It’s still possible Vaughn will get the same amount of at bats he otherwise would. It seems like we’ve been pulling him in the fourth inning quite a bit. it is kind of nice to have Vaughn available off the bench if the Padres go to a left-handed reliever.

I agree. High probability we see a right handed pitcher in the third inning. No sense being stuck with Sanchez the entire game when most of it will be pitched by right handed pitchers. I like Sanchez and Vaughn off the bench to keep their left-handed pitchers in the pen.

I can understand keeping Sanchez on the bench. Vaughn should have had at least one at bat against Ray. I guess we have two right handed bats on the bench now.

If you think of it in terms of 50/50 coin flips between evenly matched teams, if Team A wins game 1 then they only need two wins in four games. It is less likely to flip heads on a coin 3 times out of 4 remaining games, in that sense. 68.75% chance of winning two coin tosses with up to four tries.

That’s fair, Let’s assume May and Gasser for game three and we lose. We throw the kitchen sink at San Diego with game 4 being a bullpen game. We use up Uribe and Megill through eight innings. Would it be wise to throw Miz for the ninth inning with a one run lead to prevent game 5 from ever happening? With 13 pitchers, many of them good, it seems difficult to imagine messing with Miz on 2-3 days rest. Assume two wins in Milwaukee first 🙂

I think one of the games (3 or 4) is a Dustin May Robert Gasser piggyback and the other game is pure bullpen game. I think our regular bullpen arms are capable of putting zeros up on the road.

How about Vaughn as DH, Bauers at 1B and Lara in RF? That gives us the opportunity to pinch hit or run for Vaughn and invariably swap Frelick for Lara at some point, too. Sanchez remains a weapon off the bench.
