  1. Even if Hauser gets out of this inning, that misplay to start the inning has made him work harder than necessary.
  2. Bloop hit that should have been caught and a catcher’s interference error. Shades of Tuesday when the Brewers gift wrapped runs and played themselves out of the game.
  3. Garcia is probably the best hitter right now. Narvaez has been ice cold before his double last night. By what time period are you measuring? A week, a month, the season? In the Brewers offense, the gap between the “best” hitter and being ice cold is pretty small. If I was looking for a hitter that I thought had the best chance to get a hit or advance a runner, right now I would probably pick Wong.
  4. The play in the 10th inning last night is a perfect example of the value of a properly executed contact play. If Hiura had taken a good lead and broken right on contact, he would have scored easily. But by not getting a good lead or a good break, he was a dead duck. I have little doubt that a better (not necessarily faster) runner would have scored easily on that ball given that Cronenworth had to lunge just to make the play.
  5. The reasons for not bunting are just as simple. The percentages of the bunt successfully moving the runners along are much lower than people seem to assume. For starters, today’s hitters are not good bunters, and today’s pitchers are hard to bunt against. Also, even if the bunt is successful, the percentages of getting a runner in from third with less than two out are a lot lower than people seem to assume, especially in the age of 3 true outcomes. When you stack up those percentages, the probabilities point to letting hitters swing away in many situations. One of those situations is when the hitter after the player who would be bunting is a high strikeout candidate. You can criticize modern players for not being able to bunt or put the ball in play, but I can’t criticize a manager for making moves that take the players’ skills into account.
  6. Just the worst offense imaginable. 3 times in this game with a runner on second and no outs and nothing to show for it.
  7. So, since they’ll need Garcia to pinch hit, which pitcher will start on second if they’re only down by 1? ETA: forgot about the goofy rule when the last batter is out of the game.
  8. Since Wong’s 2 run single in the 4th inning Monday put the Brewers ahead 5-0, the position players have managed 1 consolation run on 5 hits in 21 innings.
  9. If Hader pitches a scoreless 9th against the heart of the Padres order, who pitches the 10th?
  10. Shaw is just feeling for the ball instead of swinging at it, and he ends up with those weak flies to left.
  11. As long as all he has to do is field bounding balls and step on the bag, he’s OK. But, if he has to toss the ball anywhere, look out.
  12. The CF looked to be right on that line and not too deep. If he has any kind of arm Narvaez would have had trouble scoring.
  13. Expect to see a lot of wear and tear on the bullpen the next two days. First two hitters on base and Lauer turns his ankle in the process.
  14. Now that Woodruff and Burnes are done, I expect the rest of this series to be ugly.
