  1. Rizzo finished with 3.0 IP, 0 H, and 3 K's. This guy might be better then Sidd Finch.
  2. I have a confession to make... I really look forward to the Futures Game each year. Given the choice, I would rather attend the Futures Game than the MLB All Star Game. In fact I still have last year's game on the DVR and rewatched it this winter when I was missing baseball. I can't wait for this year's edition. I also have a feeling that in addition to Jimmy Nelson there is a future Brewer on those rosters somewhere.

  5. FINAL: Brevard County 3, Dunedin 1 'Tees sweep Jays with Tuesday matinee win Brevard allows seven walks, but two-hits Dunedin in 3-1 victory By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/2/6/44496526/cuts/Pierce_4.7_huf9b9xl_7nrh2q0d.JPG Manatees pitcher Chad Pierce, improved to 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA out of the bullpen, as he allowed just one hit in four innings of relief in Brevard County's 3-1 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - An early morning wake-up call was no problem for the Brevard County Manatees as they completed a three-game sweep of the Dunedin Blue Jays with a 3-1 win on Tuesday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium. A combined 12 walks in the game forced a slow pace to start, but the free passes proved to be important to both teams as three of the four runners who scored in the game were put on by walks. Oliver Dominguez scored the first run of the game in the second inning, and the only one for Dunedin, as he reached on a walk and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Derrick Chung came through with an RBI single to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead that lasted until the bottom of the third. Brandon Macias led off the third with a base hit, with a wild pitch giving him second base. Consecutive one-out walks to Yadiel Rivera and Mitch Haniger respectively, loaded the bases for Greg Hopkins to single in the tying run. Cody Hawn then drew a bases loaded walk to give the Manatees (4-2 second half, 41-32 overall) a 2-1 lead. Both Macias and Hopkins had two hits each. Brevard County tacked on another run in the seventh, when Yadiel Rivera doubled to drive home Chadwin Stang, who had reached on a free pass. Rivera has now hit safely in his last seven games at a .522 clip (12-for-23) with five runs scored, five runs batted in, one home run and three doubles. He has struck out just twice in that stretch and has drawn a walk in three straight contests for just the second time in his professional career. The shortstop also took five walks in a four-day span from July 15-18, 2011 with Helena. Cody Scarpetta (0-2, 5.93) turned in arguably the best start of his young season thus far, with the only knock against him being his four walks. Dunedin (1-5, 38-34) could only scrape up one run with one hit against the righty, with Scarpetta sitting three of his opponents down on strikes. Chad Pierce earned the win in relief of Scarpetta. Pierce hurled four scoreless frames, while allowing one base hit and three walks to go along with three strikeouts before Tommy Toledo's perfect ninth inning earned him his 13th save. Dunedin starting pitcher Casey Lawrence left the game with an apparent injury after amassing a full count on Nick Ramirez to lead off the second inning. Blue Jays' reliever Marco Grifantini was hung with the loss, despite surrendering just two runs in five unexpected relief innings. Brevard County will open a six-game road trip with a three-game set against the Clearwater Threshers (2-2, 37-35), beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night at Bright House Field. Jacob Barnes (5-2, 3.57) will take the mound for the Manatees. 6. FINAL: Brevard County 4, Dunedin 3 'Tees edge Dunedin, 4-3 Magnifico earns no-decision in Brevard debut By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/8/8/51665788/cuts/Magnifico_6.24_1_efqy3w98_ch3bu8ad.JPG Manatees starting pitcher Damien Magnifico allowed three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work in his Brevard County debut on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera against the Dunedin Blue Jays. Magnifico did not factor in the decision as the Manatees defeated the Blue Jays, 4-3. