  1. I believe this is Gamel's last option year so if he isn't on the 25 man to start 2012 he would then be a free agent.
  2. Granted it's been a tough schedule, a bunch of guys have been hurt and we've got some new pieces to mix in (or hide depending on how you look at it) but after watching this team without him I think that Delfino might be the third (or even 2nd best over Jennings) player on this team. And it kind of scares me.
  3. I agree AAA is probably the best and most logical option for Mat to start the year and he could be the first call up if there was an injury at one of the corners, I just worry that he'll maybe start to (some would say continue to) stagnate if that does indeed occur. At the same time with the way he hit the ball towards the end of the season after he had a chance to fully recover from his injury I could see him getting off to a ridiculous start and really raising his stock/pushing the Brewers hand a little bit. If he does start in Nashville what position do you think he'll be playing? 3B mostly with a RF and 1B thrown in here and there?
  4. I for one love Rickie leading off. The leadoff hitter gets the most PAs over the course of the year so putting Escobar there just leaves too many empty bases for Braun, Fielder and the rest. Plus Weeks has the best on base skills (aside from Fielder) and is fast so he seems to make the most sense to me. If Cain can maintain an OBP around .350 or so (which I have my doubts about) I wouldn't mind putting him in the top spot and dropping Rickie to second. The thing that concerns me the most about our lineup is that two hole. Most lineup tools seem to suggest it is most beneficial to have your best hitter second as the third spot comes up most often with bases empty and two outs. I'd probably write this down on opening day... Weeks Braun Hart Fielder McGehee Cain Gallardo Lucroy Escobar
  5. I'd try to model Rickie's deal off of Hart's in terms of money/years. I realize he is younger and has a higher upside than Uggla, but the injury concerns should somewhat limit how much he can reasonably demand.
  6. As this offseason progresses it seems more and more evident that the Brewers are going to go all in and try to make one last run with Prince in a Milwaukee uniform. The question this brings up is whither Mat Gamel? At the outset it seemed like one of Prince or Casey would be traded for pitching help and Gamel would slide into the vacated spot. But the market for Prince never really developed and the Brewers seem to view McGehee as a long term piece as his name hasn't come up in the hot stove at all. So that leaves one of two (undesirable) options. Trade Mat. This would be a bad idea as his value is nearly as low as it could be and he is the only left handed and potential impact bat we have close to ML ready. The other option would be to use him on the bench this year where he would maybe get 1 or 2 starts a week at 3rd or in RF as well as PH appearances. Again, less than ideal because you're putting Gamel right back in the same situation/role that seemingly got him off track to start with in 2009. So, what do you think becomes of Milwaukee's favorite zim zam inducer?
  7. If the Brewers do indeed intend to compete in 2011 I think they'll start Jeffress in the AAA rotation for a few months and then call him up to the big league bullpen sometime after the All Star break. As for how he's viewed by other teams I think it ultimately depends on that teams 2011 intentions. An organization like TB or ATL would probably view him as a reliever while KC might be more inclined to try him as a starter.
  8. I would say he's had two really good years and one completely ridiculous year. His 2010 and 2008 WARs were 5.4 and 4.9 which would be the 2nd and 3rd best years of any Brewer pitcher in the last 10 years after Sheets in 2004. If Cain, Jeffress and 1 or 2 B prospects isn't enough to get it done, move on Doug.
  9. Does anyone else think it seems like a waste of the game's best defensive LF to put him in Fenway? Much of Crawford's value lies in turning doubles into outs, how's he gonna do that in fenway?
  10. I don't have any actual facts to back this up but it seems like in lots of cases the 2nd year pitching after TJ is when pitchers really get everything back together. Cliff Lee is obviously the exception, but his average fastball velocity has been trending upward since he turned 30. I know Lee didn't have TJ, but just showing that a rise in FB velocity isn't completely unprecedented as a pitcher ages. All that said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Marcum put up an average FB velocity north of 88 this year which paired with his already effective change up and developing cutter should make for a fine #2/3 caliber pitcher.
