  1. The Brewers signed 31 year old right handed relief pitcher Erik Davis to a minor league contract with an MLB Spring Training invite. From Adam McCalvy, Brewers sign righty Davis to Minors deal.
  2. I think catcher is a position that gets vastly underrated in terms of its importance, and Realmuto is the player who is probably the most underrated player at the catcher position. Adding Realmuto would instantly give the Brewers an advantage over 90% of the league at the catcher position. In terms of roster construction, having an elite catcher is a significant upgrade because the supply of them is so scarce. The flip side is that the risk of injury and "wear and tear" for a catcher is probably the highest among any position players. In the case of Realmuto he is good both defensively and offensively, and according to Statcast is one of the fastest players in baseball (and the fastest catcher by a long shot). He would a very nice addition for the next three years if the cost in prospects was reasonable.
  3. Catcher J.T. Realmuto has requested a trade from the Marlins (Link). Three years of team control for one of the best catchers in baseball. I hope the Brewers strongly consider making the Marlins an offer for him.
  4. Just a friendly reminder in the spirit of examining these teams as potential trade partners, it was seven years ago today that word leaked that the Brewers were acquiring Zack Greinke and Yuniesky Betancourt (and $2 million dollars) from the Royals in exchange for Alcides Escobar, Lorenzo Cain, Jeremy Jeffress, and Jake Odorizzi. The trade was officially announced the following day. If the teams match up on a present day trade I do think the Brewers could acquire Duffy and Merrifield without giving up Lewis Brinson or Brandon Woodruff. I think the Royals asking price would still be plenty steep, something possibly along the lines of Keston Hiura, Monte Harrison, Isan Diaz, either Luis Ortiz or Corbin Burnes, and an additional prospect a little further down the Brewers prospect list. Both Royals players have plenty of control remaining, 4 years for Duffy and 5 years for Merrifield. I personally would shy away from giving up this many current assets for the two players. If making a deal with the Royals, I would prefer to trade for Duffy alone at a lower cost, and go a different direction than acquiring Merrifield.
  5. Brewers have signed LHP Mike Zagurski to a minor league contract per Jerry Crasnick via Twitter...
  6. I wish I would have bought one of those Gallardo jerseys on discount 3 years ago.
  7. According to Jon Heyman it is a major league deal (Link).
  8. [sarcasm]Now trade for Greinke and Estrada to get the band back together?[/sarcasm]
  9. Per Ken Rosenthal (Tweet Link)... “Source: Free-agent RHP Yovani Gallardo in agreement with #Brewers. Gallardo was Brewers’ second-round pick in 2004, pitched for MIL from ‘07 to ‘13. #Mariners declined his $13M option. Combined ERA past two seasons: 5.57.”

  11. Per the Brewers Player Development Twitter account...
  12. I would be on board with the Tony Watson idea. Siegrist and Duensing seem like interesting options to take a chance on. One other free agent left handed bullpen arm I have seen mentioned this off-season is Boone Logan, but he has been dealing with a nagging back injury so that would be more of a flyer option as well.
  13. An article from Blue Jays reporter Shi Davidi, MLB off-season just getting started after quiet winter meetings, includes these couple of passage...
  14. A little closer to getting back on topic... I want to see a baseball transaction as much as anyone, but the one thing I remain confident in is that any moves David Stearns (and staff) make will have been fully vetted with the risks being calculated and weighed against the long-term viability of the organization. I think he will remain committed to building something that can be sustained over a long period. That may not put the team in the headlines with a big splash very often, but it is a philosophy and focus on organization building from the bottom up that many of us have wanted to see for a long time.
