  1. This is exactly my point. CC isnt signing with us and even if he does its way riskier than giving Sheets a 3 yr deal for less money. Sheets is just as good as Sabathia and will cost much less which leaves money to improve the rest of the team.
  2. I would offer Sheets 3 yr/ 45 million. For a pitcher of his stature that is more than fair and it would be a contract that wouldnt destroy the teams financial flexibility. There is no reason to let Sheets leave for a contract like that from the yankees. I really feel we are undervaluing a great pitcher in Sheets and that is a shame.
  3. I dont understand this opt out situation at all. I am all for it if it means we can opt out as well but giving CC the right to get out of the contract is ridiculous if we receive no protection. The Blue Jays were dopes for letting Burnett have a one way opt out contract. For Burnett it was a no lose situation; pitch well and get paid even more or get injured and still have the security of a long term contract. Situations like this creates a no win situation for the team and a no lose situation for the player. If CC insists on this we should just let him walk.
  4. Im sorry but I dont think Sheets has been treated well at all. The Brewers made no attempts to resign him last offseason when it made sense for both sides and now are showing him no love as well. The fans have not appreciated him either. The guy has been a great pitcher for the better part of his 8 seasons yet few appreciate his contributions. I will be devastated if he ends up in New York for a 2 yr deal while we sign garland or some other 5th starter. So it looks like the Cubs will add another ace and the Brewers will lose 2 of them. That is no way to compete and it just makes me wish we let Jack Z become GM and let Melvin go.
  5. Have we made any attempt to speak to Peavy about his no trade clause? I have a major problem with the Cubs aquiring another ace for scraps while we sit around and wait for CC to reject us and make no effort whatsoever to sign Sheets. Are we seriously gonna go into next year with Gallardo as our number one starter? I love Yovani but thats a lot of pressure on his shoulders. We cant afford to watch the Cubs get Peavy while we let our two aces leave without viable replacements. If we miss out on CC, Sheets, and Peavy and sign a stiff like Garland I will be very disappointed.
  6. Sheets is going to leave because the team hasnt treated him well at all. Melvin has made no sincere efforts to keep Ben and that will turn out to be a huge mistake. When all is said and done CC and Ben will be gone and Peavy will be a Cub and the Brewers will sign Garland or Perez for way may than they are worth. Maybe Im panicking but I have lost all confidence in Melvin to do the right thing. We could sign Sheets to a 3 yr 42 mil dollar deal and that would be better than overpaying CC or paying big money for a "durable" innings eater like Garland.
  7. There is no reason why we shouldnt make a run at Peavy. The Cubs are offering a bunch of garbage and I am sure we can beat that without totally depleting our system.
  8. Sabathia and his agents are really holding the Brewers hostage by telling Melvin that we are still in it. We are stuck waiting for CC and Melvin cant do anything other than sign scrap heap guys like swindle and Julio in the meantime. So the end resullt will probably be CC goes to the yankees, Sheets leaves the Brewers and Melvin is left standing there with no backup plan to improve the team. I really have a bad feeling that we are gonna end up overpaying a Garland type while Sheets and sabathia leave. If that happens we will have no chance to compete next year as garland is another Suppan.
  9. The more I think about it the less I like this signing. If ever there was an offseason to get a top flight closer this would be it. There are tons of Julios out there, such as our own Mota that can be had later for minor league deals. I really hope that this isnt a sign of what kind of offseason this will be; one where we only acquire third rate players. Julio walks way too many guys to be reliable and I dont see him being any better than Coffey or Dillard much less as a closer candidate. Melvin needs to get going and acquire some real players or this team will be back fighting the Reds and Pirates instead of the Cubs. I am getting more and more concerned each day with the direction this organization is headed.
  10. i really hope we arent counting on this guy to be an integral part of the bullpen. I actually consider him to be a worse version of Mota, good stuff but no control. Does this mean we wont be making a run at a real closer like Wood or Fuentes?
  11. If the Brewers lose both CC and Sheets they need to make a run at Peavy. We can offer Escobar and others and that will easily top the garbage that the Cubs are offering.
  12. Jack Z working his magic already.
  13. They arent giving up Hughes but might be willing to dump Kennedy especially if they sign CC and either Burnett or Lowe. They are more than willing to give up Cabrera because they realize he isnt an everyday player. They approached the Brewers about Cameron but were only offering Cabrera and a middle relief prospect which Melvin never seriously considered because the Brewers are not high on Cabrera and really value Camerons defense. I was told that NY would probably give up Kennedy provided they sign two free agent starters but Hughes is off limits unless it was for a Peavy type.
  14. The economy is really hitting the owners hard. You have to wonder how this will adversely affect the Brewers since Mark A runs a money management firm that surely got hit hard by the falling market.
  15. I would definitely like to sign Wood to a 2 yr contract. He has the highest upside of any of the relievers and we dont have to give up a draft pick. I dont understand why anyone would want to count on McClung when he hasnt shown that he can throw strikes consistently.
  16. I would sign Hardy long term and trade Escobar for young pitching. As great as Escobar is defensively I just dont know if he will ever hit enough. JJ is a leader on this team and one of the best shortstops in baseball; just the type of guy we should build around.
  17. Dempster is not better than Sheets today and he never will be.
  18. Why would the Cubs eat a ton of his contract and trade him to the Brewers? I could see them dumping him outside the division just to get rid of the contract but they wouldnt trade him to us unless we picked up his bloated contract which we would never do.
  19. He is a decent enough player but I sure as heck wouldnt give up Rickie Weeks for him. A couple of mid range prospects is as high as I would go.

  23. Hopefully that takes them out of the hunt for Sheets.
  24. I would hate to see Hart or Swisher as our CF next yr. After years of poor defense it was nice having Cameron playing CF and I hope he is there for us next season as well.
  25. I have a friend that works for the Yankees. He told me about there interest in Cameron awhile back and told me they were willing to give Melky and a bullpen arm like Marquez. I was also told that the Brewers were very leery of Melky but the Yankees didnt want to give up Kennedy or Austin Jackson for one yr of Cameron. I havent been told anything about Swisher so that is all guesswork on my part but I do know that NY wants Cameron. I am not sure if they want Cameron as an inducement for CC to sign there but they definitely have interest in cam.
