Still bothers me that RHSP 1 isn't Burnes. Graduated or not it's Burnes. -
Brewers sign Gyorko - MLB deal

Looks like a .781 OPS would be average to slightly above average. MLB 3B 2017-19: And its better than what they got from 1/2 a year of Hiura and Shaw. On paper this completely works. In theory and in cost effectiveness it works. Math works. Those opposed think they can see the future or want a dramatic increase off last years offense. -
Well turns out the brass and I agreed. With Gyorko being specifically named. Cishek has flown the coop. That makes me grumble. So... McHugh if the elbow checks out as the opening day closer Sanchez as a reliever lottery ticket on the cheap Walker as a upside swing man Need that SU guy. Who is an under appreciated arm who keeps putting up stats. Kintzler maybe? I'm also pretty interested in Cashner as a reliever. His K/9 spiked out of the pen. Oddly his BB/9 did as well. I think him on a FB 55 CH 30 SL 15 mix might work. No sinkers or curves.

This tiger charm I bought must have worked, I haven't seen a tiger in my yard all year. That is basically the logic you just used. You can't know anything by what we have done this year. Stearns isn't going to spend money just to spend it, he is going to make the deals he thinks make sense. We have no clue at all where the payroll could go. The payroll cutting thing is not brand new. It has been reported nationally, specifically by Bob Nightengale. https://www.brewcrewball.com/2019/12/2/20992902/milwaukee-brewers-plan-on-cutting-payroll-in-2020-david-stearns-says-team-will-remain-competitive Bob Nightengale is not on the level of Ken Rosenthal, but he is also not a bum. You don't get a Moose and Grandal on a 1 year deal very often. They splurged on offense because 1 the rare opportunity was there 2 they had some young arms volatility to protect Blue moon opportunity got you dreaming. Last year was a pay spike caused by a very cold market. You zig when the rest of the league zags. -
Thank you because as I was reading this I was feeling like "I must be crazy" again. Narvaez has recently produced 30 OBP worse than Grandal but the rest offensively is the same. Grandal who hit mostly 2nd 4th and 5th. He's actually been quite similar to Moose who hit 3rd 4th and 5th. But he's not a middle of the order bat? Where's the middle of the order? He cost 3 mil and he rivals them offensively and that's not big? Castellanos can't play defense either but he is big? Makes me feel crazy. I feel like this team doesn't have a shortage of middle of the order bats. Yelich is an MVP, Hiura is a middle of the order bat. Braun/Smoak platoon projects to middle of the order numbers. Garcia is probably more 5-6 than 3-4 but he's not far off. Narvaez is a monster vs RHP. He's a middle of the order guy 60-66% of the time. If big is Chapman. I don't know what huge is. Pulling Chapman in 2020 after Yelich in 2018 would be epic.

It's kind of hard to say that after what we just saw in 2019. 2019 was a complete disaster. They flipped stuff to get Pom and Lyles. They made a huge run. They got the 5th seed. I think Smoak Braun is a really nice platoon at 1b. I think Sogard Gyorko is a very solid platoon at 3b. Solid is ok because Hiura is a plus plus bat at 2b. Garica is absolutely a starter and having Gyorko to play some 1b allows MKE to sub in a non-starter level OF bat for CF and CF only. None of that is a stretch. It's also very possible this was the plan all along. 25 man roster, platoon 1b to manufacture a good player and have a good bench bat. 26 man roster (must be 13 batters) manufacture 1b and 3b to steal 2 productive positions cheaply through a platoon. I really don't know how you can call Smoak a depth piece. I refuse to consider Garcia a depth piece. The offense is not a problem. The pitching staff can not lack the stability it lacked in 2019. Yet in 2019 they still were in contention enough to buy on the cheap. Offense needed this 1 small domino. It's now whoasolved. Pitching still needs some style points, even if they are buy low risky upside options. Gotta buy a near handful of them and hit on 2. -

I feel like that is letting them off the hook with a convenient excuse. "hey, we tried." I don't think they went in intending to "slash" payroll, but I do think they intended to spend less than most want them to spend. Convenient or rational? Every single outlet that projected where players would end up price wise looked at 2018 and 2019 and expected a small bump up on more of the same. 2020 has been a noticeably hotter market. Other than Asdrubal there were no sweetheart deals MKE was missing out on. Even the guy we didn't get who I wanted badly, Cishek, went for a touch more than expected. I'm a big believer in FOs zigging when the rest of the market is zagging. I think Stearns has done a great job of that and hasn't over-extended out of haste. It's real tempting to pay for options that seem more secure. It's real tempting to chase little upgrades. It's almost always wasteful. Safe is expensive. Little upgrades don't accomplish much. Through every major sports there are teams who prospect on the guys who fall through the cracks and while the high level success rate isn't great, the failure rate or negative impact rate is right on the tip of zero. If you can't buy the stud, find the cheapest option who can accomplish the goal. That's really what Gyorko is. I mean I know you can do this for a number of players but if this guys coming off his 2015-2018 season's into this market, we aren't talking anything close to the same contract. -

