  1. Final: Brevard County 5, Palm Beach 3 Brevard rallies for fifth straight win 'Tees score two in seventh to top Cards, 5-3 By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/2/0/51065120/cuts/Mittelstaedt_6.18_2_sanfg9gu_62kyd5ev.JPG Manatees right fielder T.J. Mittelstaedt, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run in Brevard County's 5-3 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning, en route to their season-high fifth straight win, as they defeated the Palm Beach Cardinals 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game of Sunday's doubleheader was postponed due to rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Monday, beginning at 5:05 p.m. The Manatees (13-8 second half, 50-38 overall) and the Cardinals (13-9, 42-48) will play two seven-inning games. With the score tied 3-3 after six innings and two outs in the top of the seventh, Brandon Macias started the rally as he reached base on a hit by pitch. T.J. Mittelstaedt then stepped up and doubled down the right field line to bring Macias home, as Mittelstaedt advanced to third on the throw in from the outfield. Yadiel Rivera then kept things going as he singled through the right side to plate Mittelstaedt for his first hit of the night. Tyler Cravy, who was in his second inning of relief, pitched around two walks in the bottom of the inning to pick up his third win of the season. The Cardinals scored the first run of the game off of Brevard County starting pitcher Jed Bradley (4-3, 4.30 ERA), who was making his first start since June 22. Anthony Garcia led off the second inning with a single to center and then stole second base. Danny Stienstra would then drive in Garcia with a single to left to make it a 1-0 game, but that would be all that Palm Beach would get in the inning. Brevard County's bats woke up in the top of the fourth when with two outs, Mitch Haniger tripled to right field. Nick Ramirez then followed with his 18th homer of the season to give the 'Tees a 2-1 lead. Ramirez has now driven in a run in his last five games and is now one home run away from tying the Brevard County single-season home run record of 19, set by Hunter Morris in 2011. The Manatees added to their lead in the top of the sixth when Mittelstaedt launched a home run to right to lead off the frame. Mittelstaedt, along with Haniger, went 2-for-4 on the day. Bradley came back out to work the bottom of the sixth but ran into trouble right away as he allowed consecutive doubles to David Popkins and Starlin Rodriguez, with Starlin Rodriguez's double bringing home Popkins and making it a one-run game. Jonathan Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to tie the game and end Bradley's day. Bradley finished by going five-plus innings and allowing three runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out three. Cravy came on and the 'Tees were able to get out of trouble as catcher Rafael Neda picked off Jonathan Rodriguez at first base. He then forced Garcia to fly out to center and Stienstra to pop out to first to end the inning. Brevard County and Palm Beach will close out their four-game series with a doubleheader on Monday that is set to begin at 5:05 p.m. Southpaw Brent Suter (7-5, 3.01) is scheduled to start game one for the Manatees, while the Cardinals will counter with their own lefty Kyle Hald (5-6, 4.89). In game two, Jacob Barnes (6-2, 3.49) is slated to toe the rubber for the 'Tees and another lefty will get the ball for the Cards as Ryan Sherriff (2-2, 4.00) is set to take the mound. 2. Nelson topped out at 96 on the notorious fast ESPN gun and he wasn't exceedingly sharp missing to both sides of the plate. He only hit the glove once and both balls which were put in play were smoked. The first pitch he threw was a line out to Buxton in CF and Owings made a real nice pick on a short hopper which was the 2nd pitch to Lindor. Pitch f/x has Nelson as hitting 96.53 mph, although it looks like the full data for his inning is still incomplete.
