  1. This is what I’ve alluded to a couple times this offseason as well. Infield defense is becoming less important and I think that might be the newest trend Stearns is spearheading and giving a shot. Maybe a Castellanos signing for 3B isn’t out of the realm of possibility!
  2. Castellanos will come in as the third baseman and the Brewers offense will be STACKED! CF Cain 2B Hiura LF Yelich 3B Castellanos C Narvaez RF Garcia 1B Braun SS Urias P Woodruff Braun in the 7 hole!? Sign me up! With all the strikeouts across the league these days, we will get by! We will overcome! We will win the 2020 World Series!
  3. Hard pass on Donaldson for me. I don’t see him staying highly productive for 3-4 years through the life of the contract. At 34, he is past his prime. Locking ourselves into a large $25+ million contract for 4 years for a player of his age is just not a wise investment. I would rather explore the trade route or head into the 2020 offseason with a bunch of payroll flexibility to look at bringing in some other high end talent next offseason like Justin Turner, George Springer, DJ LeMahieu, Marcus Semien, or possibly Michael Brantley on a short term deal. If we give Donaldson a ton now, we will not have the financial flexibility next offseason and lock ourselves into a long term crippling contract if he doesn’t remain an all-star talent into his late 30’s. There are a bunch of intriguing names next offseason if they don’t sign extensions beforehand. I would prefer having the ability to bring in a couple guys like Brantley and Turner than to be stuck with a contract that I feel will look ugly after only 2 years.
  4. Not a big fan of this signing either. The last two signings of Sogard and Smoak have been underwhelming to me. I would have preferred Thames back for first, but maybe he didn’t want to come back after having his option declined. He did seem to truly love Milwaukee though. Maybe Stearns just didn’t have much interest in bringing him back? I do like the continued trend of cutting strikeouts. Hopefully Smoak can hit closer to .250 with his OBP 100 points higher and we will be fine. The lineup still lacks that big bat protecting Yelich in my opinion. If Yelich hits second, we really do not have a 4 hole hitter as I assume Hiura will be hitting 3rd. If Yelich hits third, Hiura could hit 4th and have Cain and Urias in front of Yelich, but I prefer Hiura in the 2 hole with Yelich hitting third. It’s an interesting idea, but I hope they consider bringing in Castellanos like somebody else suggested and have him play 3rd for this season. Shift him to first next season, or possibly have him splitting time in the outfield and first. That bat in the 4 hole protecting Yelich would be a big addition. Late game situations, Sogard, Arcia (?), and Smoak are all options to come in to solidfy the defense late and pull Braun while shifting Castellanos to the outfield, 1st base, or pulling him out of the game altogether. I know they won’t actually look to bring in Castellanos with Garcia brought in and now Smoak, but I think that will be an opportunity missed. Castellanos is primed for his breakout this season and I wish it was in a Brewers uniform.
  5. Arcia has to be on the move. I don’t see any way Urias begins in AAA. He has nothing left to prove there. He needs his time at the big league level and will need at bats. Hiura isn’t taking a back seat to anybody. Either Sogard is looked at for third base or Arcia is moved. It pretty much has to be one or the other. Arcia on the move is the much more likely outcome in my opinion. Moving him would make the Sogard acquisition only +$2.3 million in payroll, which is insignificant.
  6. An unreported detail of the signing came out today that the Yankees can void Cole’s opt-out if they wish after the 5th season even if Cole wants to opt out. If they exercise that decision, the Yankees tack on one additional year for $36 million. This brings the possible total contract to 10 years and $360 million. If Cole does opt out, the Yankees can also just let him go though. Kind of an interesting tidbit on the deal.
  7. I think a package including Arcia for Seager is probably in the works with the hangup the additional components (Corey Ray?) and cash coming back to MKE. Seager's 3rd year option vests upon a trade so he's a tad expensive. I think he might be the best defensive 3B still out there so that's a definite advantage. Three years (year 32-34 seasons) isn't too long of a stretch for performance decline. We could give them back Freddy. The chances he develops another pitch are about the same as Arcia breaking out... I do think Arcia is going to be on the move for some expensive third baseman coming back from a team in need of SS depth or possibly the third piece of a larger trade to bring in a first or third baseman.
