  1. The success rate for 5-7 year free agent contracts at 100 million plus dollars is extremely low. I think the Brewers and other small market teams have a built in advantage of not being able to sign past their prime players to ridiculous contracts to play out their decline years. Some people act like the Braun contract is a dead weight around the team's neck and he never even makes 20 million in a single season. I'd hate to think what would have happened had the Brewers been in a place to match or top Detroit's 9/214 offer to Fielder.
  2. It's not just Yo. The top ten Brewers in fWAR during the Melvin era are Braun, Sheets, Fielder, Gallardo, Gomez, Weeks, Lucroy, Hart, Jenkins and Hardy. Outside of Lucroy everyone on that list has gotten plenty of grief on BF.NET (& elsewhere on the interwebs) over the years. Apparently a percentage of fans think even the best players on their favorite team are terrible.
  3. Lorenzo Cain last 2 years : 278/325/383 Carlos Gomez last 2 years : 284/347/491 Alcides Escobar last 2 years : 259/288/337 Jean Segura last 2 years : 272/310/378 Odorizzi had a nice year. The main reason he had a nice year is because he finally learned an out pitch from Alex Cobb which he never would have learned had he not been traded by the Brewers (and the Royals). Without that newly learned out pitch he is a stalled out prospect with no way to consistently put away major league hitters. I see no reason for even mild depression reflecting upon consummated baseball trades, but maybe I'm a little biased because I have a cache of exhilirating memories from watching the Brewers win their division for the first time in my adult life during the summer of 2011.
  4. It's awesome that Brantley broke out six years after being traded, but I'll take the memories of CC and the summer of 2008 myself. He would've been a nice fourth outfielder from 2010-13 I guess. Same with Lo Cain. I always enjoyed following both players coming up but they were moved because the outfield was full so that depth was traded for areas that were lacking. I believe we won the division with Greinke in 2011. I'm also happy it was Brantley that went to Cleveland because Lucroy was one of the other PTBNL candidates and that would have been a true loss.
  5. Brewers position players ranked 12th in MLB in OBP, oddly enough in a dead even tie with Oakland, so I'm not sure how OAK is doing something right and MIL is turning a blind eye considering the numbers are exactly the same.
  6. In 2010 the Rangers went to the World Series and lost with the 27th largest payroll in MLB. In 2011 the Rangers went to the World Series and lost with the 13th largest payroll in MLB. In 2012 the Rangers lost in the wild card game with 6th largest payroll in MLB. The last two years the Rangers have missed the playoffs with the 8th & 11th largest payrolls in MLB. Being able to spend money is good, but knowing how to spend it is better. If you don't have all that much money and you aren't really sure of the best way to spend what little you have...Hi Doug! Good Luck!
  7. So division winners spent the 4th (BAL), 1st (DET), 1st (LAA), 2nd (WAS), 2nd (STL) and 1st (LAD) most to win their respective divisions. Including the wildcards the postseason teams ranked 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 13th, 15th, 19th, 23rd and 27th in overall payroll. The Brewers spent 8 million less in payroll than the Cardinals, is that 8 million what separates them as franchises or is it their ability to identify & develop talent?
  8. Between walking the lead off guy in the 12th, not blocking that pitch in the dirt to keep the runner from advancing to third following the sacrifice to giving up the go ahead single; Ned Yost has really killed the Royals this inning.
  9. 2012 was a PED-free Braun. Minor quibble. Braun did not fail any tests in 2012, that does not necessarily mean he was PED free.
  10. DMGM took over following the 2002 season. In the 3 seasons prior to his arrival Milwaukee lost 289 games, 2nd most in all of MLB. In 2005 the Brewers finished 81-81, their first non-losing season in 12 years. In the 10 years from 2005 through today the Brewers have gone 819-794 giving them the 11th best record in MLB over that time frame, essentially tied with Tampa Bay at 819-795. The 10 teams from 2005-14 with better records than MIL have been NYY, LAA, STL, BOS, PHI, DET, ATL, LAD, OAK (836-775) & TEX. All large market/rich teams with the exception of OAK. During the last 10 years under Melvin, Milwaukee teams have performed on par with TB & slightly worse (less than 2 wins per season) than OAK, two franchises who are held up as the ideally run small market teams. A "sad franchise"? Did I accidentally wander onto padrefan.net?
  11. I agree that the depth is great to have with Parra, just not sure if he will want to go into his walk year slotted as a 4th outfielder. I'd imagine he'll do & say all the right things the rest of this year while we are in contention but will be asked to be traded or released once the offseason hits if we can't guarantee a starting job for 2015.
  12. I don't see how not having confidence to use a left handed long reliever/mop up guy would increase the usage of your right handed set up man.
  13. Since his first full season in 2007 Tulo has played in 936 of 1296 possible games, or 72.2%. He's got 6 years and 118 million remaining on his contract.
  14. In the minors he had 1,042 plate appearances vs. righties and 477 vs. lefties. So a little over 2-1 ratio of R vs. L. In the majors he has had 502 plate appearances vs. righties and 79 vs. lefties. So a little over a 6-1 ratio of R vs. L. The reason his major league numbers are better is precisely because of how heavily he has been platooned. His overall minor league numbers were dragged down by a higher ratio of PA's against lefties.
  15. You're right that is better than what Segura has done this year. The difference is Segura did that against major league pitching, Scooter's numbers came against minor league pitching. That's a pretty big distinction. His current major league OPS against lefties is 307 in an admittedly small sample. I'd hope he can get better because it would be hard to get much worse. Very best case scenario he could maybe match his minor league numbers against lefties at some point down the road in the majors. I'd rather just platoon him myself and take the better production.
  16. The main reason Scooter has exceeded so many people's expectations is precisely because he has been heavily platooned to protect him from lefties.
  17. So you dismiss 74 ABs as a small sample (which it clearly is), but then use an even smaller sample to try and prove your point? Ok. Lets's take the largest sample available, 255/294/349 in 477 minor league plate appearances in the minor leagues does not bode well for success against lefties in the major leagues.
  18. If you want a larger sample check Scooter's minor league splits. 255/294/349 in 477 plate appearances.
  19. The three best hitters in the NL last year were Goldschmidt, Votto and McCutchen. Goldschmidt & Votto are both first basemen who play in hitter's parks. McCutchen is a centerfielder who plays in a pitcher's park. He also had the best narrative with Pittsburgh making their first postseason in forever. I think the voters got it right. Braun will never win another MVP because even if he puts up the requisite numbers the writers will likely assume he's on something again.
  20. Turbo, we always park East of the stadium just off of Canal St in front of the Palermo's Pizza factory. Looking at google maps it looks like Roundhouse Rd is the name of the street. There's always spots and it's a 15-20 minute walk in. I went to a game at AT&T recently and the ushers in the lower level had signs saying something along the lines of "as a courtesy to other fans please wait, batter in box". You'd think people would know this but common sense ain't so common anymore. I've started calling it uncommon sense, myself.
  21. The thirty extra innings pitched probably helped too.
  22. I know it's fashionable to hate on Chris Carpenter around these parts, but he also won the Cy Young that year. Are Cy Young awards useless too then?
  23. I always enjoyed Ned's postgame pressers. I can see it now; Royals/Brewers World Series, Royals win, Brewerfan explodes the internetz.
