  1. Great get by the Reds. Brice by BBA has turned in to a nice BP arm. Straily's Fip was 4.88. Due to the HR's but his ERA beat it due to his career best or tying Hit/9 and BB/9 So all these career best/worst probably even back out a little. Less HR, more hits, more bbs. Higher ERA but lower Fip. Either way, this guy simply is a #4 if not 5 SP. Guerra most certainly has higher trade value than Straily did. Guerra had 26.2 additional IP in Colorado Springs in which he had 6.1 Hits/9 8.4 Ks/9 only 2HRs allowed. 4.05 ERA surprisingly for what great he did. He is not a #4 or 5 moving forward in value and has more team control.
  2. There are often ST pitchers who throws pitches they are working on or developing since these are meaningless games. But showing some repetitions and in game throws to maybe dabble with the pitch more often during the season. But to me, yes he is a Opening Day SP and not a BP or CS potential. How would he not be Opening Day SP? His FB being 4MPH slower than normal would be cause of alarm to then send him down and see what's going on.
  3. Gray has barely over 1 year of service. At the moment he's not to be a free agent until after 2022. I'm going to guess based on his time he would need just 45days roughly to gain a year of control but become a Super 2. According to BR.com he has just over 3 years of service time (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grayso01.shtml) and according to Spotrac he is arbitration eligible through 2019 before becoming a FA (http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/oakland-athletics/sonny-gray-14331/). Perhaps you were confusing him with Jon Gray? (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grayjo02.shtml) Yes that is who I said to which the reply. Jonathon Gray or I guess should put Jon. As my example using a crystal ball how to get the #3 that can pitch low end #1 possibility next year. Predicting Colorado could use 1 of our premium OF prospects in the deal. Vs. the idea of a FA sign after the next season. Reread the original posting.
  4. Gray has barely over 1 year of service. At the moment he's not to be a free agent until after 2022. I'm going to guess based on his time he would need just 45days roughly to gain a year of control but become a Super 2.
  5. The problem to me is cost. Arrieta and those top guys bring to much risk for the cost. You sink in 18-25mil...Arrieta is probably a 30-34mil pitcher but after him, you sink around 20mil and suggesting Milw is a 120mil payroll moving forward. 1 shoulder/elbow injury on that investment is taking 1/6 or better a team's payroll. You move to types that you consider potential 2s but most likely #3s. That's a problem then because we are loaded with most likely #3s who will cost Pre-Arb salaries but now you block them. Clearly, at some point the talent depth will exceed the need on 25man roster. How do you solve that? You trade for a Pitcher that is a #3 with potential of low #1 while he's below 18million a year cost. Let's crystal ball this and say it's someone like Jonathon Gray of Colorado. A guy who's ERA is bloated pitching at Coors but moving away from Coors creates him reaching his ceiling over the floor there. I mean at some point you expect the guys who on draft or signing day as huge talents approach showing off those talents. I'm speaking Lara, Harrison, Gatewood, Clark, Phillips, Medeiros, Nathan Kirby, The two Williams. It'll become Lara/Gatewood/Erceg? Broxton/Brinson/Ray/Phillips/Clark/Harrison? And I'm sure I'm ignoring 2 or 3. Villar/Arcia/Diaz/Dubon to start MIF. This will be where Stearns makes his GM statement. How he trades away the talent and for what? Let's give Santana and Broxton reaching their ceilings. You are stuck with Brinson/Phillips/Ray/Clark to trade away. with 2 being left behind to fill Braun and 5th OF. At this moment that is 4 among top 65 on MLB.com. and you can only have 2. See, I think what will happen is Stearns and co. figure out who is the highest ceiling among these guys and stick to them and seek other talents. Villar/Broxton/Santana just may be it. Which if the case drafting Ray, may have been the shiny high floor type we boo about on ceiling and plan all along is tradebait. Now Colorado atop their OF prospects don't happen to have one. Sure they graduated Dahl and Tapia but that doesn't make them deep at OF for 2017 and beyond. So a Ray or Brinson trade offer could get us that SP without spending FA money. And not for a second regret the loss since there are better OFs already in place or coming.
