  1. If true, I really want to see the financials of the deal. If the numbers are close, I would say that Hart's "pay cut" talk was pretty disingenuous. Now what...?
  2. Mariners are the other team on Hart according to Bob Nightengale and Adam McCalvy
  3. While I think Hart is the right choice for 1B, I have to say that I also have some small interest in seeing what Melvin will do in the event Hart is not re-signed. While Hart is undoubtedly the best option, he is also the oldest of the known options and would have the least amount of years left in terms of team control. Davis and Morrison were both highly thought of prospects who have yet to reach their potential but the potential remains and if the Brewers could tap into it, they have a team controlled 1B for a longer period of time. This will also give them some roster flexibility as well with Morris and Rogers about a year away.
  4. Ah! I misread that. My mistake. Having said that... No!!
  5. Sounds a lot like the Mets 1B will still be in NY unless they are willing to accept that he will not command anything more than a C prospect. Like I said earlier, the most the Brewers should part with for I. Davis is a Ariel Pena, a player who has some talent but also has some serious warts (Pena's is BB).
  6. I would bet that Doug Melvin thinks he already has that person on the roster--Juan Francisco. Not according to tweets indicating the Brewers will pivot to Ike Davis or Logan Morrison in the event they don't re-sign Hart. Francisco just isn't an option and the Brewers stated that 1B is the priority this offseason. Why say that and why put yourself out there if Francisco was already your fallback option?
  7. Oh man...that would have been a TERRIBLE move. Davis may pan out as a bounce back candidate but I am unwilling to risk Thornburg on a bounce back candidate. If they want young pitching, I could see Melvin offering Ariel Pena but nothing more than that.
  8. So glad we didn't make the move on Trumbo...Jayson Stark had an interesting tweet on him: "Only 7 players ever had a lower OPS in a 30-HR season than he had in '13 (.747)"
  9. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10116022/brett-anderson-traded-oakland-athletics-colorado-rockies Hmm....I wish the Brewers would have been able to swing a deal for Anderson. I know Pomeranz was the centerpiece of the Ubaldo Jimenez deal but he has been pretty bad at the MLB level. Seems like a Jungmann may be have been able to pull off this deal for the Crew. Anderson may have been a terrific buy low candidate.
  10. Dear god no...If Gomez is dealt for anything other a stud CONTROLLABLE pitching prospect I will be furious.
  11. Thornburg was fantastic in a SP role and I would handicap him as the #5. I really like Thornburg and hope he flourishes in the SP role, but if he does not, he could settle in nicely as a 7th or 8th inning guy. He, Smith, Kintzler and Henderson could make up a nice core of bullpen pieces if that is the route the Brewers choose to go.
  12. That looks like a really nice deal for the Angels. Skaggs and Santiago are two young lefty arms that a rotation could be built around. Especially considering they only have to give up a Mark Trumbo. Put another way, I wish we had an overrated slugging hitter to deal for Skaggs and Santiago as they would look really nice behind Gallardo, Lohse and Peralta.
  13. If we did option A and: 1. Gallardo returns to form and is signed long term 2. Peralta continue to develop into a #2/3 3. Walker is the #1 he is projected to be The Brewers would have a really nice top of the rotation for the next 5 years, while still putting out a relatively solid offensive core with Braun, Lucroy, Segura and hopefully solid contributors in Gennett and Davis.
  14. Starting to feel like Davis may be the most likely of Hart, Morrison & Davis. I would have bet money on Hart or Morrison but based on the latest "rumors" it appears Hart wants to test the market and the Brewers interest may not be there for Morrison. I guess Davis wouldn't be the worst option but he is definitely a boom or bust type of acquisition.
  15. Honestly, I see no fit with them whatsoever. They are looking for a #3 SP. Unless you think dealing Lohse for Trumbo is a win, which I don't, this is not the next Brewers 1B.
  16. This... Acquiring Morrison does not close the door on Corey Hart returning IMO. I think trading for Morrison is simply insurance in the event Hart is not re-signed and/or insurance in the event Hart gets hurt. Provided Hart is re-signed after a Morrison deal, I see Morrison as filling the exact role bensheeps mentions as well as an able bat to sub in when Hart's knees need a break.
  17. I am a little disheartened by the comments "there has to be a fit from both sides..." I think that is a little bit of agent speak but rings hollow to me. With Hart having just collected $10 million for sitting on the bench, I think his offer of taking less than market value should be honored. I by no means am saying that he should have a drastic cut to say $3 million but I am saying that there is an obvious fit on both sides and that any "negotiation" should simply be over just how much of a drop from $10 million/year is fair.
  18. Agreed. A Hellweg-type is not a guy I would be targeting as a main piece in a Gomez trade. In fact, Hellweg would be the third piece I would be looking for as his numbers in Triple AAA to me are indicative of a guy who probably won't translate into much at the MLB level. A 3.16 ERA in Nashville is great, however when you look at his 1.46 WHIP, it is quite terrifying to think of the Brewers giving up a talent like Gomez for a package where a Hellweg-type in the centerpiece or a main component.
  19. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIL/1996.shtml I have often wondered if the 1996 Brewers could have made the playoffs with a pitching staff that didn't have an ERA of 5.14. They finished 8 GB the Orioles who won the Wild Card who also ironically had an ERA of 5.14. That 1996 team had some legitimate talent across the board even if they were a little short in the OF. Speed with Vina, Valentin and Listach. Power with Vaughn, Jaha and Valentin. Average with Cirillo, Seitzer and Jaha. That was a solid team.
  20. I firmly believe that Seattle will be landing spot for David Price for the prospects you just mentioned. A 1-2 of Felix-Price...Seattle would have a serious shot in the West
  21. http://m.espn.go.com/mlb/story?storyId=10093236 Looks like two of Hart's four interested clubs (Brewers, Red Sox, Rockies, Rays) have filled their vacant 1B with Napoli heading back to Boston and Morneau in Colorado. Gotta think his re-signing is inevitable now.
  22. Correct. However, a Gomez trade now coupled with a Winter Meetings Gallardo and Lohse deal, followed by a mid-season Ryan Braun trade, assuming he is the old Braun, could arguably have them in the top 10. Good luck trying to sell a massive tradeoff of big league talent to Attanasio. He'd probably give the OK to signing another fairly pricey veteran player before he'd greenlight trading any of those four guys for prospects, much less multiple of those four. I agree that Attanasio will never allow a fire sale. The point is that the Brewers could reach the top 10 rather quickly if they so desired. And you are also spot on in your assessment that Attanasio will sign another pricey vet this offseason. My bet all along has been Garza at 5 years $75 million.
  23. I won't stop holding my breath until Yuni B is guaranteed $1 million. Hopefully, from the Cubs.
  24. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/10074900/mlb-trade-value-rankings-part-1 Based on this list, the Brewers have 4 of the most valuable trade assets in MLB. 50. Braun 49. Segura 44. Lucroy 33. Gomez Fun read...
  25. Oops...good call! I read the size for a different guy on Baseball Reference (listed at 6'4" and 220 who wasn't Jaha). My mistake!