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Two runs in the first inning made it look like it would be another offensive showing for the Brevard County Manatees on Monday night, but things slowed down and ended in a 4-3 win for the 'Tees over the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium. In that first inning, Yadiel Rivera doubled with one out to get things started and then Mitch Haniger followed with a triple to bring Rivera home. Haniger then scored on a Nick Ramirez ground out. Another run was added in the third to make it 3-0 in favor of the Manatees (3-2 second half, 40-32 overall), when Cody Hawn drew a two-out walk, stole his second base of the year and scored on a Greg Hopkins RBI single. Things started to turn in the top of the fourth, when Brevard County starting pitcher Damien Magnifico (0-0, 7.36) retired the first batter before allowing a single to Gabe Jacobo. Consecutive wild pitches from Magnifico allowed Jacobo to reach third and he eventually scored when K.C. Hobson grounded out to second. Two straight singles and a walk loaded the bases, ending Magnifico's Manatees' debut with two outs in the frame. Mark Williams came on and issued back-to-back walks to force in a pair of runs and tie up the contest at 3-3. Magnifico was charged with all three Blue Jays' (1-4, 38-33) runs in 3.2 innings, as he scattered five hits and walked two with a pair of strikeouts. Williams, Stephen Peterson and Tommy Toledo combined to hurl four perfect innings after the game was tied, with Williams eventually picking up the win and Toledo earning his 12th save. Ramirez became the hero with a no-doubt home run, his 16th of the year, to lead off the bottom of the fifth and give Brevard a 4-3 advantage that they would not relinquish. For Dunedin, All-Star starting pitcher Scott Copeland took the hit for the loss with the 'Tees scoring all four of their runs in his five innings of work. It took seven hits and two walks drawn by Brevard County to put those runs on the board, with Copeland recording only one strikeout on the night. Brevard County will go for the three-game sweep of Dunedin on Tuesday in a 10:35 AM (9:35 Central) matinee game. Cody Scarpetta (0-2, 7.45) will get the start for the Manatees, with Casey Lawrence (4-6, 4.16) taking the hill for the Blue Jays. Brevard County Box Score BC Hitters T.J. 7. FINAL: Brevard County 12, Dunedin 1 Manatees blow out Blue Jays, 12-1 Brevard benefits from four Dunedin errors in rout By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/4/0/51605140/cuts/Suter_6.23_1_4avwyo9l_jkxa2bfz.JPG Manatees starting pitcher Brent Suter allowed just one run in six innings as Brevard County blasted the Dunedin Blue Jays, 12-1 on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)) AUDIO: Game Highlights VIERA, Fla. - Two runs would have been enough for a win, but the Brevard County Manatees' offense put up an extra ten in a 12-1 win over Florida State League North Division first half champion Dunedin Blue Jays to open a three-game series on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium. Brevard County (2-2 second half, 39-32 overall) southpaw Brent Suter (6-4, 3.15) stifled the Blue Jays (1-3, 38-32) to the tune of one run that came on a single swing of the bat. K.C. Hobson's second inning homer was the first run of the game and one of just three hits for Dunedin. Hobson finished with two of those three hits, with Suter allowing all three in his six innings of work with six strikeouts - three of which came in a twelve pitch sixth - and two walks. Brevard County answered back with three runs in the bottom of the second, with a Ben McMahan RBI single scoring Nick Ramirez before Rafael Neda drove in both Greg Hopkins and McMahan. Neda went 3-for-4 with two RBI and had his first three-hit game since August 15, 2012 with Class-A Wisconsin. Yadiel Rivera's second long ball of the season led off the third inning, giving the Manatees a 4-1 lead. In the fifth, the Manatees took advantage of three errors committed by Dunedin to score four unearned runs and extend the lead to 8-1. After Ramirez drew a one-out walk, Hopkins hit a dead double play ball that snuck through the legs of third baseman Gustavo Pierre to put runners on first and second. Cody Hawn followed with a grounder that the first baseman Hobson made a diving stop on, he then elected to shovel the ball to second with no coverage at first base. His toss escaped the glove of Peter Mooney, the shortstop covering the bag, dribbling into left field where he went back and picked it up as Ramirez scored. He threw over to third base, where Hopkins was attempting to advance to and threw the ball away from Pierre for the second error on the play. Hawn also advanced to second. Without the errors on the play, the three-run homer that followed by McMahan likely would have been a grand slam, with all four runs being unearned either way. McMahan went 4-for-5 on the night with a career-high four RBI and two runs scored. It was the third four-hit game in McMahan's career and first since May 9, 2012 with Wisconsin. Ramirez did notch a grand slam for the 'Tees in the sixth inning, the second salami of the year for the Manatees to make it a 12-1 rout. Hopkins notched the other one all the way back on April 10 at Lakeland. Tyler Cravy and Andre Lamontagne combine to hold the Blue Jays hitless and scoreless through the final three frames. Dunedin starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx was tagged with the loss, as he was charged with eight runs even though just four were earned in his five innings on the bump. He yielded nine hits and just one walk with three strikeouts. Damien Magnifico, who was recently promoted to Brevard County from Wisconsin, will get his first start with the Manatees on Monday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. His counterpart from Dunedin will be Florida State League All-Star Scott Copeland (6-2, 2.49). 