  6. Yeah no chance Shaw hits higher than 6th. Broxton, Villar, Braun, Thames or Santana, Santana or Thames. Maybe only when a couple of these guys are out of the lineup.
  7. Henson has really hurt this team in the last two games I watched. He gets in position on offense around the free throw line which is a passing spot to move the ball in/out or dribble/drive. But he's just so damn sluggish, Parker must have had 5 TOs trying to pass to him in these 2 games. And then it's the fact he's a poor shot the occasional times he took them. He needs to sit along the OB line near the basket with Offensive board maneuvers or be the one making picks. Not someone who handles the ball. Having him in the game at the same time as Snell or Vaughn really clogs the offensive ability. Oh and Delly really gets exposed as a mismatch in athleticism. Terry has gotten too many minutes the last 2 games. I think when the team is facing bigs that cause problems, they just need to rotate Plumlee, Monroe, Henson and Teletovic or Maker and foul that big alot forcing him to make free throws. Meanwhile, if you're sitting Giannis or Parker or Brogdon, the extra minutes you delay the game mean you can leave them on the court for longer stretches. At some point you hope with the duo of Giannis or Parker dribble driving create a foul problem for that big mismatch.
  8. I think this move is a year to early. I'd consider it though if you parted with Nelson or Peralta or even Anderson to lessen the prospect impact. They will have a need for some sort of innings eater. I'd certainly have no problems with parting with Ray seeing as I think he was a weak pick. It's not like Sonny Gray was a late 1st rounder or worse draft pick himself. He was top half w/o looking. I'd then probably sell them on Devin Williams or Ryan Cordell.
  9. On January 19, 2009, Capers was named the Green Bay Packers defensive[3] Green Bay's defensive ranking in his first year improved to second in the league in 2009, from 21st in the league in 2008. And gave up 537 yards to Pitt wk 15. 531 to Arz in Playoffs On September 12, 2010, Capers' defense finished the season ranked 2nd in scoring defense, 5th in total defense, 2nd in interceptions, 2nd in sacks On February 6, 2011, Capers lead a 5th ranked defensive squad and helped the Packers win the Super Bowl. During the playoff run his team had a pick 6 in the final 3 playoff games that year; Divisional Round (Williams), Championship game (Raji), and in Super Bowl 45 (Collins.) Super Bowl team On September 8, 2011, Capers began the year where he would watch his defense finish in the bottom of the barrel after finishing 5th the prior year. Since 2011 his defensive rankings on yards per game have been ranked: 2011 – 32nd-ranked defense, 2012 – 11th, 2013 – 25th, 2014 – 15th, 2015 – 15th and now 2016 – currently ranked 18th after giving up 4 straight games of 30 or more points. 2011-worst 2012-4 games over 400yards allowed including 579! to Colin Kapernick and SF in oust of Playoffs 7 games of 375+ allowed. Joe Philbin was announced Miami HC Prior to that season 2013- I dunno how not worst to rank 25th. 7games over 400yds 2014- 4 games over 400yds. Playoff game 397. 3 total games below 300yards 1 of them 299. 2015- 4 games again over 400yds-2 500 or more. 4 of last 5 games over 350yards 368 in Playoff loss. 2016- Incredibly 8! games over 400yards 5more at 350+. Put it this way. Name a big game the defense came up huge. Not giving up over 275 yards in that game. I am looking and the Super Bowl team had week 17 vs Chi. 2nd round playoff game vs Atl surprisingly but see there was 4 TO by them 2int, 2 fumbles. That team had Woodson, Harris, Collins, Matthews, Hawk and Burnett. Quite the nice inherit. After 2010, no Harris, Barnett, and lost Collins game 2. Defense never the same
  10. Why not? Your own research proved Thompson has drafted horribly on the defensive side of the ball- especially front 7. Neal, Worthy, Thornton, Jones, good luck. Go back a couple more years and it gets worse. Spending all these top draft choices and producing bottom 10 defensively year in, year out. Regardless who is drafted for Capers his defenses get destroyed year in year out. The Patriots have been solid on both sides of the ball while losing draft picks, finishing top 2 in AFC year in, year out. so whats the answer to why? How about Capers, not the players/talent on the field.
