  1. There’s the second playoff contender to win the season series against the Brewers. This homestand might really come back to haunt the team in September.
  2. BA is talking about weathering the next road trip and then the schedule gets better. I don’t think a 7 game homestand against the Cardinals and Blue Jays looks better.
  3. Better to see Renfroe up with nobody on base. That gives him a better chance to drive in a run.
  4. At least the Brewers were in the game for 2 1/2 hours today.
  5. Valiant effort from Burnes today but not the result the Brewers needed from him.
  6. One criticism of Renfroe so far this season is that, even when he was hot, he has not been good with runners on base. Only 19 total RBI while hitting 9 HR might be a clue. With runners on he is hitting .194 and with RISP .172. Need more than that from a middle of the lineup hitter.
  7. Another 30 minutes, another inning. Phillies should be taking the lead here.
  8. Between last night and tonight it might be a good idea not to declare that we’re getting the good version of a pitcher in the first inning. Burnes looks like he’s had it already.
  9. The Cardinals and Rays just finished a game in 2 hours, with the Rays winning 2-1. The Brewers and Phillies have played almost an hour and still haven’t completed 2 innings.
  10. The Phillies significantly improved their chances of winning with that inning.
  11. Maybe not easy but Adames didn’t handle it well. Slight bobble and then a low wide throw.
  12. If nothing else Burnes is already setting a low limit on the innings he’ll be covering today. Six might be tough.
  13. The classic illustration of damning with faint praise.
  14. Don’t need gloves on walks either. Burnes is already up to 30 pitches.
  15. I was referring to roster moves by other playoff contenders too. If the Brewers stand pat they might actually be moving backward and they don’t have much of a cushion.
  16. When Wong is available I would rather use Peterson as DH and rotate other position players through the DH spot to give them a little rest. I don’t like the idea of a guy with a 50% strikeout rate in the DH spot.
  17. Brewers didn’t need gloves last night either, but the fans in the right field stands did.
  18. With the Braves and Phillies gaining traction, and the Brewers pitching strength taking some hits, the conversation has to shift from whether the Brewers offense is good enough to win the World Series to whether or not it’s good enough to make the playoffs. Midseason roster moves are going to play a big role.
  19. This just feels like a situation of a confident team facing one that is slumping and pressing. Butnes going out knowing that one HR may be enough to beat him isn’t ideal. Might need a change of venue and a new series to shake the doldrums.
  20. Adames has had a streaky start to his season. Over his first 16 games, he had an OPS of .574. Then he went on the tear that included the 4 hit, 7 RBI game and winning Player of the Week. In those 10 games, all but one against the Pirates, Cubs, and Reds, he produced an OPS of 1.304 to raise his OPS for the season to .873. Then in the last 9 games before his injury he slumped through an OPS of ,427. while going 4 for 32. Tonight's game makes him 4 for his last 36.
  21. O’Neill is playing his second game after coming off the IL, and Arenado was getting a night off. O’Neill had 2 hits last night and 2 more, including an HR, tonight. After what O’Neill did last year he’s earned a longer leash. If he regains anything close to last year’s form the rest of the way he’ll give that lineup a big boost.
  22. The Brewers are catching the Phillies at a bad time. They are suddenly a confident team.