9. FINAL: Tampa 4, Brevard County 1 Manatees slammed in rain-shortened game Brevard falls to Tampa, 4-1 on first inning grand slam By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/4/6/51495946/cuts/Ramirez_4.14_3_k0xpstsd_bs5zdzi9.JPG Manatees designated hitter Nick Ramirez, seen here in a game from earlier this season, had the only RBI in Brevard County's 4-1 loss in a rain-shortened, five inning game to the Tampa Yankees on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) TAMPA, Fla. - One pitch ultimately did the Brevard County Manatees in on Saturday night as they fell 4-1 to the Tampa Yankees in a rain-shortened, five inning game at George M. Steinbrenner Field. In the bottom of the first inning with two outs and the bases loaded, Tampa's Peter O'Brien took the 1-2 offering from Brevard County (1-2 second half, 38-32 overall) starting pitcher Jed Bradley and deposited it over the right field wall for a grand slam. It was the first grand slam home run that the Manatees have allowed this year and the first since July 29, 2012. Bradley (4-3, 4.21) was saddled with his first loss since May 23 as he allowed the four runs on four hits, while walking four and striking out three in 4.1 innings of work. The Yankees (2-1, 30-41) had one on with one out against Bradley and the 'Tees in the bottom of the fifth before the tarp was put on the field and then eventually the game was called. Brevard County struck first in the top of the first as a two-out single from Nick Ramirez brought home Greg Hopkins, who also singled, to give the Manatees a 1-0 lead. Yadiel Rivera had his second straight multi-hit night as he went 2-for-2 with a double. Rivera is hitting .412 (7-for-17) in his last five games. The Manatees return home to Space Coast Stadium to begin a three-game set on Sunday at 5:05 PM (4:05 Central), with the FSL North Division first half champion Dunedin Blue Jays (1-2, 38-31). Lefty Brent Suter (5-4, 3.33) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. He is 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA in two starts against Dunedin so far this season. The Blue Jays will send Austin Bibens-Dirkx (3-2, 2.98) to mound. In his only start against the Manatees back on May 17, he threw seven shutout innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out ten. 10. FINAL: Brevard County 7, Tampa 5 'Tees hold on to top Tampa, 7-5 Barnes earns win as Rivera drives in three By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/5/4/51404754/cuts/Rivera_5.21_7mj7opc9_ngy3h2ac.JPG Manatees shortstop Yadiel Rivera, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 3-for-4 with three RBI in Brevard County's 7-5 win over the Tampa Yankees on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. Rivera is hitting .291 (16-for-55) in the month of June. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)[/i][/size] TAMPA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees held a 7-2 lead after seven innings but had to hold on to defeat the Tampa Yankees, 7-5 on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Matt Miller entered the game for the 'Tees (1-1 second half, 38-31 overall) to start the bottom of the eighth and proceded to allow a single to Mason Williams and then walked Robert Refsnyder. Ben Gamel then stepped up and would make Miller and Manatees pay as he homered to right to make it just a two-run game. Tommy Toledo was then brought in for a six-out save and was able to retire Tampa (1-1, 29-41) in order to finish out the eighth. After allowing a lead-off double to Saxon Butler in the bottom of the ninth, Toledo retired the side yet again to earn his 11th save of the season. For Toledo, it was his fourth save of 2013 in which he was asked to get more than three outs. He has also a perfect 6-for-6 in save opportunities on the road with a 0.77 ERA in nine appearances overall away from home. With the game remaining scoreless through three innings, the Manatees got on the board first against Tampa's southpaw starter Dietrich Enns in the top of the fourth. Greg Hopkins led the frame off with a walk and then Mitch Haniger followed with a single. Hopkins and Haniger would each move up 90 feet on a passed ball by catcher Gary Sanchez to put runners on second and third with no outs. After Nick Ramirez struck out, Ben McMahan would bring Hopkins home on a RBI groundout to third that also moved Haniger to third. Yadiel Rivera then stepped up and delivered a two-out RBI single to right to make it a 2-0 game. Brevard County roughed up the first reliever out of the Yankees' bullpen in the sixth as Diego Moreno came in for Enns. Hopkins led off the inning with a single and then Haniger was hit by a pitch. Two batters later with one out, McMahan singled to center to