  1. He's coming off a very rough year. That's a lot of money handed to a bounce back gamble. Imagine if the Dodgers spent the same money but spent it wisely like MKE does. They'd destroy everyone yearly.
  2. MKE gave up a lot to get Yelich on his cost controlled contract. They are getting their capital's worth out of him. Just enjoy the ride. I'm all for trading guys at the right time and getting value out of them but usually those guys are players who have an inflated perception and are replaceable. MKE can not replace Yelich. Enjoy the ride and when he's a FA and MKE loses him. It was a hell of a ride. Time to look for the next one. Hiura is up, Braun expires next year, team has money to spend. Enjoy the 3 year window and operate around Yelich as you typically would. He's the feather in the cap MKE usually doesn't have. There's no reason to press. There's no reason to all in. DS needs to build the team he'd typically build and know that he has a huge boost for 5 years. (3 more)
  3. Give us a guy who goes 32 starts, logs 192 innings, holds an ERA of 4, and we can all complain about how he sucks like Davies while he stabilizes the rotation at a bargain basement price. He don't need to defeat Godzilla and King Kong. Well, eventually we'll need him to hold off their buddies for 4 innings.
  4. I guess what irritates me the most is that DS has done everything properly since he walked in the door. That isn't perfect, that's proper. I'm a dork who studies front offices in the NFL. You can see patterns and see who is on the cutting edge with their management strategies. You can see the FOs stacking proper steps as often as possible and every single time they arrive at their destination faster than you'd expect. It's exactly what you see with DS in MKE. Right price, options, turning over every stone, value value value value. The structure of deals. This team shot out of a cannon when he took over and it was due to scrubs. Aguilar, Villar, Guerra, a guy from Korea, Broxton. Doing what he does prevented the team from ever bottoming out because he stacks proper steps and turns over every rock. You see the telling signs of an elite GM (staff) at work. Apparently, plenty of people can't see it. Even last year, he "false" bought at the deadline. The team was on its last breath. He bought to add stability (in theory) and sifted through leftovers and low cost options to do it. He added 2 guys who liked going forward in the process. It gave the impression he bought, and he really didn't. Look what happened next. The guy (and his group) are operating at an elite level. People need to acknowledge that and when they see we signed some 3mil starting pitcher out of Korea their response should be... "Ooo interesting, I can't wait to see how this plays out." Almost everything else has panned out beautifully. Why doubt this?
  5. And it's signings like this that make me embarrassed for factions of our fan base. LOOK AROUND! Roark got 12 mil AAV. Lyles got 8 mil AAV. Gausman got 9-10. Treinen got 10 coming off an awful year. Would any of those guys make you feel warm and fuzzy? Are any of those sure things? It's like a huge number of people have never had to be strategic about anything in their lives. MKE can't afford to be strong everywhere and pitching is often highly inflated in cost. MKE can not afford top end ace pitchers. Can not. I've pointed to the .9 to 1.1 run diff for well over a year now and that there is an easy way to achieve it if you can simply find 1 starting pitcher solidly sub 4 (3.5 range) and then keep the rest under 4.2. Nothing world beating. If your 5 starters can sit at a 4 ERA the pen can drop you dramatically under 4. That's a great staff. There are 30 teams in this league. 6... SIX... were sub 4 era. What's the cheapest way to do that? Guys like this! Guys like Miley, Gio, Chacin, Anderson, Davies and trading next to nothing for a nobody like Lyles. How many times have they pulled serviceable out of thin air. This team was 1 game from the WS one season ago. ONE. In the last 2 years they were in the playoffs twice and NLCS 1 time. I mean I'd understand if you never saw it work but you just watched it work to the tune of 1 game from the WS. I somehow remember they were leading the team that won the WS this year. Leading in an elimination game, without Yelich. Who was on MKE's staff? Strasburg Cole Verlander Kershaw and Darvish right? RIGHT? 3 mil a year. 6 mil if he pitches as a starter. Cheaper than all the other nobodies we've seen sign deals. Low risk, upside, and a guy who can be a 3mil pen piece if it doesn't pan out. Will Roark give back half his money if he flops? Guy started 30 games last year and was at 6.5 IP per start. This is a brilliant signing. It might not work out, but the idea is brilliant. Yet, factions of this fan base complain. There is nothing to complain about with this signing. Welcome the KBO Cy Young to the roster and hope DS did it again.
