  1. Not that the order means a heck of a lot, but Freddy as the #2 starter as a 22-year-old is pretty dang cool. He's dominated this spring, though, so it's deserved. I'm really excited about this rotation, especially if/when Nelson joins it.
  2. If they had the choice of signing a upper end reliever or upper end starter to a similar contract, I'd take the starter 10 times out of 10. Like Joseph said, a Keuchel signing theoretically pushes a high-end arm like Woodruff or Burnes to a leverage pen spot, basically giving you two for the price of one. If the Brewers are truly breaking it down to pitchers who provide quality innings, a good Keuchel is going to give you at least double the innings. Even if he gives you an ERA in the low 3s, while Kimbrel gives you an ERA in the low- to mid-2s, Keuchel is still providing more value. I don't think there's any chance they sign both. If it's a bidding war with the Braves for Kimbrel, the Braves can have him. I'll take the starter.
  3. No, I wasn't gloating. It wasn't optimism, it was flat out statements that he will be the starter opening day, etc. At least I wasnt gloating about how the Brewers caused injuries to JJ and Knebel. That's fair. This type of thing happens every year at this time. Thursday can't get here soon enough.
  4. Are we really at the point of gloating about an optimistic fan's predictions not turning out right? Come on guys.
  5. Well now if the reports are true let’s see if Mark A puts his foot down Perhaps he'll put his foot down and say "Forget it." I'd like Kimbrel, but not if there's going to be this bidding war crap. Both these teams have had months to throw a contract at him, and he's had months to accept one. If he's going to play the two against each other, I say "Good luck in Atlanta, Craig."
  6. Now apparently the Braves are in, according to David O'Brien, a Braves beat guy. Down to the Brewers and Braves for Kimbrel's services. Braves have familiarity, but notoriously cheap ownership. Brewers have an ownership group that wants to go for it. Will be interesting to see what happens. I hope the Braves don't get him, as their fans have been obnoxiously begging for him for months.
  7. He’s one of the two high leverage arms the Brewers currently have in their bullpen, The other of course being hader. In my opinion the only other potential high leverage arm we currently have would be fields. Again in my opinion I think we’re going to have to go outside our 40 man roster through trade or signing. Only other potential high leverage arms the way I see it would be Nelson and Burnes but I think the Brewers want to keep them at starters. Also will have to keep an eye on Anderson he could also be a wildcard in this bullpen. Literally anyone could be a wildcard or a failure out there. Yeah guys like Knebel are technically more of a sure thing, but even he was bad enough last year to get a demotion to AAA. I have a feeling we may just see a guy emerge from seemingly out of nowhere.
  8. If no Kimbrel. Replace Barnes with fields please. And Albers with houser. Package the two in a trade for lottery ticket I think it can be dangerous to have recency bias when it comes to player performance. Albers was terrific in 2017 with the Nationals, and over the first two months of 2018 with the Brewers, to the point where he basically took over a bullpen stopper role after Knebel's injury. I personally think its imperative to see if that Albers is back in 2019 before dumping him. Barnes has also proved serviceable. I love Houser, and I think he's going to make an impact this year, but I don't think its a good idea to destroy our pen depth on top of losing the guys on top.
  9. I have a sneaky feeling that the "savior" in our pen is already hear. Get ready for Junior Guerra, bullpen ACE! Not kidding. He looked like a stud in the pen at the end of last year. If he can stay healthy, his stuff plays really well there. He's got the demeanor for it too.
  10. I wish fans were screened before they were allowed to call in. Same with being allowed to post about the team on Twitter and Facebook. Like maybe giving a "Frequently asked Questions" form or "These Questions Are Stupid, Don't Ask Them" form.
  11. Yes agree, stearns had 2 days to get Kimbrel signed before Knebel “dead arm” lie got out. Price either stayed firm or went up since then. If we want him we are going to have to give him 3+ yrs like I’ve been saying all along or maybe but I doubt it 1 at like 22. Everyone already knows what I’d do. Stearns drivin by analytics so prob won’t budge. Which I know will make a lot of you very happy around here. My take here is stearns can prob make pen work without Kimbrel as most of you say, but IMHO Kimbrel’s value is strong enough to warrant 3-4 yr deal. IF goes south stearns can rid of him w/o much if any damage. We have the $, what’s the downside? I don't think anyone is saying they don't want Kimbrel. They just don't want to sign him to a crippling contract.
