  1. Nice article on Ed Lucas' long 10-year trip to get to the Majors. Tough not to root for guys like him.
  2. Nate, apparently the Royals front office liked him also. Dozier went with the #8 pick, first big surprise of the draft.
  3. Hunter Dozier to KC? He was the 4th Hunter on the BA list (behind Hunter Renfroe, Hunter Green, Hunter Harvey). I am guessing they made a pre-draft deal to save some money for the later picks.
  4. FINAL: Mother Nature No Hits Manatees Wednesday's game in Fort Myers postponed Manatees and Miracle to play doubleheader on Thursday By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees FORT MYERS, Fla. - The scheduled game on Wednesday, June 5 between the Brevard County Manatees and the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday, June 6, beginning at 5:05 p.m. in Fort Myers. The Manatees and the Miracle will play two seven-inning games. The Manatees return home to Space Coast Stadium on Saturday, June 8 to take on the Daytona Cubs at 6:35 p.m.
  5. FINAL: Brevard County 3, Fort Myers (Twins) 2 Manatees' three homers top Miracle Bradley throws six quality innings in 3-2 win over Fort Myers By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/4/0/49621840/cuts/Haniger_5.31_cgq4oszn_flud46mw.JPG Manatees center fielder Mitch Haniger, seen here in a game from earlier this season, hit his first home run with Brevard County on Tuesday night. Haniger's homer was one of three solo homers for the Manatees on the night, as they defeated the Fort Myers Miracle 3-2 at Hammond Stadium.. FORT MYERS, Fla. - Powerful bats and a tremendous pitching performance led the Brevard County Manatees to a 3-2 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle on Tuesday Night at Hammond Stadium. Three solo home runs were all the scoring that the Manatees (30-27) would need behind starting pitcher Jed Bradley (4-2, 4.68). The lefty tossed six innings, allowed just one run on three hits, while walking two and striking out three. For Bradley, it was his first win since May 5 against Charlotte and his first win on the road since April 9 in Lakeland. Mitch Haniger crushed a first pitch fastball over the left field wall to lead off the third inning. Haniger's first home run with the Manatees gave Brevard County a 1-0 lead. Cameron Garfield hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to double the Brevard County lead. For the newly named Florida State League All-Star, Garfield, it was his seventh homer of the season. One inning later, Lance Roenicke laced his second homer of the year and his solo blast to left field gave the Manatees a 3-0 lead. All three Brevard County home runs came off of Miracle (40-17) starting pitcher Jason Wheeler. Miguel Sano would get Fort Myers on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the sixth as he hit an opposite field solo homer to right field, trimming the lead to two. Andre Lamontagne entered for the seventh to relieve Bradley. Lamontagne allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases with two outs. Eddie Rosario, who entered the day as the FSL's leading hitter, lifted a shallow fly ball to left that was caught by Ben McMahan to end the threat. After earning the save on Monday night, Tommy Toledo was called upon for a six-out save as he entered with a two-run lead in the eighth inning. He allowed an unearned run in the eighth to make it a 3-2 ballgame. The Manatees were unable to tack on any insurance runs in the top of the ninth and Toledo went back out to the hill with the one run lead. After he retired the first two batters, Levi Michael singled to right field and then Rosario walked to keep the Miracle alive. Sano, the league-leader in home runs, was next to the plate with two on and two out. Toledo was able to win the battle, as he struck out Sano looking on a slider with a 1-2 count to clinch yet another one-run victory for the Manatees. With the win, Brevard County improved to 16-5 on the season in one-run games. Game three of the four-game series will take place on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Another Brevard County All-Star, David Goforth (4-5, 3.05) will be on the mound for the Manatees. Matt Summers (1-4, 3.99) will get the call for the Miracle. 6. Count me in. I had given up hope on a BP event taking place at MP, so kudos to you for doing something about it! Edit: I would purchase a couple of tickets. I hope this post generates some interest, these events seems to provide an opportunity to have an honest/quality conversation with front office staff and a chance to interact with some of BP's stellar staff.
