  1. Anyone know anything about Jhoan Cruz? I know that pitching staff isn't the most big-time prospect studded in the organization, but pulling the opening day start and striking out seven, even with the three runs given up, in four innings at least is making me mildly intrigued. And yes, this might just be because of how long it's been since there were minor league games to follow.
  2. These types of signings also keep some of the younger prospects from being forced up for roster reasons whether they are ready or not. I think a couple of these signings likely wouldn’t have happened without all of the injuries.
  3. I’m probably high board on Cabrera and even I can’t see this as being anything other than waiting for Maile to go back to AAA so Diaz can drop back to AA, especially given none of the other members of that DSL team got full-season spots. Daniel Castillo’s placement feels that way too.
  4. Well, called one of them. It is clear the Brewers are being conservative with placements for the foreign signings. Outside of one pitcher who was an older signing and Cabrera’s obviously short-term AA assignment, no one moved straight from the DSL (or in Perez, Medina and Quero’s case, not even that) to a full season team.
  5. Got my second Moderna earlier in the week. That night I had first uncontrollable shivering and then feeling feverish for about six hours. After that, the only thing I was left with was sleep deprivation. My wife had more mild symptoms (mostly widespread muscle soreness) but they lasted for a day and a half.
  6. It feels like A) the Packers know that historically offensive linemen have provided the most Day 3 value and B) are on the verge of overcompensating for that fact. That said, can't really fault either of the picks. I kind of liked Van Lanen as a late-round guard convert.
  7. No idea if it was accurate, but wasn't there a rumor that there was an injury issue with Marshall? That might be why he lasted so long
  8. Maybe it is just that my patience for unneeded drama is getting less and less as I get older, but I'm fine if they deal him. Also, he made me reference "Ethan Frome" today. He deserves to be shipped to the Jets for that alone.
  9. You know all those snaps Dafney was getting toward the end of the year? Deguara probably gets those much of the season. Like I said, criticize position or player if you want, but snap count? No. Also, setting aside the Love pick, which is a whole different discussion, how many guys available at the Packers picks would have been significant upgrades last season? Half dozen, maybe?
  10. Not a shock. For all the hype him playing with the AA squad early on got, with a guy who wouldn’t be expected to start above low A, that is usually a sign that the plan is to start him in short season ball.
  11. Lumping DeGuara in there is a bit of a stretch. Criticize the pick, criticize the position the pick was used on, but snap count? The guy got hurt week 2.
  12. Unless I missed them, I think 2/3 of the pitchers acquired in the Phelps trade also haven't made an appearance. On the plus side, recent days have seen the return of Zamora and Nnebe (still one of my favorite sleeper bats, which probably dooms him to quick oblivion). With a number of the infielders, particularly Wilson and Devanney who looked to be possible AA guys, I wonder if the injuries led to one or both getting shuffled to the alternate site. It will be interesting to see the position player roster construction at the higher levels to start the season if the Brewers don't start getting guys back. Will players start up a level from where they were planned to or will they just put an AZL guy like Castillo or Roa in the last spot on the bench rather than reshuffle a bunch of guys a week into the season?
  13. "Hedbert Perez is “totally fine,” says Tom Flanagan. He was away from the complex for a week, not injury related, but is back now." Here's hoping that there are a few more like this since there are a few more guys who have disappeared recently from the box scores in addition to the guys like Abreu and Nnebe and a few potential Wisconsin pitchers who I don't think have shown up at all.
  14. Another fun fact, if my math is correct, the Cubs are averaging about 1.5 runs per game in games started by Woodruff, Burnes and Peralta and about 5.5 in all their other games.
  15. Depending on health, the Brewers have 18-21 pitchers who you could make a good case should be in AAA. There just isn't room for everyone.
  16. High school picks who have the kind of start to their careers in the minors that McKinney did don't completely bust all that often. I'd kind of though McKinney was going to be the exception, but hopefully this is a sign he is not.
  17. And the award for getting me intrigued about a prospect I didn't know existed until the spring training rosters came out goes to ...
