  1. he did pretty well in Helena. He averaged well over 5 innings per start.
  2. I imagined someone named Ulrich Snijders might have looked a bit different.
  3. I believe there is room for one guy on the 40-man, two if Cameron doesn't count. So, it does kinda surprise me that Nix wasn't brought up since he is a plus defender in CF and a LH bat. Does this mean they've given up on him?
  4. this may get moved to the off-topic board, but... I think it would be a great reality show to have Turnbow and McClung be roommates.
  5. I'm willing to bet that they asked revocable waivers on McClung at the end of spring training, and he's on the team because someone claimed him. If so, they might be reluctant to expose him to other teams. I'm also willing to bet that they had a deal with Kapler, more-or-less assuring him he would be on the roster for the first 25 days (assuming he did ok in ST etc.). He could play himself on the team after that.
  6. Chris Young's contract is stupid. He hasn't proven that he can get on base at a good enough clip. I would only do something like this for a player that I had utmost confidence in, and sitting here at my computer, and not living with these guys for 162 games, I can't have enough confidence in any of them. Melvin and Yost have much more knowledge about these guys than I ever will. I just hope they only do it for the really elite. I have apprehension even about Braun and Fielder. Braun because he really can't field a lick, and I wonder if that suggests he really doesn't put in the effort to that part of his game. Fielder because weight is an issue. I would offer a long-term contract to Fielder, but would wait on Braun until next season.
  7. That power ranking was after the first series. If you thought the cubs were better than the brewers before the season, that one series shouldn't change things. Let's see how the rankings change on the 11th (presumably the next ranking will be a week after the last).
  8. yeah, pitching is tough to come by. And how many 23-year-old 1B have hit 50 HR? Only one, so Prince is probably more transcendent than is Sheets.
  9. 20 million really is a lot of money, even for baseball players. that would put sheets in the top 10 or so largest salaries. He doesn't deserve that. He's not going to get a Zito-esque contract-- 7 years for 126 million--18 million per.
  10. just like the cards aren't going to finish with a 1.83 ERA, the brewers aren't going to finish with a .300 average.
  11. Detroit fans were so obnoxious before the season, this comeuppance is great. I'd still be surprised if they won less than 90 games, though.
  12. 16 million for 2-3 years might be in their budget, but 16 million for 6-7 years probably isn't, or if it is, it definitely means Fielder is leaving.
  13. Pujols, Glaus, and Duncan (against RH pitching) is a pretty formidable trio. Maybe Ankiel will be tough, too. I wouldn't write off their offense yet.
  14. I was about to post this very idea.
  15. If suppan stays healthy, provides 200+ innings, performing only slightly better than last year, he would be quite a reasonable pickup for some team, considering they would only have to pay him for two years. The Mets, for example, would probably love to have him. Attanasio's comment does make it sound like he expects some other team to overpay for Ben, but it doesn't necessarily sound like they won't try to sign him after the season. If a couple of our younger guys get injured this season, retaining Ben seems more likely, simply because they won't have a choice.
  16. Peavey had eaten some bad mexican food. he had to poop in a hurry between innings. cut him some slack.
  17. 2 high picks for a setup reliever (linnebrink) is a pretty good deal. 2 high picks for an ace isn't going to replace him. either signing him to an extension or trading him before the deadline would be the best choice. You can't trade him if you are in a playoff race.
  18. bad innings are much more likely vs. philadelphia than they are san francisco.
  19. if torres can go 3 innings occasionally, that would be huge.
  20. I think he'd have trouble getting low enough to catch.
  21. who is Ewing? he must be an old-timer.
  22. Rivera is obviously an all-hit catcher. BA is 1.000 and CERA is 18.00.
  23. why did rowand get pulled? If they don't have him, they are even more wretched.
  24. How do 3 guys that have an ERA under 5 add up to an ERA over 5? The independence thing is an assumption you used to get the 34(or 35) %. It's not true. If they are not independent--bad innings tend to cluster within a game rather than scatter across all games--then the blowup happens less frequently.
  25. They are very comparable players. I think Rios has more service time, though.