  3. Reminder: Futures Game is today at 1:00 PM CT on ESPN2 / MLB.com. John Sickels wrote an article covering seven players that should have been on this year's Futures Game rosters. 5. Final: Memphis 6, Nashville 3 Sounds Fall 6-3 In Extra Innings Laffey Allows One Earned Run In Sounds Debut; Morris Homers Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/6/6/53600466/cuts/712_morris_u96gz3mx_9gynwt0u.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) VIDEO: Hunter Morris Home Run NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds lost 6-3 in extra innings Friday night before 9,644 fans at Greer Stadium, as the Memphis Redbirds' Brock Peterson connected for a bases-clearing single that proved to be the game winner. Tied 3-3 in the top of the 11th inning, Sounds reliever Travis Webb (1-4) loaded the bases with a two outs to set the table for Peterson's drive to centerfield. Webb took the loss, his fourth of the year, allowing three runs in two-innings of work. The Redbirds took their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth inning as Tommy Pham sent one of Michael Olmsted's pitches over the right-field wall. But Nashville answered with an RBI-single from Blake Lalli in the home half of the frame, tying the game at three runs apiece. Lalli's run in the eighth ended Memphis reliever Sam Freeman's consecutive scoreless innings streak at 25 2/3 innings. Nashville scored first in the game on a solo home run from Hunter Morris to lead off the second inning. The hit was the Sounds' first of six hits on the night and Morris' 19th long ball of the season. In the fourth inning, Pham singled through a drawn-in infield to score Brock Peterson from third base to tie the game at 1-1. Peterson reached base on a Josh Prince throwing error, making his run unearned. Left-handed pitcher Aaron Laffey allowed two runs, one earned, in his Sounds debut. The 11-year-pro allowed an RBI-single to Chad Huffman that put the 'Birds up 2-1 in the sixth inning before exiting the game after 5 1/3 innings of work. He walked two and fanned four. The Sounds tied the game in the home half of the sixth inning when Scooter Gennett hit a triple down the right-field line that scored Kentrail Davis. The hit was Gennett's second three-bagger in as many days. Tim Dillard also saw work on the hill, pitching 1 2/3 hitless innings, in which he struck out one. Olmsted finished with one run allowed in two innings of work, before Travis Webb entered in 10th. Picking up the win for Memphis was Nick Greenwood (2-3), who pitched two scoreless frames for the 'Birds before Fernando Salas recorded his third save of the year with a hitless 11th. Nashville surrendered one stolen base in the sixth inning to mark the team's 110 of the season, which matches the team total from 2012. The Sounds will play game three of four against the Redbirds on Saturday night at Greer Stadium. Throwing for Nashville will be RHP Johnnie Lowe (0-1, 4.34) against Memphis' RHP Boone Whiting (4-4, 4.94). 6. Final: Brevard County 10, Palm Beach 8 'Tees hold on to edge Cards, 10-8 By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/4/0/53593240/cuts/Ramirez_6.23_nc5413vf_nzpa89jd.JPG Manatees first baseman Nick Ramirez, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 4-for-5 with three RBI and hit his 17th home run of the year in Brevard County's 10-8 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals on Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees looked like they were on their way to a rout but had to hold on to edge the Palm Beach Cardinals, 10-8 on Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Manatees (12-8 second half, 49-38 overall) enterted the bottom of the ninth with a 10-4 lead as Dan Meadows entered the game. Alex Mejia led off the inning for the Cardinals (13-8, 42-47) and reached on a throwing error by third baseman Brandon Macias. Meadows would then walk the next two batters to load the bases, before striking out David Popkins for the first out of the inning. Meadows then allowed back-to-back walks to Starlin Rodriguez and Jonathan Rodriguez to bring two runs home as Palm Beach cut Brevard's lead to 10-6. Meadows was lifted for Santo Manzanillo, who did not fair much better at first as he too allowed back-to-back, bases loaded walks as the winning run was now on base. Manzanillo though was able to settle down and get Nick Longmire to strike out swinging and then Mejia to fly out to center to end the game and keep the 'Tees record when leading after eight innings at a perfect 43-0, the best mark in the Florida State League. Brevard County got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when Brandon Macias hit a three-run homer to left field, his third homer of the season. Macias went 2-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. For Macias, his three RBI is a new season-high. Nick Ramirez added his 17th shot of the season and his first since June 24, when he led off the third inning with a solo homer to make it a 4-0 game. Ramirez went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. It was Ramirez's second four-hit game of the season and second in the last three games. Palm Beach would get one run back in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single from Popkins. The Cardinals would get just one more run off of Manatees' starting pitcher Chad Pierce (5-3, 3.49 ERA). Pierce had his second straight quality start as he allowed two runs in six innings of work. He yielded seven hits and two walks, while striking out four. In his five appearances (two starts) in the second half of the season thus far, Pierce is 3-1 with a 1.54 ERA. A two-out rally in the fourth inning plated four more for the 'Tees and gave them a 7-1 lead. A two-run homer by Yadiel Rivera started things off and then Mitch Haniger and Ramirez both reached on back-to-back singles. Cameron Garfield then cleared the bases with his 16th double of the season to knock Palm Beach starting pitcher Jay Voss out of the game. Brevard County and Palm Beach will continue their four-game set on Saturday evening with first pitch scheduled for 5:35 p.m. Lefty Jed Bradley (4-3, 4.21) will make his first appearance since June 22 as he will get the start for the Manatees. 7. BA had Jacobs as the Red Sox #13 prospect entering the season. I agree though, the White Sox received good value for a 36 year old reliever owed $3.5 million.
