  1. Questioning whether an electric pitcher may be able to take on a more valuable role is not the same. Yes, I realize that relievers have more value than they used to, but starting pitching is still infinitely more valuable.
  2. Nice to see Hader sitting consistently at 94-96. Not the 97-98 he was hitting last year, but still positive.
  3. No! Didn't you know that Stearns was hosed on that deal? I mean, Davis has hit a lot of dingers the last couple years! It must be because Stearns is young and inexperienced. Here's to hoping Derby finds his way to the big leagues at some point as well. 5 innings, 1 H, 1 ER, 4Ks tonight. He's certainly on the map as potential help this year.

  5. Still trying to understand why Jeremy Jeffress only pitches well as a Brewer. He's been pretty dang close to dominant so far this year.
  6. If Santana isn't hitting for power, he is basically useless. He isn't a good baserunner, and is a negative-value defender. He strikes out a ton. I guess he does take walks, which I suppose is saying something with this lineup.
  7. Yeah, your 33-year-old 6th-7th starter should not be on a pitch count. The way he's pitching, he will reclaim his ace status in no time. So far, so good for Guerra, and his arrival was much needed. I hope he can recapture what he had in 2016, as that would go a long way toward making the staff respectable, and keep the team in contention.
  8. Wow, have there actually been people arguing for that? Thames is streaky no doubt, but when he's "on", he's one of the top power threats in MLB.
  9. He's a very good framer. Supposedly. If there are still concerns about his defense, I definitely don't see them from first impressions. He looks every bit the "catcher of the future" that he was billed as when he was traded for. Bubba Derby has had a solid start at AAA (including a gem so far tonight, albeit in a losing effort), making the Davis for Nottingham/Derby deal look like perhaps it wasn't quite the fleecing some had led us to believe. Plus, Khris Davis makes Santana look like a Gold Glover in the corner OF.

  11. I think at this point, the Marlins are pretty set on the shedding contracts unless somebody wants to take on Chen. Other than Stanton, I don't think they were ever really motivated to give guys away and to take cost/money as the only motivation in the trade. Their longterm outlook is pretty good now in terms of player contracts. Taking a few million bucks off their hand wouldn't be of zero value, but I don't think it's a motivation really as shady as they seem at this point. They do eventually want to win again in a few years. True, but I still think they are trying to put as much to bottom line as possible. Agreeing to take back one or even both the guys I mentioned maybe means you don't need to give up Burnes and could get away with using only Woodruff or even Suter (if they like him) as the main pitcher in a package. Something like Woodruff, Villar, one or two of Erceg, Lutz, Dubon, Ray, a lower level lotto ticket and like Broxton for some major league filler could conceivable do it with taking back salary. Throw in Bandy or something too if they want a catcher replacement. Realmuto has huge trade value. Other teams also know what the Brewers have in the minors. They wouldn't sniff him unless Burnes or Peralta were going back. A team like the Marlins is going to have absolutely no use for guys like Suter, Villar and Broxton.
  12. Excited to see Nottingham get his first start. Seeing Thames hitting 2nd always looks odd, though. Hopefully Yelich is back in the lineup tomorrow. It kind of bothers me that Braun hasn't seen any action at 1B since the opening series. I know there have been injuries, but I was hoping that he'd be there more often to get more comfortable.
  13. 23 starts is more than a cup 'o coffee. And I'd say he's a solid fit with most of the rest of the names on that list.
  14. "Something, something valuable depth mumble mumble." - Craig Counsell
  15. It's moves like this that convince me that this team just doesn't want me to be happy. Gosh, I imagine that Drake is one more blowup away from being next, though.
  16. Apparently there is just something about these former Orioles pitchers. Miley, Drake, Gallardo, Davies, also Albers and Liz (granted both a long time ago). Not exactly the bastion of pitching talent, though.
  17. I think it's time to pull the trigger on making Counsell a player-coach. Somewhere, Nate Orf just shed a single tear.
  18. The problem is neither Bandy nor Vogt have options remaining, and I doubt they are going to carry three catchers on the 25-man roster.
  19. You and the entire Brewers' marketing department, who is itching to kick in the inevitable "Sheriff of Nottingham" campaign... Ugh! That's a beach ball on a tee for their cutesy marketing department people.
  20. Definitely helping out his "trade chip" status. He's been one of the most pleasant surprises of the early minor league slate of action. The corner OF market may be horrible, but there is always going to be high value in solid defensive centerfielders who have pop and can get on base. Being that Ray is already going to be 24 this year, and Cain has a 5-year deal, it's hard to see him as the CF of the future. So he's currency.
  21. Agree to disagree then. But I hope you are right. So far, Santana is supposedly a power bat who isn't providing any power. Since he provides negative value as a defender, isn't much of a threat on the bases, and still strikes out a ton, his power needs to be what keeps him in the lineup.
  22. Realmuto is a solid 3 WAR player. 3 x 9.16 (value per WAR) = 27.48 x 3 seasons of control = 82.44 million of value and I'd guess his arbitration earnings run somewhere around 16 million. 82-16 = 66 million and then multiply it by 0.972 since these last two weeks represented 2.78% of his remaining years of control. 64 million is a reasonable ask for the Marlins, I could see them being happy with 80% of that number but get below that and there is really no reason to move him. He isn't making a whole lot this season so it's not like he needs to be a part of a salary dump. I'd put the prospect surplus value of the named Brewer prospects as follows: -Woodruff = 17.86 million -Gatewood = 5.72 million -Supak = 5.72 million -Nottingham = 2.29 million Total = 31.59 million IMO that package is way short for a player like Realmuto. But at least you started with Woodruff which is a good enough name where it would catch the Marlin's attention. I'd listen to a revised package if you have one. Well, I figured Burnes, Erceg, Supak and Nottingham would get the deal done. That's one Top 50 guy, and two more in Erceg and Nottingham that are likely on the cusp, plus another solid SP prospect in Supak. Personally, I wouldn't do it, as it severely limits the ability to make a deal for starting pitching later on. Also, I believe that Nottingham is the real deal, and while he may never be as valuable as Realmuto, he has the tools to come close.
  23. Blood pressure rose just reading that. If moving Suter to the pen as the long man meant finally getting rid of the Drake, that is a move I could get behind.
  24. What's keeping them from removing Chacin from the rotation? He's been demonstrably worse than Suter, and his slider profiles well in a bullpen role. Personally, I like Suter in the rotation better than Chacin. At least Suter has look competent at times this year. All Chacin has done is throw a ton of pitches and benefit from some quick hooks before getting shelled. Not saying I disagree with you but its doubtful that they pull the plug on Chacin as a starter this soon into the season after paying them a decent chunk to be in our rotation. It is just not how things usually work at that level. That is why Suter, even though he hasn't been terrible, is probably the odd man out and could help extend our bullpen. $8 million isn't very out of line for a decent reliever. If Chacin continues to put up 3-4 inning starts, I don't think it's too out of line to think he may be replaced. You are probably right, though, that the leash is probably longer with him than with someone like Suter or Guerra. The fact that Suter could theoretically come out of the pen and provide 2-3 innings on a semi regular basis would be valuable as well. It just is a little depressing that the rotation has performed pretty much exactly as advertised, i.e. extremely hittable for the most part, with short starts. Thank goodness Chase Anderson has been good this year. He's the only one who provides any semblance of length. The mediocrity of the rotation has me thinking we may see some of the young prospects taking turns at some point soon.