  11. It seems like we go hard on defense in almost EVERY draft. The last 5 first round picks were on defense (and 7 of the last 9). I could be wrong (and I'm too lazy to go back and add it all up), but it sure seems like if you look at the first 3-4 rounds of the draft, it's been way more defensive players than offensive. The problem is...a lot of them haven't developed into very good players. Or as others have said, Ted is drafting who he wants, regardless if they fit what Capers actually wants to do on defense That Cowboys line made up of 3 1st rounders and a 4th with I'd guess an UDFA. This is what I mean in post above, Capers' defense has to be being drafted for. Since the SB top 3 picks by Pack: 2010: T Bulaga, DE Neal, DB Burnett 2011: Loser T Sherrod, WR Cobb, RB Green Not complaining on T picks here when you realize Rodgers' ability. I don't think Bulaga helped much for 4 years and only the last 2.5 has he started living up to the pick. 4th pick Davon House 2012: LB/DE Nick Perry, DT Worthy, CB Hayward, Mike Daniels 4th The start of Capers draft needs. 2013: LB/DE Datone Jones, RB Lacy, 4th round T Bakhtairy 2014: DB Ha-Ha, WR Adams, DT Khyri Thornton? Have no recollection of this guy. 2015: DB Randall, DB Rollins, WR Montgomery, Ryan 4th 2016: DT Clark, T Spriggs, LB/DE Fackrell...Martinez 4th. 7year total: 12 of 21 top 3 picks Defensive with 4 of last 6 4th pick defensive. The 4th picks have been better than the 1st round picks. You can't sit there and say Capers needs players. They have obviously focused drafts to help his scheme. The Hybrid DE/LB types in Jones/Perry. DBs and DT. Based on BJKraut's post on the makeup of the defense the team is better off drafting later on defensive backs. They've hit on every WR drafted in 1st 3 rounds though certainly Rodgers helps improve their talent. Just some brutal names missed on the picks. Landon Collins vs Randall. Alec Ogletree or Travis Frederick vs Datone Jones. About half the picks to Worthy over Perry including Bobby Wagner. Dix is a win compared to much what was drafted after him. Clark is too early to declare, especially being so young but we did pass a lot of intriguing names off to solid starts this rookie season
  12. I don't think Capers is to blame for bad defensive backs and linebackers that can't cover. That's on Thompson. Well, I believe the team drafts players to fit the scheme Capers wants. What I have to say, I can't figure out how Ha-ha is a Pro Bowler. So many of the deep passes over 20yards he's nowhere in the picture...for a safety? And that to me is part of Capers scheme. How often has his defenses been burned. Seem to always give up 300yards+ in any big game, like this one. As to Matthews, he's slower, aged that's clear. That's why he's not coming up on the stats much anymore. So many times this season, he's 1step away on his pressure which he wouldn't been a season or more ago. If GB hadn't jumped out to their lead, Dallas would have womped us. But by being ahead 2 or 3 scores, they ran less. I seriously mouthed every time their Offensive line was 3yards passed the line of scrimmage getting up on Dallas run plays. Packers' line, always at the line of scrimmage. 3 Tackles for loss-the 2 sacks, and Kenny Clark's run down on a screen play. Not 1 on a run play. They had 6 with 3 sacks. Do gotta hand it to Brice and Gunter how far they've come since that 4game losing streak to now. I'm surprised they give Gunter so much time man to man coverage. Or maybe they don't and Dix misses his assignment. I just get baffled how many times passed 17yards and no one is further back to help, literally leaving the CBs on an island. I just don't understand the scheme Capers is playing. Anyway, To Atlanta we go! Rodgers I think has his best rushing games when in Atlanta. I expect another 50+ day for him rushing with 5 or 6 heartbreaking 1st down runs crushing Atlanta's D.