bring home Hopkins and make it 3-0. McMahan was 2-for-4 on the game and drove in two runs. Then with Rivera at the plate, a wild pitch by Moreno moved McMahan and Haniger to second and third, respectively. Rivera would then connect with his second RBI single of the game as he drove one up the middle to bring both men home, to give Brevard County a 5-0 lead. Rivera led the way at the plate for the Manatees as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI. He is hitting .291 (16-for-55) in the month of June. The Manatees provided plenty of run support for starting pitcher Jacob Barnes (5-2, 3.57) who went a season-high six innings. Barnes yielded seven hits and two runs - both in the sixth inning - that allowed Tampa to cut the lead to 5-2. Barnes recorded just two strikeouts but did not walk a batter for the first time since May 16 against St. Lucie. It was his first win in a start since April 18 versus Clearwater. Brevard County picked up two insurance runs in the seventh that proved to be beneficial as Greg Hopkins launched a two-run homer to left. Hopkins was 2-for-4 on the night with three runs scored and homered for the second time in his last four games after having just two all season before that. The rubber match of the three-game set between Brevard County and Tampa will be Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. The Manatees will send lefty Jed Bradley (4-2, 3.94) to the mound as he looks to build on his stellar June, in which he has gone 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three starts. Bryan Mitchell (3-7, 4.74) will get the call for the Yankees. Mitchell has pitched much better at home with a 2-1 record with a 2.91 ERA in six appearances, compared to a road mark of 1-6 with a 6.21 ERA in eight appearances. 11. FINAL: Tampa 3, Brevard County 2 Brevard edged by Tampa to open second half Manatees fall 3-2 to Yankees, just seventh one-run loss in 2013 By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/9/0/51298090/cuts/Roenicke_5.20_v638e90p_wyodls10.JPG Manatees right fielder Lance Roenicke, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-4 in Brevard County's 3-2 loss to the Tampa Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Thursday night. In eight games thus far in June, Roenicke is hitting .444 (12-for-27). (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) TAMPA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees started the second half of the season off on the wrong foot with a 3-2 loss to the Tampa Yankees on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. For the Manatees (0-1 second half, 37-31 overall), it was just their seventh loss in one-run games, compared to 19 victories in one-run contests. Brevard County jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Tampa (1-0, 29-40) starting pitcher Michael Pineda, who was in town on a Major League rehab assignment. Three straight singles by T.J. Mittelstaedt, Yadiel Rivera and Mitch Haniger to begin the game put the 'Tees on the board as Haniger's single plated Mittelstaedt. The Manatees would leave two on in the first but were able to plate another run against Pineda and the Yankees in the second with two outs. Brandon Macias started the rally with a single and that was followed by a walk from Mittelstaedt. Rivera would then reach first on an error by Yankees' third baseman Anderson Feliz that scored Macias to make it 2-0 in favor of Brevard County. Tampa was able to get on the board against the Manatees and starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta (0-2, 7.45) with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. A solo homer off the bat of Yeral Sanchez cut the lead in half and after the next batter, Anderson Feliz drew a walk, Scarpetta's night was done. Scarpetta, who went 3.2 innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on three hits. He walked two and struck out three in his third start of the season after coming off of Tommy John surgery last year. Chad Pierce came in for Scarpetta and preceded to walk Angelo Gumbs and then yielded a ground-rule double to Saxon Butler that plated Feliz and tied the game. The Yankees led off the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles off of Pierce from Mason Williams and Robert Refsnyder to put runners at corners with no outs. Refsnyder would be thrown out by catcher Rafael Neda trying to swipe second, but Ben Gamel drew a walk to make it first and third once again. Gamel then tried to steal second and he was successful and the second baseman Mittelstaedt - who was playing second for just the second time this season - was unable to catch the ball cleanly. This allowed Williams to score from third to give Tampa the lead. After Pineda exited the game following four innings of work, Brevard County was unable to touch Tampa's bullpen as the Yankees' relievers combine to strikeout six Manatee hitters in five innings. Following Pierce's exit from the game after 2.1 innings, Mark Williams was