  7. FINAL: Brevard County 6, Fort Myers (Twins) 4 Brevard takes opener in Fort Myers 'Tees top South division leading Miracle, 6-4 By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/9/6/49542596/cuts/Suter_5.22_3_mrd947ok_lnxys2xx.JPG Manatees starting pitcher Brent Suter, seen here in a game from earlier this season, allowed three runs in seven innings of work as Brevard County defeated the Fort Myers Miracle 6-4 on Monday night at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. AUDIO: Pre-Game Interview with Andre Lamontagne FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees' offense lashed out 12 hits in a 6-4 win over the Fort Myers Miracle on Monday night at Hammond Stadium. Brevard County (29-27) set the tone early by plating three runs in the top of the third inning. T.J. Mittelstaedt led off the frame with a single to left field. With one out, Lance Roenicke sent a towering fly ball to left field that Aderlin Mejia couldn't track down while trying to avoid crashing into the wall. Roenicke's double put two men in scoring position for Brandon Macias, who singled sharply through the left side to score Mittelstaedt. Greg Hopkins doubled to dead center to plate both runners and give the Manatees a 3-0 lead. Fort Myers (40-16) would respond with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Eddie Rosario and Miguel Sano hit back-to-back RBI doubles to cut the deficit to one. Levi Michael scored on Rosario's double after lacing a double of his own. One inning later, the Miracle tied the game on a two-out RBI bloop single to left field by Stephen Wickens that fell between shortstop Brandon Macias and left fielder Ben McMahan. The 'Tees would retake the lead in the sixth inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Nick Ramirez smacked a double to left-center field. McMahan then singled to left and Ramirez slid in safely ahead of the throw from Mejia to put Brevard County up 4-3. Brevard County starting pitcher Brent Suter (4-3, 3.50) did not need any more support from the offense, as he scattered nine hits over seven innings en route to the victory. He surrendered three runs and did not walk a batter, while striking out four. After the Manatees extended the lead to two on a two-out RBI double by Ramirez in the top of the eighth, Kevin Shackelford went right through the heart of the Miracle order in the bottom half of the inning. Shackelford retired Sano, Kennys Vargas and Angel Morales on 12 pitches in a 1-2-3 frame. Mittelstaedt provided some more insurance for the 'Tees with a solo home run to deep right field in the top of the ninth. For Mittelstaedt, it was his fifth homer of the season and hist third hit of the night. With a 6-3 lead, closer Tommy Toledo entered seeking his sixth save of the season. Toledo struggled with his command to start the inning as he walked two of the first three batters. After a wild pitch that put runners on second and third, Michael hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to two once again. With two outs, Mejia came to the plate representing the tying run. Toledo retired the left fielder on a slow roller to second to end the ballgame. The same two clubs will be back in action tomorrow for a 7:05 p.m. start at Hammond Stadium. Jed Bradley (3-2, 5.11) will toe the rubber for Brevard County and Fort Myers will send a lefty of their own to the mound in Jason Wheeler (5-0, 3.94). 8. What's the old saying, "Conjecture happens". In all seriousness this board would be pretty boring if everything was only discussed at the surface level and greater questions/theories/debate weren't shared. I would ease up a little on those sharing their opinions. Like this, excellent conjecture. It is actually something I have thought for a while. My completely uninformed opinion of the matter is that Weeks appears to have some sort of depth perception issue. Especially in the field on some of fly balls and line outs he has misplayed over the last two years it appears like he isn't seeing the ball well at all. Again that is just complete speculation on my part and devoid of any actual evidence.

  10. 'Tees shutout in shortened game Brevard falls 5-0 to Daytona in contest called early due to rain By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, FLA. - The Daytona Cubs scored early and often again in a 5-0 rain-shortened victory over the Brevard County Manatees at Space Coast Stadium on Sunday night. The Cubs plated three runs in the top of the first inning against Manatees' starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta (0-1, 8.10), who was making his first appearance in a game since having Tommy John surgery last May. The righty walked Tim Saunders and Ben Carhart to lead off the game. Javier Baez plated Saunders with a single to left field to put Daytona on the board. Jorge Soler then chopped a single to left field to make it 2-0 Cubs. After Baez and Soler advanced to second and third, respectively, on a Scarpetta wild pitch, Scarpetta unleashed another wild pitch that plated Baez. Scarpetta would settle down after a rocky first inning, but he went just 3.1 innings and allowed just the three runs on three hits. He walked four and struck out three. Brooks Hall came on to relieve Scarpetta for the Manatees (28-27) in the fourth. He would finish off the game, which was called during the seventh inning stretch due to rain. Hall surrendered two runs - one earned run - over his 3.2 innings of work. Daytona (28-26) starter Austin Kirk was credited with a six-inning complete game shutout. He scattered five hits and three walks, while striking out seven. Mitch Haniger had two of the five Brevard County hits, including a fifth inning double, as well as a stolen base. Greg Hopkins, Cameron Garfield and Yadiel Rivera each recorded a hit as well for the 'Tees The Manatees will hit the road and open a four-game series with the Fort Myers Miracle (40-15) on Monday night, with first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Brent Suter (3-3, 3.44) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. He will be opposed by Matt Tomshaw (1-0, 1.50) for Fort Myers. Brevard County Box Score FINAL: Daytona 5, Brevard County 0 Gregory Hopkins: 1-3 Mitch Haniger: 2-3, 2B, SB Cameron Garfield: 1-3 Yadiel Rivera: 1-3, 2B Cody Scarpetta's final line was 3.1 