  13. When did Howard return to his Young 20s? I guess that Sefolosha character had quite a bit to do with the D down low. Helps Howard is free to literally jab to the face and not get called for fouls. That game was weird, as I think they jumped out to like a 16pt lead. Then they put Delly/Vaughn/Beasley with Giannis/Parker sharing time 1 on floor the other on bench vice versa over a 7-8min span. Jason Terry was on the floor in that span. It was clank city suddenly. Parker was key in the beginning and when he returned he wasn't important on the floor anymore and I feel he was the Buck needed to exploit Atlanta. Oh and Mike Dunleavy Jr. outmatched Beasley all over. Henson looked like a Monroe slow while Monroe looked Henson speed earlier in season. Henson just can't matchup vs Atlanta and this is where Maker could come in play. Standing out at the 3pt line and respecting that would force 1 of Howard or Sefolosha away from the rim, or allow Maker to shoot 3s. Parker is very impressive to me in moments. Just has to rein his choices to shoot or pass. He got a number of them wrong in the game, shooting at poor/bad spots or passing on great dribble penetration vs the finish. A number of his passes were unexpected/not in shooting positions and passes around get a poor shot. Really, this game I think it comes with the scheduling. Kinda poor to have home on Friday night/away in Atlanta sunday afternoon and now back home today for game. I think with the playing time given to Vaughn/Terry and such in between 1st/2nd quarters was Kidd coaching for today's game. Terry had his worst 3pt shooting game I'd seen, I'm surprised looking at stats it was just 1-3 I felt like he missed 5. Just an off game, Brogdon didn't even post an assist.
  14. About trade and getting a piece. We're getting so deep, I don't care to try getting a mediocre return on Feliz. Think, more like Lucroy in that the inclusion of Feliz nets a real talent....I don't think Brinson or maybe Ortiz is offered back w/o Jeffress. The player that jumps out at you would be Hernan Perez with Feliz. The clearest example on what a trade could be for Feliz alone can be KRod, since we traded him twice. Nick Delmonico 1st, Javier Betancourt/Manny Pina 2nd. I'm not comparing the two pitching styles, just results. I think for a rental, a GM seeks that. They don't care if the FB is 100 or 88. The team lost 3 relievers. Replacing 1 outside the organization, still leaves 2 spots to fill in with inside the organization. And in Feliz, they have a veteran presence with Post Season experience. Who has had big time success as well as failing. So maybe within the bullpen he can bring some calm or reassurance coaches just don't give them.
  15. Wasn't there a notation when signing Thames, that adding a LH bat was important to add to the lineup?
  16. I gotta say, Brogdon is so perfect for this team. Because he's never going to be the star and he plays that way. Meanwhile Giannis and Parker are forging so much Star 1, Star 2 that if Brogdon were more the type like Cassell or Payton, It'd mess with the focus on offense. Just get to the playoffs, 5game/7game series vs any team is going to be a battle. Gotta be the scariest team forthcoming with gained experience. Making Brogdon a starter, and Delly off the bench sets up great. Its so great to finally have some belief in Milw. Hadnt had since the Conference final team with Cassel, Thomas, Allen, Robinson.
  17. No, defenseless is illegal. He was in the air. The fact he was near the OB line confirms the viscous intent to injury with his approach to spear Nelson. A simple push at 1/8 the impact speed would have taken Nelson out of bounds. If even needed at al...body going out bounds on its own. Not a play on the ball, straight spear tackle on a defenseless WR. Head first, hands not. I literally said Broken ribs the first slow motion replay.