able to keep Brevard in the game with two scoreless innings. In the top of the ninth, the 'Tees had a chance to tie the game with a runner on third with no outs. Ben McMahan, the runner on third, would be out at home on a Neda fielder's choice for the first out. Then with Macias at the plate and Neda on first and Lance Roenicke on second, Roenicke was picked off the bag by Tampa catcher Gary Sanchez. Macias would then strike out swinging to end the game. Roenicke was the only Manatee with a multi-hit night as he went 2-for-4. In eight games thus far in June, Roenicke is hitting .444 (12-for-27). Brevard County and Tampa will continue their three-game series on Friday night at 7:00 PM in Tampa (6:00 Central). Jacob Barnes (4-2, 3.67) will toe the rubber for the Manatees as he looks to improve on his last three outings, in which he has allowed at least three runs in each of them. The Yankees will counter with southpaw Dietrich Enns (0-0, 0.00) who will be making his Florida State League debut. Enns went 4-1 with a 0.61 ERA in 19 appearances (one start) over 44.1 innings pitched in Class-A Charleston this season. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-by-Play

Mittelstaedt was 2-for-4 with three RBI. AUDIO: Game Highlights AUDIO: Brandon Macias Pre-Game Interview VIERA, Fla. - A three-run first inning was just the beginning of a strong offensive performance for the Brevard County Manatees in an 8-3 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees' (36-30) offense backed up pitchers Hiram Burgos and Brent Suter, who combine for a strong performance on the mound. Burgos, who was making the second start of his Major League rehab assignment, faced the minimum through the first three innings before giving up a pair of runs on four hits in his fourth and final inning. He struck out a total of four batters, including three in that final frame. Suter (5-4, 3.33) took it the rest of the way with five innings of five-hit ball, surrendering only an unearned run to the Flying Tigers (30-37) in the ninth inning with six strikeouts. The duo of did not walk a batter, marking the fifth time this season that Brevard's pitching staff has not surrendered a walk in a game. T.J. Mittelstaedt led off the bottom of the first with a home run off of Jeff Ferrell that would spark the offense for the Manatees. Mittelstaedt's homer was followed by a Greg Hopkins single, a Mitch Haniger double to plate Hopkins and then a single from Nick Ramirez to bring in Haniger that made it 3-0. Brevard County scored an unearned run in the third after Hopkins reached on an error, stole second base and then came home three batters later on a single from Cameron Garfield. Garfield drove in two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, knocking in both Haniger and Ramirez after Chadwin Stang had scored on a sacrifice fly from Mittelstaedt. Mittelstaedt also put up his third RBI of the night in the eighth inning, with a two-out single that drove in Brandon Macias. With the Dunedin Blue Jays' extra-innings win over the Tampa Yankees on Tuesday night, the Manatees remain one-half game back of first place with one game to go in the first half. Brevard County will know its fate before they take the field on Wednesday night as Dunedin and Tampa will face-off at 11:00 a.m. If the Blue Jays defeat the Yankees, Dunedin will clinch the first half title for the Florida State League North Division. Should Dunedin lose to Tampa, the Manatees would be able to claim the playoff berth with a win over Lakeland on Wednesday night, beginning at 6:35 p.m. Brevard County will send All-Star David Goforth to the hill, while the Flying Tigers will counter with Hudson Randall (1-5, 4.58). (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO HIGHLIGHTS VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees earned their sixth walk-off win of the season on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium as they topped the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 3-2. This time it was on a strange single and an error with two outs in the ninth inning. Brandon Macias became the hero with a soft chopper to the left side of the infield, forcing both the shortstop Brandon Loy and third baseman Francisco Martinez to charge in to try and make the play. Both collided and missed the ball, allowing runners to score from second and third on the error charged to Loy and give Brevard County (35-30) the win over Lakeland (30-36). After Cameron Garfield's infield single and Cody Hawn's bloop single in left center to start the ninth, Yadiel Rivera grounded out to the pitcher and advanced both runners. Garfield had been immediately replaced by Ben McMahan on the base paths, while Hawn was lifted for Lance Roenicke to run once he reached second. It was the third of Brevard's six walk-offs in which a pinch runner scored the winning run. Other such instances included on April 16 against the Flying Tigers, when Adrian Williams advanced from first to