  1. The only number that the front office truly cared about this season was 3,000,000. As such, no matter the hypothetical return, Prince was not going to be traded this past offseason.
  2. So with all the hoopla about this years draft I thought it might be interesting to go back and take a look at the pitchers selected between Arnett/Heckathorn in 2009. Now I know it's far too early to make any definitive conclusions about any of these guys based off of two months of minor league stats, but I thought the results were at least interesting enough for possible discussion. This is extremely quick and dirty (not to mention poorly formatted), but here goes... PICK | NAME | AGE | LEVEL | ERA | WHIP | BB9 | K9 26 | Arnett | 22 | A | 7.11 | 1.56 | 3.2 | 6.836 | Miller | 22 | A+ | 3.12 | 1.30 | 4.7 | 8.940 | Skaggs | 18 | A | 2.55 | 1.06 | 1.7 | 9.342 | Richards | 22 | A | 3.33 | 1.21 | 2.6 | 8.643 | Boxberger | 22 | A+ | 3.20 | 1.23 | 2.7 | 9.944 | Scheppers | 22 | AA | 3.32 | 1.47 | 5.2 | 9.545 | Belfiore | 21 | A | 2.67 | 1.31 | 3.6 | 8.5 So the six pitchers drafted (not so) immediately after Arnett have all had decidedly better results to this point. The Scheppers story is pretty well known, but does anyone know if any of these other names were linked to the Brewers as a possibility at pick 26 last year?
  3. I'm happy with the Covey pick. The more or less consensus top high school arm in California is fine with me. Keep pounding HS pitching and eventually your number will come up. But then again I still believe in Rogers and Jeffress and play the lottery every week.
  4. I agree that Gomez's line in a vacuum is nothing to get excited about, but you say all you want to see is improvement and at this point his triple slash numbers are all improvements over the best he's ever posted in any single season. If you're unhappy with the degree of improvement than i guess all you can do is give the guy more time.
  5. Obviosuly Gomez needs to show more improvement to be considered an elite MLB CF but at this point he has put up his best triple slash numbers to this point in the bigs and is still only 24 years young. WRITE HIM OFF
  6. All we're competing for at this point is probably a better draft pick.
  7. So you were expecting him to outperform his past three year averages all while getting a year older and coming to a more hitter friendly home park with an inferior defense behind him? Maybe your expectations were just too high to begin with.
  8. If Ranaudo is there I'd roll the dice. All pitchers get hurt so you might as well get it out of the way right out of the gun, er no?
  9. Blue Velvet and Easy Rider come instantly to mind, but if you haven't seen his two episode search for the elusive giant squid with John Lurie in Fishing With John you haven't seen the brilliance of the "real life" Dennis Hopper. What a celebrity threesome to go running round the afterlife with...Arnold, Blanche and Frank Booth.
  10. Another question along those same lines would be how long after his firing did it take them to get back to being a competitive MLB franchise ?
  11. Pitching wins championships and the Braves won one in fifteen tries with the big three. Look at first round over the last ten years and how many flameouts there are. Mike Jones was drafted ten years ago and still hasn't thrown a pitch in the bigs. And guess what? Neither have ten of the other nineteen hurlers picked in the first round that year. Has Melvin tried to acquire pitching? Certainly. Has it worked? Certainly not. How much of that blame we can assign to Doug, Jack Z, luck and/or various pitching coaches/scouts in the organization is impossible to determine.
  12. And Mariners fans probably never thought they'd have three players like Johnson, Griffey and Rodriguez again. And then they won 116 games. And got bounced in the playoffs. What a game.
  13. Club officials have said Gamel would have had a very good chance to make the big league team in Spring Training if not for the injury. That line in the Gamel piece really threw me into quite a zim-zam. I mean, really? He would have had a good chance to make the big league club and do what exactly? Take Inglett's roster spot and 16 pinch hit appearances? Really? Start the two games at third that Counsell has this year? Really? Play the six innings of first base that Edmonds and Kottaras have gotten late in blowouts so he could practice for next year? Really? REALLY?
  14. total bummerfest. once again raises the question, why again did we draft joe alexander over brook lopez?