  15. Not to mention some of their staff have turned down past opportunities to work for front offices. The Fangraphs “clowns” staff don’t claim to have access to more data points and analytical ammunition than the organizations do. In fact on several occasions Dave Cameron has referenced how much they don’t have access to in comparison to teams. What exactly are we arguing against here? They have a bunch of savvy baseball minds that help drive good content and thought provoking dialogue. None of it is bullet proof and certainly some features are more proven than others, and they would be the first to admit that. So while they may fall short of the resources that the teams are privy to, how does striving to develop a repository of baseball data and analytics that fans are able to access qualify them as “one of the worst things to come to the world of baseball fans?” How exactly would fans be better off without Fangraphs? If anyone is taking their projections or analysis as gospel then that is on them, not Fangraphs.
  16. A couple of individuals that write about the team speculate that Missouri native Monte Harrison would be an attractive piece for the Royals...
  17. viewtopic.php?f=66&t=36142 I think he actually is looking for this one: Royals Trading Partners? - Danny Duffy, Whit Merrifield Merged the two threads discussing Danny Duffy and Whit Merrifield into one thread.
  18. Villar was good for 5 months in 2016. The rest of his career his numbers don't justify his being a regular on a contender. He's got some power, but not enough to justify his high strikeout rate, and his getting on base is part function of his inability to put the ball in play, not because he's got a high degree of patience or great eye at the plate. Throw in his sub-par defense and lapses on the basepaths, and again he wouldn't be in my lineup. I'd take Merrifield in a heartbeat solely on defense and ability to make contact. Plus he can steal a base too and had 19 HR last year. Merrifield was almost a 4 WAR player in 2017 compared to Villar's 0.1 per B-R. A complete no-brainer. Ken Rosenthal reported that the Brewers have been linked to Whit Merrifield. It would be a gamble in the sense there is the possibility they would be acquiring him at his absolute peak value. I do like the concept of targeting players with a low strike out rate that play above average defense, but worry Merrifield would be a prime candidate to regress for anyone expecting him to be a 3-4 win player moving forward.
  19. From Jeff Passan, Recent physical shows Angels' Shohei Ohtani has a damaged elbow ligament Some more information in the article linked above. Not necessarily devastating news, but reason for some concern.
  20. Per MLB Trade Rumors regarding talks between the Brewers and Pirates... There has been some previous discussion on this board about Josh Harrison, but the idea of the Brewers targeting Gerrit Cole is an interesting one. Cole is under team control for the next two seasons. The only confirmation at this point is the teams are talking with one another, who they are discussing is obviously just speculation on the part of Haudricourt.
  21. I didn’t get a lot of support on this in previous posts, but I think Carlos Santana makes sense for the Brewers. Would have to juggle trying to get some value for Thames while simultaneously signing Santana. I think Santana will prove to be a more valuable player over the next few years, but it would obviously be a greater financial commitment. Highly recommend reading Dave Cameron’s Fangraphs piece, The 2018 Free Agent Bargins, where he ranks Santana has his top bargain among 2018 Free Agents (last offseason Justin Turner was Cameron’s top free agent bargain in the same article).
  22. From the Haudricourt article today, Brewers receiving interest in Domingo Santana on trade market but would ask for big return... So how about Domingo Santana for A’s LHP Sean Manaea?
  23. Nice deal for Neshek. I wasn't sure he would get that much. It shows you the relief market is going to be expensive this year. Let me preface with the fact that admittedly this is a very strange statement. Neshek and I were both born in Madison just a couple of days apart. In a really weird way seeing him sign a significant contract affirms that I am not completely over the hill in baseball years just yet.
  24. Not an exact science, but one approach you can use to determine a player's Surplus Value is using the Google Doc spreadsheet found at this link: Evaluating Trade Rumors: MLB surplus value calculator for 2018. I added Thames salary over each of the next three years (including the team option year) and projected his next three seasons at 2.0 WAR, 1.5 WAR, and 1.0 WAR. That led to a total Discounted Surplus Value of $31 million remaining with his current contract. Assuming he performs closer to his current projections for 2018 and loses half a win each year (1.5 WAR, 1.0 WAR, 0.5 WAR) the Discounted Surplus Value drops in half to about $15 million. Obviously that is some rough math, but the contract helps maintain good value even at modest future projections.