third on a pair of passed balls then scored on a wild pitch and on May 31 when T.J. Mittelstaedt scored on a double by Rivera against the Daytona Cubs. Greg Hopkins led off the sixth inning with a solo homer, his third of the year, to cut what was then a 2-0 deficit to Lakeland in half. Hopkins, along with Hawn, each recorded two hits for the 'Tees. Brevard County starting pitcher Jed Bradley (4-2, 3.94) was charged with two runs in the third inning, though just one was earned. The southpaw left after seven innings as he surrendered seven hits with only one walk and three strikeouts. Bradley recorded 14 groundball outs on the night and had his fourth consecutive quality start. Earning the win in relief was Stephen Peterson as he fanned two with two hits allowed in as many innings, while Lakeland's All-Star closer Melvin Mercedes (3-1) was hit with the loss on three hits for two runs, one earned. For Lakeland, Wilsen Palacios left the game in line for the victory but took a no-decision despite holding the Manatees to just one run on five hits and a walk, while striking out seven in seven innings. With the Dunedin Blue Jays topping the Tampa Yankees on Monday night, the Manatees remain one-half game out of first place with two games to go in the first half. With the Blue Jays in Tampa tomorrow, the Manatees will once again host the Flying Tigers on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. It was announced late Monday that the Major League rehab assignment of right-handed pitcher Hiram Burgos was transferred from Class-A Wisconsin to Brevard County and that Burgos will start for the Manatees on Tuesday. 17. FINAL: FSL South 8, FSL North 1 Hanson homers, named All-Star MVP Pirates prospect hits three-run blast to cap five-run fifth inning By Jake Seiner / Special to MLB.com http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/8/0/50778580/cuts/480_Hanson_ASG_Mark_LoMoglio_upn7xd2n_vvbpqvcn.jpg Alen Hanson acknowledges the crowd after earning All-Star MVP honors. It's been a long three months for Alen Hanson. And that made his Saturday night all the sweeter. The Pirates' No. 3 prospect was disappointed after hitting .255 without a homer in April and worked hard to climb out of the hole and emerge as one of the Florida State League's most dynamic players. Hanson culminated that hard work by slugging a three-run homer and earning MVP honors as the South Division cruised past the North, 8-1, at the Florida State League All-Star Game in Dunedin. "It's an honor, especially with the way I started the season," Hanson said through teammate Jonathan Rodriguez, who served as translator. "It wasn't quite the way I was expecting to start, so to get the opportunity to be an All-Star and perform like this is a dream come true for me." Hanson, hitting .282 with a .773 OPS for the season, batted leadoff and went 1-for-5. Rodriguez and Palm Beach teammate Stephen Piscotty -- the Cardinals' No. 15 prospect -- also homered for the South. St. Lucie Mets left fielder Dustin Lawley pitched in with three hits. The North took a 1-0 lead in the third after Yankees top prospect Gary Sanchez doubled and scored on a groundout by John Andreoli of the Daytona Cubs. The South responded with a five-run fifth. Piscotty started it with a solo shot to right-center field, Lawley singled and Rodriguez walked before Curt Casali singled to load the bases. Charlotte Stone Crabs teammate Richie Shaffer lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Lawley with the go-ahead run. Hanson followed with a blast over the right-field fence, and the South never looked back. "Prior to the at-bat, I was thinking that I wanted to help the team out with a sac fly or just put the ball in play and get the run in to tie the game," Hanson said. "After Shaffer got the sac fly, I just went up there looking for a pitch to hit up in the zone. I got it and put good wood on it." Hanson called the experience "one of the best times so far in [my] career," adding it was especially enjoyable to compete with and against players he knew from his days in the Dominican Republic, like Rodriguez, Maikel Franco, Melvin Mercedes and Kennys Vargas. "Actually being able to be at the All-Star Game and to be in the Home Run Derby with guys I know from back home, I enjoyed every moment," Hanson said. "I enjoyed it as much as possible. And to cap it off by having the game that I had at the plate and to win the game, it was fun." Hanson was joined in the Home Run Derby by Lawley and Piscotty, among others. Lawley and Piscotty tied with North Division All-Stars Javier Baez and Nick Ramirez with six homers after the first round. Because Baez and Ramirez had more homers coming into the Derby, they advanced to the finals, while Lawley and Piscotty were eliminated. The South duo got the last laugh, though, with Piscotty going deep and Lawley registering a game-high three hits with two runs scored in four at-bats in Saturday's game. "I'll always remember that," Lawley said of his first professional All-Star Game. "It was cool. It was real laid-back and relaxed and everyone just went out and played like they know how to play. Really just relaxed out there, and it was fun." For the North, Baez -- the Cubs' top prospect who was five days removed from a record-tying four-homer game -- doubled twice, while Sanchez and Carlos Alonso supplied the only other hits. Baez lost to Ramirez in the final of the Home Run Derby. Mets No. 3 prospect Noah Syndergaard picked up the win with a scoreless inning. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO HIGHLIGHTS VIERA, Fla. - Yet another one-run game went the way of the Brevard County Manatees as a 2-1 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium brought the team into the All-Star break just one-half game out of first place in the FSL North Division first half standings. Brevard County (34-30) starting pitcher Chad Pierce (2-2, 4.47) set a new career-high with nine strikeouts in his 5.1 innings of work, even though he left the game in for the loss despite giving up only one run on two hits. Jupiter (33-32) scored that lone run off of Pierce and the 'Tees the fourth inning, as Austin Barnes was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and scored three batters later on a double from Alex Burg. Barnes was able to knock the ball away from catcher Cameron Garfield on a play at the plate to score. The Manatees squeezed out just enough offense in the bottom of the sixth inning to get the job done. Brandon Macias led off the frame by reaching base on a fielding error by Jupiter shortstop Austin Nola. Chadwin Stang then drew a walk to put two on with no outs. T.J. Mittelstaedt's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, with Greg Hopkins following with an RBI groundout to plate Macias and then Mitch Haniger delivered a run-scoring single to give the 'Tees the 2-1 lead. The win went to Mark Williams, who tossed 2.2 scoreless innings out of the Brevard County bullpen, despite a two-base error and a wild pitch that put a runner on third base with nobody out in the eighth. Tommy Toledo picked up his tenth save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth as he stranded two runners on base. Jupiter starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez, who was on a Major League rehab assignment from the Miami Marlins, threw five scoreless frames and allowed four hits with a strikeout, in a no-decision. The Florida State League will convene in Dunedin this Saturday for the 2013 FSL All-Star Game, a contest that will feature Manatees pitcher David Goforth, first baseman Nick Ramirez and catcher Cameron Garfield. Ramirez will also participate in the Home Run Derby prior to Saturday's game. Pitcher Brooks Hall (promotion) and Seth Harvey (injury) were also selected but will not play. Upon returning to action on Monday night at 6:35 p.m., Brevard County will host the Lakeland Flying Tigers for a three-game series to conclude the first half of play. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO HIGHLIGHTS VIERA, Fla. - A fourth-inning sacrifice bunt provided the only run that Brevard County Manatees would ultimately need as they recorded their first shutout since May 9 as they blanked the Jupiter Hammerheads, 2-0 on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. With one out and the bases loaded in the fourth, Chadwin Stang came up and laid a bunt down the first base line. Stang nearly beat it out for a hit, but nevertheless he did his job to bring home Cody Hawn and put the Manatees on the board first. Brevard County (33-30) starting pitcher David Goforth (6-5, 3.07) kept the Hammerheads (33-31) at bay as he threw 6.1 scoreless innings. On the night, the FSL All-Star allowed five hits, while walking three and striking out four. Goforth stranded two Jupiter base runners in each of the first three innings and then faced the minimum number of batters until a one-out error in the seventh. For Goforth, it was his fifth win in his last seven starts and he improved to 4-1 with a 1.62 ERA in seven starts at home this season. After that error and a single, Goforth's night was done and Stephen Peterson came in to get out of the jam as he induced to fly outs to end the inning and leave the two runners on base. Peterson retired two batters in the ninth and allowed a double, before giving way to Tommy Toledo for the four-out save attempt. Toledo struck out Austin Nola swinging to end the top of the eighth and in the bottom of the eighth; Brevard County plated an insurance run as Mitch Haniger led off the inning with a solo home run. Both Haniger and Rafael Neda went 2-for-3 for the 'Tees. After allowing a single to Ryan Goetz to lead off the ninth, Toledo retired the next three in order to earn his ninth save of the season and give the Manatees their fifth shutout victory of 2013. In Brevard County's (32-30) final at-bat, Ben McMahan led off the frame with a single to right and then Yadiel Rivera notched his eighth