  18. I see nothing wrong with the signing if/when it happens. MLBTR gave a shout out to BF.net and Jim Goulhart. Wonder how many check out the site, maybe join with the little bit of extra exposure. Kneble and Blazek were types when traded for to be closer potentials, but both didn't give the safe feeling to be. Barnes just seemed to inexperienced to be awarded the job. I'm better with having either as setup and play in to a closer role with some more experience to decide which is better to place in the role. Feliz hasn't reached 60+IP since 2011 season, so there's strong chance Barnes or Kneble will get some closer chances even if we keep Feliz all season. This certainly makes the bullpen more predictable and I'd assume more likely to return to 73wins vs. a 65 win season.
  19. Ha! I clicked the little tab that takes me to last post read. It was the July 20th post, but seeing the Nelson thread pop up atop the thread I thought it was the newest post when it took me to that post. Whoops.
  20. Well, Holland made 8.25million last year. So Id think he'd assert that value on himself. Especially if he's being given an option year only for the team. Brett Anderson, McCarthy deals by the Dodgers sorta creates tha t within reason for a high asking price. I thought Id seen a suggested 2/20 in comment section when Mlbtr posted he wanted an Opt-out but the article didn't refer to that, so I'm unsure if that is true.
  21. Straight up I would believe Boston still hangs up the phone. Isn't Kopech hitting high 90s? Late last season? I believe Nelson's value is below what it can be with a productive 2017. It'd take an offer like Kopech to move him But, i dont find Boston's need for what Nelson has done.
  22. Considering we're year 1plus, im going to go with imitating. Behind the trend since Houston, Cubs, Philly, San Diego, Atlanta, Minnesota, Tampa, even Cincy had starts to Rebuilds before Milw committed. Toronto had a year 4years? Back when they claimed everyone! We're still a cpl years before you can even dictate what Stearns trend is. But I just feel it's imitating, but at a whole level. Not to 1 franchise's way. If/when he signs a FA that is significant more will be revealed what his trend is. What if he's a Ted Thompson who never splashes in FA? In that regard, he'll be like Tampa, but Tampa moves players that you wouldnt expect. We didnt do a big July international signing and now the rules are different, what happens this July? If/when does he make a trade, splash of a premium ML player? Talking the type we give a top 3 prospect+ to get this player. How patient will he be to see this rebuild through. Seeing how he handles Gennett, Nelson, Peralta, and Braun. Brinson,Hader. Ask this again after the Trade deadline. If not after this season.
  23. I dont like the mutual option, because Im sure year 1 will have to expensive. 8-9mill. It falls in the no-win category for Milw. Hes bad, you dont pick up the option, get nothing in return but a bad overpaid year. If he's good, he passes on that option. QO is doubtful, talking 17mil+ if accepts. And with his age, id be very surprised he got a deal 60mil+ to get the better comp...but im probably remembering wrongly. Just a long waiting game.
  24. So Nelson ruled out. Somehow the Giant Defender who hit Jordy not fined. I think its time Montgomery returned to WR#2 Michael at RB.
  25. Much of the long developing pass plays this is true. The Line isn't as good as outsiders believe. They see a 5-7sec pass play completion by Rodgers and think that happens more often than not. I will give credit to the line in that they know and do a great job to pass-block longer than 3 or 4secs, which you see many other teams' OL kinda quit. The way Rodgers eludes DEs the game must just move so slow for him in his mind. So often he perfectly escapes the pocket going around the end about to put pressure on him. Especially the blitzers that fast oncoming rush he side steps and eludes out away from. The Giants early on kept a good triangle as they pushed on their rush. Rather than 1 side being further up field creating an opening, they just closed in equally and Rodgers was hit and sacked what was it 4sacks/7hits? before their 1st TD? After that initial great defense, that triangle got wider and worse timing on the pressure. Rodgers did what he does and dominated after that. Say we beat Dallas. Which team would you hope to face?