  8. A big perk of Sogard’s is his ability to put the ball in play and not strike out. He has struck out in under 15% of his at bats for his career. With the offense we are constructing now, bringing in a guy like Urias who doesn’t strike out a bunch, Garcia who will help cut down the K’s, and now a guy like Sogard, I think it’s a trend we will continue to see. Less power, less strikeouts, and putting the ball in play more will hopefully lead to more manufactured runs and a more consistent offense. Sogard is a nice pinch hitting bat and double switch option for the Brewers to get an at bat with runners on in the latter part of a game who won’t (normally) strikeout.
  9. I think $4.5 is an overpay for Sogard, but if he hits like he did last season, he will be fine. I fully expect an Arcia trade as he, Sogard, and Urias are all predominantly 2B/SS guys with Hiura having the full time 2B gig covered. Those three are redundant and something will have to give. Arcia is as good as gone with Hiura getting the 2B spot, Urias getting SS, and Sogard filling in for injuries, underperformance, and guys needing off days. It also adds a lefty bat to the mix when we are facing righties. Not a fan of Sogard and not a fan of this signing at all. But I am interested in seeing if he can carry over his performance from last season to this season. If he does, then I will be pleasantly surprised. But I am expecting an Arcia trade. I just wonder if it’s going to be for a prospect or two or possibly part of a package for a third baseman since it’s something we still desperately need. Maybe even part of a larger trade of a team wanting a competent bench piece with some upside.
  10. I initially strongly disliked this signing when I first initially heard about it while working and hearing it’s an MLB deal, but knowing that he has 3 options remaining, I’m fine with it. If he’s seeing any significant amount of time for us, it’s because our first couple MLB options are injured and missing significant time. Not a bad depth option to have.
  11. We absolutely loved O and Ka. Saw Love, but it's a bit awkward as we're in our 30s and didn't get everything. The Michael Jackson show....well, we won't see that on principle. If you're okay with spending for a great steak, I say go to Stripsteak at Mandalay Bay. Get the ribcap..I've never seen someone walk disappointed by it, and I've brought about 40 friends and family there. We have a usual waiter--Thomas. He will lead you to a wonderful experience if you trust him. Is it sad that I thought of the Robert Kraft situation for this statement?
  12. I really like how the offense is starting to look. I do think we still lack that big bat to protect Yelich, but we should be a much more consistent offense this season. And it’ll be with less homers (something we aren’t used to). I think a reunion with Thames is in the best interest of the Brewers to get that third lefty bat in the lineup when facing righties. I would bring back Thames and sign one of Asdrubal Cabrera (who is a switch hitter) or Wilmer Flores. Against Righties 1B Thames (L) CF Cain ® LF Yelich (L) 2B Hiura ® C Narvaez (L) RF Garcia ® 3B Flores ® SS Urias ® P Against Lefties SS Urias ® CF Cain ® LF Yelich (L) 2B Hiura ® C Narvaez (L) RF Garcia ® 1B Braun ® 3B Flores ® P Regardless of who we are facing, we would have a pretty impressive looking lineup. I think Urias is going to open some eyes this year with a .350+ OBP and become our SS and eventual leadoff hitter of the future. When you’re talking about having guys like Braun, Flores, or Urias down in the 7 or 8 hole, you have an impressive lineup. We wouldn’t have any black holes. I really like the structure of our team as it currently sits, but bringing back Thames and signing one of Flores or Cabrera would really give our roster a nice construction.
  13. Once again, here is the updated roster with their payroll commitments. Let me know if anything is incorrect. Thanks! Position Players Braun $14 million ($3 million deferred) Cain $15 million ($1 million deferred) Yelich $12.5 million Garcia $7.5 million Hiura $500K Arcia $2.2 million Urias $500K Pina $1.8 million Gamel $1.4 million Narvaez (Arb. $2.9 million) Total $58.3 million Rotation Woodruff $500K B. Anderson $5 million Houser $500K Lauer $500K Lindblom $3 million Total $9.5 million Bullpen Hader $5 million Knebel (Arb. $5.2 million) Claudio $1.8 million Suter $1 million Peralta $500K Feyereisen $500K Wahl $500K D. Williams $500K Total $15 million Other Options (not included on payroll list) D. Guerra $500K Faria $500K Burnes $500K Buyouts/Deferred Payments Thames $1 million Moustakas $3 million Grandal $2.25 million Garza $2 million Total $8.25 million $58.3 + $9.5 + $15 + $8.25 = $91.05 Million Current Payroll About $36.5 million below last year’s payroll
  14. It has crossed by mind, but no I don’t see them actually doing that. Cain is a solid bounce back candidate and a gold glove center fielder. For the price we pay him, it’s probably best to hold onto him and enjoy the best defensive center fielder in the game and hope that he hits .270-.280 the rest of the way.