double of the year to put the tying run in scoring position with no outs. Jupiter (33-30) closer Nick Wittgren was then able to get Lance Roenicke to line out to second for the first out. Wittgren then struck out both Brevard County's leading hitter, Chadwin Stang and the Manatees' hero from Monday night, T.J. Mittelstaedt, to end the game. All of the scoring on the night happened in the first three innings with Jupiter jumping out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning. A trio of two-out singles that ended with a two-RBI hit from Ryan McIntyre got the Hammerheads on the board off of Brevard County starting pitcher Jacob Barnes (4-2, 3.67). Jupiter added another run against Barnes and the 'Tees in the third after Ross Wilson tripled and then scored on a sacrifice fly. Barnes went five frames and did allow only seven base runners. He yielded five hits and a walk, while striking out two. Brevard County got one run back in the bottom of the third and it started with a leadoff walk from Chadwin Stang. Stang then advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw by Jupiter starting pitcher Justin Nicolino. Three batters later, Stang would come in to score with Mitch Haniger getting the first Brevard County hit off of Nicolino to knock the unearned run in. All zeroes followed that half inning on the scoreboard, with the 'Tees getting a total of five more hits the rest of the way. The trio of Tyler Cravy, Stephen Peterson and Mark Williams combine to hold the Hammerheads scoreless for the final four innings but the damage had already been done. The third game of the series between Brevard County and Jupiter is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday night. David Goforth (5-5, 3.36) will take the mound for the Manatees and opposing him will be Jacob Esch (1-3, 3.46) for the Hammerheads. 25. FINAL (10 Inn.): Brevard County 4, Jupiter (Marlins) 2 Mittelstaedt's heroics lead 'Tees past Jupiter Brevard hammers Hammerheads with three homers 4-2 win By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/8/8/50257788/cuts/Mittelstaedt_6.10_l27inr5m_b8f5z34n.JPG Manatees third baseman T.J. Mittelstaedt leaps onto home plate and into a mob of his teammates in celebration as he hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the tenth to give Brevard County a 4-2 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - When given the chance to win a game with a walk-off hit, T.J. Mittelstaedt will take it. At least that's what he has demonstrated this season for the Brevard County Manatees as he hammered a tenth-inning homer to give the 'Tees a 4-2 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads in ten innings on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. It was Mittelstaedt's third walk-off hit of the season for the Manatees (32-29), including a homer against St. Lucie on May 16 and a double against Clearwater on May 25. He also scored the winning run as a pinch runner on May 31 versus Daytona, when Yadiel Rivera brought him home with a double hit in the bottom of the tenth. Mittelstaedt almost didn't have the opportunity to be the hero as Cameron Garfield looked to end the game with blast of his own in the bottom of the ninth. Jupiter (32-30) left fielder Brent Keys had other ideas as he leapt halfway over the wall to retrieve the ball from the visiting bullpen to extend the game. Keys nearly keyed a win for Jupiter as he scored in the first inning and then again in the ninth to tie the game. With two outs in the ninth and Brevard up by one, Austin Nola singled to left and Keys would score from first on a perfectly executed hit and run. Keys just beat out the throw to home from 'Tees right fielder Mitch Haniger to tie the game. Each of Brevard's first two runs also came on homers with Nick Ramirez hitting a solo blast - his 14th of the season - to even the game at 1-1 in the fourth. Lance Roenicke then gave the Manatees their first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth as he launched a solo homer into the visiting bullpen. After allowing one run on four hits in the first, Brevard County starting pitcher Jed Bradley settled in nicely to only allow three more hits and no runs in his next six innings of work. The lefty also struck out four and walked four on the night, but did not factor into the decision. For Bradley, it was his third consecutive quality start as he has a 1.89 ERA over 19 innings in his last three starts. Despite blowing his second save of the season in the ninth, Tommy Toledo earned the win. At the plate, both Roenicke and Chadwin Stang went 2-for-3. In his last ten games, Stang is hitting .407 (11-for-27). Brevard County and Jupiter will take the field again on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. for the second game of their four-game set. The Hammerheads will send reigning Marlins' Minor League Pitcher of the Month Justin Nicolino (2-1, 2.42) to the mound to oppose Brevard County southpaw Jacob Barnes (4-1, 3.38).
