  1. Yes, me too! My post was very poorly worded. What I meant was that since 2014 the Red Sox have seemed stuck in the old paradigm of MLB while other teams are passing them by. I will agree with you that the last year doesn't look good for them. Thankfully for the Red Sox they're playing with house money with respect to a deep farm system. It will be interesting to see how much things change with Dombrowski in charge.
  2. World Series Championships in 2004, 2007, and 2013. That's an "old paradigm" I'd like to be stuck in. But in reality, the Red Sox are not an old-school team. The Red Sox are in a position to overpay in talent for a pitcher they desperately want because their farm system is ridiculously stocked with talent.
  3. Such a team already exists. In basketball. They're called the Washington Generals and they play the Harlem Globetrotters.
  4. I'm not surprised they parted with Mattingly. I'm surprised they kept him when Friedman came on board. He's not a Friedman-type guy. If I'm a top GM I want my guy (or my type of guy) in the dugout from day 1.
  5. Im pretty sure that hes involved in player acquisitions, i doubt hoyer has full control over who stays and who goes Crane Kenney is the President of Business Operations and Theo is the President of Baseball Operations. Theo has direct oversight over everything that Jed Hoyer does. That said, Theo is a very collaborative supervisor so it's not like Jed Hoyer is a rubber stamp.
  6. Fair enough. I guess you'd have to be a pretty bad manager to make them 14 games worse.
  7. I don't know and it's pretty much impossible to quantify the value of a manager, as much as we want to quantify everything in baseball. I can only base my observations on anecdotal evidence--much of which suggests Joe Maddon is exceptional. I'm not basing this just on in-game decisions; being a manager also takes into account leadership, team unity, being a psychologist, handling the media, and the like. Joe Maddon is exceptional in those categories. Not that this is that big a deal, but when Bruce Froemming was on MLB Network with a couple of other umpires a few years ago they were asked if there were any managers in MLB that when they came out to argue the umpire knew he had made a mistake (i.e., the manager who doesn't come out and blow smoke and grandstand). They all said Joe Maddon. I've been a fan of the Red Sox since 1999 when I was stationed in Rhode Island in the Marines so over the years I've seen a lot of Rays games managed by Maddon. I've also seen Theo Epstein up close since he was 28 year old general manager. Both have impressed me greatly. If I was an owner of team in 2012 and you told me I could have any GM and any manager in the game I wanted I would have selected Theo and Maddon. Well, now the Cubs have them. To go along with the ability to spend a lot of money. Like I said at the beginning of 2015, this is a very bad thing for the Brewers. To address your other question--I won't say CC is good or bad. It's too early to tell.
  8. You guys are either grossly overrating Counsell or underrating Joe Maddon, or both. I'd wager there's not a single GM in baseball who would take CC over Maddon. It's like comparing Aaron Rodgers to Jameis Winston. The point isn't to compare Counsell and Maddon. The point is that it doesn't matter who manages a team with that much talent. I think it does matter. I think the Cubs are as good as they are because of the talent and Maddon. I don't know what their record would have been with CC as the manager all year, but I'm certain it would be worse than what it was with Maddon.

  10. They will. I could see them signing James Shields and Jake Peavy this winter. Or Jon Lester. Or Max Sherzer... Jon Lester it is. And add Jason Hammel back to the fold. Maddon will have talent to work with. I don't like this at all. The Cubs are like the United States on December 7, 1941. A sleeping giant about to awaken. This 502 guy is right. The sleeping giant has awakened. Maybe a year or two before even I thought they would. And as dripping with talent as they are, adding Joe Maddon may have been the best move yet. I wish the Brewers had him.
  11. He shouldn't be suspended at all. If you want to change how the rules are enforced going forward, that's fine.
  12. I think it was a non-dirty play (I won't say it was clean). It was certainly in the gray but not obviously dirty. It was hard-nosed baseball and people are freaking out about because of the result, not the actual slide. Question: Was Matt Holliday suspended for his take out of Marco Scutaro in the 2012 playoffs? Because that play was much dirtier than Chase Utley's. I'm pretty sure the answer is no. If Holliday wasn't suspended there's no way Utley shoud be. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/39049312/v25415817/must-c-collision-holliday-slides-into-scutaro
  13. I'd rather see the best teams in baseball playing in October, rather than the winner of an arbitrarily designed division system.
  14. 502 feet to right field? Amazing.
  15. The Braves won a World Series in 1995.
  16. I most remember Andujar from Game 7 of the '85 World Series. He was brought in to relieve after John Tudor and others were shelled. Andujar clearly was not happy being used in a game in which the Cards were losing by 11 so he got himself tossed and headed to the showers. Herzog got tossed too.
  17. At this point, dealing him for some A-level prospects with a ceiling would not be a bad idea. Same for K-Rod. No team would trade a used jock strap for Matt Garza. He doesn't have zero value he has negative value. He might have value in 2016 if he can become an effective pitcher again, but his 2015 is complete washout.
  18. While I love the idea of a Jamesian Relief Ace who comes in at the most crucial point of the game, it's not as easy to implement as it is to write. It takes time to warm up a pitcher, and often a manager wouldn't have his relief ace ready to go when the magic moment were to arrive. Plus, a manager can't be constantly dry humping his relief pitchers by getting them up and down throughout the game and not using them.
  19. When Carlos was playing for the Brewers I never minded his bat flips or finger pointing or any other show of emotion. I hated his senseless base running though. I was watching the Yankees-Astros game live when this happened (MLB Network) and I thought the Yankees were the ones out of line. Carlos just told them to shut up (three times) after they started barking at him and the Yankees are the ones who ran onto the field.
  20. He won't play even one season beyond his current contract. The answer is no.
  21. Had the Brewer game on the radio recently. Uecker's voice was so bad I had to turn it off. How can they let him call games like that?
  22. I want the next Theo Epstein. Although I grew up in Wisconsin I was a Marine stationed in Rhode Island in 1999 and picked up a very bad Red Sox habit. I have followed Theo Epstein since day 1 of his GM career and I am firmly convinced that his philosophies are the way to build a winning baseball team. And for the record, Theo has always preached a balance between analytics and traditional scouting.
  23. 10 cent beer night. Every night.
  24. Dombrowski is not coming to Milwaukee to be nit picked by Doug Melvin. I'd put my money on the Blue Jays or Angels getting him.
