  1. UGH!! Please god no...
  2. Thank You! If it is Ubaldo Jimenez or Ervin Santana and the Brewers lose another 1st rounder, BF will explode. If it is Garza...well, let's see the costs.
  3. This was my thought precisely as well. If Garza were to be signed, I would have to imagine Melvin would be more inclined to deal a young pitcher like Thornburg to fill 1B. I think the real question for Melvin in this scenario is are the Brewers better with Garza & Ike or Thornburg & Reynolds/Francisco/Overbay. Of course those aren't the only two options. The third is Garza & Reynolds/Francisco/Overbay, with Thornburg in the pen.
  4. I'll have to find where I put this but this has been my "Doug Melvin Special Under the Radar" prediction all offseason. 5 years $75 million was my early offseason guess. Not saying its good or bad, just that it seemed like a Melvin move. EDIT: December 4 http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?p=871485#p871485
  5. Hank Aaron's # being retired is an homage to his Milwaukee legacy and not his Brewer legacy. While I am too young by almost 2 decades to remember the Milwaukee Braves, I remember distinctly my grandmother telling me how the Braves leaving Milwaukee ripped her heart out and left a hole in the City. Hank Aaron should've been a Milwaukee Brave lifer and the Braves decision to move to Atlanta has no bearing on what should have been a career in Milwaukee. His number being retired by the Brewers is more an honor to what he performed while calling Milwaukee home.
  6. The Yankees had an 89 win season in 2008, won the World Series in 2009, lost in the ALCS in 2010, lost in the ALDS in 2011, lost in the ALCS in 2012 and had an 85 win season in 2013. The Ray lost in the World Series in 2008, had an 84 win season in 2009, lost in the ALDS in 2010, lost in the ALDS in 2011, won 90 games in 2012 and lost in the ALDS in 2013. Those are great stats to prove your point for sure but Tampa is the best run small market team in baseball and has constant turnover on their roster whereas the Yankees continually run out a perennial powerhouse with constants and influxes of talent because they can outbid everyone. Why should the Rays have to trade fan favorites like David Price and James Shields if the Yankees or Red Sox do not? Same for the Pirates, Royals, Indians, Orioles, Brewers, Twins, Padres, Rockies? If they aren't flawless in execution, their window is open briefly before it is shut whereas the mega markets windows are forever open. This is a fair system?
  7. I also have an issue with his number being retired. However, winning a Cy Young and an MVP in the same year (1981) and being (arguably) the MVP of the only World Series team (1982) the Brewers ever had makes it a little more palatable.
  8. I have to say no to Hoffman and Fielder. Hoffman was phenomenal in 2009 and atrocious in 2010. I have severe reservations about retiring his number. Fielder...my thought is this...If they didn't retire Cecil Cooper or Geoff Jenkins #, then they shouldn't retire Prince Fielder's. Braun will be retired if: 1. Puts up typical Ryan Braun numbers for the next 3 seasons 2. Rehabilitates his image in the Milwaukee community Lucroy has a shot if he can be our catcher and produce like he has for the next 5-6 seasons. Only time will tell on those two items.
  9. I have been saying this for years. Until there is competitive balance in what each team in MLB can spend, the small market teams will have to run a flawless organization to maintain success. There is no reason Prince Fielder should not have been a career Brewer or David Price a career Ray. Unfortunately, MLB acts like the large markets and small markets are in direct competition with one another instead of all being under the same corporation. Instead of all teams being the same coffee company, MLB treats the New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc... markets as Starbucks and the Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Cleveland, etc... markets as Colectivo. It's beyond frustrating and I would gladly give up multiple seasons via a lockout to get spending balance.
  10. I like Gindl better as well...however I don't think the FO does. That's why I put Schafer over Gindl.
  11. It appears that the following currently make up the 2014 Milwaukee bench: C Maldonado 1B Overbay OR Francisco 2B Weeks/Gennett UTIL Bianchi OF Schafer Unfortunately, I see a ton of light hitting and position specific players i.e. Gennett only a 2B, Overbay only a 1B. Fortunately, I think the Brewers have a backup 3B in Reynolds so when Ramirez needs a day, Reynolds shifts to 3B and Overbay subs at 1B. The only case to be made for Juan Francisco making the team over Overbay right now is his ability to play (terribly) 3B. Francisco though is the only real bench power we have right now. Ugh...the roster construction has really limited the Brewers options and may be the reason Francisco makes the team...great.
  12. While I can agree with you about the Cardinals and Pirates, I definitely disagree about whether the Reds are trending downwards. With their everyday lineup, they have already lost Choo and Hanigan, and there are still rumors that Phillips may be dealt. Looking at their everyday lineup they have the following guys, with their 2013 slash lines, currently penciled in to start: C Mesoraco .238/.287/.362 SS Cozart .254/.284/.381 LF Ludwick .240/.293/.326 (Injured in 2013) or Heisey .237/.279/.415 CF Billy Hamilton (spent most of the year in the minors but from all indications may not hit enough to be an everyday MLB player ala Dee Gordon) I think the Brewers lineup on January 21, 2014 is better than the Reds and could possibly be substantially better than the Reds. Pitching is another story where the Reds SP are better to significantly better today. However, the Reds will soon be in a predicament with that as well. Arroyo likely is leaving now and the rumor is Bailey will not be affordable after 2014. Latos and Cueto free after 2015 similar to the Brewers with Gallardo & Lohse also free after 2015. A lot will depend on Leake & Cingrani, like the Brewers with Peralta & Thornburg. Overall though, I see regression with the Reds and a descent from the success they have experienced over the past few seasons. In my mind, the Brewers and Reds will be battling for 3rd place with low to mid 80s win totals in 2014.
