  1. I just caught out of the corner of my eye Aaron Judge waving his big mitt in front of an Oriole turning a DP. He missed the ball this time. I turned up the sound and Jim Palmer was talking about it. I’ll have to dig that up when the game shows up on the MLB TV archive.
  2. He did slightly tweak his ankle on the bag, but I think it’s the hamstring that’s going to be the problem. He was already hobbling on his last step before he hit the bag.
  3. I don’t hate Bauers and I wouldn’t release him. I hate that they don’t have anyone better to bat cleanup against RHP. It isn’t his fault that they don’t.
  4. Who’s the next catcher in the organization? Looks like IL for Sanchez.
  5. I’ve just learned over the years to temper my expectations. I can’t begin to count how many times I’ve heard people get excited about a prospect or minor leaguer and how he should be up instead of someone currently on the team. But for every Ryan Braun there are many Randy Readys who have done nothing but hit at every level (until they get to the majors). At least in Black’s case there is enough dead weight on the current roster that the bar to make an improvement is pretty low.
  6. I’m always interested to see if a prospect that comes up will be the rare one that makes a significant impact.
  7. There have been a lot of comments about how the catcher moved forward and into Bauers’ swing path. While that is irrelevant according to the comment to the rule as written, I’m not sure it is even factually accurate. I looked at the play again, and in the side view you can really see how exaggerated Bauers’ follow through was as he let go of the bat with one hand. The catcher had to slide to his right to block the pitch, but it doesn’t look like he moved forward much as the umpire is still right behind him. He really falls forward after he gets hit in the head.
  8. He also said, correctly, that he doesn’t know everything. He was dead wrong in saying the umpire made the wrong call because he does not know about the comment in the rule (quoted in a post above) that specifically addresses this situation. If you want, you can complain that the comment should have an exception for a situation in which the ball gets past the catcher before the batter hits him with the bat. But, where would you draw the line on that? In this case the ball squirted behind the catcher and whether or not the runner on third could score would depend on how well the runner recognized where the ball was, how fast he is, how quickly the catcher recovers the ball, and whether the pitcher comes in to cover the plate.
  9. I think the relevant rule is 6.01 (a) (1) which says that is interference by a batter or runner when: “After a third strike that is not caught by the catcher, the batter-runner clearly hinders the catcher in his attempt to field the ball. Such batter-runner is out, the ball is dead, and all other runners return to the bases they occupied at the time of the pitch.” This rule specifically addresses the fact that the catcher did not catch the pitch, so the attempt to “feel the ball“ can only refer to his attempt to retrieve the ball that he didn’t catch.
  10. That’s quite a stretch to think the catcher thought “Oops, that ball got by me I think I’ll dive forward and hope I get hit in the head with the bat”. If he doesn’t go after the ball quickly two runs would score.
  11. You’re wrong. The umpires know the rule and made the correct call.
  12. Despite his blind squirrel moment yesterday I hate having Bauers in the cleanup spot. To me it’s a sure sign of a weak offense.
  13. I don’t have a current rule book but I’m sure it’s a situation where interference creates a dead ball with runners returning to their bases. And it’s hard to argue that a batter clocking the catcher in the head isn’t interference. It really stinks in the situation because the interference didn’t cause the catcher to let the pitch get by him.
  14. A dreary, dreadful loss. The ship is sinking.
  15. Thanks, I didn’t notice that. Those slides are noticeably different, especially the last one where he briefly raises and lowers his arm. My opinion /interpretation is that judge intentionally extends and keeps his arm up on DP balls in an attempt to distract the fielder or get him to try to throw the ball around his arm. He probably feels that if he is already out and the double play will almost certainly be completed, he has nothing to lose . He was probably laughing privately that he got away with that.
  16. I’d like to see some video of how Judge slides into second base, or maybe even third base or home, when there is no double play in order and he’s just trying to get to the base. That might give us an idea of whether throwing his hand up like that is part of his natural sliding motion, or if it is an attempt to distract the throw for a double play.
  17. What you’re doing here is mixing up two different rules. The question on the Hoskins play was whether the slide was within the rules’ definition of a legal slide. That is reviewable and the review confirmed that the slide met the definition. The issue on the play yesterday was whether Judge interfered with a thrown ball after he was retired as a runner. For whatever reason interference is not reviewable but the crew chief confirmed after the game that, after seeing the video, interference should have been called. Even if both moves are douchey, one was within the rules and the other resulted in interference. Of course the reason Brewers fans were so upset about this play is that it led directly to the Yankees blowing open a tied game. If Uribe hadn’t blown up right after that the play would have become a minor footnote.
  18. This video has a very thorough explanation of why Judge should have been called for interference, resulting in a DP. It also addresses why the explanation from Judge and Yankees fans that “he always slides this way” doesn’t remove the interference. Some of the items I saw about this cited a rule relating to interfering with a fielder on a batted ball that does not apply to this. This play made us so mad that we left the game after the Yankees turned their extra out into a game clinching barrage of runs. We couldn’t take listening to the whooping Yankees fans around us when they had been gifted their big inning.
  19. No Giannis, probably no Lillard. Don’t hold your breath or use up any emotional energy on the Bucks. Who knows whether they could have made a run in the playoffs at full strength but the team they’re throwing out there now isn’t going anywhere.
  20. I also hate a lineup that has Jake Bauers batting cleanup.
