  1. That's literally exactly what it means. You don't make a trade unless you think you are getting more value back than you are giving up. Stearns absolutely thinks that the 4 guys he gave up on are worth less than the contract years of Yelich. The Brewers are 100% in win now mode otherwise there would be no reason to sign Cain. I'm not suggesting that is a bad strategy, only that it is without a doubt the current strategy.
  2. Here was my plan: 1. Let all the prospects come up and see which ones fit. 2. Use excess money from having so many minimum salary and early abitration players on free agents. 3. After 2018, use spectacular depth to have a 10 year window of good teams a la the Cardinals for the past 20. 4. If truly in it at the deadline in a particular year, trade for rentals. 5. Sell some guys in trades later in their prime if you have depth behind to continually replenish the farm. I’m only worried about the Cubs this year and next. They may be good after that but I just think (especially if they get Darvish), that we had a lot of work to do to catch them short-term. I’m not saying perpetually wait. I think there could’ve been a long window opened up after this year, and I’d have been totally OK with signing free agents in this offseason to take a shot at it as well in 2018, even knowing it might be one more year before the odds for better. They must have determined that point one was going to be futile and therefore did a total 180. Acquiring young controllable talent only works if the talent they acquired was actually good. One can only conclude that they were traded because they felt that Cain and Yelich were more valuable to the Brewers than those 5 prospects and $80M of Marks A's money.
  3. If its the difference between making the playoffs and not, between having a chance at the World Series or not, you're damn right I am. If we have to go into another rebuild in 5-6 years, so be it. That's the economics of small market baseball. It's pretty clear the FO looked at our prospects and didn't see the makings of a great team now or in the future so they reversed course and went from young and controllable to win now. I'm fine with that. It means they can see they made mistakes and will correct it. IE , Ray isn't the guy they hoped for, so they went out and got the guy Ray was supposed to be in Yelich. You don't win with guys who strike out ever 2.5 times like Broxton, so they got Cain. They will complete the process by adding a serious TOR and yes, it will cost a ton and no we will not have a good farm team. But the MLB team in 2018 will be a real challenger.
  4. That ship has sailed, bro. Embrace it. They didn't trade 5 prospects and $80 million for two OFers when our roster was full of OFers so they could be half pregnant. There will be a trade for a key pitcher and we will give up a lot. You can't win big with our pitching staff so this has to happen. The reality is the team didn't want to rebuild indefinitely and they obviously decided our prospects weren't all that good and they wanted to sell high. It's going to continue.
  5. While I do think that's what it would take to land Mejia, I'm not sure how that helps the Brewers this year unless we go out and get another third baseman? We would need a 3B and honestly I'm not in love with Salazar as a TOR type because of his durability.
  6. Santana & T. Williams for Salazar, Kipnis, McKenzie? We aren't getting McKenize or Mejia (not and) for anything less than Santana plus top 100 types. According to BA our best prospect is Hiura who is ranked 56. If you want top 20 guys the price is prohibitive to the point where we just don't have the ammunition unless we want to empty the farm. I like Santana as much as probably anyone on this board, but he isn't going to get us a top 20 type of player except maybe at the deadline with a very desperate team and even then I'm not sure. T Williams doesn't move the needle.
  7. Do you think this team currently has enough starting pitching even if they sign a FA pitcher? No they definitely do not. Especially at the higher end. The problem is Santana by himself won't net us such a player and while we all like him, we have a Braun problem because he is untradeable and were then do you play Santana? I think at this point, we go for it and add two of our top 100 to Santana and trade for Archer. I'd stay away from Salazar due to lack of durability.
  8. If AZ wants to dump his contract, we could take it on plus prospects.
  9. We just saw what a Yelich trade looks like and it's very reasonable to think an Archer trade would be similar. Think Santana plus 2 of our 3 remaining top 100s. Nottingham, Villar, Thames, Et al would be throw ins and aren't in any way key guys to landing us a Mejia or an Archer.
  10. They will bring in a TOR pitcher. They have to if they want the moves for the two OFers to matter. I'd much rather they didn't gvie up another draft pick and another long term contract to a guy who likely won't be helping towards the end years of his deal, but at this point they have given up so much what's an extra 4th round pick if that will mean the playoffs in 2018?
  11. We just got a seriois reality check with the Yelich trade. It will take Stantana plus two of our remaining 3 top 100s to bring back a guy like Stroman.
