  1. If Santana had been traded Braun would have moved to right and they would have rolled with Aguilar and Thames at first. The intent was never to keep young players from being blocked or to give them a shot. The plan was to trade Santana for pitching but it didn't happen so now we get story time.
  2. Stop it, just stop it. You interject to every thread your hatred for signing free agent pitchers. It's annoying! (totally in blue)
  3. The point wasn't to compare Cain and Phillips. The point is that Phillips is young and talented. If they are not going to block young players and give them chances, Phillips is that. Particularly when the alternative is to spend 80mil on an aging player. Call bull on it all you want. What you can't do is cherry pick what you want to believe and what you don't. If that situation is bull, then you have to allow for the whole thing to be bull. Apparently they think Suter is a starter nor do they care about the 4th year on Woodruff. What I wold have preferred is for them to have brought in a better arm making how they handled Woodruff and Suter a far less critical decision while burying Miley on the depth chart. If 2019 is the key year, do you not think they could have found a pretty good OF for 80mil? I think they could have...or maybe they wouldn't of had to if Phillips had been given the chance to prove he was decent enough. That 80mil would have been fun to have. There isn't any guarantee that Cain doesn't start to decline this or next year. You can't make that assumption but then totally write off that Phillips couldn't be acceptable (or that Miley is all of a sudden a decent pitcher again). Yelich I have no problem with.
  4. The quote said young players, not young pitchers. Whatever you think of Phillips he is is young and has potential. Certainly worth "taking a chance" on......especially if the alternative is a 32 year old on an 80mil contract. If Braun is only playing first against lefties and he isn't taking time away from Santana then Braun ain't playin much. They tried to trade Santana because he was their most attractive trade piece to obtain some that they don't have. Miley wasn't just "considered", by all reports he was in line to grab that spot. That would certainly see as though he was "blocking" someone younger. I certainly don't think they are all in now and they certainly are not saving it all for later. They are stuck in middling hell. If they are indeed "preserving maximum flexibility" then they have done a poor job if the report above is accurate in that they are very near maximum payroll. I don't see how signing a 32 year old to a five year 80mil contract to nearly max out your payroll is an effective choice given the "plan". The fans came out in force when the plan was to win. When the plan became to be mediocre, they stopped coming out in force. To this day there are posters on here that think the decisions, made by the decision makers, to avoid mediocrity were obvious.
  5. They cannot block young players? Take chances on young players? Why sign Cain when you have a young Phillips to play center? Why was Miley even considered for a starting spot with a young Suter and a young Woodruff ready for those spots? Is Braun, as many here are suggesting, going to play a bunch of RF and block a young Santana? They may have a plan but what was stated above isn't it and it certainly doesn't mean I have to agree with it. I'm not a big fan of accepting things just because "that's the way it is". Fans vote with dollars and if they stop spending those dollars on the Brewers because of a dumb plan, it will matter plenty.
  6. You think Braun playing first is the long silly debate on this board?
  7. What I wish had happened was that the team had acquired a TOR arm. Not my job to figure out how to get that done, DS gets paid for that.
  8. The only drama is whether he can actually do it. It's great news that CC has faith in him. Can't wait to see him play there in real games. Aguilar has to be gone i would think.
  9. I get that. Where is this controllable talent and what do I have to give up to get it? Santana isn't getting it done as they've been trying all off season to deal him for exactly that.
  10. OK, I'll play. What would that look like exactly?
  11. Sounds like right around the ASB, maybe a bit sooner, sounds realistic.
  12. Great post even if I deeply disagree with some of your points. I think I'm right with you on the last paragraph. Just because you can see the flaws on this team doesn't mean you hate the team. Wade Miley doesn't have to be a rainbow colored unicorn.
  13. I lean this way. If DS didn't think the FA's were the right move then so be it.
  14. 2019? May well see that at the end of 2018.
  15. I absolutely applaud Stearns for standing strong and not overreacting and doing something stupid. I am optomistic with Nelson. The news we do have is encouraging. Nelson's rehab and the development of the fantastic four (Woodruff, Ortiz, Burnes and Peralta) are the two things I'm really watching early in the season. In my opinion, they will need Nelson to come back strong and one or two of those youngsters to take steps forward.
  16. Thanks for shout out buddy
  17. Suter was used in so many ways last year, he wasn't asked to go deep into games for most of the season. But you know what, here's what he did in July when he was starting consistently: 6.0 6.1 4.2 6.0 7.0 So not only CAN he do it, he has done it. And if 6 innings is what qualifies as a "#3" then Chase Anderson must be a 4/5 since he only averaged a tad higher than 5.5 innings pitched per start. So you cherry picked a five start stretch where he BARELY averaged six innings a start and that is what you are going to trumpet? What about the one start before that stretch or the eight after where he could barely go 5 innigns? He had a hand full of starts when he first became a starting pitcher and then the book got out. Plenty of pitchers are just fine in a swing role so I'm not buying that excuse either. He should have been used to starting in August and September but that was when he was at his worst. A for effort though.
  18. Eh, you can say it's not a problem but we have 14 big league starts that say it's a big problem. I don't particularly care what he did against minor league hitters where "crafty" plays far better than in the bigs. Agree to disagree on this one because I just don't see any evidence to support your claim.
  19. They may be ahead of schedule but they aren't done. I do agree that acquiring Cain pushed the issue more than it should have been pushed. I think 4/5 is Suter's ceiling, not his floor. A guy who can't get through 5 innings is never going to be considered a 3. If Suter is in the OD rotation I think he gets exposed relatively quickly and relegated to the pen where, ultimately, he doesn't have the tools to be more than a mop up guy and he eventually just fades away then resurfacing down the road a really good pitching coach. Does that person then get demoted for the crappy picks at the top of the draft?
  20. At this point I'm convinced that the FO isn't all that worried about the team record this season. It's all about lining things up going forward. That means starts will be sacrificed to the likes of Miley and Guerra in favor of service time clocks for guys like Woodruff and Burnes. Might as well test a guy like Suter and see what he can really do. Temper the expectations for this season and view them for what they are, a team in the late phases of rebuilding. I don't think that's what they wanted to be, but it's where they ended up.
  21. I'll take Barnes' major league performance over the last two seasons over Hoover's major league performance in a heartbeat. Hoover's had 2 very good full seasons as a major league reliever, in 2013 and 2015. That's 2 more than Barnes has had. Barnes had a good half season in 2016 and a so-so 2017. I think both make the team. With the team still in rebuilding mode I'd say things like options and service time considerations will have just as much of an effect on the choices being made.
  22. Its spring training. Unless something was way off in terms of mechanics or velocity that indicates an injury, I couldn't care less what results the pitchers get from game to game and there are many reasons why. Having said that, a guy like Suter is gonna have blow up games. He just doesn't have the stuff to overcome bad command. We saw this last year. It's what limits his ability to go deep into games. Same issue.
  23. If ever a lineup screamed to have the pitcher batting 8th, it would be this one.
  24. Over Miley? I'd guess one or two wins. Given that they missed the playoffs by one game last year, would you have signed Cobb to that deal going into 2017?