  11. The situations aren't exactly the same, of course, but there are certainly parallels. Lawrie is a 20 year old kid with a bank account and questionable judgement. Josh Hamilton already went through all his troubles and allegedly conquered his demons when the pictures of college girls doing body shots off of his abs showed up online last year. And this is a married man who had dedicated his life to the lord. My main point being just because you're a bonehead doesn't mean you can't win an MVP or seven, just ask Barry Bonds.
  12. The last offseason the market was this overboard we ended up with Suppan and his ridiculous deal. Hopefully Doug can find that other SP via a trade of McGehee instead of getting in on Pavano or any of these other old FAs who are getting too many years and too much money to chew frames.
  13. Haven't looked at the Lawrie pics but being young and doing stupid things/having character concerns does not preclude you from being a great hitter. Josh Hamilton, for instance. I did look at those pictures. And laughed. A lot.
  14. Marcum was top 20 in value last year amongst AL starters so while he may not be an "ace" he is a solid #2.
  15. I guess this also means no more posts from Clancy about moving Lawrie to SS.
  16. If we were going to trade Lawrie I would've preferred to get a guy back like Garza or Billingsley. Guys in about the same position service time/results wise as Marcum but with better stuff, less injury history. Apparently they weren't available. Don't get me wrong, I like Marcum as a pitcher for the most part. He has gotten good results in the toughest division in baseball. It seems like he can swing it a little bit. He's already had his surgery. His change up was devastating and amongst the best pitches in baseball last year. Guys with good change ups and blah fastballs have to be on top of their game at all times, though. Just ask James Shields.
  17. With Lawrie traded we may as well lock this guy up. Cain, Jeffress, Odorizzi?
  18. If it's Lawrie AND Gamel, wow. Our only legit hitting prospects for two years of a guy who has had great results with a small margin of error.
  19. Yeah, I think the main problem I have with it is that Marcum is only under control for two more years. Six years of Lawrie >>> Two years of Marcum. That's why I thought McGehee is a better match. Four years of McGehee seems more equitable with two years of Marcum for me, especially as their values were essentially equal last year.
  20. Just want to say that if Marcum is the best we could fetch for Lawrie color me unimpressed. A soft tossing flyball pitcher, at least he already had his tommy john. I know that Lawrie has some positional uncertainty but the bat is going to play. And Tom H, I know its the internet age but get some solid details before you start tweeting all over the place. First you say it's pitching prospects, then you come back and say Lawrie is a good bet to be included. So which is it Professional Journalist? I'd rather send McGehee for Marcum (or someone better ideally), let Gamel sink or swim at 3B and depending on how the Weeks contract situation plays out maybe shift Lawrie to 3B at Nashville. Then whoever stinks the least at 3rd out of Gamel/Lawrie stays there and the other replaces Prince at first for 2012.
  21. If they let Berkman play 140 games in the outfield I am more than okay with this move.
  22. Baltimore is apparently heavy on Mark Reynolds and Chris Tillman's name has come up. Not sure who the Orioles would value more between Reynolds and McGehee. They're about the same age but Reynolds is more expensive while offering better upside/pedigree.
  23. My lasting memories of Shousey will be the handful of times he followed through straight into the splits. Awesome.
  24. If Tulo stays healthy and continues to produce at an elite level the contract is a no brainer. The thing is there aren't that many players in the history of the game who can year in and year out produce at that level much less while playing the middle infield. I'll put the over/under on the number of 5+ WAR seasons Tulo produces during the length of the contract at 5. What side of the line does your money fall on? I just can't help but think of Sizemore after 08. He was 26. His last four seasons had been 7.1, 5.7, 7.3 and 5.4 WAR. He had three years and an option remaining on his contract. He provided good offense and defense at a premium up the middle position. His last two years have been a mess of injuries and even with two reasonably priced years left on his deal Cleveland is hoping he can reestablish value and move him before all value is lost. Now look at Tulo this year. He is 26. His last four seasons have been 6.4, 5.7, 0.9, 5.4 WAR. He had three years and an option left on his contract. He provides good offense and defense at a premium up the middle position. I'm not saying just because Sizemore imploded that Tulo will do the same, just trying to illustrate why handing out and extension to someone with four years of control remaining is a risky proposition.
  25. Cheeseburger from Nite Owl but they're closed for the season.
