  2. Another good Burnes article for those with a Baseball Prospectus subscription, Corbin Burnes is Cutting Gems
  3. Drew Pomeranz (w/ Ray Black), Xavier Cedeno, and Jeremy Jeffress are some other relievers they’ve acquired in-season during the Stearns tenure.
  4. With the Reds loss today, the Brewers are now the only team in the NL Central currently with a winning record. A few more notes about this Reds-Dbacks season series: The Dbacks won five of six games against the Reds. Three of the games went to extra innings including the Reds only win which was the first game of the season series. The Reds hit 6 home runs today and still lost 14-11 in 10 innings. The Dbacks scored 47 runs in the six games (an average of nearly 8 runs per game).
  5. Reds fans are currently in complete meltdown mode over their pitching imploding for a third consecutive game. Just caught a glimpse of Derek Johnson making a mound visit during the 7th inning, and it reminded me that his exit didn’t exactly prove to be the death knell many expected. Don’t get me wrong, I like DJ and think he did a great job, but it’s nice to see the organization’s pitching development probably supersedes the impact of any one individual.
  6. Not having those big bats and gloves in the lineups in SD makes this sweep even better. One random thought I had after the sweep was regarding former FanGraphs managing editor Dave Cameron who joined the Padres front office a little over three years ago. Cameron use to pin the Brewers as his quintessential example of “Stars and Scrubs” roster construction. Beyond the obvious that it’s mildly ironic the Brewers just swept the Padres without some of their “stars,” I do think it’s a testament to the front office that they’ve seemingly raised the floor a bit on the middle-to-lower tier players on 40-man roster. You can only gain so much insight from a few games, but it seems like over most of the past decade losing three starting position players that were all hitting in the top half of the lineup would’ve decimated the Brewers chances of winning games. Certainly it also doesn’t hurt when your starting pitching is providing an otherworldly performance.
  7. We’re coming up on just 10% of the season being completed, but the Brewers FanGraphs playoff odds have already increased significantly. Everyone else in the NL Central is now below 25%.
  8. The Reds entered the 9th inning up 3-0. The game is now in the 10th inning and they are down 8-3. They also had the would be game winning run thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the 9th.
  9. The Brewers have the third best run differential in baseball (+24) behind only the Dodgers (+38) and Red Sox (+27).
  10. I loved when they did it to start the 2018 season (with Yelich and Cain making their Brewers debuts), but this one might be even sweeter considering the quality of competition.
  11. I'd rather keep the winning run on the on-deck circle. Yeah, that’s a good point as well. In a bit of trouble now.
  12. Boxberger looks like he’s completely lost his release point. He looks like toast.
  13. I want to be wrong about Boxberger, but I’m skeptical he’s going to find that David Phelps magic this year.
  14. Walks have been the biggest issue for the bullpen so far this season, IMO. Have been better this series, but tough no out walk here.
  15. Narvaez has the early lead towards being the Brewers most valuable offensive/position player this season, and it’s not particularly close at the moment.
  16. Does anyone know the stat with Suter and inherited runners this year? I know it isn’t good, but I couldn’t remember exactly what it’s been so far.
  17. With the off day tomorrow I wouldn’t have hated pulling Houser before facing the top of the order a third time.
  18. Houser threw three pitches to Grisham. Two of them were high hanging curveballs.
  19. According to Padres beat writer Kevin Acee: Dinelson Lamet left the game with right forearm tightness.
  20. That inning could’ve certainly been a lot worse. Watching Woodruff and Burnes starts preceding Houser is a pretty stark contrast.
  21. I don’t think they’d have thrown Stammen for 21 pitches in a blowout last night if they were planning on using him by the 3rd inning today.
  22. Lamet’s apparently coming out of the game. He’d only thrown 29 pitches. He reportedly threw 70+ pitches in his last simulated start, so I’d assume something went wrong.
  23. Both Vogelbach and Garcia took big swings at low sliders that weren’t even close. Not a great sign.