  18. It is going to be interesting to see who gets pushed up to AA if they keep 13 position players because you probably aren't just looking at one from that list. Assuming none are needed to fill AAA (and that I'm not forgetting anyone), you've got a AA core of Henry, Spanberger, Turang, Castro, Lutz, Aguilar, Palma, Wilson and, if healthy given that I don't think he has played a game yet, Fry. I could see Diaz making it as either a second or third catcher. Erceg could be there or he could be needed to fill out the AAA roster. That leaves at least two spots open, possibly more.
  19. There was a report someone that I'm forgetting right now that the Brewers liked what they saw both in his indy league season and instructs from Hamilton that they were considering starting him in AA. You also might get a sink-or-swim type scenario for one of the guys entering year six in the minors, Coca or Pinero. I imagine a couple of these guys will end up playing a decent amount of third base in the lower levels as well. I believe Garcia is the only real third baseman in the A/A+ mix and even he could potentially be a candidate for AA with the expanded roster size.
  20. Judging by past years, I think the only things that can be taken from the first set of lineups are: 1. The players listed are healthy enough to play 2. Olson and Munsch are better than 50/50 as far as being stretched out as starters. And I'm not even that certain about the second.
  21. The only Latin players on the list who really surprised me were a few of the pitchers and catchers, and I'm guessing the catchers are probably there to have enough catching in camp and will be returning to the DSL later on. It wouldn't shock me, with Garcia spending time at the alternate site and the instructs raves for Quero, if they end up in A ball to tell you the truth. I guess you could make a case for Fernandez, Roa and Jaraba repeating DSL, but with it being their third year in the system, I can understand why they didn't. I'm more surprised that there aren't a couple more names (Perez and Bautista I figured were decent bets) but with, if I remember correctly, DSL guys not counting toward the cap on minor league players, there is a built-in reason to be conservative. They had to bring some over, though. With the draft pushed back and all of last year's picks being college guys, 2/3 of the opening day AZL lineup could end up being guys who haven't played stateside yet.
  22. The Brewers also are down much of their AAA starting pitching depth (Bettinger, File, Brown), and you could make a pretty good case that he had a better last year or spring than Lauer, Zimmermann and Godley.
  23. Yardley didn't seem to be in last year's form in spring training either. Hopefully Perdomo lives up to his potential. Has the potential to become a mainstay if everything clicks.
  24. Assuming that there isn't a really early opt-out date, they were in need of legitimate middle infielders in AAA and as depth. You could make the case their previous AAA middle infield, assuming Turang starts at AA, might collectively be better off in the outfield. Also, let's not sell Jose Hernandez short. He got his all-star spot because of an uncharacteristically good first half, not as the lone Brewers representative (Richie Sexson made it that year too). Also, on the prospect question, among the Brewers MLB.com top 30, you're probably looking at: AAA: Feliciano, Ray AA: Turang, Lutz, Henry Dillard and Kahle might be up for the second catcher spot as well, and there have been rumors that the Brewers might skip Mitchell and Hamilton straight to AA. But yah, especially the infield, outside of Turang, at the top two levels seems to have a lot of minor league free agent signings and guys heading into a sink or swim year perhaps a level above where they should be.
  25. And in the second half of 2018 his peripherals were off the charts compared to the rest of his career. Wrc+ of 90, LD% over 25% (better than 2020). Back then it was the run to the "he's broken out" take for 95% of Brewer fans. How did 2019 look? Yes, Arcia has shown in a 60-70 game window that he isn't horrible and could be above average. In-between he has shown he is the worst hitter in MLB (by a long-shot). There's nothing about his results in 2019 that 2nd half 2018 was a breakout and it was wise of Stearns to sell "high" on Arcia. Sure he barreled a few more pitches but he was striking out and swinging at stuff outside the zone at rates even higher than his career marks. Last year he actually improved in the areas everyone was saying he needed to improve in and the reaction was “must be a fluke.” I’m not even opposed to the trade, but it feels like anything short of an MVP type season would have been written off, and that also isn’t fair.
