  1. Don't you have to call in for that? You used to, but maybe that's changed.
  2. If he keeps that up at AAA, he'll be up somewhere, because Doug won't keep him in Nashville if DC or SD calls and says they want him in the big leagues. Melvin never stands in the way of a veteran to get a big league check. Might get a decent replacement for him, but at that point, Doug would either put him on the 25 man or trade him to the team that wants him in the majors.
  3. Briggs, Julio was brought in down 2, then removed after the Crew went ahead (maybe was PH for). He's still the bottom man on the totem pole.
  4. My brother said last year the Mets' announcers raved about Hall, and compared him to Brooks Robinson. If they see Wright every day and said that, he's got a shot. Nothing would help Hall's trade value than raising his OBP a bit and winning a meaningless defensive award.
  5. As of this second, 5 seats are in 111, row 18 for face at the team site. If those are gone when you check, just try back a few times a day, some group tiks will be returned and you'll have several chances.
  6. White Castle is a love 'em or hate 'em thing, but I check their web site at least every 3 months to make sure one is not closer than the Twin Cities. A sack, hold the pickles, is a oniony treat, with ketchup for dipping. Other than that, I usually get a mushroom and swiss where ever I go. A&W has a good one, had that today.
  7. Macha is not going to embarrass himself. However, I'm sure he will make clear to guys he expects strikes, as he will allow guys who throw strikes to get out of jams, and the high pitch count will force him to have a bit of a quick hook with those who don't. I'm sure the weather is not helping pitchers to get in the groove. It has been cold and wet often thus far.
  8. There are some benefits to a low interest mortgage, but many of us would give them up in a second to have a home paid for.
  9. If they can get both LH's and RH's out, they are guys like CC and making a bijillion dollars. Relievers, almost by definition, have flaws. Most only have one or two pitches they use 90% of the time. It's rare they can have success against the opposite hand with no variety. Even if they have 3-4 decent pitches, no one wants to get beat with their 4th best pitch when you're pitching to 3 batters. Being a reliever in itself lowers how many pitches you throw.
  10. I'd simply pick the most attractive real estate gal...we've used a couple guys over the years, and other than pick up a commission, they did little. Also, I'd look for a buyer's specialist, as they won't have 20 houses on the market to be fielding calls about. Any buyer's agent will work for you, look for houses that work, find potential problems, and so on. You can look on the internet and get a good idea nowadays. We looked at 20-25 houses, and now, we'd probably eliminate many online and look at 5. My wife knew the house she (we) was going to buy as soon as she saw it on the MLS report that he printed up for us, and now, all that is online. Doesn't Lending Tree give you several different banks best offer just by filling out a form? Your bank is most likely to deal with you, or the places that do this all the time, like Ditech. Once you're pre-approved, you can wait forever to buy a house, as long as your income does not change. You may need to get a new approval every 60-90 days, but no problem. You can negotiate closing, quick or slow. You can close as quick as a week or two after the sale if the house is empty, and the seller is local. Don't forget to do a house inspection, and insist the seller pay for it. If they refuse and the house is more than a few years old, move on. In a buyer's market, I assume most have already done one.
  11. It is much easier to locate them walking uphill...because they're closer to your eyes. It's almost related to the "high fastball looks so big" phenomenon. The problem with eating instead of selling is you need so many, as they cook down. A family of four might need a couple pounds, and that's worth what, $30-40? Easy call for me, as being red and itchy at the ER sucks.
  12. I have never heard of a poisonous mushroom that looks at all like the morel. In the Richland Center area, it used to be easy to find 20-50 pounds a day, perhaps even 75-100 if you had a known spot where they grew every year. They used to sell for $5-10 a pound, but that was the early 80's. It was common for guys to go out for a couple hours after work and collect a plastic bagful (like a grocery store would give you). My uncle would "hunt" from dawn to dusk in years when they were plentiful and/or selling for a high price. I am very allergic to them, so I cannot eat them, but they are far more flavorful than any other mushrooms. My dad would sometimes find them along the fence line when he was out doing field work. They are all over, or at least, they used to be. Not sure if dutch elm disease has affected their availability or not.
  13. First of all, thanks to Jim (Mass Hass to many of you) for clearing it with the powers that be to promote the fact that for the entire month of April, Ramblings will be "presented by" an individual, group, or whoever comes up with the largest amount of cash...all of which goes to a charity that the winner decides upon. So, for example, Brian could decide to donate $100 to his favorite cause and have Brewerfan.net be the sponsor. As of now, the top bid is $50, so start your bidding at $51, please. Thanks again for the publicity!! Click on the link below for more details.
  14. In most cases, teams do not want to trade for a guy if they are going to be in on a FA. I agree with Robert as to the trades made by the Crew...I see a couple relatively minor ones.
  15. Maybe they should have charged $25-30 to be on the streets of Philly...apparently, that's too high a price for the Madison ne'er do wells, as they've controlled Halloween pretty well of late.
  16. There's little doubt good seats are held for new accounts. What Robin did is perfectly within his rights, and "sneaky" is often a fine way to go about finding stuff out.
  17. Wakefield is a bargain at $4M...they've announced he'll be back.
  18. I just remembered that when they were adding onto Luther Hospital in Eau Claire, rumors abounded that workers were seeing ghosts, and supposedly some walked off the job. I was working 80 hours a week at the time, making $6/hr and $4.25/hr, and the idea someone would leave a $15-20/hr job because of this almost knocked me down. I told everyone I would tell the ghost how much I was making, and happily keep hammering/sawing away.
  19. Lucky it didn't happen tomorrow or Saturday night...it'd be Detroit Part 5.
  20. Same reason Jeter is playing SS and ARod, a very good SS back in the day, was moved to 3B. It also explains how you can spend a kizillion dollars and finish behind Toronto...in 4th place. Those of us who like what BAL is doing, albeit a few years away, can easily imagine the Yankees winning 70 games and finishing last in 2011.
  21. That sounds like a fair package, but BOS has Lowell and Youkilis at the corners, and Ortiz as DH. Lowell was overpaid last year, so he has little value. I'd also prefer a bit more of a proven SP than Clay. Not expecting them to give us a Yo type, but a Parra type would be more like it.
  22. He might get a 1-2 year deal that pays him $4-5M a year...but 1 y/$2-3M is most likely. $8M? He'd take it before Doug got to the "tion" sound, and the Crew would be a laughingstock, and deservedly so, of failure to plan equals planning to fail.
  23. A game or three is fine, especially if UW-M is still a sponsor. More than that, they need to shell out some rental payments.
  24. I'm sure the Crew would have no problem with you buying tickets now and then "upgrading" if you decided to later. To get the best price, you need to pay early. I'm sure they will be promoting some packages as Xmas gifts too, so they need to know what seats are open.
  25. I have nothing to add of actual scariness, except for this Reader's Digest like tale from my part-time retail days... I was working in the storeroom at TRU, where I was one of the slowest, worst builders of any kind. I was working with this 16/17 year-old who was a whiz, could put together a bike in 10 minutes, anything in 20. He was a nice guy, but odd. Out of the blue, he asked me if I believed in ghosts. I said, no, not really. Undeterred, after a 30 second pause, he said, "I do. I used to talk to one almost every night. He'd come into my room right after I would turn out the lights, before I'd go to sleep." I just let him talk, as I thought he was most certainly nuts, or just telling a story. Finally, I kind of realized a gap, so I said, "Used to? How long since you talked to him?" With all seriousness, he said "It's been over 6 months. He hasn't showed up to talk to me since I stopped drinking and smoking pot". It all made more sense then.
