  1. Back when I lived in the Cities, it was very foggy one day on the way to work...turns out, the "fog" was smoke from Montana fires. Wind makes for interesting scenes.
  2. I found a list of things to do in Denver, but only after you are deceased. So close.
  3. No one wanted to pay him his bonuses and salary. Money doesn't stop being a consideration all of a sudden. My point is, many said he was "done" and not a step up from Burns and CV, yet the Twins, Giants, and Yankees were begging him to come pitch for them. Add all that up, and it doesn't.
  4. Well, he's a Type B, so I have no clue why anyone would expect more than a decent prospect. He's well past the age when many corner OF's fall apart, and heck, 37 is old for any ballplayer.
  5. I am thinking of getting MLBTV.com for the last month of the season, as it's only $15 or $20. I was wondering if someone could explain to me what the difference is between "premium" and regular. HD means nothing to me, so what else would I get for $5 extra?
  6. Not when several teams want him, and he has his choice of where to go. An easily available SP is a guy who is in AAA and available for a song. That's a 6ish ERA guy. Again, when the Twins want you to help get in the playoffs, yet he wasn't good enough to replace Mike Burns...what sense does that make? My point is, there seems to be a feeling that a 5 ERA guy is worthless...not at all. Every team has one, and many have 2-3.
  7. I'd just like to add that many said Penny wasn't good enough when we were trotting Burns and CV out there, yet he's good enough for SF, who is right in the hunt. 5ish ERA guys have value, it's very tough to find that on the street. While I'm the first to admit a guy like Suppan is overpaid, every single team, even a great pitching team like SF, has a placed for a guy projected to have an ERA in the 4.75-5 range. The idea of a team running out 5 guys who will have an ERA of 4.50 or less is pure fiction. If they do, they are one heckuva staff.
  8. Yep, perfect summer for me too. I'd wear shorts all year if it was socially acceptable. I always wore shorts to walk the dog around the block in the Cities, even if it were 20 below.
  9. Casey and a pair of prospects is nowhere near an ace. Escobar, Gamel, and Lawrie maybe. Look what Cliff Lee went for, and add to it because he's cheaper and under team control longer. If anything, those pre-arby guys are overrrated. Guys in arby years still take a ton to get. Garza was dealt in his pre-arby time, and it took one of the best position player prospects in the game. Now, Young has not developed as nicely as the Twins would hope, but he was a top 5-10 prospect. The guys above are top 100, maybe, but not top 10 (Alcides might be top 20).
  10. I think that dollar amunt is absurd, since only FA's see it...pre-arby and even arby eligible guys get far less. The truth is, it's a worthless number, because half the teams have a payroll far less than what it would cost to put together a playoff team. It's like win shares, people use it a couple years, then move on to something else. If it can't be calculated easily, it's worthless anyway.
  11. I would assume it's the alternator.
  12. DH is correct. Though if that were the case, they could have just waited and taken Wright off if they liked someone.
  13. My guess is Hardy, Smith and Dillard Tuesday, followed by Burns and Iribarren when their 10 days are up, followed by a couple more (Salome? Hart? McClung? Colome?) when they get healthy, followed by Gamel when the season is over...did I miss anyone? I wonder who they made room on the 40 for? Lucroy? Heether? Patterson? Katin?
  14. Very well said. No one seems to understand that you can't clean out the farm system every year, you have to pick and choose. I think it's funny people want to trade Parra, and then acquire a "young pitcher who is ready to contribute"...like you're going to find one better than Manny on the market. Much of the improvement in the pitching will come from within...someone goes from 4.70 to 4.30, for example, hope guys stay healthy and revert back to their career norms. I'm sure Doug will bring in an additional arm or two, but it won't be Lackey...probably an arm or two in trade and a veteran FA who is coming off a poor season or an injury. It also makes you look at solid performers differently...many made fun of Dave Riske, and yet, we've struggled to fill that spot (6th/7th inning) ever since he went down last year. A whole team made up of average/just below average pitchers would rank 9th/10th in the NL and be right in contention. You don't need several #1/2 SP's, but you can't have a whole rotation of #4/5 guys either.