  12. I used to think 1B was a position pretty much any pro baseball player could handle until we put Juan Fransisco there. Braun to 1B is ideal so we can keep Santana then sign a FA starting P. But I don't know Braun can even play there until he shows he can in spring.
  13. Agreed. The lineup needed to be fixed and Stearns fixed it. At the cost of 5 prospects and $80 Million. Can't have it both ways. By definition, either they paid market or they overpaid. By definition Stearns paid more than 28 other teams were willing to pay so technically he didn't pay market. By definition. If the reports are accurate Cain was receiving 4 year deals. Stearns gave him a 5 year plus a Bobby Bonilla adder to pay him until 2027. I absolutely agree the lineup needed fixing for the Brewers to get to the next level and these two players will be a big help in that regard in 2018.
  14. Agreed. The lineup needed to be fixed and Stearns fixed it. At the cost of 5 prospects and $80 Million.
  15. We just saw what the Yelich trade required, so we need to think in those terms when it comes to young TOR types. Guys like Broxton, Aguilar, and Thames aren't getting anything done here, so don't include them as anything other throw ins. To get the guys on your list we need to think our top 100 guys and Santana.
  16. Well, you're nothing if not predictable. I'm not laughing at your opinion, just that I would've bet my life you were going to say it. To make any grand proclamations about getting taken to the cleaners is really, really silly. We'll see. I don't know how many posts I've made defending the very same prospects that were traded while Boomer told me how disappointing and horrible they were. Now all of a sudden they were overpays. Some folks just gotta......... You might be more of a Stearns fan than a Brewers fan. He definitely over paid. Look at the proposals made by this board just a day before the actual trade. No one had anything like that deal. There were even some who stomped their feet at mere thought that the great Diaz would be an add on piece. Ditto Cain. 5 years and pick. Good God what a stupid contract. That said, the lineup badly needed to bring in players who are professional hitters and these two are definitely that. As I stated in the Cain thread, the Brewers of 2017 only scored when they hit HRs and they stopped doing that when they were badly needed and guys like Thames and Shaw remembered they were Thames and Shaw and wilted down the stretch. Cain and Yelich are much better players for a team that wants to play October baseball. So yes this was a big overpay for both, but the Brewers MLB club is also very much improved for 2018.
  17. Yes. That's the positive, not happy about Cain getting 17 Million when he is 36. Harder to move if it is needed. Stearns definitely overpaid for both OFers in the trade and the FA contract plus draft pick. However this was a lineup that only scored when they hit HRs. They were painful to watch down the stretch when the Cubs finally pulled away. For the Brewers to be serious contenders in the central, the line up had to be radically changed and if that meant paying too much then so be it.
  18. The offense is definitely improved so the rotation will need to be addressed and big since we are clearly going all in in the short term. Here's the question: if they trade for Archer and sign a Lynn or Jake, would this make us the heavy favorites to lead the Central over the Cubs?
  19. So Braun to RF? Ouch. I'd rather the Brewers release Braun (obviously not going to happen) and kept Santana.
  20. 5 years and a draft pick for a 32 year old OF. Classic old schools Brewers move.
  21. Two very good players in Cain (at least in the near terms) and Yelich but my goodness did Stearns get taken to the cleaners on both deals. He must have really wanted both players because he badly overpaid for both which is interesting since OF was hardly an area where we had few options.
  22. If Dubon was any good at all, he would be our starting 2B in 2018 instead of wasting assets to trade for a 2B. No, the Brewers will not be trading Arcia when they have no plan B there to acquire a OF when we are filthy with OFers including our top prospect.
  23. It depends how you define regression. Shaw played in 144 games last season, the last 50 of which weren't very good. I do think we would be better off focusing our discussion here on the Brewers roster construction rather than pontificating about the Cubs demise. I think (hope) we all realize the Cubs are likely a 90+ win team for the next few years with plenty of room for error. OT but I'm not sure Shaw is all that well conditioned. He is built like a bowling pin and has had two consecutive poor second halves. As for Darvish, the Cubs can have him and his massive salary. No one should ever sign a 31 year old pitcher to a 5-6 year deal.
  24. If they sign Cain will they still need to sign a starting pitcher?
  25. None of those guys especially Diaz is blue chip. Brinson is our blue chip player. Those other guys have potential of course, but they aren't headliners in a trade for a 4-5 WAR player.
