  1. I remembered him kind of complaining for a trade earlier this year but now Crawford has been hurt so he's actually been playing. Crawford would make more sense, two years left on his deal and basically useless at this point. Could probably backup all 3 positions for us so we at least get some use out of him. Personally, I'm fine with just keeping Braun but i think Dodgers is the most likely option for a trade since they don't care about money at all and he's from there.
  2. Yasmani Grandal for the Dodgers was a PED guy, I think in the same thing as Braun but I could be wrong. Difference is he's young and doesn't have a big salary. I can't think of any known guys with big contracts that were traded. But really there has been enough successful FA signings of guys that the fear has to be slowly going away. The way to do it would be to take back a Crawford or Ethier type contract from that so the financial burden isn't as bad, just like how Reyes went to Colo.
  3. After everything that has gone down I would bet he's fine being traded to a winning team. I mean, do you think he really loves Milwaukee? SoCal guy that went to college in Miami. We drafted him and controlled him until he was at least 30 so he had to embrace it as best he could, but it's not like he fits the midwest. He has at least one kid in LA now too, trade to the Dodgers and I'm sure he'd jump on it.
  4. I don't think Zimmerman is realistic at this point and probably not worth risk of a huge contract at this point in the Brewers development. We lose so much salary this year that Garza's contract to us is really no big deal so there's no rush to trade him. Give him some time to regain his value and hopefully move him at the deadline next year. My guess is he was pitching hurt all year due to the clause in his contract about going on the DL. Well it's good to know Smith has thrown other pitches in the past but he hasn't thrown anything besides FB/Slider in the two years with us so he'd have to put in some time on a curve and change. I'm for giving it a chance.
  5. Yes we don't know if Smith is capable at this point after 3 years in the pen right now. Would probably have to do it is 2-3 innings initially with Lohse/Thornberg ready to step in. My logic on bringing it up months ago was simply that he appears to have the best 'stuff' of anybody on the staff, yet we're only getting 60-70 innings per year. 6'5 230 pound lefty with a huge slider. Of course the question is what will his 3rd pitch be, but there is a great frame to start with here. For all we know though, Smith and the team have both agreed that he's a reliever only.
  6. I don't think they do what they just did if they were worried about ticket sales. They are expecting to get crushed to finish this season out which is going to kill ticket sales for next year. I believe they felt they were not getting the value they should for him consider how good he'd been the last few years. Also, off the top of my head only a few contending teams needing catching help. In the offseason, every team is on the table.
  7. I'm in the trade him next year if rebounds offensively, which I expect him to. He's been hitting well the last month or so. I think their plan is to trade him but they were in no rush this year with his value being hurt by being hurt and not hitting well. Someone suggested having him play out the last two years and see how he does before deciding, I don't see that as good course. First, it risks that you get nothing back for him. Second, he would be very unhappy with that situation which isn't good for team morale and to have the young players treat a player like that so they won't be as inclined to show any loyalty to us in signing future team friendly deals. Though I don't feel we 'owe him' because he signed a bad deal, it was his choice to sign it. I do feel like you should try to do right by guys in a re-build situation like this one. If you want him around to help out with the rebuild give him the peace of mind of putting 30-40mil in the bank. If you don't, trade him by next deadline so he can play for a winner and try to earn a good contract from that team. Other players notice this type of thing and view you as a professional organization and that reputations gets out to the league, rather than being viewed as bush league like Miami or others.
  8. Simplest thing right now is to let Thornberg get a few starts in Lohse's place. If he struggles then bring Cravy up and give him a few. I was at the game yesterday and was surprised to look up and see his fastball was only hitting 91, seemed to be popping and having more on it, I was expecting it to be 94 or 95. And it seemed to play faster than 91, tt could be his delivery or something I guess. I then also realized I spent 5 innings watch Lohse throwing out BP so anything looks faster than that.