  6. O.O You know what, forget it. I'm that type of nut job that wants both hands tied behind my back anyway. Makes the victory sweeter. We have a good team and we might not have the biggest bankroll but who cares... run the team wisely and let's get 1. It pathetic to spend like the Cubs and only get 1. With an imbalance like this MKE should never get one statistically speaking. Let's just earn 1.
  7. 14 mil per was as predicted. 1 year makes you wonder how many teams are worried about the elbow. He took a prove it deal pretty fast. I get the interest in him as a bounce back candidate but 14 mil just seems like a lot to me. Plus power SS (but we have options there) he's not anything fancy OBP wise at 3b and that OPS is not special for a 3b either. Seems more valuable at SS than anything else and I don't see the fit.
  8. I liked him as an option. I didn't think for one second that it would take upwards of 10 mil to get him. Lyles was a little steep but this is worse. Sure 1 year is nice but the dollars aren't. Every option I see dry up that goes for more that I expected makes me wonder how rocky this market is going to be for MKE. It sure looks like a players market so far. Maybe not in longevity but certainly on AAV.
  9. When the Brewers non-tendered him I expected them to bring him back at a deal like this. Arby was likely 1 mil too high. This is a fair deal but there are lots of RPs in this range.
  10. I think I read that they would only be signing one or the other, and not spending on both. Can you blame them? People projected him in the 30/5 range. 35/7 is a huge contract. People are saying that this is a sign that MKE can't play in FA with the big boys. Yeah, no kidding. This is 1/4 of our yearly payroll. In a year where we spend up. Great player. Zero interest at that price. Prices are running hot this year. Rendon 180mil over 6 is the next major domino. I want this team to spend but not like that. Give me 10 low level upside guys and middle of the road talents on short term deals. You could get 6-7 for Strasburg money alone.
  11. It'll be interesting to see how he fits in the 3 batter rule. Hopefully he can find a way to be closer to his 1st 4 years and not his last 2 years. He was solid enough to be a back end piece in the pen and has a lefty lefty upside. Cheap enough, good enough. Options. Hope we see the 25 year old him this year.
  12. So you don't think Strasburg couldn't be had for about 4/120?? 5 for 150?? The Brewers could absolutely do that. A lot of these players are more concerned about AAV than anything else anyway. But whatever, if you are comfortable with them throwing stuff against a wall every year and seeing if it sticks as far as their pitching goes, without an incredible amount of luck, you will never see them win a world series the rest of your lifetime(regardless of how old you are now). I love this by the way. If they paid 16mil per year for Cain why not pay 30 mil a year for a pitcher? Yeah we can play 16 so why not DOUBLE IT? 1st off because Cain's instincts in CF won't depreciate with age. The guy could drop his bat to replacement level and still be a 2 war player.
  13. Still base stealing isn't dropping because catchers are getting a lot better at throwing guys out. It's dropping because teams don't like the risk reward of it. Even if you drop the risk its not going to alter that decision dramatically.
  14. This pen is a poor return from Knebel away from being an unmitigated disaster. You have 3 known commodities and 1 is coming back from TJ within the year. Either you like these JAGs (just a guy) way too much or you don't value the pen at all. 2 of them in the pen to start the year, maybe. 1 sure. 5? Just cancel the season.
  15. I agree with your point, but disagree that we got "caught" last year without guys to patch the dam. Gonzalez and Lyles saved the season by patching the dam...but both were mid-season acquisitions, so perhaps that was your point. You'd rather start the year with those options rather than scrambling to find them. Yup that was my point. It took too long to stabilize. The late season run rescued the season but there was a lot of time lost shuffling. Too be fair, Burnes Peralta and Chacin all failed pretty miserably in the starters role and Knebel shook up the pen. That's the exact reason I want the 2nd closer (McHugh) and Suter/Walker Peralta or Lauer stashed in multi inning roles with Burnes in AAA to start. Some of the vets won't work, but we kinda did it backwards last year and led with the guys who have options and didn't have the veteran base (harder to stash) to fall back on.