  15. If a team only wants JJ for a year, they can just non-tender him. For a team looking for a 2 year solution, JJ fits in perfectly. He may not be worth a lot more, but he is worth more. That's why team control is so important, and why teams hold guys back 'til late May/June all the time. Also, for treams like KC or PIT...with little chance of competing, Hardy has little appeal...except he now is around for '11 as well. He can help you next year, and maybe help you contend in 2011. That may add a couple more teams to the mix, which in theory, adds to his demand.
  16. As weak as 3B is in the bigs, I can't see Lopez not signing a deal to start at either 2B or 3B. If he would accept arby, he's tradeable on a 1y/$5M deal, if there's no spot for him.
  17. I would assume Reno, like most west coast PCL teams, is offensive slanted. Wonder when that move happened...it was in Tucson for years, and that sure seems like a nice match. I do like Cole for what he is, an OF with good OBP, who'll be cheap for a few years. As for Lopez, it sure seems several teams could use a switch-hitting 2B or 3B for a 2-3 year deal, even if he does have a reputation for lapses. Worst case, he'll be plenty tradeable on a 1 year deal, or maybe, he'll be affordable enough to keep (or they'll decide to have him play 3B). No negatives there.
  18. Ross is a more realistic option, to be sure. Teams won't move young pitching often, and when they do, will get a boatload for it...including youg minor league pitching, which the Crew has none of at the higher levels.
  19. It looks like Lopez is going to be an A, so I much prefer 2 picks to Gillespie's below average OPS in LF. Remember, everyone hits in Tucson, just like they do in spring training, it's an altitude/dry air thing. He may well be a solid OBP reserve, but that's not a whole lot. His high draft pick status was based on him developing wood bat pop, which never happened.
  20. Childbirth, without complications, is pretty simple, as anyone who has spent time on a farm knows...no hospital/doctor needed.
  21. First of all, there's some rewriting of history going on here, the 2008 staff was 2nd in the NL in ERA, so let's not pretend the pitching has always been poor. The Brewers are not going to be able to bring in the top tier of FA every year, so that leaves them to develop it from the system. The next tier is Looper and Suppan, and that's what they've brought in, and exactly what they'll bring in next year and beyond. Last I checked, the Crew is still on a 85-86 win pace if you remove Parra's and CV's starts. Yo's been exactly what we hoped, Bush, Suppan, and Looper have all been less effective than desired (though Dave and Jeff have both been at less than 100%), Burns and McClung split the games they started. Was there a lack of depth? Yes, as CV was forced to start. However, Parra simply has been off the charts bad, but will be back, as he has the 2nd most talent in the rotation, is LH, and throws 92-94...imagine how much it would cost to pry a talent like that away from a team. Some of the improvements are going to have to come from the existing players returning to their career norms, or close to it. Is there any AAA guys ready to help? Maybe in some low importance spots, like middle relief. I personally hope JJ brings back some pitching, but realistically, after his off year, the Crew can't be choosy...if they are offered a near ready OF and a AA P, they'll probably have to take it.
  22. Joe, Soup is owed $14.5M, and Bradley $21M, that's after this year.
  23. The minute ratings for the Kennedy specials indicate many of us had no interest in the coverage. Let's not forget, those Northeastern storms are covered for days, while a huge Midwestern snowfall is lucky to be mentioned. The networks truly think the US is incredibly interested in a Massachusetts' liberal senator's death...they lack an understanding of much of the country. Wellstone's death got a mere fraction of the coverage, and it was far more interesting because of the election. It's a Kennedy, networks based in the Northeast thing.
  24. I've seen a lot of dumber ideas. Probably not an option because they will not talk to each other, but it makes some sense on paper...if Hart can play CF, or Cameron is kept and Hart is shopped, of course.