  13. I was coming on here to post the same thing...I wonder what Skip Schumaker thinks about Matt Holliday ignoring this chapter of the unwritten rules of baseball. I know a lot of us long to have the consistency of the Cardinals organization, but man, I don't think I would trade our inconsistency for their consistency if it requires their ridiculous arrogance. What a joke.
  14. Kind of hope that is what they have in mind for Reynolds. Maybe we can get the Mets interested in a change of scenery trade, Juan Fan for Ike Davis?
  15. Way to make Mark Reynolds my new favorite Brewer. Rob Deer was an awesome guy to a 7 year old Warning Track Power...
  16. 2B Weeks SS Segura RF Braun 3B Ramirez C Lucroy CF Gomez 1B Reynolds LF Davis 2 things... #1 Rickie will be playing a majority of 2B this year. Just call it a hunch. #2 Still like the Aoki deal but man would Nori look good at the top of the lineup.
  17. Honestly....I think Hunter Morris would put up better overall numbers than Reynolds or Francisco. He might not have the OBP of Reynolds but I doubt he strikes out 200+ times like Reynolds will. I'd rather have traded anything reasonable (not Thornburg) for Ike. This signing is a RH batted version of Francisco.
  18. I can just envision the days when the lineup reads: 7. Reynolds 8. Weeks 9. Pitcher Defensively, the pitchers and catchers of the Cubs, Pirates, Reds & Cardinals may be all that is required.
  19. Isn't Mark Reynolds basically a RH version of Juan Francisco? Or a 1B version of Rickie Weeks, high strikeouts + high walks + high power? I guess if he can hit his 162 game average of .233/.329/.464 33 HR,93 RBI it wouldn't be a total loss, but man...Ike is a much better option, even at the loss of an arm not named Thornburg or Nelson.
  20. @Sveum: All should be easily reachable goals for Ryan this season. I honestly am expecting something close to .315/.390/.550, 35 HR, 125 RBI or his second best career season behind 2012. I am an optimist, but I think he will eventually return to being a Brewer icon after his fall.
  21. http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/story/_/id/10298436/clayton-kershaw-los-angeles-dodgers-agree-seven-year-deal-worth-215-million If any pitcher is worth this insane amount of money, I would say Kershaw is. Wow though...$30 million per year for a guy who plays only 30-ish of 162. Crazy amount of money in the big markets of baseball these days.
  22. http://blog.chron.com/ultimateastros/2014/01/06/astros-have-renewed-interest-in-arizona-for-spring-training/ Maybe the Brewers and Astros can partner and get a new facility built somewhere in Arizona. Seems that is the way the Dodgers/Sox, Royals/Rangers, Indians/Reds & Rockies/Diamondbacks all got their wonderful new complexes built recently. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f0P-XQeKJe4/T2ceNj1ej9I/AAAAAAAABIg/fCeJIN4EGSs/s1600/cactus_league.jpg
  23. Agreed JB...The mascot is for kids not adults. However, I think it is still a pretty weak attempt at a mascot. The backwards hat, the sneakers, the lack of pants, the sad eyes...Cubs fans couldn't say the same thing about Bernie because I think he appeals to adults and kids alike but they might be able to say something about the lameness that is Bernie's Chalet/slide when compared to the old stein at County Stadium.
  24. I would say yes and no to this. Yes, because having Yo, Peralta, Thornburg and Nelson all become legitimate #2s or #3s would show some progress in the Brewers ability to develop pitching prospects to the Major League level, even if it is the only 4 in DM's tenure. I would say no because the problem still remains with the Brewers identification of projectable pitching talent in the high rounds of the draft. Go back to the beginning of this century and our list of first round or supplemental round pitchers include: 2001: Mike Jones 2004: Mark Rogers 2006: Jeremy Jeffress 2008: Jake Odorizzi 2008: Evan Frederickson 2009: Eric Arnett 2009: Kyle Heckathorn 2010: Dylan Covey 2011: Taylor Jungmann 2011: Jed Bradley I understand that Jeffress and Odorizzi brought Greinke which brought Segura, but 2 out of 10 in the first or supplemental round is not good. While the jury is still out on Jungmann and Bradley, it sure does appear that our scouting department missed the boat on those guys. My point is that our economic standing in baseball truly requires us to draft and develop and that is something that has traditionally been all hitting and no pitching, which are not mutually exclusive. We can do well at both and will have to in order to sustain any type of success that isn't fleeting.