  16. To be fair, are there not big question marks regarding Lyles? I had him on my list of pitchers I was interested in but just like Pineda this is 2 mil (maybe 3 mil this time) more than I wanted to shell out for him. I don't blame DS for setting a value and sticking to it. So far it looks like those values are getting pushed around. I don't think Gausman or Lyles has a higher degree of risk. I really want McHugh, but in the pen with Closer potential. The Kendricks news was rough because I would have paid that. Lyles Pineda Wheeler Moose Grandal Hamels, no thanks at those numbers.
  17. This is a shame. The money is about right so you don't want to outbid them significantly. You'd prefer not to go 2 years. If he wanted to stay there then what can you do.
  18. You can not get a package like 1 and turn around and talk about the guys you do in 8. Hader is quite possibly the best bullpen weapon in all of baseball. I agree that the trade would stock up the offense very well and very inexpensively but losing Hader would not be offset at all by Perdomo Andrews and QTC. Those are the guys who are next up on the AAA shuttle. Not best bullpen weapon in baseball material. They'd need to spend on the BP immediately if they dealt Hader. You'd have to hope Burnes Rasmussen Small and Kelly would bullet their way to the MLB to even start talking about offsetting the hit to the BP. If they plan to keep him as a more traditional closer, deal him. Sign McHugh. If they plan to let him roam and end games 2-3 innings early. That's a monster loss.
  19. 17% sure is bad. However, so is 27% and 25%. It's not like Grandal was throwing out 83% of base stealers and Narvaez was throwing out 17%. I really don't care about the difference between 1 in 4 and 1 in 6. It doesn't happen enough to offset the offensive gain. Let's math this ok. 27 of 100 and 7 of 28. 34 CS to 94 SB 128 attempts. Grandal would CS 35 in 128 attempts. Narvaez would CS 22 in 128 attempts. We are talking about a 13 out difference in 4,374 outs. That is 0.3% It'll impact the team 1 time every 12.5 games. 287/358/790 x 2 Narvaez career vs rhp 271/339/738 x 1 Pina career vs lhp = 281/351/772 platoon vs 246/380/848 Grandal last year Is it worse? Sure. Is that 37 million dollars worse over the next 3 years? I'd say no.
  20. At minimum, I want Gausman Lyles and Walker(if he'll except a super pen role). That's also not really about NEED. I want Suter Peralta and Lauer to start in the pen. We've seen Suter and Peralta do great work there. I also don't want to end up in the same position as last year where a guy flames and we can't find a guy to step in and patch the dam. My main reason behind wanting Gausman Lyles (and I'm 50/50 on Miley) and Walker is to build in team depth. People wanted Wheeler. Well if I could take that 24 mil and get Gausman Lyles Walker (2ip pen?) McHugh (2ip pen or closer) Cishek (SU), while committing to none of them beyond 2021, that's what I want to do. It's not about upgrading the team from an elite talent view point. It's about depth. Woodruff Houser Lyles Gausman Lauer/Walker/Suter Knebel Cishek, Hader McHugh Peralta Suter Walker and Black. You catch lightning in a bottle more often with a lot of bottles.
  21. Probably just a pet peeve here but there have been all kinds of just awful starting players on playoff teams. You can have a weak position and still make the playoffs. We had Yuni B start 11 playoff games for us and he was a below replacement level player and much worse than Castro. Sure but I don’t think you go into a season in which you have other free agent options and money available and come out with Starlin Castro if you’re serious about competing for the playoffs. But you’re right there are some weak spots on playoff teams. I think a lot of those come from in-season injuries though Problem is that Rendon is going to get paid top billing and Donaldson coming off a big year into a 3b depleted market. 3b has all the makings of a position that's about to be an overpaid bidding war. C seemed like a position where filling it out right would require some wasteful spending. Narvaez in the fold. 3b is the next position MKE needs to swing a trade to fill. And please that's not a cue to post a Hader to the Mets trade idea. 1b OF (if we choose) P and RP are pretty deep. 3b is pretty rough. I don't think they can do a Rendon contract. I don't want a big multi year deal on a guy as old as Donaldson. I see that worse and a bigger risk than 4 years on Moose. I'd rather roll with Peraza at 3b and kick tires until the trade deadline.
