  1. Fielder looking pretty good given his weight (or at least former weight). They need to put in a legit fat guy, maybe Bartolo Colon?
  2. Melvin just needs to go out and trade for a shortstop, two bench outfielders, a bench utility player, some relievers, and four starting pitchers, and we are back in business for the playoffs!!! *Edit* Oh yeah, and a first baseman.
  3. Braun wasn't selected by the manager/league despite being one of the leading vote getters by the fans? [sarcasm]I can't believe it!!![/sarcasm]
  4. I can't comprehend how Cubs fans could be mad about trading a soon-to-be free agent who had a 4.34 ERA last season and getting an elite shortstop prospect who is arguably a top-10 prospect in all of baseball. I guess the inclusion of Hammel is what got it done, but that is an amazing return for Samardzija. Samardzija is having a great year, but that's like the Brewers trading Gallardo and Estrada for a top-10 prospect. (And Oakland's #2 prospect to boot).
  5. Yeah, I agree. I really want to make fun of the Cubs for failing, but I feel like they actually have a very smart strategy. And Russell is a great return for a non-elite pitcher like Samardzija. Let a young core of position players take over in the majors (and they have great young players/prospects that can fill basically any position other than Catcher) and when that position-player core is ready then you trade for a SP in their prime. AKA the exact same thing the Milwaukee Brewers did in 2008 and 2011...
  6. Top-10 prospect seems like a pretty great return for Samardzija. I guess the bright side for us is that (1) the Cubs can only play one SS at a time... and (2) they put all their eggs in one basket with Russell, as opposed to getting multiple top-100 prospects.
  7. Woah, didn't even realize Jeremy Hermida was in the Brewers system. Anybody else remember when he seemed like the best prospect in baseball?
  8. HiAndTight, I just don't think any pre-draft prospects in the Brewers system are very elite. Which isn't to say that somebody like Devin Williams or even Brandon Diaz couldn't have a huge breakout. The only reason I consider Nelson #1 is because of his proximity to being a decent major league pitcher. I haven't heard anything suggesting Coulter can reasonably be expected to be an "elite defensive catcher," it seems like he might have to move to 1B at best, and coming into the season he wasn't even ranked in the BA Top 10 Brewers prospects. Granted, Haudricourt has a role in writing that list, but it's still based on conversations with scouts. Coulter has cooled off substantially at Wisconsin and even though his numbers on the season are still great (though his cumulative A-ball numbers between 2013-14 are not as amazing), I feel like you need to really crush the ball when you're playing half your games at DH. Arcia/Taylor get the nod over Coulter because they have plus defensive potential and are holding their own offensively. Still, the latest draft haul (plus Lara) has much higher potential in my mind until proven otherwise. I think Jim Callis said offhandedly that all three draftees would rank ahead of anybody else in the Brewers system, so I don't think my rankings are that unreasonable.
  9. I would rank them: 1) Nelson 2) Medeiros 3) Gatewood 4) Harrison 5) Arcia 6) Lara 7) Taylor 8) Coulter
  10. [sarcasm]I know who you're thinking, but I'm pretty sure Betancourt is still under contract in Japan.[/sarcasm]
  11. Jean Segura stinks, pretty much. But oh well, when we traded for him we were basically just hoping for an upgrade over Yuniesky. I'm fine with hiding Segura at the bottom of the order and letting him be a below average SS for the next couple years. Those aren't easy to find.
  12. I figure the Brewers need about 770.0 IP over the rest of the season. Any way that Will Smith could pitch all 770.0 of those? Is it possible? (I guess you can let Lohse start sometimes).
  13. Lara sounds pretty great, but not a huge fan of the name. Why couldn't we sign Arquimedes Gamboa?
  14. 13-12 AL Wins the All-Star Game when an in-play bunt pop-up bounces off Yadier Molina's head and out of play for a ground rule double.
  15. Keep in mind we are talking about a 16-year-old who may or may not have ever set foot outside the Dominican Republic. He is not touring on a high school/college circuit and I doubt even Baseball America or MLB.com have multiple great sources who have seen these international prospects play very much. I suspect the greatest objective "scouting report" of these prospects' value is the actual dollar figures they end up securing from MLB teams. The fact that the Brewers are willing to break the bank and give an unprecedented (for Milwaukee) $3-3.5M for Lara indicates he is pretty good. If he doesn't have the tools to stick at SS, then that probably means they think his bat is extremely impressive even at 1B/LF. If his bat isn't quite that good, then that probably means they think he can stick at SS or at least 3B. We'll find out whether Lara has long-term potential at SS when we see how the Brewers handle him after (hopefully) signing him in a couple weeks.
  16. It's really quite remarkable that we have 51 wins with this starting rotation.
  17. Maybe I am missing something, but how exactly does Mike Trout have a higher fWAR than Tulowitzki, when the latter has a dramatically better offensive line, better defense at a much harder position, and only 15 or so less PA?
  18. Setting aside the degree to which I was being facetious, ingrained bias need not be the result of a conspiracy. Different organizations have different reputations which color how people interpret moves they make. See, for example, all of the punditry making fun of the Dodgers for signing Yasiel Puig a couple years ago. I'm willing to bet the fact that the Brewers are the acknowledged frontrunners for Lara has a certain impact. (But also I was just joking.)
  19. The closer a prospect is linked to the Brewers, the worse his consensus scouting report becomes. It's an immutable law of the universe.
  20. Hairston and K-Rod were both traded for in July. This made me remember Erik Komatsu and look up his stats. Wow, talk about tanking after leaving Milwaukee.
  21. Nice try, Wily.
  22. On that WP, Segura showed some excellent technique with the "walk slowly and pretend like you're on the other team" approach that I used to use in elementary school capture-the-flag.
  23. Zero reason for Estrada do still be in the rotation with Nelson/Fiers lurking.