IP, 3 Hits, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO, and 2 WP. All three hits he gave up were singles. Both of his wild pitches were in the first inning including one that scored Javier Baez. He did force three straight strikeouts swinging at one point (two to end the 1st inning and one to start the 2nd inning). It was noted during the radio broadcast that he was changing his landing point of his front foot during the outing although they admitted he has always pitched with an awkward and hard downward action on his front leg that causes his foot to slide/double-tap on landing. It was also mentioned that the stadium gun which was recently fixed was again not working during the game. Brooks Hall pitched the remaining 3.2 of the rain shortened game and finished with 3 Hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, and 1 WP. Brevard County Play-by-Play Scarpetta's first regular season inning on the mound since August of 2011 started out shaky (2 BB, 2 WP, 3 ER), but ended with two swinging strikeouts: Daytona Top of the 1st -Tim Saunders walks. -With Ben Carhart batting, Tim Saunders steals (16) 2nd base. -Ben Carhart walks. 11. Video review took away Lucroy's HR and gave him a triple. I think they blew that review, but not much arguing from the Brewers staff.
  12. Grand Slam for Lucroy! Wow, 2-run game now. Who saw this coming?!

  15. Brevard shelled at Daytona, 14-5 'Tees allow season-highs in both runs and hits By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/2/8/45452128/cuts/Rivera_4.7_1_11cqiqdc_vn1jf6l3.JPG Manatees shortstop Yadiel Rivera, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Brevard County's 14-5 loss to the Daytona Cubs on Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. In his last five games, Rivera is hitting .333. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Daytona Cubs scored early and often on its way to a 14-5 win over the Brevard County Manatees on Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, with all 14 of Daytona's runs coming in the first four innings. Through those opening frames, the first five men in the Cubs order each had four plate appearances, with Javier Baez recording four of his five total hits for the game. Those four hits included three doubles and a home run, accounting for six runs batted in and three runs scored. Daytona was held to just one run was scored in the first inning, despite the first three batters in the lineup all reaching base before an out was recorded. Five runs came across in the second as the Cubs batted around. The second innings included a total of five hits, including three doubles, plus a walk. Brevard County (28-26) gave itself hope of repeating Friday night's comeback effort with a run in the top of the third. Chadwin Stang doubled, moved to third on T.J. Mittelstaedt's single and then scored on a Greg Hopkins sacrifice fly. Stang finished as one of four men to record multiple hits for the Manatees, joining Mittelstaedt, Cody Hawn and Yadiel Rivera. The third inning proved most troublesome for the 'Tees, with the Daytona (27-26) sending 11 men to the dish and bringing six across to extend their lead to 14-1. Just two of the team's seven hits in the frame went for extra bases, including the three-run home run by Javier Baez and a double by Dustin Geiger. Brevard County starting pitcher Chad Pierce (2-2, 4.42) was lifted in favor of Stephen Peterson during the third and would be saddled with the loss. Pierce allowed a career high ten runs on 12 hits and walked two while striking out four in 2.1 innings. Jorge Soler added the only other home run of the night in the bottom of the fourth inning, a two run shot that brought home Baez after his third double. Both of those hits came with two outs. Peterson went 2.2 innings and was charged with four runs, including two in the third inning and the two on Soler's homer. He retired the first two batters in both the fourth and fifth innings, but still allowed a total of six hits with just one walk and two strikeouts. Daytona's 14 runs and 20 hits marked season highs in each category for a Manatees opponent. Andre Lamontagne appeared next out of the bullpen and turned in his best outing of the year, needing only 16 pitches to get through two full innings. It was his first multiple inning assignment and he held the Cubs to only one hit. Kevin Shackelford fanned two with a hit and a walk in the eighth and final defensive inning for Brevard. Chipping away at Daytona's bullpen and Austin Reed, the first man behind Daytona starting pitcher P.J. Francescon, the Manatees opened the seventh with a Hawn double and then consecutive singles from Ben McMahan and Rivera to bring a run across. McMahan was also scored when Mitch Haniger drew a bases loaded walk. The Manatees also scored one run each in both the eighth and ninth innings. Rivera drove in Hawn with a two-out single in the eighth and Nick Ramirez plated Mittelstaedt on a sacrifice fly in the ninth. The third and final game of the series will take place Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Brevard County Box Score FINAL: Daytona 14, Brevard County 5 T.J. 16. I find myself wishing the Brewers would be bad enough for a top 5 pick but there's just too much talent on the MLB roster not to make a run and end up within a handful of games of .500 either way. All it would take is Gallardo and Peralta to step up they will start winning games. I still think the Brewers could have winning season if the young pitching ascends. I don't think the situation is nearly as bleak as it appeared through most of May. I would love a relatively "easy" impact pitching solution though. I just think a trade is still our best bet. I completely agree Crew, I didn't mean to insinuate I thought that it was likely (which in hindsight makes using the term "realistically" a poor choice on my part). I expect May was an aberration and the team is likely to end up finishing closer to 80 wins than 60, but I do find myself rooting for one of two scenarios at this point: 1) a 90 win team OR 2) a team that becomes sellers and acquires an infusion of young talent via trades and finishes with a poor enough record to have a top 10 draft pick I enjoy winning, but unfortunately being a 78 win team in MLB is not a very rewarding place to finish.