  8. I agree with you. I think they have probably invested too much time and money in him to be willing to part with him for something outside of a major trade. He certainly is an intriguing prospect.
  9. I know Gallo is showing crazy power in A-ball, but he seems to be hopelessly horrendous defensively and is striking out at a 38.5% rate. I heard a Russell Branyan comp recently that made me chuckle given the affinity for Branyan among BF.netters. The comparison was mostly due to the fact Gallo (26 HRs) is chasing Branyan's Sally League HR record of 40. If I was going after a high upside position player in the lower levels of the Rangers organization, it wouldn't be Gallo or Lewis Brinson, but instead 18 year old Ronald Guzman. He is a left handed hitting 1B with good size. While he doesn't project to hit for a ton of power, he makes up for it with an exceptional hit tool which was rated by Baseball Prospectus as his best overall tool. EDIT: I should note I was referring to Guzman more as a contrast to other Rangers teenagers like Gallo and Brinson, and not necessarily other young talent in the Rangers organization like Luis Sardinas or Jorge Alfaro.
  10. Tonight's Brevard County game has been cancelled... Thursday's Manatees/Threshers game cancelled VIERA, Fla. - The scheduled game on Thursday, July 11 between the Brevard County Manatees and the Clearwater Threshers has been cancelled due to inclement weather. Since the Manatees and the Threshers do not play each other again this season, the game will not be made up.
  11. Final: Brevard County 4, Clearwater 2 'Tees score three late to top Threshers Brevard rallies in the eighth to win third straight, 4-2 By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/6/4/53379064/cuts/Moore_7.10_4_nmzks9ss_oo7qdzcs.JPG Brevard County pitcher Alex Moore, the Brewers' 28th round selection in last month's MLB First-Year Player Draft, threw three scoreless innings of relief in his Class A-Advanced debut on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Clearwater Threshers, 4-2, for their third straight win. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO: Game Highlights VIERA, Fla. - Following up on a performance that saw seven runs in the final two team at-bats on Tuesday, the Brevard County Manatees took advantage of the Clearwater Threshers' bullpen again on Wednesday night with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 4-2 win at Space Coast Stadium. With relief pitcher Jordan Guth entering the game, Brandon Macias led off the big inning by poking a single to left, and then D'Vontrey Richardson pushed him over on a sacrifice bunt. Consecutive walks to Yadiel Rivera, Mitch Haniger loaded the bases, with a third straight walk to Nick Ramirez forcing home Macias for the tying run. Cameron Garfield then hit a grounder to second baseman Carlos Alonso, who tossed to second to get the first out, but the throw by shortstop Jose Mojica to first to try double play sailed wide and gave Mitch Haniger time to score from second. A fourth walk by Guth to Greg Hopkins loaded the bases again, but Brevard County (11-8 second half, 48-38 overall) left them loaded though the damage had already been done. None of those runners needed to score in the end, as left Brent Leach came on and posted his third straight scoreless outing for the save. He allowed his first hit in a Manatees' uniform, but struck out the side. The Manatees scored first in the second, with Ramirez taking a leadoff walk and scoring when Ben McMahan grounded into a bases-loaded double play. Three base runners and the run in that frame were the most that the 'Tees could muster against Threshers' southpaw starter Mario Hollands, who matched a career-high nine strikeouts in seven innings. He walked one and ceded just four hits, but did not factor into the decision with Guth taking the loss in his rocky eighth frame. Brevard County starting pitcher Damien Magnifico (0-1, 6.59 ERA) made it through the first pitch in the second inning before leaving, with the trainer and coaches looking at his right hand. Alex Moore, who was drafted in the 28th round of last month's MLB First-Year Player Draft, made his Class A-Advanced debut, in relief of Magnifico. He threw three shutout innings and allowed just two hits and two walks as he left the game in line for the win. Clearwater (9-9, 44-42) took a 2-1 lead in the fifth against Matt Miller, using a Carlos Alonso run-scoring triple and Aaron Altherr's RBI single to plate the two runs. Final game of both the three-game series and the season series between the Threshers and the Manatees is scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. Cody Scarpetta (0-3, 5.59) will start on the mound for Brevard County and he will be matched up against lefty Hoby Milner (8-4, 4.24) for Clearwater. 16. Even in the middle of a tough season like this one it is moments like tonight, i.e. seeing Wily shove it on the mound, go the distance, smile ear-to-ear while hugging his teammates when its over, then giving his mom in attendance at her first Brewers game an "I love you, mom" in his post-game interview is the exact reason I keep coming back to baseball no matter how bad things seem. Wow.
