Yeah, 20 pitches is not ideal.

At least the Brewers crowd is not embarrassing like the Rays. They had 19,000 yesterday and today when some fans started booing the announcer said that some in the “group” were booing because you couldn’t call it a crowd.

Watching this Rays game is raising my fears about what might happen tonight. After a terrible first game, the Rays fell behind early and are going down meekly. That could easily be the Brewers tonight if the DBacks jump ahead and Gallen displays the same mastery over the Brewers that he did in his two starts this season.

There were some comments last night that there were a lot of empty seats at AFF and that the crowd enthusiasm was low. Looking at prices on Stub Hub it looks like the crowd will be smaller tonight. I wonder how many tickets to these games were sold to people (both fans and brokers) anticipating the Cubs being in this series

As I alluded to earlier our difference seems to be over the meanings of the words "assumption" and "conclusion". Since you are insisting on pursuing this, I'm going to get a little professorial about it. I am using the words "assumption" and "conclusion" as they are defined in the dictionary, and I think that you, Brewcrew82, and maybe some others, are using the word "assumption" incorrectly. Specifically, here are the relevant definitions of these words as they appear in the Meriam-Webster dictionary: Assumption: "something taken as being true or factual and used as a starting point for a course of action or reasoning". (My bolding added). Conclusion: "an opinion arrived at through a process of reasoning". In this case, as I have explained more than once, I took some facts and evidence, specifically Woodruff's previous experience with the same injury, and the comments made by Counsell and Woodruff, and used them to reach the conclusion that Woodruff will miss the entire postseason. I never claimed that my conclusion will definitely prove to be correct, but I didn't make any assumptions as part of reaching that conclusion. Some interpretation or analysis of facts is often a necessary part of reaching a conclusion, but that's a lot different than making an assumption. It's part of the "process of reasoning". I think it's bizarre that you continue to push this even while conceding that most everyone agrees with my conclusion. But, I guess I'm not surprised because this isn't the first time that you've jumped into an exchange to challenge my opinions. If using words properly makes me arrogant, then I guess I'm guilty, but I'm not going to use them improperly just to satisfy people on this board. If it makes you feel better, I admit that I did not, and still do not, know for certain that Woodruff would miss the entire postseason even if the Brewers go all the way to the World Series. And, if you want to conclude (incorrectly) that I used assumptions to reach that conclusion, go ahead.

They might not be afraid of facing a good pitcher but they might be incapable of hitting one. This was a game the Brewers really needed to win and they laid a major egg on several fronts. The team that won the first game won every series in the wild card round last year and only one of them went 3 games. The Brewers have put themselves into a tough spot.

And there’s the game. Worst case scenario for the Brewers. Lose a game while facing what will probably be the worst starting pitcher any team will have to use in the playoffs and burn up their own bullpen in the process.

Good thing they had Winker for that spot.

Though they will have Gallen (who has owned the Brewers) tomorrow and might not need much of a bullpen. Meanwhile the Brewers will probably have Miley and the Brewers bullpen has been used heavily too. If the Brewers don’t come back in this one, they will be in a pretty tough spot.

Got a break on ball 4 to Yelich. But looks like he’s out there.

I was focusing on the sidewinding delivery, but he did OK. Just not very lucky.

This pitcher is going to be tough for Taylor.

I'm not really sensing doom and gloom. I think it's more a matter of frustration dealing with an unexpected last minute blow to the team's greatest area of strength.

The moment of truth. As the OP said, the first game in a 3 game series is always crucial, and this one always seemed bigger than usual because of Burnes being matched up against someone other than Gallen or Kelly. Woodruff being out makes it even more pivotal. The question all season has been whether the Brewers offense (even the post deadline version) could produce the runs needed to win games against top teams and their best pitchers. We’ll start to get the answer to that tonight. All of the Brewers pitchers will have to be sharp because, as we saw during the season, the DBacks will run at every opportunity. They can turn any careless walk into a runner in scoring position.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree that a CONCLUSION based on certain facts is not the same as an ASSUMPTION of any facts. I am taking the FACTS of what Counsell and Woodruff said and how they said it and drawing the CONCLUSION that Woodruff will not be pitching this postseason. If that conclusion proves to be wrong I will own it. The other relevant FACT is that Woodruff had the same issue in April and it took 4 months for him to return to the mound But, the poster who I originally responded to was speculating that Woodruff might have received a medical opinion that he might be able to return this postseason. I think that’s highly unlikely. I am not confused as to why someone might quibble with my comments when they have established a history of doing it.

So, you basically agree with me but want to quibble. When I heard Woodruff tearfully say that maybe this was a blessing because he could get his issue taken care of, I thought it was obvious that he had gotten some pretty bad news from a doctor and the only question is how long he will be unable to pitch. And I also think it was obvious from his reaction that he knows his return to pitching isn’t going to be next week or next month. If you want to call my conclusion an “assumption”, I really don’t care. But I don’t see how you can reach any other conclusion from it.

As I said earlier the facts are the words used and demeanor shown by both Counsell and Woodruff in their comments to the press. I haven’t seen anyone who saw those say they simply expressing disappointment that Woodruff is going to miss a start or two. Have you seen them?