I'll shorten it up for ya. Bad GMs not spending = cheap Great GMs not spending = flexibility I like leaving options open especially when the need for the position, in theory, has been solved without denting our flexibility at all. MKE rolls into the trade deadline with cap space, they can absorb cash dump expirings for PTBNL/Cash. -
Brewers sign Gyorko - MLB deal
TJseven7 replied to KeithStone53151's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
You can within reason though. Shaw was a huge surprise and Aguilar was a big regression. If MKE has another Shaw surprise they are absolutely looking to trade in a replacement but Spangs Perez and Saladino would have been more of a surprise if they actually contributed. They're all scrubs. Arcia's bat level scrubs. Even Arcia has more upside to him than they did. I don't see guys who have an expectation of zero upside, a split that can't be used as a tool and zero offensive role on our roster right now. That's the difference. Sure anyone can fall off a cliff but 400 ABs last year came from guys who stepped off a curb. This year we have guys who'd have to fall off a roof to be that bad. The teams deeper and there is a better cushion for error to be absorbed. -

Brewers sign Gyorko - MLB deal
TJseven7 replied to KeithStone53151's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Let me start off by saying. You sir, are the best. THE BEST! Next... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I pointed to this being a real possibility a week ago. I stated that 3b was a minor need and that the the Crew could create the same offensive production with a minor signing and I even pointed at Gyorko as the guy. I'm surprised more people haven't jumped off a cliff. Really easy reason why. Full season of Hiura > Full season of Moose The Gyorko/Sogard platoon simply has to replace the Hiura half year mashed together with Shaw. They can absolutely do that. As you stated. They lose about 30 OBP points at C. Garcia vs Braun is a slight tip to 2019 Braun. But 1b looks better. Hiura > Moose. SS should upgrade with Urias. Sogard's last 3 years vs RHP and Gyorko's career vs LHP platoons stronger than 1/2 Hiura and Shaw. Cain can rebound. Yelich is Yelich. Bench ABs from Saladino Perez and Spangs were about 400 AB of that even Arcia can replace by himself. This offense is exactly where it was last year. The theory here by DS is brilliant. How it will turn out is anyone's guess. No one has a crystal ball but the theory and numbers check out. NOW GO SPEND ON THE PEN! -
Because we are a fan base laments our bad luck by asking "why we don't deserve good things." Then spends 2 months discussing how we can trade away our good things. Frankly I'm stunned we haven't seen more: Trade Yelich while he still has value. Trade Woodruff because he's not acey enough and we got to get an ace. Trade Hiura for magic beans. Some people hate success. Our record in games where Hader has pitched in the last 2 years. 48-7 51-10 5-3 in the playoffs despite 11 innings and a 1.64 ERA. 7.2 innings of ZERO runs vs the Dodgers in a series. His 1st runs allowed being against Washington. 99-17... we'll just replace him. We need a 3b afterall and after trading him we'll just need a bullpen. If we trade Hader it won't be about making the 2020 team better. It'll be about making the 2021-8 teams a lot better while trying to stay competitive in 2020. You got Yelich who is a once in a generation piece. Maybe longer when you factor in his cost controlled deal. MKE can't buy guys like this on the FA market. You made that deal knowing you had 5 bullets. Why would you waste 1? They have no issues filling in the connecting pieces. DS seems to be able to create a 75-82 win team out of thin air. You need stars to win a title and the day Yelich hits FA those chances take a missive hit. Trading Hader won't change that and it hurts your 2020 shot a great deal. You got to take your 5 shots. As I said, I'd rather scorch earth the farm than deal anything away from the ML team that has a big impact. I don't know why people do not seem to get the opportunity this team has with Yelich Woodruff Hader and Hiura. That doesn't mean you blow the cap to bits and over extend but you certainly don't break it up. The window of opportunity is open. You don't play a part in closing it. You do what you can with in reason to open it further. You capitalize on it. Trading Hader is trying to go in two different directions at the same time. That fails. Trading Davies for Lauer is future building and this is fine because Davies is a connecting piece. Trading for Narvaez is intermediate building and what was given up is very distant. You don't future build with your stars. You trade them when you are rebuilding. If you aren't in, you should be out. Playing the middle keeps the lows up and the highs down. There's no point in that. I hate to make the reference but I actually have been asked to teach guys in dynasty football leagues. It's not the MLB but it is strategy based. The most stunning thing that I commonly have to teach people is that after you've done the hard work of adding in the horses you need to get there that the best thing to do is actually FINISH the job. It drives me nuts. You don't trade out the horses, you make use of them an actually go win. If you don't you'll build and build and build and sit in no mans land and if you are good you'll go to the playoffs 5 out of 6 years and you'll never WIN. If you suck you'll go to the playoffs 2-3 times in 6 years and you'll still never win. I feel that same "beat my head against the wall" urge when I see this thread. Opportunity is there. Take it. It's real simple. Take it. Don't get cute and try to take 1 step back in the hopes it'll take you 2 steps forward down the road. Don't chase the birds in the bush. It's very likely that when you deal the stud, you'll get back players who never add up to the impact of the stud. Dealing stud players only makes sense when you can't win before they become expensive. With MKE, opportunity is there right now. Just take it.