  12. If he does, great. If not, it wasn't meant to be, and you move on. All it would take is a team like the Cubs or Braves stepping up to knock the Brewers out. Both could comfortably offer more years and hence, more guaranteed cash. The longer it drags on, the less chance I see it actually happening.
  13. If it happens great. If not, they'll make it work. They can't get desperate.
  14. He's a Spanish language multimedia Red Sox reporter. I don't know why he'd be making things up.
  15. No, he's suggested in the recent past that Moustakas play SS. Because he played it in HS. Seriously. No, he played in full-season A and at rookie level. It was about 65 games, and he wasn't a total hack in the field. If Arcia puts up a .250 avg/.320 OBP/.380 SLG, then no need to worry - the Crew can make adjustments as necessary. My worry is if Arcia is below the Uecker line again... .200/.250/.325 won't cut it, no matter how good he fields. Then Perez sees more time at SS. Then they would call up Saladino or Dubon. Those guys would all play SS before Moustakas. Probably Jake Hager too. Just because a guy played the position as a 18-19 year old, it doesn't mean he could play there as a 30 year old. Braun played SS as an 18-19 year old at Miami. That doesn't mean he should be anywhere near an MLB infield.
  16. Adam McCalvy ‏ Verified account @AdamMcCalvy More Nelson recorded 10 outs on 57 pitches by the great @Todd_Rosiak’s count. Yielded a homer, a double just inside the line and two walks. Sharp breaking stuff. Sat 91-93 mph with the FB for the first three innings and mostly 89 in a long 4th cut short when he reached his pitch count
  17. Todd Rosiak ‏ Verified account @Todd_Rosiak 4h4 hours ago More Jimmy Nelson threw four innings and 57 pitches in an advanced Class A game against the Dodgers this afternoon in Maryvale. Allowed two hits (one a HR by Dillon Paulson), one run and two walks with three strikeouts.
  18. I just posted a Jeffress update. It's possible that his pen session wasn't public. There is info on Nelson's minors start today all over Twitter from McCalvy. Of course there is nothing on the Kimbrel negotiations. Why in the world would they make anything from that public before it does or doesn't happen?
  19. Requisite Jeffress update:
  20. Oh I agree. I'd gladly take those numbers with his defense at SS. Not everyone feels that way though.
  21. So just to be clear, if Arcia is the black hole, and Hiura gets called up, who plays shortstop? Are you suggesting, and it won't really be all that shocking, that Hiura will be our SS in that scenario? If / when Hiura gets called up, it is to play 2B. Who plays SS? No, he's suggested in the recent past that Moustakas play SS. Because he played it in HS. Seriously.
  22. Anderson is another team first guy. I think he’s going to take to the bullpen like the proverbial fish to water. Uptick in velocity out of the pen certainly won’t hurt, he’s got good stuff he should do really well. Just as I never believe initial injury reports, I also never believe any "team first" stuff. Some players are very good at PR, some are not. Anderson could be (probably is) a team first guy, but for all we know he hates the idea of going to the pen. Well ... that's on him. It's better than not having a job. Pitch better.
  23. I was just thinking that same thing. May see more traditional defined roles this year. Having extra starters like Anderson and Nelson ready to rock can help keep innings down for the young guys.
  24. Here I thought that the Brewers were being next-level proactive and value-driven, but apparently I was giving them too much credit. Signing Kimbrel now is the textbook definition of reactionary desperation. Who cares what the reason for signing him is? You act like he isn’t arguably the best and most consistent reliever of all time. You could argue dumping those kind of resources on a huge strength doesn’t make much sense value wise, but now that the outlook on the bullpen is a bit shaky there’s a value to be had. Of course in the end you are correct. And don't misconstrue my comment as meaning I don't want Kimbrel. I did when I thought he was a luxury signing, and I do now. I guess I just wish that they would have pursued him when they thought they had all hands on deck, making a strength a greater strength. Kinda like what they did in the OF last year. Going after him now is just more of a no-brainer than it is being proactive. I still want it to happen, it just isn't as cool I guess.