  17. Final: Brevard County 4, Tampa 3 'Tees snap four-game skid with seventh walk-off win Brevard County tops Tampa on Haniger's game-winning double By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/4/0/49621840/cuts/Haniger_5.31_cgq4oszn_flud46mw.JPG Manatees right fielder Mitch Haniger, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-5 with two doubles, including the game-winner, in Brevard County's 4-3 walk-off win over the Tampa Yankees on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO: Game Highlights VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees' first lead of the game came at the best possible time, with Mitch Haniger's walk-off double propelling them to a 4-3 win over the Tampa Yankees on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Brevard County (9-8 second half, 46-38 overall) and also prevented the 'Tees from being swept in a series for just the second time this season. Of the Manatees' 28 home wins, seven have come via walk-offs. T.J. Mittelstaedt has either scored the winning run or provided the final hit in five of those. Monday was no different, after Mittelstaedt reached on a one-out single in the ninth. He was able to score the winning run all the way from first when Mitch Haniger laced a two-out double to the left field corner that fell right at the base of the wall. Until the bottom of the eighth inning, the 'Tees trailed Tampa (7-7, 35-47) the entire way through. A trio of two-out singles from Cameron Garfield, Greg Hopkins and Ben McMahan put the tying run across the plate. Tampa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Taylor Dugas led off the inning by drawing a walk. Ben Gamel then singled and after a fielder's choice put runners at the corners with one out, Gary Sanchez cleared the bases with a two-run double. Brevard County was able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third. Ben McMahan led off with a double, the first of his two hits, and then advanced to third on the first of Bryan Mitchell's two wild pitches in the inning. Four batters later, McMahan was finally able to cross the plate as Yadiel Rivera's sacrifice fly put the Manatees on the board to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Not backing down, the Yankees once again pushed the lead to two runs in the fourth with Saxon Butler's leadoff double, a bunt by Jose Toussen and a sacrifice fly by Dugas. Brevard County starting pitcher Jacob Barnes (6-2, 3.49 ERA) was able to make it through seven innings with just three runs allowed for his third quality start of the season. He worked around a career-high nine hits and struck out five opponents in the no-decision. Yankees' starter Bryan Mitchell also did not factor into the decision as he left the game after 6.2 frames with runners on first and second. He was charged with the first two Brevard County runs, which they put together with a total of six hits and four walks. Mitchell fanned just three batters. The Manatees battled back with a run in the sixth to keep it close. Back-to-back one-out doubles from Haniger and Nick Ramirez cut Tampa's lead to 3-2 and set up the late inning heroics. Brevard County banged out 11 hits, including four doubles on the night. Haniger, Garfield, Hopkins and McMahan each had two hits. Earning the win in just his second appearance for the 'Tees was southpaw Brent Leach, who threw two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts out of the bullpen. Brevard County will open a three-game series with the Clearwater Threshers at Space Coast Stadium starting on Tuesday with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Tyler Cravy (1-1, 3.34) will make just his second start for the Manatees after four innings of one-run ball in his only other start of the season, which ironically enough was against the Threshers, back on June 27. He also held Daytona to just one hit through four frames out of the bullpen this past Friday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO: Game Highlights AUDIO: Alex Moore Pre-Game Interview (Congrats to Alex, a 28th round selection in this year's draft, on getting a chance in high-A ball) VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped their fourth straight game as they were defeated 2-1 by the Tampa Yankees on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium. Both teams scored one run each in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie, with