Not even a top 100 player? They barely got a top 100 pick and Hill's an older lottery ticket. That's likely not even equal to a top 300 player. He is 30 points of OBP shy of replacing Grandal's offense and costs 15 million less this year. Will cost about 13 and 11 less the next 2 years. I'm not sure anyone can justify that difference. 30 points of OBP and pitch framing being worth 39 million over the next 3 years? I guess I don't understand what big is because that was a huge get. Unless the bar for big has been set at Yelich, then big = nearly impossible. I'm sorry but Hader is not the trade chip. I've been around here for years and constantly people are whining about wanting elite arms and crying about never home growing anything out of the farm. Now that we have one of the most dominant arms in baseball, people are ready to sign him over because of a host of excuses. They want 30 million thrown at a starter but grumble about Hader's arby. It makes no sense. Hader is 25. His numbers have been sensational every year. His BB/9 went down. His K/9 went up. Yeah HRs went up for him, like everyone else. He's been solid as a rock yearly. The RPs who are volatile are the average ones. He's not one of those. This talk has been bonkers and I feel like I'm one of the few who remembers Hader in games that weren't the playoff loss to Washington. There's a reason why people think they can get a ton for him. It's because he's worth it and MKE won't be able to replace the massive hole that will leave in the pen. A place where this team has stolen wins for the past 2 years.

You do realize that teams will get better video once a pitcher is in MLB right? I am impressed that he had a good start after the Mets were just eliminated from the playoffs the day before. Do you think the Mets players really cared about that game? Context matters. New strategy. Just keep throwing guys who aren't MLB arms at teams. If they don't have video they'll never be able to hit them. Pull guys out of the stands. It's that easy. New market inefficiency. In all seriousness. Batters are going to adjust. What stops him from doing the same? It's part of becoming a professional. Happens to hitters, pitchers, QBs, etc etc. Guys striking out over a guy per inning. That's not a fluke. He always gave up too many HRs. In 30.2 IP he gave up a Corbin Burnes like 10. Gave up 0 in the first 34 innings and 1 in the last 14 innings. Maybe that's ebb and flow, maybe that's an adjustment. Then again, his opponent didn't try? Come on man. 1 hit 10k because they didn't want to play? It's a non-contact sport. You didn't make the playoffs so you can't be bothered to swing a bat at a ball? Let me guess, "Lamar Jackson is hard to defend because the pigment of his skin obscures the hand off" too. That's nonsense and I don't get why you are stooping to it in a sad attempt to prove your point. His team was miserable and every guy on that team had ample reason to check out too. Losing sucks but these guys also have egos. They might not run out a grounder or dive for a ball but they're going to try to hit the ball. No one is content to strike out and get embarrassed. You call it context, I call it exaggeration to fit your narrative. He had a sensational spell, he had a miserable spell, he had a solid spell. No one's saying the first 6 are the norm. Why are you pretending that the middle 6 of 7 are the norm? Why are you pretending that the guys career is shot and now that he's figured out he's just going to get shelled? It's just not reality. Really, what's your axe to grind here because your take is nonsense and I just want to hear your real beef. Did you kill him when someone pointed to him being good and now you are forever bound to proving yourself right regardless of evidence? What's going on here because sense isn't it. -

First 6 Starts: 1.59 ERA Last 9 Starts: 6.65 ERA Break up the stats however you want them to look for you? Is that what we are doing? First 6 Starts: 1.59 ERA Next 5 Starts: 8.28 ERA Last 4 Starts: 4.57 ERA You've never seen a pitcher suck for a month? Ever watch early season Zach Davies? I guess I don't quite get the figured him out thing when he got tagged by the Mets on August 7th only to lay waste to them on Sept 26th. They un-figure him out? Guys not the Cy Young start he rattled off for the 1st 6 starts but to refer to him as simply a guy who got figured out and subsequently shelled is pretty biased for whatever reason. Guy had 4 gems 1 2 5 and 15 6 where he got tagged 7 8 9 10 11 13 5 where he was solid/fine 2 3 6 12 14 You'll see he started amazing. Got tagged. Finished pretty solid. If they figured him out, he corrected. That's real solid for a fringy add in on a trade who got jumped from AA to the MLB last year. -

