  1. I don’t think any of us want to see Goldschmidt up this inning.
  2. Time to finally push across some runs against the Cardinal bullpen which has completely shut down the Brewers in this series. Not a good start from Taylor with the bases loaded.
  3. So, thanks to Taylor, McCutchen’s gaffe just costs one run.
  4. The Cardinals might not have a great bullpen in general, but in this series they have delivered somethjng like 13 scoreless innings while allowing just 3 Brewer hits. It seems like either the Cardinals bullpen is pretty good, or the Brewers hitters are pretty weak, or both.
  5. So, my conclusion from this (and several other relevant stats) is that at full strength the Brewers offense is about average, but the worst among the 8 NL teams that are legitimate playoff contenders. With any injuries they are even worse than that. Unless you expect a team to have no injuries to good players, while other teams deal with the normal and expected numbers of injuries, as the season approaches the half way point, the clear conclusion is that the Brewers have a bad offense for a playoff contender.
  6. Great win for the Brewers last night. I am traveling and was just following the results, not watching, but this post made me chuckle. It’s the irrational euphoria flip side to someone declaring that the Brewers have zero chance of winning the World Series after a tough game or series. A great 7 inning start by Burnes, a finish by Hader, and someone hitting a 2 run homer is how the Brewers won a GAME in the playoffs last year. It takes a lot more to win 12 or 15 playoff games. it was a good win in an important series with some tough pitching matchups coming up. But let’s enjoy it and not not turn it into something bigger than it was.
  7. I haven’t seen anything but I didn’t expect him back until the team gets back tomorrow. Unless his wife and baby are having problems you’d think he could report to games and be available on short notice if needed.
  8. Houser has been walking a tightrope and he finally fell off.
  9. Maybe when Woodruff comes back, and if Ashby is healthy, they can move Houser out of the rotation. He has not been helping the team lately. After the All Star break they won’t be needing 6 starters for awhile.
  10. As one simple thing, try refreshing the page and see if that helps.
  11. The way Houser has pitched it might take a lot of runs to win today.
  12. Lauer going for the back to back to back two games in a row.
  13. A guy who throws this hard might be hard to see and hit with early evening lighting.
  14. By "recent" do you mean the last 6 weeks? After missing the first few weeks of the season, Urias came out smoking in his first 7 games (5 against the Reds and 2 against the Reds) and posted an OPS of 1.067. In 30 games since then he has posted an OPS of .568. For the rest of May his OPS was .649 and so far in June it has been .406. So, it has been a steady plunge. If his thumb has been bothering him that long, it's hard to see how it's going to get better by playing him every day and plugging him in the cleanup spot.
  15. Brewers lineup: Yelich 7 Adames 6 Tellez 3 McCutchen DH Renfroe 9 Narvaez 2 Taylor 8 Peterson 5 Hiura 4
  16. And to think that, several weeks before the move, there were posters suggesting that, instead of moving Yelich down from the three spot to the bottom of the order (or benching him), that they try him at leadoff.
  17. Based on just the current standings, the Reds are close to the worst team in the NL. Their record of 23-40 puts them even with the Cubs, just ahead of the Nats, and slightly behind the Pirates and Rockies. But, since their ridiculously awful 3-22 start (which ended on May 5 with the sweep by the Brewers at AFF in which the Brewers scored approximately 100 runs) the Reds have been a better team than the Brewers. Since that date, the Reds are 22-18 with a run differential of +31 while the Brewers have gone 17-22 with a run differential of -33. The Reds offense, which now includes Joey Votto, has enabled the team to overcome bad pitching, as they showed in taking two of three from the Brewers in mid May, while the Brewers were at pretty much full strength. The Brewers have only managed to go 3-4 in recent series against the Cubs and Nats, two teams that have both gone 14-25 since May 5. Based on recent performances by the offenses and the starting pitchers in this series, the Reds hold the upper hand. Getting 2 out of 3 in this series is going to be difficult, but would be a step in the right direction for a struggling team.

  19. I agree that Adames is fine as an overall player. But when the subject is offense, Adames should not be expected to be a good team’s best hitter. Your final paragraph is a good summary of my opinion about the Brewers offense.
  20. A significant part of the disagreement is that some people consider a “core” player for an offense to be a consistent, proven All Star caliber hitter who can anchor the middle of the lineup. I put players like Moilitor, Yount, and Cooper and Braun and Fielder in that category. Compared to the best teams in the NL, what you are considering core players are closer to supporting cast than core. Yelich was supposed to be a core player, and Hiura supposedly had that potential. But neither of them fits that category now. Adames could be a core player if he could hit the way he did for the Brewers last season. But there was always a question about whether that was a realistic expectation, and this season so far he has fallen far short of that. Urias’ track record is even less established, and he isn’t even producing like a good supporting player this season.
  21. I think it’s clearly a combination of injuries and subpar performance. If you look around MLB the Brewers injury situation is no worse than a lot of other teams. But other contending teams (like the Mets) have done a better job of dealing with them. Even when fully healthy I still think, as I did before the season, that the Brewers offense is one of the weakest, if not the weakest, of the playoff contending teams. Blaming the anemic offense of the last 6 weeks on injuries ignores what the hitters have produced even when healthy. The Brewers do not have one regular position player with an OPS over .800, and I don’t think any other playoff contender is in that boat. To make things worse, the pitching has not been as outstanding as needed to prop up that offense. Even when healthy, the starting pitchers have not lived up to hopes and expectations. I’m not closing the book on the season because the Brewers could still recover and win the weak division or grab one of the wild card spots. But something has to change pretty soon for them to make the playoffs, much less be better than a very long shot to survive 3 or 4 rounds of playoffs.
  22. That will be a good thing if he pitches like one of the best pitchers in baseball and not like he did before his health issues.
  23. Hopefully Ashby’s problem is a minor lower body thing like a hamstring tweak that won’t cause him to miss a start. 4 games against the Cardinals next week is going to be challenging enough without having to resort to another emergency starter.