  9. Yes if it was 2011 Zimmerman would probably be all over coming home but not now. I'd expect him or Price as Cubs next year, maybe both. Lohse should go to mop right now and Thornberg or Cravy get some starts to finish the year and see how they do. Nelson, Peralta, Jungman, Garza, then pick between Cravy/Thornberg/Davies for the 5th. I brought up Will Smith a couple months ago as a starter and it was uniformly disagreed on by everyone here based on the few starts he had in KC and his splits. I thought when we got him that the plan was to be a starter but it never materialized.
  10. Yes he's cooled down from the May hot streak, did we really expect 1.000 ops going forward. I've generally watched most games from May until now and still think he's consistently hitting the ball hard, I'm not about to look up the BABIP the last month or so but I would guess it's lower. As far as the hitting to right field thing, the vast majority of pitches he gets are low and outside so he doesn't really have a choice. IMO, it's actually a sign at how 'professional' of a hitter he is that he's been able to make this adjustment and still get hits and hits the ball hard a lot, including doubles and homers.
  11. Well yea I'd do that too but that would be the best of both worlds, don't think that was an option. Seemed the choice was Flores or that CF with the contract.
  12. I wouldn't read much into it, why not ask and see if he'll take a team friendly thing that only gets him through say age 30/31 as they don't really have a CF to fill the gap until Phillips now. But you could add the Wheeler/Flores trade looked like a move towards re-tooling for next year than a full rebuild as being a sign of that too.
  13. Would you rather have those two pitching prospects or Wheeler/Flores? I think I'd lean towards Wheeler but I could probably be talked into the prospects on account of Wheeler not being able to pitch a full season until 2017 and I believe he's a FA after 2019. So even if he is healthy and good again you'll only have him 3 years. I suppose you could trade him his last year though for a good batch of prospects if he's good again though. The top guy seems like he'll be up next year and you'd have full control and maybe a year or two into it you could buy out a couple years of his arbitration if he looks good.
  14. There's plenty of people ripping the FO too if you look around and ripping a lot of the other past prospects for players trades. The trade you're bringing up though isn't really one of them, most would say the Parra trade is win for us. Essentially flipped a 23 yr old OF, where we have other OF prospects already viewed higher, for a 22 yr old kid this year who will likely start for us next year. And got 1 year of quality play for Parra in the year in between.
  15. Dodgers would make a lot of sense with their unlimited payroll. Have Ethier's contract sitting there to take back. No way they're giving up that Seager guy but maybe something could be worked, they seem to get talked about having a strong farm system. Angels just picked up a bunch of old guys to fill their remaining OF spot so they have a hole but I don't know on their system. They trade for guys every year so I would guess it to be a bit weak.
  16. Personally, I'm against trading prospects for trade deadline additions. My memory fails me, but I don't think it's led to a team winning in the post-season since maybe the 2009 Yankees? I can't remember who they added at the deadline or if they added someone. It certainly didn't lead to the Giants winning last year, the Red Sox in '13, the Giants in '12, Cards in '11, or the Giants in '10 There's your quote. I didn't see Hanigan play 19 ABs in person but when the trade went down last year, I saw it went, meh, no big deal on the guy we gave them and Parra is insurance if someone gets hurt, and can platoon some with Davis and come in to play D late in games. If anything I'd be more worried about the pitcher because he's so young, middling OFs guys are 12 for 10 cents. Very difficult to predict which make it and which don't
  17. I had MLB network on for this. All 3 guys said they'd rather have Cespedes to finish this season than Gomez and acted like it wasn't even close. Harold's reason was because he won the home run derby in their home park. Another called him a professional hitter, which I'm used to hear around good contact hitting types. I thought it was an interesting question but I think I'd go with Gomez, thoughts? I'm not an expert on Cespedes so I'm not really sure on his D but I doubt it's Gomez's world.
  18. Yea give an extension to a guy with 3 yrs left and will be 31 at the end. Especially a catcher who's body will be beat up, lets give a 80 mil to pay him until he's 36. If they have any interest in signing him his price will have come down drastically after this season. The real hope is that he rebounds next season and you can clean out someone's farm system. If he'll take a super team friendly great, if not then it's not even a decision
  19. I recall the same, I think it's definitely been a point of emphasis and they want to emphasize D more going forward to accomodate.