TJseven7 replied to Matt Breen's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
You mean the guy that got shelled after teams saw his stuff better? Yeah that 4.57 ERA in his last 4 starts really shows how he got shelled the rest of the year. 23 year old starter got rushed into the bigs and puts up 15 starts 5.25 IP per start and posts a 4.46 on the year. Ends with 4 starts at 4.57. I assume he's garbage because he's not in MKE? You must have written off Corbin Burnes. We had plenty of people excited about Peralta heading into 2019 and in 2018 he wasn't better than Yamamoto was in 2019. MKE looks to be planning to start Lauer, he hasn't been much better than Yamamoto has been. He had a bad stretch absolutely. He didn't fold. If you want to pretend his bad stretch was him getting figured out and his careers over, well you go right ahead. -
Good lord, what is with people here. MKE doesn't need to trade Hader or Hiura to pull off a big move. Narvaez was a big move. He was had for a comp pick and Hill. Burnes Peralta Turang Lutz Ashby Feliciano Rasmussen Small Kelly Ashby surely and individually have more value than what we gave up for Narvaez. What is with the defeatist attitudes around here where posters think the Brewers have to give away their superstars to make anything big happen. You buy into the east coast everything in the Yankee's system is gold garbage or something? You are resigned to believe MKE is nothing but a feeder team for the spending giants? Brinson Diaz Harrison Yamamoto got the MVP. Brinson was concerning at that time and Diaz had fallen out of the top 100. Harrison was on a 1 year wonder. Grisham on a 1 year wonder got 2017 and 2018 top 50 Urias. You think the Brewers couldn't trade Turang Burnes Ashby and Feliciano for a heck of a player? You don't deal Yelich, Hiura, Woodruff or Hader. You don't and you can add something pretty significant, some might even say BIG, to this team without dealing away the biggest impact players on the MLB team. Maybe you scorched earth the farm in the process but the goal is to add too the top assets. Not trade them away. This isn't a rebuild team.

Why eat crow? Because these minor trades with very fringey prospects cause the prospect huggers to lose it. When is the last time one of these fringe guys even made an impact for the team we traded them to? Kids 24 and fell through the cracks due to being a HS draft pick. They gave up a promising arm for a rental. I don't think that's good business. You gather as many promising arm talents as possible. The highest impact player Miami got in the Yelich trade to this point was the fringey guy. -

Rasmussen should be seen as the top RHRP in the system. I doubt they want to slow play the age advanced guy (24.5) off back to back TJs. He's one of the few who I see having a MKE spot after the super 2 deadline. The moment AA is sub 1 whip he should head to AAA. Ditto and on to MKE. I'm hopeful he gets some ST burn. Frankly, with where our pen is right now MKE needs him to get here immediately. -

Kodi was always a guy that I thought could put it together. Props like you said for getting something worthwhile out of him. I'd keep my eye on him. Guys got the raw tools. He has literally no control. He's still fairly young though. You can count on anything but LHRP but if he ever finds some semblance of control he should be MLB level. I know the splits suck but you can't live north of 5BB/9. That's the demon he has to slay. -
You forgot Peralta didn't cut it The AAA shuttle was an AAAA dumpster fire. You look at the guys they called up early in 2019. Every guy seems to be 6 era or worse. When Jay Jackson is a stabilizing force, sheesh. I thought CC was a genius in 2018. I wasn't as impressed in 2019. I hope that was more due to lack of options stifling creativity than a return to more vanilla strategy.
-
If you got 2 flat tires, would you just set your car on fire? I mean LF Yelich CF Cain is 2 GGs and RF Garcia neutral. All have range. 1b and SS should be neutral. Smoak Urias and Arcia should be able to do the job. Braun obviously will drag that down when he's there. C is going to be rocky and 2b is going to be bad. I'd like 3b to be at least neutral and Sogard is a good start to that. I'd prefer to worry about 2.5 spots instead of 3.5.
-
See now this is the type of crazy I can get behind. Burnes Turang Lutz Feliciano and Supak? We close yet? That's a haul but that's opening a window and not giving up impact on the MLB squad. 4 years of control fits that 3 year window very well. Offensive force entering his prime. Defensively one of the best in the game at his position. Yeah that's a guy you get silly about, as said (ala Yelich).
