eating the additional $9.5m between the contracts.
  20. Independent of position, an OF rotation of Yelich-Cain-Garcia-Rosario COULD be pretty nice for 2021. Cain is only signed through 2022 and the Brewers hold the team option for 2022 on Garcia. Rosario may end up being more in the long term plans in the OF, especially if Cain doesn't regain his pre-2019 form and Garcia plays like he did in 2020.
  21. Rosenthal’s article is sort of all over the place in terms of how likely this move is to happening. Here’s an excerpt from the article: The Cardinals are in discussions with the Rockies about a deal that would bring the five-time All-Star third baseman to St. Louis, according to major-league sources. No deal appears close, and the other players who might be involved are not known. Arenado, 29, likely would waive his no-trade clause to join the Cardinals, and perhaps agree to push back his right to opt out after the 2021 season. The Rockies, to escape his $199 million guarantee over the next six seasons, almost certainly would absorb at least one high-priced veteran from the Cardinals while also receiving prospects in the deal. League sources offered varied assessments of where the talks stood Thursday night. One cautioned that a trade might not happen at all, but others believe the Rockies are motivated to move Arenado and the Cardinals are motivated to acquire him. The Braves also checked in on Arenado but made no progress toward a deal, a source said. While Arenado disappeared against the Crew in the 2018 playoffs, I have no doubt that the Cardinal devil magic will turn him into a Brewer killer. The idea of Goldschmidt-Arenado 3-4 in StL is depressing me.
  22. IMO, McNeil is the exact type of hitter the Brewers need to target. High AVG, high OBP, doesn't strike out a ton. Any production on O besides that is gravy. His plate discipline would fit in nicely in front of Yelich and would likely score 110+ runs in that role. As a centerpiece in a Hader deal would not be enough for me, but coupled with a 3B prospect like Brett Baty and a lottery ticket prospect, could get me to jump on a Hader deal.
  23. Diaz was that guy for me. Harrison and Brinson became no issue for me when Cain was signed because Yelich and Cain were going to be in the OF for the next 5 years. Lest we forget in 2016, Diaz had 20 HR and 11 SB and a slash of .264/.358/.827 in Appleton. While the AVG and power dropped slightly in Carolina, he skyrocketed in 2019 at New Orleans with a .305/.395/.973 line with 26 HR. It sure seemed like he was going to be an OBP machine with power ala Rickie Weeks. He's only going to be 25 this season so the potential is still there, but yeah the Brewers quite obviously won this deal...by a lot.
  24. Colin Moran would actually be a solid target for the Brewers. I am not sure how the Pirates line up with the Brewers or what would be fair compensation but I don't believe he is in the Pirates long-term rebuilding plans e.g when they anticipate competing again. Perhaps one of the many young Brewer catchers (Henry, Kahle) and one of their draft picks from last year (Cantrelle).