  22. One of Stearns' driving principles of roster construction is having good depth. Trading Nottingham would seem to go against that idea. I'm not in love with the player Nottingham is right now, but I'm not inclined to rule out the possibility that he could grow into a more productive/useful player over time. . . . Heck, Manny Pina had only 17 plate appearances over 5 games in the majors before the Brewers got him and brought him up when he was 29. As other already noted, Nottingham's only 24. Mario Feliciano has an ETA of 2020 per MLB Pipeline - so Nottingham has some time, but the clock is ticking to a degree. Then there is Payton Henry, David Fry, and Nick Kahle behind Feliciano, not to mention Cooper Hummel and Thomas Dillard. I won't give away Nottingham, but if I can use him to fill holes, I won't object. Clancy come on buddy. You follow the MiLB boys way too closely to use the pipeline ETA on the 21 year old pup Feliciano. He only got his feet wet in AA at the tail end of the year. His ETA isn't any sooner than roster expansions in 2021. He was drafted very young. Henry's behind him. They also took their time with Fry despite him being 24. None of these guys are ETA 2020. Cooper didn't even catch this year. Dillard caught 3 innings this year. He's a 1b/OF Nottingham is unchallenged by the farm until Feliciano or Kahle run him down. That's a 21 year old in AA and a 21 year old in A+. That's not happening this year. Team has 4 interesting young catchers though. Also a defensive plus (only is seems) guy in Max McDowell. If you don't count the guy in his prime we added today. Nottingham McDowell in AAA Feliciano and probably Henry in AA Kahle and Fry in A+ (and if Fry doesn't start in A+ you can safely assume they don't see him as a contender in this group)
  23. I really liked the idea of him. Had a really nice year last year. The PED thing is a traditional PED hit. He wasn't masking or on hgh or anything dramatic. He has a ton of potential and while he hasn't lived up to it yet he hasn't put up numbers that hurt his team. There are plenty of options that could get similar production left. Not many with his upside though. Shame, but this wasn't cheaper than I would have went. It looks pretty fair.
  24. I'm in the same mindset as you. We don't need big names and their huge accompanying salaries. We need a lot of decent players to mix and match that won't have a negative effect on future teams. A deep team full of decent options is better than a top heavy team with nobody backing them up IMHO. I just don't like the idea of putting all our hopes on a couple players. I'm not sure I agree with you on the specific players but I think that approach is the best way to go. Well Narvaez is much more fun that a Vogt. 3B is still the issue I see with the options open. A lot of people have talked about a Thames Cron Thames Kendricks duo and that looks very strong platoon wise in theory. The 3b is the piece. Pineda just signed with the Twins. I'm willing to go very middle of the road on these pitchers. Now I'd look for Miley Lyles Gausman and Walker. The only guy I really want to SPEND on is Collin McHugh. I think 6/2 probably gets that done though. I think he's a 2IP RP ace and even has closer potential. He's been filthy out of the pen his entire career.
  25. Do we get those pitching staffs too, asking for a friend. Just when I thought Hill and our CBA going to the Mariners was the best thing I'd see on here today... You waltzed through the door with this. That's hilarious. Love this trade. Picks absolutely have value but players who have shown success and moved up in the minors in timely fashion have more. I'm very happy we kept all the arms in the system that are showing promise while being at an advanced level for their age. If anything Hill got passed by a few more guys last year. We got a lefty catcher in his prime with 3 years of control left for the CBA. Maybe our 75th pick from 2016 will be ready in 2023 when Narvaez goes to FA.