  15. Per Cot's... $2.3M signing bonus08:$0.455M, 09:$0.745M, 10:$1M, 11:$4M, 12:$6M, 13:$8.5M, 14:$10M, 15:$12Mmay earn additional $6M if Braun qualifies as a Super 2 after 2009 season (increasing salaries to: 10:$3.5M, 11:$5.5M, 12:$7.5M, 13:$9M)If Braun continues to hit and progress as he has I'd say he could have pretty easily doubled those arby salaries and hit free agency in 2014 coming into his age 30 season which would have put him in line for a six or seven year deal at upwards of 20 million per. So with some quick and dirty math I'd say he potentially left about 30 to 35 million on the table over the course of the contract. I'm curious how much young talent a team like the Rays or Rangers would throw our way for probably the second best deal in the entire MLB market.
  16. Not having to watch Hardy "run" down the first base line. I will slightly miss praying for a blooper or HBP during every Kendall plate appearance, but I'm sure Gregg Zaun's walk up music will more than compensate for that. www.greggzaun.com
  17. Macha was posed that question the other day and he said it would be difficult not to use an eight-time Gold Glove center fielder in center field. Thats from the latest McCalvey mailbag. Why would Edmonds who posted -1.8 and -14.1 in 2007 and 2008 (at least he was at 0.0 in 2009) in CF over Gerut who has posted a 5.8 and 1.8 in 2008 and 2009? Oh yeah, and he's seven years younger. And played in the Major Leagues last year. I mean Griffey has a boatload of Gold Gloves too, maybe Wakamatsu will write him in at CF when Gutierrez needs a day off.
  18. I would guess maybe Villanueva if they want to stretch him out or possibly one of Jones or Cody perhaps?
  19. I didn't like the Edmonds move from day one for a few reasons. One, the Cardinal aspect. Two, with the four outfielders we had as givens to make the team our 5th OF should have a pretty minimal role throughout the year. Three, Edmonds has always been a starter or at least the lefty half of a platoon so he is not accustomed to that role despite his veteran status in a way that maybe a Gabe Kapler was. With the way the OF is currently set up I'd give Gerut a start a week each in CF and RF against better righties. Braun certainly isn't coming out for defense or a pinch runner and neither would any of Gerut, Gomez or Hart most likely as the marginal gain is almost negligble. That leaves very little time for a 5th OF who would be limited almost strictly to pinch hitting and extreme spot starts, and again that just doesn't seem like the role Edmonds wants nor would be well suited for success in.
  20. Those factors are certainly significant and the more I think about it lately it makes me think that the Rays might make a strong play for Fielder should he become available. They have the pitching we would certainly require in any Fielder deal and with Pena a free agent after this year they will have a hole at first base.
  21. I don't think being able to trade draft picks would help anything. At the point these players are being drafted there is so little information out there from which to draw a reliable conclusion. Just look at the bust rate for first round picks.
  22. It seems like this year's budget is already nearly as high as it is going to get, so i'd guess any potential extension starts next year. Say we offer him the CC money, 5/100. Break it up however you like 5 @ 20, 15,20,20,20,25, whatever. Would Prince sign that? I think it's a very fair offer and he'd have to at least consider it. There are a bunch of first basemen set to be free agents in the next two years, the Yankees are obviously set and prince probably won't want to become a full time DH at age 28 all factors which diminish the amount of money he'll be able to get as a free agent. Throw in his body type and is any team really going to give him that 7 or 8 year deal that Boras will be looking for, regardless of how productive he is over the next two seasons? If he were to sign that 5/100 deal, he would hit free agency again coming into his age 32 season. He would also enter free agency with Ryan Braun, so I guess I highly anticipate that 2015 offseason. On a mostly unrelated note in 2015 & 16 the Rays hold an 11 & 11.5 million team option on Evan Longoria. At least Braun can take solace knowing that.
  23. Weeks posted a combined UZR score of -22.5 through 2006 (which covers 1,652.3 innings), yet has a 0.5 UZR since (in 2,343.7 innings). Just saw that little tidbit over at fangraphs and thought it was interesting with all the talk of weeks being a negative defender. This was the most recent Weeks defense thread I could find so I figured I'd just drop it in here instead of starting a whole new thread.
  24. Cole Gillespie and Roque Mercedes were listed as the number three and ten prospects respectively in the Arizona system over at fangraphs. Not a very good sign for the Dbacks future.
