  1. Based on the signing bonuses that we currently have, the team has $505,300 to give to Cabell or another >10 round pick, assuming everybody else in the first 10 rounds signs for slot value. What does it normally take to sign those late-round fliers? Edit - actually you can add another couple hundred thousand to that, which incurs a 75% penalty but would not cause us to lose a draft pick. Most teams go over and pay the $ penalty.
  2. I hate that everything the Cubs/Maddon do gets excused because they ended up (barely) winning. Maybe they would be/would have been much better if they were run better. Was thinking of this the other day with the idiotic choice to have pitchers playing LF in a 1-0 game. The fact that it "worked" means they got lucky, not that it wasn't monumentally stupid.
  3. That would be quite a sloppy game by Pina
  4. I don't think the Quintana trade is a good comparator because it seemed like virtually everyone thought including Jimenez was a desperation move and an overpay. That said, I can't imagine Tampa Bay does a deal without Hiura and Burnes. Remember when Santana and/or Phillips seemed like possible centerpieces? Despite being one of the biggest Archer proponents during the offseason, I don't think I would give up Hiura at this point. It's probably fair value-wise, but after the Yelich trade I'm hesitant to further empty the pipeline (unless it's for a guy who can go Sabathia crazy down the stretch like Syndergaard, who I don't see the Mets trading or us being able to afford)
  5. Have to think we could make a strong run at Cabell, especially if Gray signs a bit under slot.
  6. His arsenal is completely changed from when he looked like a possible future TOR pitcher though.
  7. Miller's career numbers disagree with you.
  8. I'd stay far away from Matz. After his significant injuries, he's not the promising young pitcher he was 2-3 years ago. His decent ERA is not supported by his peripherals, and he averages less than 5.0 per start.
  9. Chase Anderson Splits 2017, through May: 55.2 IP, 3.72 ERA, 3.75 FIP, 4.66 xFIP, 1.35 WHIP, .331 wOBAA 2017, from June: 85.2 IP, 2.10 ERA, 3.47 FIP, 4.12 xFIP, 0.92 WHIP, .246 wOBAA 2018, through May: 55.0 IP, 4.42 ERA, 6.26 FIP, 5.37 xFIP, 1.24 WHIP, .337 wOBAA
  10. His velocity increased over the first couple months of the season and he really broke out in June last year as well, so it's something to be optimistic about. (Granted his start to 2018 was worse than his start to 2017 before he broke out)
  11. Why would the Mets trade one of their two reliable SP, both of whom are under control for 3+ years? They're not going into a rebuild.
  12. Not overlooking Guerra at all, but if Anderson starts pitching like 2017 Anderson again, the way he looked tonight against the Cubs, I think Guerra is the #4 in that rotation (which would be great news for us)
  13. Exactly ... they aren't going to add another crap #3-4 starter like Ross or Straily because it's redundant. If they needed that, they'd just hand the ball to Woodruff or Burnes or any other of 4-5 guys they have in the system. No, if they make a move for a starting pitcher, it's going to be someone big. And it's going to cost a lot. I wouldn't call Ross "crap" and in fact he's a perfect target for us. He has the upside of a legit #2 but he should be affordable given that his recent injury history is still deflating his value. Do people not remember how good Ross was from 2013-15 before his injuries? He's looking like the same pitcher again, with strong peripherals all over. I bet Ross will be significantly cheaper than a name brand guy like Cole Hamels, despite being a better pitcher at this point. Nelson-Ross could be a legitimate playoff 1-2, and if Chase Anderson starts pitching well again, we'd really be cooking with gas then.
  14. I mean it would be nice to have Herrera in the bullpen, but why would we use trade capital for a high-end RP when we have one of the best bullpens in baseball and lots of needs elsewhere??
  15. Woah hold on a minute, I hadn't actually looked in detail at Miller's career defensive stats before. Over his career (3089 innings), he is actually rated a decent defender at SS with a -3.0 UZR/150. His only bad season was 2016, when he was pretty bad, but UZR needs more than one season's worth of plays to be really meaningful. He also hasn't played SS in a couple years so you can factor that in too, but he's still only 28. Previously I was just looking at his total defensive WAR for 2015, when he was brutal overall, but that's because the Mariners tried playing him in CF half the season and he was absolutely horrific (-55.2 UZR/150), not because he was bad at SS. Career numbers at SS: Miller, -3.0 UZR/150 (3089 innings) Saladino, -3.7 UZR/150 (495 innings) Sogard, -6.2 UZR/150 (783 innings) Villar, -20.6 UZR/150 (2259 innings) He's also an ideal soft platoon partner for both Villar and Saladino: Miller career vs. RHP: .328 wOBA (55 points over LHP) Villar career vs. LHP: .328 wOBA (19 points over RHP) Saladino career vs. LHP: .296 wOBA (30 points over RHP) What are people basing the "horrific defense" hot takes on? I doubt many on here have watched him play extensively, and statistically he only has one bad season defensively at SS (and even then he was better than Villar has been in his career at either SS or 2B).
  16. Fun fact: before the 2016 season Straily was traded straight up for Erik Kratz
  17. Miller has never been below replacement level even when at his worst defensively (even last year when his offense was limited by injury), so yes bad defense and decent hitting is better than plus defense with atrocious hitting. Miller is better than Sogard, Perez, and, sadly, Arcia in his current form. We've had the second best team defense in the majors this year (UZR), so Stearns may be willing to take a hit there to jumpstart the offense at the bottom of the order.
  18. If Miller could hit as well as he does at SS/2B and play good defense, he would have cost us actual prospects rather than just a change of scenery for Choi, and he would be the everyday SS rather than a bench bat super utility guy (who won't even need to play SS once Saladino comes back, unless Arcia gets sent back down.
  19. It's way too early to write off Arcia as a bust. He is a typical guy who was rushed through to the majors because his glove is so good, but might take a little longer to develop offensively against major league pitching. Andrelton Simmons is a great example of a guy who is having an offensive breakout finally (granted, his defense is so otherworldly that he was a good player even when his bat was mediocre, whereas Arcia's defense is merely elite) It does present the front office with a major difficulty for 2018 though, when we are trying to compete.
  20. 47 PA over his career. Completely meaningless. And Sogard has an OPS somewhere around 300 on the season. Why would he need to "fix" anything when he's already outhitting Braun, Santana, Arcia, Pina, and Villar this season? Down the stretch he will really be replacing Hernan Perez, not Sogard: c Pina 1b Aguilar 2b Villar ss Arcia 3b Shaw lf Yelich cf Cain rf Santana c Kratz 1b/of Thames if Saladino util Miller of/1b Braun Waaaayy better bench there.
  21. Based on what? The Rays stopped playing Miller there because he was replaced by two guys who are only in the major leagues because of their SS defense (first Tim Beckham and then Adeiny Hechavarria), and I think nobody would dispute that Miller is a bad defensive SS and should not be a primary starter there.
  22. I don't really care if he is a horrible defender if he is just the bench UTIL taking over for Sogard. Those numbers are bad but passable for a major league SS, and Miller is still just 28 so it's not like he can no longer play there. Massive upgrade in my opinion. Miller is no star but he's a solid bat to come off the bench and get spot starts around the infield, or even in a platoon with Villar.
  23. Watching the local news video from Hawaii about Micah Bello (linked in the other thread), and I'm extremely disappointed we didn't also draft pitcher Bubba Ho'opi'i-Tuionetoa
  24. This would never, ever happen. A contending team is not going to give up a TOR starter for an upgrade elsewhere, even assuming the two are equal in value. I do think Thames for McHugh is realistic though.
