  1. The fact Davis is a FA is a good thing to me, as I don't mind working pitching especially on one year deals. And yes, he has had good numbers in the bullpen, but RP to SP conversions, after say 25, are few and far between...they happen (Looper), but are a lot like sub 6 foot RHSP...they exist, but not often.
  2. Considering Davis has a sub 4 career ERA in the NL, I'd sure prefer him. Correia has never had any success until this year, and could well be a product of Petco, though his away stats are about equal, anything is possible in 6 starts.
  3. PIT is close to being right in the race...their new regime is trading the old and getting young, cheap players in return. They might only be a year away, but more likely two. I have not heard a word about Maholm being available, as they are mostly dealing free agents to be and guys that are overvalued (Capps, the mythical "proven closer").
  4. Escobar would be a pretty good prospect if he was just an ok fielder, being 22 and always being young for his level. He's top 5 in MLB by the end of the year.
  5. NYC shows up as one of the safer big cities according to many stats. Compared to DC and Detroit, I would feel far safer in NYC.
  6. Escobar has been raved about defensively for years. He gets on base well for a SS, and has always been young for his age. The only reason he is not the best prospect to come along in the last decade is because they've had other phenoms also.
  7. As lanky as the average Latino teen is, seeing who sticks seems like as good a strategy as any. Escobar alone makes the last few years a huge success in Latin America.
  8. He's Counsell without the versatility and a huge contract. BOS may well waive him, or end up trading him for another terrible deal.
  9. Harry Truman's library is there, you can all day (or two) if you are a history, or WW2 buff.
  10. Haren is one of the best pitchers in the game, and is signed long-term...I can't believe he'd be moved, and unless I hear ARI is taking offers, will assume he is not on the market.
  11. A few years ago, Escobar would have been like losing Prince, Braun, Weeks, and so on. Doug knows he can't trade 6+ years of mostly cheap production for a half season or 1.5 years of a player. Laporta was limited to 1B/LF, and maybe below average defense in RF, and the Crew had guys in those spots. CC was also a CY Young winner, who is only available once a decade or so. It was a perfect storm, certainly not one that comes along every year. Escobar, Gamel, and Lawrie are all probably untouchable. I'd say Cain might be the best player available, or Salome, in an overwhelmingly big deal.
  12. I'd look at what mutual funds have done the best, pick 3-4 (depending on how much you can afford to invest, most let you set up an automatic $50/month direct withdrawal) and get started today. For individual stocks, set up a pretend portfolio on Money.com or something like that. Sharebuilder is dandy if you have small amounts to invest, but that should be a small percentage (20% or less) of your total. If you only have $50/month, pick a fund that is meant for someone that is your age. Everybody has 'em now.
  13. Counsell has simply been outstanding, offensively and defensively. He's a better choice than Gamel right now.
  14. Francouer does have upside, but he's not for a contender to give playing time to. With SEA's emphasis on defense, he might be a good fit for them.
  15. Parra will be a part of the rotation in '10. He'll be very cheap, and they have no pitching prospects at all.
  16. I don't see a bunch of AA kids in the bigs in the middle of a playoff race, needless to say. Barring injury, the OF is set, and I think they like the reserves as well.
  17. It's the big leagues, you play whoever gives you the best chance to win (if you're a contender). Most games, right now at least, I'd go with Craig and Casey, and Macha seems to agree. You can make an argument they should send him to AAA and have another lefty bat on the bench, but I'm not sure why anyone thinks Gamel is a better option than either incumbent. Mat's going to be penciled into a starting spot somewhere in '10. Today, he's not.
  18. I don't see Heether as a better alternative as a PH, or at 3B, especially versus a RHP.
  19. Right now, any P they pick up only has to be better than Burns or Narveson. They could add Snell and another P and be far from overloaded.
  20. Right now, the Crew will go with the best 25 man roster, taking salary into account, as this is the real world. Last year, they won the wildcard by a single game. Right now, Counsell is far better defensively than Mat, and his OBP is outstanding. Ditto for McGehee. They are not in rebuilding mode, and are not going to play a prospect just to play him. It's the big leagues, it is not meant to develop. Gamel is up until a better alternative comes along.
  21. RBI's are directly correlated to RBI opportunities. Katin has good players hitting in front of him, and if Gamel was hitting in that spot, he'd lead the league in RBI's. Katin is making a case for a 40 man spot, because you can't teach power. The fact he can defend in RF makes him too much like Nelson Cruz to disregard, but to be anything more than a platoon candidate, he needs to get his OBP up above .300 more...few players help the team getting out 70% of the time in a league where Mike Burns is a very good SP. Needless to say, he'd have some awful looking 0'fers if he were brought up right now.
  22. I just pondered the same thing at Ramblings (click below if you wish), so great minds must think alike.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Snell is a buy low candidate, and he has some salary guaranteed for next year, but he's better than Burns and Narveson, and his potential is he might just "find it" away from the negative nellies in PIT. Still just 27 as well, that's a good age to take a flyer on.
  23. Lopez would push Gamel to AAA, as Counsell/McGehee/Lopez would have 2B/3B covered. Hall is unmovable barring his release.
  24. Some of the threads are really being cluttered up with the above, making them really tough to get through. 90% of them are just total wastes, chat room type stuff. Isn't that against the rules? An example would be the stuff in the minor league link forum, which is Jim's quality links and a bunch of "Wow, Jim hit a fly ball to the warning track!" style posts.
  25. I am currently working on a piece of fiction, and had a couple questions about the modern day US Army. Specifically, how much say does a soldier have in the place he/she is stationed? Does a person with a lot of seniority (say 15 years of service) have more say than a new recruit? Also, what is a "dream sheet"...I assume this is a request sheet of where they would prefer to be, but that's just a guess. Any answers here or in a private message would be appreciated.