  20. It's common for NFL teams to draft QBs early in the NFL draft. When a team drafts a terrible QB early, they're not excused from making a poor decision because the practice of drafting QBs early in the draft is common. I don't understand your logic here. You stated something along the lines that teams should never trade prospects for current players, then something about how recent champions don't. I quickly thought of two players on recent championship teams who did. That's it. And both teams made trades today, STL traded for Lackey last year. trading an OF prospect with little chance to make the bigs = deplating the farm system in your book. OK. This whole thread is ridiculous over a blah prospect we traded away but you saw him do well in 19 ABs in spring training so he's a superstar. Hopefully the kid does well and makes some money in this game but I won't lose sleep on possibly trading away the next Logan Schager.
  21. Is this guy Haniger's dad or something? Braun has 100mil left on his contract and the PED thing hanging over him, the lingering thumb problem, is now getting old, very complicated to trade. The Pence trade is acceptable because A) Pence is an all-star level player and Parra is major league defender and a well below league average hitter, B) the Giants were in a better position to compete in the 2012 post-season than the Brewers were to compete in the 2014 post-season, and C) what the Giants gave up to acquire Pence was a better price than what the Brewers paid for Parra. --so you say you're against trading away people at the deadline for the future but then say it's ok when you think it makes sense and you win the trade. Also, SF just traded for Mike Leake. SF gave up 3 guys for Pence compared to one minor league fodder guy that we gave up for Parra. Parra was essentially a salary dump to us. Essentially we traded Haniger for a starting pitcher next season, great trade imo. Who knows if the guy will be good or not but he'll be in the bigs next year starting for us. Also, when getting Parra he provided insurance for injury down the stretch last year, we didn't have to cash it in but if but he could have been key if we did. Brewers are so dumb, yet another team just gave us more for him for only 2 months whereas we had him for that plus a year. Heck, maybe they should have put Braun on the DL for a bit last year with how bad he was hitting and let Parra play more. IMO, the Parra trades are a huge win for MKE.
  22. I didn't compare Parra to being as good as them. Just that it's common and those guys were on recent winners. You say no plan. Here is their plan the last few years: maintain a playoff caliber team as long as possible, on years when things are going well make moves that increase playoff chances. When you're no longer a playoff contender, trade off as much as possible to rebuild for the next run.
  23. As I posted in the Parra trade thread, it's something I believe happened by total accident. Do you think the Brewers had this plan in place at the time of the trade for Parra? Are you serious? They were in first place. Their plan at the time was to make the playoffs and try to win the WS, the team fell apart and here we are Their clear plan right now is to rebuild. I don't know what's not clear about it? Lucroy will be traded in the next year or so, they need him to start hitting again and stay healthy. Braun is it's own separate issue that's been beaten to death on here already.
  24. I think I'd rather have the P we got back for Parra than the OF we gave up to get him too. So you say the Pence trade is ok because it worked? If they had a philosophy like yours that you should never trade it wouldn't have happened, you don't know unless you try. All I was saying, is trades like this have nothing to do with it as all teams do it. FYI, Chris Archer came to TB in Garza deal to the Cubs as again it's commonplace. What were the brewers supposed to do? they hit on all those hitters at the same time but only one P in Gallardo. Welp, it didn't work out because we're week on pitching, we give up and trade everyone or try to make the best of what did pan out and go for it. They were up 1-0 in the NLCS with home field in the NLCS and WS, the players just didn't pull it out. 2012 roster was loaded to compete for it all too but early bullpen collapse killed it. I remember a lot of Prince for Matt Cain talk back in the day.
  25. Right it's completely commonplace. Off the top of my head from WS winners recently, Hunter Pence was a midseason pickup, Matt Holiday too. Boston does it all the time, though I can't think of a significant one in 2013. Rip the Brewers all you want, but the difference between us and perennial contenders is our core was built around hitters and not pitching. Teams like Giants and Cardinals seem to be consistently bringing up their own pitching, they also have the money to keep players too, we don't. TB has brought up tons of pitching but can't pay to keep them. Other than that it's been a revolving door in the playoffs really.
