  1. Welcome, indeed! Hope to see you on the boards!
  2. Amen. My wife, with 15 years experience and a master's degree makes $2,000 more than I do with my B.A. And I finally cracked the $30k level last year with 12 years of experience. We can't all be blessed to teach in rich school districts, thus many teachers that I know have to take a summer job to make ends meet. Maybe this isn't a regular occurrence in Wisconsin but it most definitely is in other parts of the country that does not value education the same way as the midwest. And I like to say that I received a "calling" to teach, rather than choose it.
  3. All I said was that it wasn't for me. It wouldn't be fun for me. If it works for you and your family, that's splendid.
  4. I'm not sure about all these pictures, but I've never been a fan of the pumpkin "design" kits that are out there. It just makes the pumpkin carving too easy. I guess I'm old school. I usually plan out what I want on a small scrap of paper and I start cutting. I'd love to use the back of a round-headed kid's head for a model, though. I tried a kit once. You tape the picture the pumpkin, poke holes through the paper and into the pumpkin, and then carve it up in a dot-to-dot pattern. I just don't get the fun in that.
  5. Good for Mac, I kind of miss seeing the guy around. Of course, I'll probably laugh pretty hysterically if he is anything close to "scrawny" compared to what he used to look like.
  6. A bit off the topic of tips, etc. but I know this is a statement that bugs me. A lot. I know I'm taking this out of context, and I'm not attacking you, homer, but this statement by so many people about teachers and summers "off" is a joke, joke, joke, joke, joke. There are plenty of teachers (I would guess most teachers, actually) that work over the summer. This is the only time of the year, really, that teachers can take classes to get re-certified. This is the time that of the year that many invest in teaching summer school. This is the time of the year that teachers, just coming off a completed school year, begin working on planning for the upcoming school year (my wife is big on this one.) And I know tons of teachers who have to take a summer job (pizza delivery, grocery store deli, etc.) just to make ends meet, since, you know, we don't really get paid over the summer. Sure, there are probably some teachers that treat the summer as their lazy bum time and do nothing during the summer. But that is quite the exception, I'm sure of it. Anyway, rant over. Back to tips.
  7. so this is just in store or online, too? Is it just for consoles or will PC games be included?
  8. I think the writers chose to use the whole duck (Dwight: Mallard!) thing the way they did instead of hijinx and shenanigans is two-fold. (a) Jim is a boss now and is trying to be a little more "above" doing that. (b) Jim was already having a bad enough day with Michael's announcement at lunch, on his first day back in the office. I agree that the old Jim character would have had a field day with it. I like how they seem to be "changing" Jim's character a bit this season.
  9. This thread is starting to show small signs of tension and emotions getting high. The discussion about tips is fine, but please don't make things (or take things) personal. Thank you.
  10. I didn't see any of the 7th inning. I was watching "The Office" and then I check the score and the Yanks are up. That just sucks.
  11. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n116/pitchleague/IMG_2030.jpg this is our Pumpkin family from last year. We always do something "corny" like this and get lots of compliments from people. We'll do this year's probably next Friday night and then I'll post them.
  12. very well done, but what do you have burning inside that is so gosh darn bright? It looks like the entire inside of the pumpkin is on fire like in Hades or something. edit: ah, also, isn't it a bit early to be carving them? Two weeks to go; they'd be mush here on the 31st if I did it this early.
  13. CC gets out of the 8th inning. The fans are going "nuts," "chanting" his name and making "a lot" of noise. Maybe it's the production values or something else, but I swear that (a) the fans were much more rowdy in Milwaukee last year when he pitched, and (b) CC was much more pumped to be playing in Milwaukee than he is in New York. Or, now that he's a big-shot Yankee, he "has" to play more under-control with less emotion as it was a ho-hum 8th inning. Regardless, I still hate the Yankees. And FOX.
  14. And this time I'm on homer's side. It was a let down from last week, for me. I laughed out loud a couple of times but that was it. Was the story good? Sure. It just didn't make me laugh as much as last week. Like somebody above stated, it fluctuates every episode and you have to be in the right mind to "get" the type of humor offered in each episode. I kind of went in to tonight's episode and expected to be let down compared to last week and it "self-fulfilled" a bit for me. I'll try to re-watch it tomorrow night after a few (many?) beers and it might "do it" for me at that time.
  15. I think Chip Carey just tried to blow my television speakers on that Manny HR call. I can understand if it was the bottom of the 9th or something, but this was the freakin' 5th inning. Come on, audio guy, turn his mic down when he starts yelling. It's called "balancing" for a reason.
  16. This whole story is kind of strange. Why does the family have this balloon tied up outside their house? Why does it have a "basket" that is basically made of plywood and would barely survive a landing? I kind of walked into this story in the school office and now I see it posted here, so I'm not fully understanding, even after reading the CNN article.
  17. a DAYTIME Championship Series game????? I didn't think that kind of thing was allowed anymore. I know they do for the LDS but not the LCS! I'm guessing it's only because the game is out in LA?
  18. I'll be honest: I've never heard of this super volcano theory. Got any good links that I should read? The basic search I did didn't turn up all that much that was note-worthy or interesting, to me at least.
  19. In our district in AZ, we had the day off (Fall Break Day). It was nice sitting around the house on a Monday again.
  20. I'm pretty sure they discussed the scoreboard upgrade on television during the last homestand. Mark said something to the effect that it would be done hopefully for the 2011 season. So it doesn't look like an upgrade on that for this season.
  21. Cardinals get knocked out. Red Sox get knocked out. This keeps getting better and better.
  22. St. Louis, buh-bye! That was great television!
  23. regardless of the call, the Twins had bases loaded with nobody out and failed to score. Even though, we have seen that multitudinal times as Brewer fans, the Twins are supposed to "thrive" in situations like that as a small ball team. But the next two batters both swing at the first pitch from Robertson. Unbelievable. Unless you're a Brewer fan.
  24. I'm not a Twins "fan" at all, but I despise the Yankees, so I'll be bitterly disappointed if the Twins can't win this game.
  25. I will agree that Community has become better since that first awful episode, but the thing that bugs me is it's more like "real" college/university life rather than a community college. I've never been on a CC campus that has all the stuff they do on this show. Maybe it's just California or based on one of those "larger" Jucos or something.