  17. With rain delays affecting several other FSL games, the BC Manatees probably wish they could have been so lucky. Rough start for Chad Pierce, the second time he has started a game this season. Pierce final line: 2.1 IP / 12 H / 10 ER / 2 BB / 4 K / Hits included 6 doubles and 1 HR
  18. Okay, this technically isn't regarding this year's draft, but I am looking forward to watching former 21st overall pick (2011 Draft - Blue Jays) Tyler Beede pitch for Vanderbilt tonight in the NCAA Regional (on ESPN U) at 7:30pm versus Illinois. The kid is 14-0 with a 2.10 ERA on the season and by most accounts has enough upside to be a top 5 pick in next June's MLB Draft. Based on the Brewers start I wouldn't rule him out as a guy that may be realistically on their draft board in 2014.
  19. I hope Mass Haas doesn't mind I pulled his link of the Doug Melvin audio over from the Link Report since it starts right at the beginning. Here are a few things from the interview that made me cringe: Doug Melvin said referring to the Reds, "they gave up on Travis Wood" and shipped him to the Cubs. Well in actuality the Reds traded him for a pretty good pitcher, but that is besides the point. Isn't Doug the last person that should be giving a team a hard time for sending away future talent to fill a current need? Not to mention, I don't think any GM should be referring to a player being traded as "giving up" on the player. He used that term a couple of times during the conversation. That seems like a very misguide way to refer to talent acquisition. Melvin said in regards to players like Carlos Gomez who have "physical skills and physical talents" that "you never give up on them". Brett Lawrie had physical skills and physical talents. Granted there were personality conflicts that led the Brewers to "give up" on Lawrie, but obviously sometimes you do trade away players with "physical skills and physical talents". Melvin said "people use publications to determine top prospects". He was basically inferring that people put to much stock in published talent evaluation resources. Interesting dig considering earlier in the conversation he highlighted the Brewers previous success by pointing out in 2011 the team appeared "on the cover of Sports Illustrated". As was mentioned earlier, in the thread when asked about Carlos Rodon Doug Melvin said, "I don't remember the name". At first I was dumbfounded by the (lack of) comment regarding Carlos Rodon. Then the more I thought about it I realized [sarcasm]Doug is actually ingenious. He is just "playing dumb" to throw other GM's off his scent. He took it to the extent of acting like he had no recollection of the Brewers drafted the kid just two years ago. Well played.[/sarcasm]

  22. Can someone please photo shop a Brewers hat on Bill Murray? http://fiendx.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/groundhog_day.jpg
  23. For those following the NCAA Baseball tournament, this is a nice summary of 2013 MLB Draft prospects playing in the post-season. I don't necessarily agree with where they have guys projected (like Peterson as a potential top 10 pick), but still does a nice job highlighting some guys to watch now that the NCAA Regionals are underway.
  24. This is a joke right? If this is true it might signal my most disheartening moment to date as a Brewers fan.
  25. Great summary using some of this years early returns! I enjoy reading the updated prospect rankings, it provides a great snapshot in time of what is certainly a volatile market. Especially the Tyrone Taylor analysis, he certainly appears to have one of the highest ceilings in a system right now. Also hoping Jorge Lopez can continue to improve and move his way up by time Brad's next edition of the Top 25 organizational prospect list is released.
