  1. The run expectancy matrix shows that bunting was the wrong move, though it's a pretty narrow differential and most managers would bunt there, so I can somewhat give him a pass there. As so many have said though, how can you have Yuni be the one to bunt? Of course, I wouldn't have bunted anyway because the slow-running Fielder was the lead runner. It was just stupid overall to not use Kotsay or Green and let them swing away.
  2. It's apparently pointless for Green to be on this roster.
  3. I'd give Barmes two years in a heartbeat.
  4. Votto is on a serious tear right now, but he'll never win it. I agree that right now Braun is out in front.
  5. Yeah... So this is at best Moment Number 4 in BF history.
  6. I think I'd probably just wait too. Although this exact question could be asked in a different way: Who would be off the playoff roster? Wilson serves no purpose any longer, especially when Weeks comes back. DLC has probably worn off his welcome with his erratic control.
  7. Thanks guys. This move really makes their bench much stronger. Here's hoping Hairston and even Counsell (since he has to play occasionally too) start taking starts from Yuni right away. I also like the idea of calling up Gamel for Wilson before Sept. 1. Wilson is now the fourth-best shortstop, fourth-best second baseman, and fourth-best third baseman on the team. There is no need for that. Even though this has been made much later than it should have been, I am still relieved. I was not convinced they'd do this in time to put him on the playoff roster.
  8. Awesome. Curious to see how they'll use him. I doubt they start him full time, but definitely would like to see him at second and third with Hairston playing more short. Great move that was frankly long overdue.
  9. I would assume. I'm sure this goes back to the "Why do we have 13 pitchers?" thread. Probably Dillard going down... Just my guess there though.
  10. I guess we'll see if my source is truly a source, but I've been told Taylor Green has been called up.
  11. Grilli in for Pittsburgh. Hopefully he's as inhuman as he was the other day.
  12. Wow Saito missed his spot big time. Thanks Castro.
  13. Heh. Lopez had been getting by on smoke and mirrors. After Hart got on, I figured the big guns would rally.
  14. Yeah not a good play but they got lucky. That was ball 4 to Braun...
  15. "Betancourt on the first pitch..." That's button number 3.
  16. Rodrigo Lopez is awful. Brewers will get him eventually. Wolf just needs to settle down.
  17. Football and baseball are entirely different. Most calls in baseball wouldn't take nearly as long to review. Football you look at things like, "Where are his feet? Does he have possession? When does his knee hit the ground? It's not clear from that angle, how about a different shot?" Baseball it will mostly be: Did the ball get to the base before the runner? Was his foot on the bag? It's usually plain to see by the first replay we're shown during a game whether the call was blown. Cut out the manager arguing for 1-2 minutes, and you've actually saved game time. This is all beside the point of making sure you actually get the call right, which should be above all this other noise.
  18. A recent study found that umpires blow 20% of close calls (and that's before even considering their strike zones). Them "doing their job" isn't good enough. Edit: Link
  19. Add Little League baseball to the growing list (NFL, NBA, NHL, tennis) that's smarter than MLB. Here's an article detailing its success. "As of Sunday's consolation game, replay had been used 16 times during the 10-day tournament, with eight calls upheld and eight overturned, according to league vice president Lance Van Auken. The total delay for all 16 calls was about 52 seconds." I'm not a fan of the challenge system for baseball that the LLWS used, but it's embarrassing to see how well and how easily this could work when MLB is so against it. Just throw a replay guy in the press box, have him review it, and it's done in 30 seconds.
  20. I'd like to see a trade of some sort too in order to give Peralta a shot (Estrada as insurance). The obvious choice is Wolf. His ERA this year may be enough to get something of value, even with his fairly hefty salary next season. Marcum is an out-of-the-box idea, but I doubt they get the two good young players you're talking about with just one year left on his deal.