  15. I’m starting to think this as well. Maybe he just doesn’t want to play for Milwaukee and is using us as leverage. I remember when we were linked to Cain though and it took about 5 days for us to sign him. This could be a similar situation. This might be one of those rare times where something the Brewers are doing actually does get leaked.
  16. I am sure that Stearns did his due diligence and had his staff check out Kluber’s medicals and felt that he is damaged goods. Just because it’s a cheap return doesn’t mean that Stearns couldn’t of matched it. It’s because in his mind, it has a higher chance of backfiring on the Brewers than actually working out. $17.5 million is a huge gamble for a guy who might make little to no impact on your season. Who’s to say that Kluber wouldn’t be Jimmy Nelson 2.0? Except Kluber would cost almost 5 times as much. Locking that much money into a guy who could do nothing for you isn’t a wise investment during a competitive window. Yes we might need to take risks to win it all, but taking a pitcher that broke his arm is a massive risk. Signing a guy like Rendon (who we were linked to) who has multiple years left in his prime would be a wiser investment and have a much higher chance of working out, especially on the front end of the deal. Stearns was in on him, but it just didn’t work out. I am fine with them passing on Kluber. If the medical staff says it’s too risky, then it’s too risky. I would trust their judgment on not doing the trade.
  17. Getting really tired of seeing every thread develop into the Brewers owner being cheap, the payroll is for sure being slashed, bargain bin hunting galore, and just dragging this entire place down. Hopefully the mods can get a hold of this stuff soon because this is getting really annoying. People know the rules here. People know exactly what they are doing when they are making these posts to cause issues here. They shouldn’t even need warnings when they know the rules and derail threads intentionally. This type of stuff should fit into trolling/spamming on here. Get these guys on timeouts. This needs to be cleaned up fast because it is really ruining this place quickly.
  18. Could be Stearns to trying to get him to sign some weird deal, like two years with multiple team options or something like that. That’s kind of what I’m thinking too. 2 year deal and the Brewers want 2 option years after that and Garcia only wants to do 1 option year or something. And then Garcia wants a higher AAV up front to take the second option year or something like that and it’s just back and forth. That’s what I’ve been pondering for the last day or so.
  19. Probably a mix of the Indians wanting to shed payroll and them being very high on Clase. Similar to our deal with the Padres how they were pretty high on Grisham and seemed to overpay to get him.
  20. I wonder how many days they are going to drag out this Garcia thing. They have been in serious and advanced talks for a couple days now. What’s the holdup? Kind of an interesting situation. Wonder if something else is going on.
  21. Supposedly Clase throws a 101 mph splitter but still.. Sounds like more is involved? It’ll be interesting to see what else they get.
  22. Nope...Brewers couldn't have met or exceeded this?? They very easily could have. I assume that he had too many red flags for the Brewers to consider at this point, because the Indians practically gave him away if that is all the return is. Red flags for sure. They still got a very promising reliever that they will control for 6 seasons. If Clase has a full season of how he performed last season, he’s going to be extremely valuable. But it’s still a little underwhelming.
  23. I 100% agree, I still think DS got caught off guard thinking he was going to bring Moose back at the very least. Still no clue what they are going to do about 1B and 3rd base...not much left out there that's going to really move the needle. Still would love Castellano's bat in the lineup, no matter where you can get him to play. Castellanos is definitely a logical target for the Brewers. They need that right handed power bat in the lineup that they still lack and a real threat to protect Yelich. Castellanos would provide that. Get him to play right field and move Braun to first mostly full time. If injuries arise, Braun can be moved back to the outfield and someone else can slot in at 1st. Castellanos just makes so much sense for the Brewers. It would be nice to add a veteran bat like that to the lineup as well since we have quite a few new faces and young guys possibly starting for us that a bat like that to add some stability to the lineup would be very beneficial (Narvaez, Urias, Hiura, one of first or third).
  24. Not at all. He’s a career Brewers player. He’s also on the last year of a contract and is still a productive bat. His no trade clause would also become an issue. I would personally think it’s a bad look if they look at moving him now. If he produces like he did last season, he is well worth it. Especially if he is our 6 hole hitter on most days like it seems like he could be.
  25. Interested in seeing what they got for a return. I’m sure it’ll still be quite the haul.
