  1. Rough for Houser to get tagged with that run when he’s done his job the entire inning.
  2. I don’t think it had much to do with his arm, he just didn’t get rid of the ball with any urgency.
  3. One pitch in and it feels like last night already. Urias has to get that throw off much quicker against Chisholm.
  4. He’s probably just happy to have escaped being locked in the pitching lab the past three weeks.
  5. Manny Piña has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a fractured toe. Brewers recalled Luke Maile. Brewers have also added RHP Patrick Weigel from the alternate site and optioned Phil Bickford.
  6. Lineup for tonight has been announced. Taylor ® LF Narvaez (L) C Garcia ® RF Hiura ® 1B Shaw (L) 3B Urias ® SS Bradley (L) CF Reyes ® 2B Houser ® SP A few observations... Wong isn’t starting, Reyes starts at 2B. Tyrone Taylor has now started three games this year and his position in the batting order for those three games has been 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Castano actually has fairly wide reverse splits in his short career thus far. He’s been better against right-handed batters (.675 OPS against) than left-handed batters (.789 OPS against), but it’s a very small sample (166 plate appearances). Keston Hiura is facing a LHP that barely strikes anyone out. It sort of feels like a “now or never” type of moment for him. Not that he won’t get plenty more chances, but in the sense it’s probably an important night for him to take a step in the right direction. It looks like a split squad lineup they recycled from a month ago.
  7. I completely agree on Urias. He hasn’t fully gotten results yet, but his xwOBA (.357), hard hit % (45.7%), and barrel rate (11.2%) are by far the highest of his short career (his barrel percentage last season was 1.3%). Those numbers all rank as above average among major league hitters. Last year his early results looked okay, but they were inflated by a high BABIP. This year it’s the exact opposite as he’s making much better contact, but has just a .212 BABIP. I think it’s reasonable to believe he’s someone that should run a BABIP closer to .300 over the course of a full season.
  8. Today’s game is a counter to the question, "What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?" Daniel Castano’s strikeout rate in 2021: 5.0% Brewers hitters strikeout rate in 2021: 28.7% So lets play a guessing game, how many strikeouts do you think Castano records against the Brewers this evening?

  10. That was heading into the night. With their 8-for-31 hitting performance tonight they actually raised their season batting average to .211. Progress!... although still last in the NL. Ahead of the Indians, Yankees, and Tigers though, which seems surprising considering those teams have the DH in place of pitchers hitting. There are 8 MLB teams with a worse BABIP than the Brewers, unfortunately the Brewers are second worst in baseball in strikeout rate (now nearly 29% for the season) behind only the Tigers.
  11. Barring a Reds victory in Chavez Ravine, the Pirates might end up with the best night among the NL Central.
  12. Kolten Wong on quite the hot streak over the past four games, but it seems like a lot of it has gone to waste.
  13. Without Hiura doing anything it really leaves them in a bad spot not having any impact RH bats. I like their strategy of being able to load up against RHPs since the NL Central has so few LHPs, but it certainly leaves you susceptible on nights like tonight. I know there aren’t many of them in general across baseball, but for as much as they like playing the matchups/platoon splits I’m surprised they don’t have any competent switch-hitters. They do have some at their lower levels now, however. This is the extreme example, but can you imagine what an impact switch-hitter like Jose Ramirez would do for this roster.
  14. My “positive” takeaway tonight is that Tyrone Taylor continues to look like he belongs and is getting a chance in CF tonight after only getting 35 innings there last season (while Garcia played 350 innings in CF last year). It’s also sort of amazing that this is only Taylor’s second start of the season, but he’s batted 3rd and now 2nd in those two games.
  15. What’s the major league record for double plays against one team in a game?
  16. That DP is a killer. It looked like Rogers was well on his way to a 20+ pitch inning and a prime opportunity to get to him early. As it stands he gets through the inning with just 16 pitches.
  17. That’s three games in a row where the first two batters of the game reached base for the Brewers.
  18. For how thin that lip is it’s sort of amazing it took such a large, sideways bounce.
  19. What the heck happened on that Chisholm chopper? Holy cow, I’ve never seen that sort of bounce on a major league infield. [sarcasm]Whatever substance is being put on the ball backfired there.[/sarcasm]
  20. Zach Davies gave up 4 runs on 4 hits in the 1st inning tonight. One of the underrated benefits of the Brewers-Padres swap might end up being Davies being swapped with Darvish within the division.
  21. Rockies GM Jeff Bridich has resigned according to Jeff Passan. Bridich is originally from Whitefish Bay (Marquette HS). The Brewers haven’t made a trade with the Rockies since 2004, hopefully this increases the likelihood of one happening down the road. Edit: Statement from the Rockies...
  22. Sure, but this is the one thread where we dream upon an eternal hot streak.
  23. Per Jon Morosi... News: Brewers are optimistic Christian Yelich could return to game action before the week is over, after the recent MRI of Yelich's back yielded no revelatory findings.
  24. After facing 21 straight right-handed starting pitchers to begin the season the Brewers finally draw a left-handed starter. Unfortunately Trevor Rogers, the 13th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft out of high school, is a pretty good one. It’ll be interesting to see what lineup they go with today, they are also set to face another Marlins southpaw tomorrow (Daniel Castano).
