  1. I'm not bent on anything. I said earlier that I don't hate this deal or anything, just that I don't see the need for it. And I'm not disregarding points. I am not disputing that he does a fine job framing pitches. And I'm realizing now that I confused arbitration hearings with Type A free agents. The Type A rankings use the Elias stats, not arbitration hearings. My mistake and apologies.
  2. It would be great if the Reds gave up a big piece for Marmol. He's nothing special, not as good as Madsen for sure.
  3. I would have no issue with someone calling him an average catcher, but that doesn't change the fact that I didn't see a need to guarantee this money. I don't expect him to break the bank at any point, and he's under Brewer control that entire time either way. I don't hate this deal or anything close to that. Just that I don't really see a need for it.
  4. Out of curiosity, do you know this for a fact? Like, there's pretty much no way that a player and his agent would research every stat, every comparison, and every analysis and then pick the most positive things to use at the hearing? I would be shocked if, say, Lucroy was going to an arby hearing this week and he didn't have that Fangraphs piece printed in triplicate. But maybe I'm being totally naive. Arbitration rulings are based on Elias, which uses the crappy RBI type stats.
  5. The reason for pointing out that he's average-ish offensively is to question the reason for this contract in the first place. It's not so difficult to find a 2 WAR catcher that they need to guarantee money to someone who hasn't even done that yet for the next five years.
  6. -Jack Moore This is the type of thing that won't show up in arbitration anyway. They look at archaic things like RBI, so it shouldn't be used in defense of this extension. He's definitely not one of the best catchers in the NL. He was tied for 12th in the NL in WAR among catchers. Kottaras had half the WAR as Lucroy in 1/4 the plate appearances.
  7. Catchers in general are below average hitters. He has been a little worse than the average NL catcher hitting but not by much. AVG / OBP / SLG / OPS AL 0.238/0.305/0.391/0.696 NL 0.250/0.320/0.388/0.708 MLB 0.245/0.313/0.389/0.702 Lucroy 0.265/0.313/0.391/0.703 Yes, that is exactly what I was referring too. I said he's actually been below average offensively. You only proved my point.
  8. I have to think eventually one of these deals are going to come back to bite the Brewers. Gallardo and Braun (the first one, at least) are one thing. Lucroy is another. He's not an elite talent, and he has actually been below average offensively in each season. Sure he's likely to get a bit better, but this is still somewhat odd to me.
  9. They're now 2-14 in their last 16 games against teams currently in the playoffs. They aren't going anywhere, and honestly, I'd rather have pick 10 or 11 than pick 16 with a first round exit in 4 or 5 games. They should have blown it up earlier in effort to get an even higher pick.
  10. I don't know. I know Mayo is a freshman, but his basketball IQ is pretty terrible. Jacking up threes with nobody under the basket, poor decisions on the break, bad turnovers... I've thought the same thing about Cadougan, Blue, and Jamil Wilson at times as well. From what we've been hearing, it sounds like recruiting is getting even better for both UW and Marquette. Hard to get excited about that now, though. Tonight sure sucked.
  11. I believe what he meant was, had the Badgers taken a timeout to draw up a play, they would have been left without a timeout for the ensuing inbound play. Watching Marquette, I love when refs wait to see a guy miss a shot before calling a foul.
  12. His defense was always awful. When he isn't scoring either... Yeesh.
  13. Ugh. Such a gut punch. Man.
  14. Josh Gasser looking really passive offensively. And Bo has made a mistake in keeping Berggren out all half. The game has almost gotten away from them and he just kept him on the bench.
  15. Lohse and Westbrook in their first two games? All this is doing is reminding me how bad their rotation was last season. Ugh.
  16. Can't it be both? They're fun to watch at this moment, but their future is pretty miserable.
  17. The defense is already accounted for, if he were an average defensive 3B the contract would be a huge steal. No way. He really needs to be a first baseman at this point, and a first baseman at his age with his numbers would never have gotten 3 years/$36 million. That's when you're looking at one year/$7-10 million type deals, a la Carlos Pena.
  18. Alive 2007 by Daft Punk.
  19. Another reason why the Ramirez contract sucked.
  20. Definitely interesting that Pomeroy's odds are the opposite of what you'd expect. He has UW with a 52.5% chance of winning, and Marquette with a 47.1% chance. I guess it shouldn't be that surprising, since he has always liked UW more than Marquette, but still interesting. He has UW with a 1 in 18 chance of winning it all. Marquette as 1 in 54.
  21. Winner
  22. Pretty much exactly how I feel. I'm actually relieved they aren't playing a higher seed at this point. Makes it a low pressure game, and the Badgers seem to play at their best when people keep counting them out. I love all the jokers who couldn't stop singing the praises of Florida St. and Vanderbilt. It seemed like every other television "expert" had those two teams squaring off in the Elite Eight, and I just never bought it. I actually have UW knocking off Syracuse in my pool, although I admit it was a bit of playing the odds since I expect Ohio St. to make the Final Four out of that bracket anyway. But I agree that they certainly have a good shot. Marquette, on the other hand, will be favored to make the Elite Eight. They've had such a great year. Buzz is the best.
  23. Saw the clip of that Dekker shot this afternoon. I think the most notable thing about it is the way he reacted. No jumping up and down or anything. Just raised his arms calmly in the air, as though he was saying 'Just did what I'm supposed to do.' He was yelling, but definitely not reacting the way you'd expect a high schooler to react in that situation. I cannot wait for him to get to Madison. Edit: Just found this quote from him after the game. 'I said I didn't want to tie it. I was just gonna win it. And they said..."okay."'
  24. Solid offensive first half for sure for the Badgers. You'd like to see the post defense improve in the second half, but obviously you can't complain about the nice lead.
  25. The great thing about this one is he just kept going. The other guys broke up laughing after 30 seconds or so. And that Kelly Gruber reference was amazing.