the visitors plating the eventual game winner in the top of the ninth. Each of Tampa's two runs were largely enabled by mistakes from the Brevard County (8-8 second half, 45-38 overall), as Rob Refsnyder scored first after taking a lead-off walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch from Manatees' starting pitcher Chad Pierce (4-3, 3.53 ERA). Saxon Butler provided the single that allowed the run to score and give the Yankees (7-6, 35-46) a 1-0 lead. Despite the one run, Pierce turned in a quality spot start. He held Tampa to just two hits in his six innings of work, though he walked three to go along with his three strikeouts. Dan Fiorito, batting in place of Alex Rodriguez, led off the ninth with a single and moved up to second when Brandon Macias couldn't cleanly field a grounder to third. A wild pitch from Santo Manzanillo put Fiorito on third, from where he scored on a Yeral Sanchez sacrifice fly. Rodriguez, who was with Tampa for the second straight night as part of his Major League rehab assignment, was the team's designated hitter and batted second in the order. Rodriguez went 0-for-3 and grounded into an inning-ending double play in the sixth inning. Manzanillo was hung with the loss despite the run that he allowed being unearned. It was his second losing decision in as many appearances with Brevard County this year. The Manatees once again saw production from the bottom of the lineup, as Lance Roenicke followed his four-hit performance on Saturday with a hit and a run scored on Sunday. After Roenicke reached on a one-out single in the fifth, Brandon Macias singled to right, moving Roenicke to third. D'Vontrey Richardson followed with a hot shot at third baseman Peter O'Brien to bring the run home. Brevard County will look to avoid the three-game sweep in Monday's finale that is set for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Jacob Barnes (6-2, 3.44) is set to take the hill for the Manatees against Bryan Mitchell (4-8, 4.75) and the Yankees. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO: Game Highlights AUDIO: Brent Dean Pre-Game Interview AUDIO: A-Rod Post-Game Interview VIERA, Fla. - With one of the biggest superstars that the game of baseball has ever seen on their roster, the Tampa Yankees were able to take down the Brevard County Manatees, by the score of 6-1 on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium in front of 3,148 fans. Alex Rodriguez, a 14-time Major League All-Star and three-time American League Most Valuable Player ended the first game of his rehab stint with Tampa by going 1-for-2 with a run scored. He was also hit by a pitch on the upper left thigh by Brevard County (8-7 second half, 45-37 overall) starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta, just below his surgically-repaired hip, and was retired at the front end of a double play following the hit. In the field, Rodriguez snared a Greg Hopkins liner in the second and cleanly fielded both ground balls hit his way at third base. However, the true story on the night for the Yankees was another Miami native, Peter O'Brien. He earned some positive comments from the big-leaguer in a post-game press conference, as O'Brien went 2-for-4 with five runs batted in, including three on a bases-clearing triple that scored Saxon Butler, Ben Gamel and Rodriguez to give Tampa (6-6, 34-46) a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. Scarpetta (0-3, 5.59 ERA) was handed the loss, taking responsibility for all three runs after he left the game with the bases loaded as O'Brien's three-run triple came against Stephen Peterson. Scarpetta surrendered two hits and four walks, while fanning a pair his 4.2 innings of work. O'Brien also knocked in Jose Toussen for the final run, after Toussen notched a two-run double to plate Ali Castillo and Gamel in the seventh. Lance Roenicke's first of a career-high four hits - a double in the second - drove in Cameron Garfield for the lone Manatees' run. Garfield and Roenicke combine for six of Brevard County's seven hits. Brevard County (8-7, 45-37) left nine men on base, drew just two walks and struck out seven times. Rodriguez and the Yankees return to Space Coast Stadium on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. Chad Pierce (4-3, 3.75) is slated to take the hill for Brevard County against Tampa's Corey Black (2-7, 4.20).
